Okay, so first of all: I use a special brush To Render and colour, Here's it's brush code!

This Brush isn't created by me though, it's By another artist sadly, I forgot their name. But The credit goes to them!

I use this Brush to Colour, AND render, This Brush rlly Changed my Life XD

You can just colour Your whole drawing with this Brush, Lineart included. The Lineart Basically blends with the Colour Of The Skin/object/clothing/anything! If you feel like the Lineart Practically disappeared from using this Brush, just Draw that specific Part with the Pen (Fade) brush!

Second of all: hair shading! For this, I ALSO use a brush to achieve that glassy/crystal-like texture on The characters' hairs!

First, draw whatever the hell this is.

I guess it's a Base for Colouring over the hair? I dunno.

Then just Use the brush on top of it, in the same layer, just Draw On top of it with FORCE FADE it should Look like this:

After you achieve this look, time to make it a bit shiny.

Select "Add" in blending mode, use a lighter colour from the hair, And use the airbrush, shade it over where you feel like it, but not too much, it should Look similar to this:

And Just add a little Squiggly lines on top of em, in the same Layer, like this:

I also like to add a little bit of dark fade over my characters' faces.

Don't do it too much, Just From their Forehead to their Nose. and lightly. Again, not too much.

And if you want to, give the eyelids a little bit of some shine!

Its v ez, just use the Pen (fade) brush once again!

I use the ibispaint Filters! duplicate Your artwork, And Use The "Brightness and contrast" filter on the duplicated Layer, the Brightness Should be 80%, And the contrast should be 40%, use the Luminosity In blending mode, if you want to, Make it a bit blurry. And Lower the layer's opacity to 40%, Now that's all!

introduction: understanding the frame before the picture

in recent decades, it’s become fashionable to speak of the tapestry in vague terms—some use it as a metaphor for fate, others for nature, or society, or love, or whatever else they’re currently fixated on. the actual structure of existence is more precise than that, and less poetic.

this book, and the ones that will follow it, exist to untangle that mess.

the world (and by world, i mean all of existence) is made up of a dual-loom structure: the loom above, which governs the abstract and celestial, and the loom below, which houses the tangible and the lived. 

side note: some esoteric traditions claim a third, hidden “inner loom” or “mirror weave,” but this text will not address that. 

i. the loom above

“that which we cannot climb to, but which climbs into us.”

the loom above is the metaphysical source of structure, pattern, and influence. it is not a place, not in the spatial sense. it is a system of intentions—nonlinear, layered, semi-conscious—that collectively forms what we call the celestial tapestry.

this is where the threads, those foundational forces that shape all things (covered in the next section), are born and maintained. but these forces do not govern themselves.

they are tended.

each of the four major threads—heart, mind, fate, and essence—is overseen by a singular, chosen being known as a star. these stars are not abstract ideals or myths. they are fae, real ones, born as any other fae is, but marked from the moment of emergence. the loom above selects them with signs, dreams, and omens, and once chosen, they become something other. not immortal, exactly, but close enough that the difference only matters in theory.

there are only ever four stars at once. when a star fades or dies (and they can), the loom chooses another. that’s rare. most millenia never see a succession.

the stars are not distant. they are not unfeeling. but they are burdened. each carries the weight of their thread- its balance, integrity, and will.

things that originate from the loom above tend to exhibit certain qualities:

universality – they recur across cultures, species, and epochs.

resonance – they evoke deep metaphysical reactions, often unexplainable but widely felt.

continuity – they are not easily broken or lost, only tangled or suppressed.

ii. the loom below

“here is where the needle stings.”

the loom below is the plane we inhabit. it is composed of matter, sensation, time, and consequence. while it is often thought of as a “mirror” of the loom above, that metaphor is flawed. mirrors reflect; the loom below interprets. it is translation, not duplication.

here, threads become tangible. they embed into people, places, storms, illnesses, decisions. they fray and twist. they interact with context, culture, and choice.

key features of the loom below:

mortality – all things decay, even those influenced by celestial threads.

interference – forces from the loom above manifest imperfectly, often colored by the vessel receiving them.

imbalance – because this realm lacks the precision of the upper loom, threads often conflict or knot. this is both a hazard and a necessity for growth.

some beings, particularly the fae, are more sensitive to the flow between looms (see volume iii: on the fae). this is not always a gift. sometimes, it’s the metaphysical equivalent of standing too close to a lightning rod.

iii. between the weaves

“where intention becomes form.”

while the two looms are conceptually distinct, they are not sealed off from one another. there is interplay—points where the above impresses upon the below and vice versa. these moments are often brief, difficult to predict, and dangerous to misunderstand.

events such as:

sudden inspirations with no logical cause

“thin places” in the world, where perception shifts

spontaneous descension events (see: on the fae)

inexplicable omens, shared dreams, mirrored symbols

...are all evidence of contact between the looms.

to navigate these thresholds responsibly, a working understanding of both layers is essential. that, of course, is the purpose of this entire collection.

 this volume is meant as a reference, not a holy text. if you take it as gospel, you’ve already misunderstood the spirit in which it was written. think with it. question it. that’s how one honours the loom.

Deleted dialog from Far Cry 3’s main story

In this series of posts, I’m sharing all the unreleased content (minus a few duplicates) I found in the oasisstrings text file, even when it wasn’t very interesting, so we have a comprehensive list of the lines that were cut in each Far Cry 3 story mission.

On a side note, the document never says which character is speaking, so every time you see names, it’s either because the corresponding audio files were available and I know who the speaker is, or because the context made it easy to guess their identity.

Part 19: Warrior Rescue Service & New Rite of Passage

Warrior Rescue Service

Jason escapes the cenote and wants to save Rakyat warriors who apparently are in a helicopter. In this mission, pirates had more dialog. I don’t remember hearing any of the lines below in the game, but I’m not sure:

Vaas is helicoptering the captured savages to Hoyt.

