headcanon about tails having a nightmare in his sibling houses and how his siblings comfort him 🥺

Sonic

sonic's a pro at handling his little bro's nightmares. he's been dealing with them since he met the kid, so you best believe he knows the most efficient way to get the boy back to dreamland.

doesn't mean it doesn't tug on his heart when he hears that quiet little "sonic?" after tails creaks his bedroom door open. any amount of exhaustion disappears from sonic the second his brother is in his doorway.

he'll sit up in his bed and hold the cover up, opening his arm as an invitation for tails to come lay with him. the kit's in his lap in seconds, tears already staining his cheeks.

they'll sit like that for a while, sonic hugging his brother tightly and promising to not let go until he was ready. eventually tails will talk about his nightmare once he's feeling calmer. he's pretty tired after that, talking about it makes him feel better.

sonic's words of comfort change depending on what the nightmare was about. though, once he notices the fox dozing off in his arms, he'll lay back down and curl around tails to provide a sense of safety.

Knuckles

while knuckles hasn't dealt with the nightmares nearly as much as sonic has, he's ward off the kit's bad dreams quite a few times.

tails isn't around him when night falls often, but knuckles will have to babysit him every now and then. usually when he's sick, or if sonic will be gone for a particularly long time and tails doesn't feel like being alone for so long.

tails doesn't go to knuckles the same way he does sonic. not due to lack of trust, but because he rather not bother his oldest brother. sonic told him he was okay with it, but he never had the confirmation from knuckles.

so he'll pull his knees to his chest and rock back and forth, quietly sniffling and trying to hold back tears.

knuckles will always wake when this happens. he's a light sleeper, it's fairly easy to wake him. though, tails always feels bad when it happens.

after figuring out what happened, knuckles will take hold of the fox and set him on his chest, slightly exaggerating his steady breathing for his brother to follow.

instead of asking about the nightmare (to avoid making the younger uncomfortable), knuckles will tell the kit stories he's learned of his people or any other discoveries he's made on angel island.

tails always appreciates the distraction and happily listens as he grows increasingly tired before eventually falling back to sleep, curled up on his brother's chest and softly snoring away.

Amy

when waking up from a nightmare while staying with his sister, tails often fights with himself about whether or not he should wake her up.

amy always made it clear that she had no issues with being woken up for any matter, but tails thinks she deserves her sleep. she's always working, much like himself, so she deserves a break.

usually he'll pace up and down the hallway, which eventually wakes up the girl once she realizes the soft footsteps belong to a very agitated fox.

amy'll usually catch him off guard when she pops her head of the her bedroom door to check up on him. tails will making a noise before blubbering on about how he didn't mean to wake her n whatnot.

eventually he'll reveal he had a nightmare, and amy's big sis mode kicks in. she smiles softly and guides him to her kitchen, sitting him at the table.

she'll brew him up his favorite tea and pull out a few mint pastries they had baked together earlier that day. as tails eats and sips his tea, amy will ask him a few questions about the nightmare.

if he shows signs that the subject upsets him, she'll switch to ask about his latest adventure or invention, letting the kid info dump himself right back to sleep.

she'll carry him back to her room and tuck him in her bed before crawling in with him, giving his forehead a kiss and whispering goodnight before drifting back to sleep with tails snuggled into her side.

Shadow

shadow isn't a very happy person when he's woken up too early. knowing this, tails does his best to keep quiet when he wakes up from a bad dream. 

he'll grab his backpack and silently exit the spare room rouge had set up for him and walk into the living room.

depending on his mood, tails will pull out an in-progress invention or a coloring books and his pack of crayons to help keep his mind occupied on something other than the nightmare he just had.

he'll go into the kitchen and grab a cup with the intention to fill it with water, but he drops it and the noise is just loud enough to wake up the ultimate lifeform.

shadow enters a rooms a few seconds later, staring at the kit with a raised brow. he'll ask what the hell the kid is doing awake at 1 in the morning, which causes tails to timidly explain he had a bad dream.

shadow'll sigh and pick up the cup, filling it with water before ushering his brother back into the living room. he'll sit on the couch and pull the boy up next to him, telling him he has a few minutes to do what he wants before he has to go back to bed.

tails'll comply and do his thing while shadow watches. the kit'll strike up a few conversations, but they're both quiet otherwise.

usually tails will crawl into shadow's lap and drift off to sleep before the time runs out. the older will roll his eyes (affectionately) before moving to lay down on the couch.rouge'll wake up to shadow and tails snuggled up on the couch, sleeping peacefully throughout the morning. she decides to let them sleep in, what harm will it do anyway?