Too bad most of them got shot.

He's running for the chopper!

The Comm-Everstone is an Everstone, small enough to act as the 'gem' of a choker, and enchanted by Laplace to duplicate the effects of a sci-fi Translator. The stone translates Lily's buizel-chitter Poke-Speech and emits an ethereal voice that repeats her words in Human Speech. Whichever voice the listener best understands is brought to the forefront of their perception, preventing any 'cross-talk' from obscuring her words. Notably, it is still quite obvious to the listener that these words are being translated, and not simply Imparting Understanding. (Though, it being magic may be a little unsettling, still.)

Apparently I have this idea for a Kim Possible Bleach crossover.

I was looking through some of my old files as I’m looking to move everything out of google docs, and found this--  When the Go comet hit the siblings were killed and their souls trapped in the meteorite. Because the meteor was now in the “soul realm", due to the trapped souls, Ōetsu Nimaiya came down and collected the fragments and turned them into 4 zanpakuto. However because they aren’t blank like asauchi they are finicky and can’t find true masters.Kim’s school on a field trip to a museum that is displaying four swords when they are attacked by hollows. However only Kim, Ron, Jim, Tim, Bonnie and Will du can see them. Master sensei says the have to use these four swords to fight the hollows, while he gives Ron the lotus blade.

Meanwhile, when the Jade Emperor learns that Sun Wukong has quit he orders for his arrest and sends some gods to go arrest him, including the Mighty Spirit God, and the Third Lotus Prince Nezha. So First they send out the Mighty Spirit God to go pick a fight with him and order him to surrender, saying that if he doesn't he'll also execute the whole mountain. This of course angers Sun Wukong, but he tells him he'll spare him so that he can tell the Jade Emperor that if he promotes him as The Great Sage Equal to Heaven that he'll come along willing. The Might Spirit God of course refuses and Sun Wukong manages to break his ax and defeat him. So that's 1-0 for Sun Wukong vs Heaven. Next they send in Prince Nezha (finally someone Wukong's own size) Especially when he changes into a three headed six armed war form. Which Sun Wukong of course matches with his own transformation. Sun Wukong wins by showing off a new ability by way of duplicating his staff, and by duplicating himself to get the drop on Nezha. So that's 2-0, in Wukong's favor. So while Heaven's forces retreat to tell the Jade Emperor about what happened Sun Wukong meets up with his Demon King brothers and suggests they all come up with great sage names- which they do. Meanwhile the Jade Emperor upon hearing what happened prepares to send the generals to execute Sun Wukong, but the Gold Star of Venus intervenes on his behalf and suggests that instead they just give Sun Wukong the empty title that he wants. The Jade emperor agrees to the plan and sends the Gold Star of Venus to give Sun Wukong the good news. Luckily, Sun Wukong still has trust in Gold Venus from last time, and hears him out. Sun Wukong gladly accepts the new offer and is officially made the 'Great Sage, Equal to Heaven' He didn't really commit any new crimes of note just some more counts of resisting arrest and assault. The main thing he accomplished this chapter was gaining his most famous title: The Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and defeating some gods. Current Sun Wukong Stats: Names/Titles: Monkey, The Stone Monkey, The Handsome Monkey King, Sun Wukong (Monkey awakened to the void), monkey awakened by the emptiness, and The Great Sage Equal To Heaven. Journey to the West Chapter 4 (reformatted)

Remember kids- if your boss won't give you that new rank you want- you can just leave! So Sun Wukong finally makes his way to the heavenly realm by invitation, but right away there is a problem as guards block his way. So immediately Sun Wukong is on the defensive thinking The Gold Star of Venus deceived him. Luckily the Gold Star of Venus convinces him others, and Sun Wukong his able to receive his new heavenly rank of "BanHorsePlague" (But not before being reprimanded for his lack of court etiquette). And he actually does really well in his new job... for two weeks. But during the next company party, he thinks to ask where his job actually ranks and figures out he's actually the lowest of the low. And that even if he does his job perfectly he will only earn a 'Fairly Good' While if he slips up even a little he would be firmly rebuked. So Sun Wukong is of course very offended by this, and quits right then and there. Not even giving a two weeks notice as he bashes his way out of Heaven and back to Flower Fruit Mountain. So Sun Wukong makes it back to Flower Fruit Mountain and there we learn that one day in the Heavenly realm is one year on earth, so he has actually been gone for more then a decade. So while he's telling his monkey's about the insult of being made a stable boy, two new demon kings stop by giving him a new red and yellow robe and wanting to serve him. He happily appoints them as Vanguard Commanders. And when he tells them about his appointment in heaven they suggest to him the rank "Great Sage, Equal to Heaven." Sun Wukong is of course thrilled by this suggestion and orders a banner to be made at once, and tells everyone to address him accordingly.

MDZS Audio Drama Listening Guide

NOTE: This is my own, personal opinion on what’s the preferable order to watch the MDZS Audio Drama extras.

The AD is by far the most accurate adaptation we have, and not only it follows the novel 1:1, it adds quite a lot of content that had only been left implied or left off-screen in the original text. However, there are also some events that do happen in the novel, but had to be put aside in an extra episode, either because of time restraints or for the sake of pacing. So, I’ve tried to set up this list to compensate it! The order is either based on at which point we learn such events in the novel, or if this event isn’t in the text, then it’s based on what I believe the best time to listen to the extra would be.

Jin Guangyao's Violation of 忠孝仁义

So I had written about WWX and his strong sense of 忠孝仁义 last week. While I was writing it, I kept on thinking about JGY and how he managed to violate all of these virtues. I wanted to go into this characterization of him because I find it so interesting how opposite he is to WWX in the decisions he made. (Warning: i’m not nice to JGY here so if you don’t want him dragged, don’t read?)

忠- loyalty, devotion, fidelity (usually for country or monarch)

(Can I take a moment to talk about how much I LOVE THIS SHOT?! The blood of WRH on the camera lens, WRH falling over, the sudden shift to brightness that mirrors the scene in ep 50 where JGY obscures the sun in his bow (picture above the read more cut)! I can’t get over how much I LOVE the lighting and the way WRH collapses, making way for JGY to become the new sun. Foreshadowing much CQL Crew?!)

This one might be a stretch depending on how you read JGY. I fully believe he went to work for Wen Ruohan as Wen Zhuliu did -- seeking someone who will value his skills. However, WZL died for WRH and JGY just bided his time. (Note: While we know very little about Wen Zhuliu, we know he was at least 忠 and 义. He died for WRH and Wen Chao and refused to let WC desecrate Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s bodies. For that, I have to give him respect. He, despite everything, still had that jianghu sense of 义. Also, the man can count. And knows what a golden core feels like.)

So we know JGY gave Lan Xichen the maps, but he also lured them to Nightless City where the puppets were waiting. Had WWX not brought out the Stygian Tiger Amulet, would JGY have murdered WRH? Or would he have stayed in the shadows forever? As a viewer I have no idea what JGY is thinking, what he’s doing, or what he’s hoping for. He hides so well his intentions that there is debate about if he really was helping with the Sunshot Campaign or not! That isn’t something you can say about someone with loyalty. 

What upsets me further is that Nie Mingjie, having been JGY’s superior officer, sees JGY more clearly than LXC can. NMJ has seen JGY murder and has seen the level of self-serving vindictiveness JGY is capable of. In the case of the Sunshot Campaign, this self-serving attitude made JGY become a double agent uncommitted to either side. Too bad NMJ could not convince LXC of JGY’s duplicity. I’m gonna blame those dimples. 

The fact that we do not know JGY’s intent really shows his lack of 忠. If You Stand For Nothing, JGY, What Will You Fall For? (Answer: Himself and that is not 忠)

孝 - filial piety (deference to your lineage)

So for 孝, you’re supposed to respect your parents, honor your parents, and defer to your parents. What are you not supposed to do? Kill you father. That’s what.

So this should’ve been a really short section because that’s pretty cut and dry. But I want to look at what JGY says to JGS when JGY brings in Sisi and the other women. 

(He’s so creepy in this picture! *shudders*)

“父亲,我给你找来了你最爱的女人. 有很多个. 你高兴吗?”

“Father, I have brought you your favorite -- women. There are many. Are you happy?”

(Translation note: you can translate the line as your favorite women or your favorite -- women. I chose to translate it as the latter due to the context.)

First of all, the tone. JGY’s voice is breathy. I can almost hear a smile. He has zero moral qualms about this. He addresses his father as father, not dad or anything close. But he does acknowledge that relationship. And then he says he’s brought JGS’s favorite. There’s a slight emphasis on the favorite there. And it’s creepy. JGY adds the next line and goose bumps start to form on my skin. He knows his father’s sins and he’s punishing his father with it. Why are you doing this JGY?! And at the end, when it asks “Are you happy?” his voice is so sinister I want to scream. JGY clearly knows what he’s doing. He knows exactly what it means to be 孝 and chooses to make a mockery of 孝, to make a mockery of his father, and to kill his father. 

And then, after he watches JGS die, he tells Sisi and the other women to continue -- to desecrate JGS’s body. This is about as un-孝 as one can get! Remember, WWX and JC were willing to die to get JFM and YZY’s bodies back so they could be cremated and honored. The difference here is night and day! Yes, JGY was very good to his mother, including building a Guanyin Statue in her likeness and sparing Sisi who was a friend of his mother’s, but I cannot get over how much of an abomination he was toward JGS (even if JGS deserved an awful death).

仁 - benevolence, humanity, love of man

JGY has no 仁. Does JGY love anyone other than himself? Maybe his mom. (He might have some 仁 towards Su Sh*t She but that’s only suggested by the last couple of episodes.) That’s really it. He might have loved Jin Ling as his nephew. He might have loved LXC for LXC’s kindness and brotherhood. He might have loved Qin Su as whatever relationship he thinks they had. But when push comes to shove, JGY has zero benevolence towards anyone. He’s willing to kill Qin Su, take Jin Ling hostage, and take LXC hostage. (He also has no 义 but that’s the next section!)

And there’s ep 23. When LXC, JGS, and NMJ were discussing what to do with the Wens,  JGY suggested the Wens be imprisoned at QiongQi Path. Since WRH had ordered the slaughter of multiple clans, including the Jiangs at Lotus Pier, doing the same to him would not be considered unreasonable. Ruthless, yes, but a good show of might and order. This acceptance of murder is due to the concept of 诛九族. 诛九族 (zhū jiǔ zú) is one of the most severe punishments in ancient China. The character breakdown makes it fairly self explanatory:

诛 - to execute, kill, put to death

九 - nine

族 - family, clan,ethnic group, or tribe

诛九族 condemns you and your entire family to death (Depending on the source, some say it’s you + 8 types of relatives. Some say it’s everyone related to you from 4 generations above to 4 generations below).

By suggesting the Wen remnants be imprisoned and not slaughtered, JGY presented himself as 仁. However, by turning around and slaughtering the people per JGS’s wishes, JGY knowingly chose the immoral path where blood flowed like rivers. 

(Also! The way this shot pans down makes me think about how JGY is descending into a hell of his own making...)

义-  righteousness and code of brotherhood

Good god, 义. I have so many feelings about 义. Let’s start with some history because CONTEXT is so important. So when you ask a chinese person on the street to give you an example of 义, I’m willing to bet one of the most common answers you will get is 桃园结义 (tao yuan jie yi, or peach garden/grove establishment of brotherhood). This is THE story of fraternal love between non-blood related men. 

So quick and dirty synopsis of 桃园结义 and the three kingdoms story (I actually haven’t read it and it’s been a while since I actually tried to figure out the plot… so hopefully this is all correct!). Three men (刘备、关羽、张飞/ Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei) met on the streets, fought each other, became besties, and decided to start a rebellion. They took over one third of the country with the oldest (刘备) being the monarch and the other two working at his side (a little Yunmeng bros feel there, right? You’ll be the leader, I’ll be your right hand man). And they died for each other. 关羽 was the first to go. To seek revenge, 张飞 worked his men to the rebellion. Two of 张飞’s subordinates ultimately decapitated him while he was sleeping and brought it to their enemy. 张飞’s head and body are buried in two different cities in China (doesn’t this make you think of NMJ’s fate? Because it did when I was thinking about this and I wanted to cry. Also, 张飞 started out as a butcher. SERIOUSLY CQL/MDZS, can we pretend to be SUBTLE!?). 刘备 continued seeking revenge. Prior to 关羽’s death, the three kingdoms were in semi-equilibrium where the two smaller ones were allied against the larger. However, 关羽 being killed by their kinda-ally destroyed the delicate balance between the three kingdoms. 刘备 could’ve tried to make peace but he wasn’t going to let his sworn brother’s murder go unavenged. They all died in the end but with honor and brotherhood intact. 刘备 and 张飞’s determination to avenge 关羽’s death epitomizes the virtue of 义. They are willing to die for eachother. 

In CQL the parallelism to the 桃园结义 imagery is obvious to anyone who has a cultural background that screams Romance of Three Kingdoms at you. Let’s take a look, ok?

Are you freaking out now about the visual parallels? Ok. Good. Because we’re moving onto a tiny bit of text comparison because i’m excited and i can. 

Per Romance of Three Kingdoms (note: historically inspired novel, not history), 刘备、关羽、张飞 swore the following oath: 

“念刘备、关羽、张飞，

Hope that Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei

虽然异姓，既结为兄弟，

Even though we have different last names,since we have sworn to be brothers

则同心协力，救困扶危；

Then let us unite our hearts and efforts towards helping the needy

上报国家，下安黎庶。

Repaying our country, bringing peace to the people.

不求同年同月同日生，

We do not ask to be born on the same day of the same month of the same year

只愿同年同月同日死。

But hope to die on the same day of the same month of the same year

皇天后土，实鉴此心，

Heaven and earth, verify our hearts

背义忘恩，天人共戮！”

If we turn our backs to righteousness and forget charity, may we be slaughtered by all. 

Now, let’s look at the oath said by the 3zun:

“神明在上。

Brilliant gods above, 

今日我兄弟三人在此立下重誓，

Today, we three brothers swear a solemn oath here 

上报仙门，下安黎庶 ， 

To repay our cultivation sects, To bring peace to the people.

天地同证，如有异心，

Heaven and earth be our witnesses. If we become disloyal, 

千夫所指，天人共怒”

May a thousand men point their fingers at us and may we be incite the anger of all

Even some of the wording is verbatim. The parts I bolded are what I was excited by since they’re either parallel or verbatim. 

The first set of lines: 上报国家，下安黎庶 and 上报仙门，下安黎庶 . (Remember when I guessed in my WWX post that since there are no countries, the cultivation sects are the target of 忠? This is my proof that I was right!) My hubris aside, this is the part of their oath where they swear to be both 忠 and 仁 together. The wording is verbatim except for the part that doesn’t apply to the CQL universe! 

The second set of lines: 天人共戮 vs 天人共怒. The sentence/phrase format and message is identical-- betray this oath and incur wrath.  (I can’t help but headcanon NMJ wanted to say 天人共戮 because it’s so much more metal but JGY was like, that’s really severe and convinced LXC to side with him to get it changed.)

Even the structure of the oaths are similar. Both oaths start with an introduction (we are three who want to be brothers), both oaths ask the heaven and earth to see them (Heaven and earth, verify our hearts & heaven and earth be our witnesses), and both oaths call upon the wrath of the people for vindication in case of betrayal. The CQL version is an abridged version of the three kingdoms oath and the writers set that up along with all the imagery because they want us to be constantly thinking about the three kingdoms bros and their amazing “even after death we’re still brothers” sense of 义.  They want us to compare JGY’s 义 with that 义 and find JGY lacking. 

The obvious betrayal of 义 is NMJ’s death.  Not only is JGY the cause of NMJ’s death, he butchers (i’m cringing at my own pun... but it’s so accurate) NMJ’s body so that NMJ’s spirit cannot rest. 

But, to me, what JGY does to LXC is betrayal on par with what he does to NMJ (and not dissimilar to what Xue Yang does to Xiao Xingchen). As we went over in the section about 仁, JGY says one thing so that LXC suggest JGY handles the matter. When everyone leaves, JGY does the un-仁 thing, essentially with LXC’s blessing. JGY kills NMJ but he does it by asking LXC to teach him how to play guqin. LXC becomes an unknowing accomplice (like XXC who becomes the killer of tongueless victims of corpse poison). 

So remember in my WWX post how I said WWX took on what he perceived as JC’s debts so JC doesn’t end up 不仁不义? JGY says one thing and does another in front of LXC. He knows LXC cares deeply about being righteous and kind. He knows LXC wants to do good. And he leads LXC down a path of self doubt and regret. LXC ends up teaching JGY the techniques that kill NMJ. LXC lets JGY handle the Wen remnants. Thus, unlike WWX who tries to absolve JC, JGY intentionally puts LXC into the position of 不仁不义. 

Can WWX and JGY be more diametrically opposed (foes)?

Horsetense looked up from reading a romance novel, to judge by the cover art.  Smiling, she replied, “I really did not expect to see you again, after yesterday’s little upsets!  Here, let me send it up!”

She took Daring Do’s envelope and put it into a vacuum cartridge and dropped it into a tube.  With a whoosh, it was gone.  In a few minutes there was a whoosh and clunk as a cartridge returned.  It held a copy of the original document and a note:

“This is the ONLY acceptable agreement.  We will not back you at all if you do not sign!

Isa Robber

Mystic Overthrow

Crule Tyranny”

Reading the note, Daring smiled and wrote across the Document in deep soaking indelible marker, “These terms are the sort of toxic trash that the composting facilities will refuse!  I do too!  Find another sucker!  D.D.”

Horsetense looked sour as she returned the document with a clack and whoosh.  She observed, “The Partners won’t like that!”

Daring Do patted her hoof and replied, “They don’t seem to like anything that is honest.  I hope that you find a better position than this one soon.”

She turned on her hoof and was leaving when the system did its whoosh-clack.  The note in it said:

“Our generous offer is withdrawn.

Good luck in your year long wait to sell your latest major find to the Royal Museum! R.O.T.”

Daring Do smiled serenely, showed the receptionist the note and told Horsetense, “See this? You might find the noon news amusing!”

She sauntered out, the note safely in her saddle bag.

She was about to return to the Adventurer’s Guild for a nice luncheon when her brows drew down in a V of concentration.  Not only the waiter’s news but many other things began to fall out of their accustomed places, making a mess of her orderly mind.

It was a feeling that she knew well.  It had led her to almost all of past expeditions.  When things are not as they should be, the first stop is the Royal Library.

As she climbed the steps, she admired the allegorical carving of the doors.  The sun and moon arising together over the field of knowledge.  The doors, obeying an ancient spell, opened impressively for her.

Inside, she was greeted by the wonderful odor of books, scrolls, manuscripts, codices of many sorts. This was the scent of her true heart.  

Lurking in the overall scent, was the recent addition of fire proofing and extinguishing spells. They were a wise precaution whose necessity was shown by the Golden Oak Library disaster of Ponyville.  Some still wondered how one of the most magically powerful beings of Equestria, Twilight Sparkle, could have forgotten something so basic as fire suppression spells, just when she most needed them.  That, however, was not germane to her visit.

She walked up to the research desk and presented her Royal Pass, personally sealed by both Luna and Celestia.  “I need full access to the Closed and Sealed Stacks, please,” she smiled at the young librarian.

Wide eyed, after staring at the pass, she turned and almost galloped to a Senior Librarian.  She whispered, pointing back at Daring Do.

The senior came over and asked, “Reason for your visit, Antiquarian Do?”

“I have come across some discrepancies in research concerning the ancient X'ibian Empire.  I already know, from previous work here, that the answers are not to be found in the ordinary open or closed stacks.”

The senior took Daring Do’s pass and inserted it into a spell reader.  It chimed.  The four nearest Closed Research Stacks simply faded away leaving a huge pair of doors appearing to be iron bound ancient oak.  Daring Do was not deceived. She knew that the reality behind the glamor spell was four tonne Military Armor Grade steel, sealed from forced entry or exit.  She also knew that there were excellent reasons for being sealed against both!  This was not a library for the faint of heart!

Resuming her pass, she asked, “May I have Apprentice Librarian Blendin to assist my studies, please?  He and I have worked together before this.  I have found him to be an excellent assistant.”

Before setting the opening spell, the Senior Librarian made a note and called over a Magic Net system, “Apprentice Librarian Blendin to the Canterlot Main Doors, please.”

It took a few minutes before the signal that he was present lit.  The Senior Librarian tapped the opening spell.  The great doors did not swing or retract, as one might expect.  They became a thin seeming vapor.

Daring Do trotted through it without any problem.  She smiled at her half brother and said, “We have a fun one!  The Heart of Discord not only might be real, it might even be something that belongs here or in the Warehouse!”

Blendin’s brows shot up.  “I would be laughing right now, Sis, if it was anypony but you who said that.  What brings this on?”

Daring Do snickered and replied, “Disorder in what I thought I knew and a conversation with somepony from an organiation that I ran into while searching for the Darkling’s Tomb.”

Showing a side that was rarely seen when he was off work, Blendin promptly asked, “The Ancient Guardians?”

“Exactly.  One told me today that they lost the location of Im Farst’s tomb during the Chineighese invasions of a thousand years ago.  In short, THEY are certain that the Heart of Discord is there.  They just don’t know any longer, where, exactly.”

Blendin’s eyes got a far-away look to them as he dug through the encyclopedic knowledge that even an Apprentice Librarian needed.

“Where do you want to start, Sis?”

“At the beginning.  With the death and funeral of Im Farst.”

Blendin nodded briskly.  “That is easy, then.  There are only three contemporary documents of it. They are followed by the wall painting but it is later.  It will take a few to access them.  Are you willing to use a Twilight Closed Reading spell to keep from disturbing the actual documents.  They are very fragile.”

“If you recommend it, Blendin, yes.  What are they?”

“One is an actual scroll painting on lotus root paper.  It is likely the most delicate.  It is a traditional Xibian landscape with a weeping dragon and a eulogy to Im Farst.  The eulogy is signed Wisdom.  The other two are thin sliced bamboo fold books, both with fire damage.”

He actually went to an OLD physical card file and leafed gently.  Puzzled, he checked again.  “I wonder how long ago this happened?” he inquired of empty air. “There are FOUR things here.  I found two cards stuck together.  I will have to speak to a Senior Librarian about that.”

Daring Do overheard him and looked up from her magically generated pages of perfectly duplicated documents.  They WERE fascinating in their own right.

“What did you find, Blendin?”

“A carved stone inventory made at the time of interment.  It is cracked across but otherwise intact. I assume that you want it?”

“Absolutely!  Also, any provenance or location of finding!  Not only the stone, but everything known of it!”

Blendin smiled sadly and gave her a thin file.  “The stone was found in a Chineighese open air market about eight hundred years ago and given into Royal Care.  Not much help there.”

He did develop the copy spell, giving Daring Do all of the visible surfaces of the stone, top, thin sides and back.

Daring Do began to scan the stone, her brows knitting now and again as she found and solved an ideogram that was new to her.  She pulled out a magnifier for much of it.  The ancient engraving was surprisingly small and tightly compacted.

Blendin watched his half sister’s reading with awe.  “How can you do that, Sis?  I know at least a hundred scholars of Ancient X'ibian and not one of them can just snap out the meaning of a new ideogram like that!”

She looked up for a moment. “It’s really not too hard, Blendin.  The construction of ancient X'ibian ideograms follows a rigidly logical system from about a hundred bases.  Once you know those, the rest follows, except for bad handwriting, of course.”  She grinned.  “That is nothing new at all.”

Blendin nodded agreement and then brightened up.  “I need to do an advancement paper in the Library.  Mind if I take that tip and develop it?”

Absently muttering, “Be my guest,” Daring Do returned to her study.

“Pardon, Sis.  I need more space for you.”  Blendin grabbed the end of the Library table and pulled.  It stretched out another three meters, growing extra legs as it did so.

Daring Do raised her eyebrows as she watched.  “Handy trick, that!”

“You know it, Sis.  I needed the space to set out the more modern works, you know, from four hundred PNW to the End of Exile.”

“Four hundred Post Nightmare Wars?  Nothing earlier?”

“According to the Master Index, nope.  A long dry spell there.  Then the liter-ature explodes.  All the mystical shit and such.”

She nodded and returned to deciphering the fold books and the painting.  She was nearly done with the painting when she asked, “Can I get modern paper copies of these old documents?  I just spotted something curious.”

“Not a problem, Sis.  I will do a contagion duplication on them.  You will be able to take those copies if they pass the Security of Information checks.  I did not bother looking at that info when I set them up for you.”

Blendin was systematically setting out the later documents by date when he stopped cold.  

“This makes no sense at all, Sis.  Check me on this.  When Im Farst was buried in his hidden tomb there was no trace of the Heart of Discord.  

“Then, IN EQUESTRIA, the tales of the Heart of Discord begin to show up in print about four hundred PNW.  The wall painting that is the only known documentation of it was not found until 653 PNW.  

“It gets worse.  The tomb that the painting is in dates quite exactly.  It was made 150 years after the death of Im Farst but not found until 653 PNW.”

Daring Do stared at Blendin’s work in rising excitement.

“It makes perfect sense after all!  Who was the wife of Im Farst?”

Blendin actually took time to consult the Index again.  “Her name was Wisdom.  Legend says that she was a dragon.  How does that make any sense at all?”

Daring Do took a sheet of paper and a writing brush.  Inking it professionally, she wrote a character.

“First, remember that there were no male or female names in ancient X'ibian.  This thing called a SHI was added to a surname or single name to indicate female and left off for male names!  It was silent in ancient X'ibian.

“Now look at this!”  She quickly drew another character.  “That is the ancient character for Wisdom.  This one is Discord, the Dragonequis.  Add a Shi to Discord and what do you see?”

Blendin stared at the two characters in consternation.  “Wisdom!  Discord with a Shi and Wisdom look the same!”

“Right!  Im Farst really was married to a dragon.  Eris, the female form of Discord.  

“The Vase of Wisdom is in all of these inventories!  A hundred and fifty years later, on a tomb wall, the vase was named without the Shi and the Heart of Discord was born!”

Blendin looked carefully at his time-line of publications and written down tales.  He thoughtfully accessed the Index again.

He added a whole selection of more material from the Last Nightmare War onward.  

Softly, he said, “Here she is. It all begins with the Tales of Aleax the Blind.  This dates to only 115 PNW.  Eris, the Dragonequis, is asked if ever she knew love.  Her reply is, ‘In a land far to the East, I left my love a vase that I made.  I left my Heart in his tomb.  Im Farst was his name.’  She shed a few tears and asked what reward was wanted for bringing her that memory.”

Daring Do sadly offered, “That explains so much.  Blendin, I need these inventories, including the stone’s upper surface and that landscape painting with the Im Farst eulogy on it.”

Blendin went to the Index and lifted a very modern Magic Net mirror up from a concealed pocket.  He tapped codes and looked carefully at the results.  Grinning, he tapped a whole set of new codes.

“They will accept my paper on the reading of Ancient X'ibian ideograms!  They also cleared modern paper copies of the things you asked for.  They are now locked to the papers that they are on.  Feel free to take them, Sis!”

Returning, Daring Do saw the enormous steel doors simply go to mist again.  She paused long enough to say, “Best of fortune on the paper, Blendin.  It is going to keep you busy, I promise it.”

With a grin, he replied, “I know, Sis.  I do know.  Thanks for the tip.”

Daring Do walked out to the Research Desk and Logged out, showing her copies to the Senior Librarian.  There was no sign behind her of the massive secret doors. Just the ordinary closed stacks.

If Daring Do was walking like nothing of any importance had changed, her mind was racing!  It WAS real!  The Vase, the Heart of ERIS, rather than Discord, was there. The tomb of Im Farst was a fact!

She was pretty sure how to find it too!  That, she had failed to mention to her half brother, Blendin.  Best not to give any possible rumor a root to grow.

Ensconced in the Adventurer’s Guild’s secure communication room, Daring Do tapped up codes on the Secure Magic Net Mirror there.  She was greeted by the surly face of Count Umber.  He still had a plaster on the bruise over his right eye from their earlier altercation.  He reached to cut off the call.

With a smile that could have flash frozen a polar bear, Daring Do said serenely, “Please do, Count.  Princess Luna audits all incoming calls.  When she finds that you cut off a Private Antiquities Emergency call, you will be in so much hot water that you will be lucky to retain your County.  Luna herself gave me this code after the debacle of the Golden Necklace of Pharow Underrock.”

Putting the knife in deeper and twisting, she added, “That was at the same time that she gave you your present work.  It is amazing how much better the Museum Acquisition Policy has become.  I have already been paid for the balance of the Pharow Underrock Collection.”

With a growl that would have done credit to hungry bear, Count Umber put her through.  Princess Luna was sitting in a bath up to her withers, gently fanning her wings in the warm water.  There was a squadron of blue bath duckies hidden by lumps of bubble foam.  They were preparing to ambush a similar squadron of yellow bath duckies.

She looked up from her bath game and said, “What is the problem with the Underrock Collection? Umber has noted that you are calling about it.”

“With due respect, your Highness, he is absolutely wrong.  I am calling about a thing connected to the legal firm of R.O.T.”

Princess Luna sat up suddenly, water cascading off her shoulders.  “COUNT UMBER!  GET OFF THIS LINE!  ALL CALLS ON THIS CODE GROUP ARE ABSOLUTELY PRIVATE!  You were given strict instructions about the call system.  YOU HAVE VIOLATED ONE OF THE MOST BASIC ONES!  We will discuss your position in Canterlot when this call is done!”

She tapped a few codes in her bathroom mirror.  “There.  The nuisance is removed.  By Royal Guards.  Now we are private.  What do you need to discuss?”

“R.O.T. is mounting an expedition to X'ibia, in the far desert regions of the Chineighese Empire.  They are searching for the Heart of Discord.  Their care with priceless antiquities  was shown during the break in at my University office.”

“There have been many expeditions to search for the Heart of Discord, Daring Do.  None has ever succeeded, lending much credence to the notion that it is legendary.  Why are you so concerned now?”

“Because, your Highness, today, doing research at the Great Library, I discovered that the Vase of Wisdom is perfectly real.  Wisdom was Im Farst’s wife, the Dragon Queen of ancient X'ibia.

“How well do you know the writing of that ancient land?”

“Excellently, my dear.  So, what you found is the connection between Eris now and Wisdom, the Dragon Queen then?”

“You do not seem surprised, your Highness.”

“Only saddened that it will arouse such heartbreaking memories in my friend.  We must tell her that the secret is out.  How much more do you know of this matter?”

“I believe that I know where Im Farst’s tomb is.  Wisdom painted a landscape with a weeping dragon and inscribed her eulogy to him.  I have a copy from the Library.  I am fairly sure that it shows the tomb’s hidden location.”

Luna sort of sank into her bath. “You are correct.  We must tell her.  Now.  Together.  I cried with her for many nights when he died.”

Stiffing up, Luna tapped some other codes to the mirror.

The call was answered by an amazingly lovely pony with one perfectly centered cyclops like eye. “ERIS, Inc.!  How may I direct your call please, Princess Luna?”

“Hello, Cy.  I hate to interrupt whatever Eris is doing but I have urgent news for her. Just tell her that Wisdom has been found.  She will know what I mean.”  

“Wisdom has been found.  I will tell her.”

Almost instantly, the mirror switched to show Eris, wearing the silken robes of the Chineighese. An eye as trained as Daring Do’s saw that they were in the style of ancient X'ibia.

There was a copy of the Wisdom Eulogy to Im Farst hung to the wall and both incense and tea being offered before it on an ornate, low table of black wood, richly inlaid with natural woods of many colors.

Eris asked mildly, “Luna, if it was any but you calling, I would have required them to wait.  What do you mean that Wisdom has been found?”

Daring Do spoke up.  “A Shi is supposed to be silent and only indicate gender.  A Shi added to Discord, the dragonequis, makes Eris, that is you.  It also turns the ideogram into Wisdom, the name that you used when you lived your life with Im Farst, whom I see that you still love.”

There was a small tear at Eris’ eye.  “That is true, all of it.  What do I need to know beyond the fact that you found it out?”

“The law firm of R.O.T. is mounting an expedition to X'ibia to locate the Heart of Discord.  Of course, THAT really is legendary, the result of twisting the words of Aleax the Blind to say that you left a Vase, your heart, in his tomb. That is where the legends of the Heart of Discord come from.

“Even with the trickery that they use, they have begun to set up the expedition.  R.O.T. could find the tomb.”

Eris said softly, “Their care with Antiquities is amply shown by the break in at your office.  I see.  What do you need from me?”

Daring Do smiled and replied, “Two sorts of things.  One is your permission to open the tomb and conserve the things in it.  The other is a little more personal. Anything that you can think of that might mess up the R.O.T. expedition and throw them off the trail.”

Eris began to smile hugely around her fang.  “Doctor Do, I know your reputation in detail.  I will trust you to open my love’s tomb and conserve all as well as it can be done.  Expect my document of permission within the hour.  Cy will deliver it in person.

“As for your other request, let us say that I will consider it favorably.

“Now, I have much to attend to, including letting my love know that you are coming.”  The mirror blanked.

Luna’s bath duckies were all joined into a large squadron, attacking the bath bubble foam furiously!  She looked up with a serious face.  “While you were talking to Eris, I set it up with my sister, Celestia.  We are putting your Expedition under the Royal Wing.  

“You mentioned being able to manage the cost.  You will not have to.  We will cover it all with letters of credit and passage permissions that are being prepared now.  Celestia has summoned the Chineighese Ambassador to prepare your documents for free travel and official assistance.  All the papers should arrive in a few hours.  They are addressed to you at the Adventurer’s Guild.”

“Thank you, your Highness.” Daring Do blanked the mirror and emerged from the room.  The waiter from this morning was there, tears in his eyes.  “Our long Guardianship is over.  We have heard from the most exalted one. Wisdom herself has put us at your disposal.  What then shall we do for you?”

Daring Do gave him a deep formal bow and replied, “We will need you still.  There are more than Im Farst to guard.  If you will come with me, I will show you what I mean.”

Deepest concern in his voice, brows drawn in honest worry, he asked, “What will become of Im Farst and all of his things?”

Daring Do replied honestly, “I do not know.  I will gather him and all of those things and they will be given to the Most Exalted Wisdom.  She will then decide what may be kept for study, placed in museums on display and what she will keep for her own.   All will be a gift of my Princesses to Wisdom. This plan has been made and will be kept.”

He needed no thought.  “This is the best that can be hoped for.  He will be reunited with Wisdom. May they find all the joy that can be between Mortal and the Dragon.”

COMIC BOOK REFERENCES & EASTER EGGS - Dark Phoenix (2019)

Dark Phoenix, the final X-Men film released under 20th Century Fox, may not be the conclusion audiences were hoping for, but there were still a few nods to the comics that are sure to please fans. The following is a guide to all the ones I’ve spotted along with any deviations from the source material (I will update this as more come to light). Note that owing to the convoluted and complex nature of comic books, I’ve tried to include only the most essential information regarding a character’s history and backstories.

Jean Grey’s parents are indeed named John and Elaine Grey in the comics, though Elaine did not die in a car accident as depicted in the film. A similar incident, however, did awaken Jean’s mutant powers. In Bizarre Adventures #27 (1981) we learn that when Jean was 10 years old, she saw her friend, Annie Richardson, die after being hit by a car, with Jean experiencing Annie’s trauma via a telepathic link.

The cinematic incarnation of Jean Grey encountering the Phoenix Force while in space is similar to how her comic book counterpart does so in X-Men #100 (1976). Escaping Steven Lang’s orbital platform, the X-Men board a damaged shuttle. With their journey back to Earth seeing them pass through a solar flare, Jean volunteers to pilot the craft, using her telekinetic powers to shield herself from the radiation. The radiation proves too much and she succumbs to its effects. Instead of dying, however, she’s saved by the Phoenix Force—a cosmic manifestation of all the life force in the universe.

This is the second film to adapt “The Dark Phoenix Saga” (The Uncanny X-Men #129-138, 1980). After being bonded with the Phoenix Force, Jean’s telepathic and telekinetic abilities grow in power. Following an incident with the Hellfire Club, Jean—whose psyche is taken over by the Phoenix Force and is now going by the name Dark Phoenix—heads off into space and destroys a star, resulting in the entire population of an orbiting planet to be wiped out. Returning to her childhood home, Dark Phoenix battles the X-Men, and after a psychic duel with Xavier, Jean Grey’s psyche is restored with the professor implanting psionic barriers. However, the X-Men are then teleported to the Shi’ar flagship with Jean being sentenced to death for committing genocide. Xavier challenges the Shi’ar Imperial Guard to a duel of honour with his X-Men, the two teams battling on the Blue Area of the Moon the following day. During the confrontation, the Dark Phoenix persona re-emerges and Jean, realising that she cannot control it, sacrifices herself, activating an ancient weapon that kills her. This being comics, though, it would later be revealed that the Jean that died was a duplicate created by the Phoenix Force and that the real Jean was inside a healing cocoon at the bottom of Jamaica Bay.

The black costumes with large yellow Xs on the chest the X-Men sport in the film are reminiscent of the ones the mutant team wears during Grant Morrison’s run on New X-Men (#114-154, 2001-04).

At the party in the woods, a mutant can be seen producing lights while singing. This is Alison Blaire/Dazzler, who made her debut during “The Dark Phoenix Saga” in The Uncanny X-Men #130 (1980). The mutant lighting a bonfire is Ben Hamill/Match, who, as his name implies, has pyrokinesis.

Jean Grey kills Mystique early on in the movie. The character has also died in the source material, having been stabbed by Wolverine in Wolverine #9 (2011), though would later be resurrected by the Hand.

In the comics, Genosha is an island located off Africa’s east coast. The nation prospered by enslaving the mutants that lived there before the X-Men, and subsequently Magneto’s Acolytes, came to put a stop to this. It would then be given to Magneto by the United Nations (in the film it’s the US government who gives him the land) on which he established a haven for mutants.

The comic book incarnation of Selene is a usually associated with the Hellfire Club, holding the title of Black Queen within the Inner Circle. A mutant and a sorceress, she maintains her youthful appearance by psionically draining the life force of other humans, which also results in her gaining the victim’s memories. Selene also possesses telepathy and can telekinetically manipulate inanimate objects (but not organic substances).

In the film Andrew Stehlin plays Ariki, a character who doesn’t have a direct counterpart in the source material but whose hair-controlling powers are reminiscent of the Inhuman Medusa. It was originally reported that the actor was playing Red Lotus, who in the comics isn’t a mutant but a skilled martial artist and the heir to the Sydney Triad. The character was previously referenced in Deadpool 2, with his name (rendered in Chinese) appearing on the card Deadpool throws away before attacking a Chinese triad.

In both media, the D’Bari are an alien race whose home world is destroyed as a result of the Phoenix Force (in the film the Force itself is responsible, whereas in the comics Jean as the Dark Phoenix consumes a star which then becomes a supernova that obliterates its orbiting planets). Their ability to shape-shift, however, appears to have been taken from the Skrulls.

The cinematic incarnation of Vuk is female (or rather, takes on a female human form as a disguise), whereas in he comics the character is male. The comic book incarnation of Vuk was off world when his planet was destroyed and later in a quest for vengeance tried to kill Jean Grey.

At the end of Dark Phoenix, the school is renamed as the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters. A similar thing has happened in the comics, with Wolverine changing the name of the school to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning in Wolverine and the X-Men #1 (2011). We also see Beast become headmaster, a position he actually hasn’t held in the source material (though he has become the Vice Principal).
