“Come on, Hotch, just a hint,” Morgan says.

They’re in the bullpen, all having arrived earlier than normal because Hotch has let it slip that a new member will be joining their team. The past week has been spend with everyone trying to pry about information that could lead them to this new member, but Hotch hasn’t blinked.

The only one who plays it cool is Prentiss, but she’s always trying to obstruct how invested she truly is.

“You will find out soon enough, if you just have patience, Morgan,” Hotch tells him and they all groan.

“Really, just a little bit, Hotch, please,” Garcia begs. She has left her lair to get a glimpse of the new guy and is hoping they won’t have a case today so that she can question them, before looking up all their secrets to see if she trusts them near her family.

“I thought you were all seasoned agents, who have the basic skill of patience,” Hotch raises a brow, but no one takes it seriously anymore.

“You can’t blame us, Aaron,” Rossi says.

“No, I can’t and you’re all lucky, because he’s coming in right now,” Hotch says.

Immediately they all turn to face the door where a lanky kid is standing, clutching a very familiar leather satchel as he waves at them.

“SPENCER!” Garcia is up and running on her heels to give the newly arrived doctor a big hug, which he returns with a smile.

“Hi, Garcia,” he greets her sheepishly.

“Why didn’t you tell us? Tell me?” she demands immediately. “You must have been in the academy for months, why didn’t I know?”

“Because I asked them to not let any of you know,” Hotch says stepping in. “Spencer wanted to get her on his own power and we can’t have rumors of nepotism going around because all of you can’t help yourself and would have gone to say hi to him many times.”

“The letter help?” Prentiss asks with a smile.

“They would have let me in without, but it was a help, yes,” Reid says.

“Oh my god, you totally knew,” Morgan realizes as he points between her and Reid.

Prentiss shrugs and smirks: “A girl never reveals her secrets, Derek.”

Hotch gets their attention and he says: “I want to do this officially. Members of the BAU, please meet our newest agent, SSA Dr. Spencer Reid.”

Rossi steps forwards first and shakes his hand: “I’m proud of you, Reid. Good to have your brains on our side again.”

“Wow, damn, kid,” Morgan ruffles his hair. “SSA Dr. Spencer Reid. Sounds good, kid.”

JJ hugs him: “We’re really happy to have you, Spence. It’s good to see you again. How’s your mother?”

“She’s doing much better and they were really impressed with how well Christmas at Hotch’s went last year,” Reid says. “She’ll probably be allowed more small excursions, which I think will really help her. She’s also very proud of me, even if she still mistrust the government greatly. And she’s worried I’ll get hurt, but that’s just a mom-thing, I think.”

“I’ll be sure to keep her updated on you well-being,” JJ smiles.

Reid smiles back: “She’ll probably really appreciate that, thank you.”

“Come on,” Garcia tugs on his arm. “We have to decorate you desk and I have stuff for that in my office, but we also still need to pick up some cake, because this is something to celebrate and I would have prepared something if it wasn’t a welcome surprise. Not that I mind that it’s a surprise, you know, but then I can’t plan. And I loveplanning.”

Morgan jogs after them calling out a: “Don’t overwhelm him, baby girl. Also, he needs a proper tour of this place!” But Hotch later seeshim put the picture he had of him and Reid at a baseball game on Reid’s desk and smiles.

More stuff like that migrates through the day and by the end of it, Reid’s desk looks like he’s been collecting mementos with the team for years. Which he has, though not officially yet.

Hotch stops to look at it on his way out. There is the photo of Reid and Morgan, as well as a Doctor Who figurine. A picture of the whole team at Christmas last year is also present and he recognizes it from where it always stood on Rossi’s desk. Emily has left a more subtle star puzzle that makes Hotch smile when he thinks back of that plane ride after they got Diana back now already so many years ago.

Still, he can’t blame the team for spoiling the kid by decorating his desk, especially when he has his own small frame in his pocket. He had known the kid was coming, so he framed a small picture of Reid and Jack, building a Lego set together on Easter two years ago, when Reid couldn't go to visit his mom.

Reid is smiling in it, unaware he’s being photographed, otherwise he would have taken the bunny ears off, Hotch is sure. Jack is sitting in his lap, not really helping, but looking with big adoring eyes and Reid explains something about the structure they’re putting together.

He loves that picture and that day is a very good day. He is sure Reid won’t mind the addition and sets it down next to the one picture Reid brought himself.

It’s off him and his mom. It was taken the day they got her back in the jet on their way to Quantico, where Diana would get her psych eval and Reid could stay with Hotch, while being near his mom as well.

He remembers JJ putting out a camera and Reid’s confusion until she said: “I promised we would get your mom back, she’s the first person you saved. Let’s commemorate that, like Gideon does.”

She had later told Hotch about her conversation with Reid while they were on the raid, but back then they just watched confused as Reid smiled and hugged his mom, both smiling, despite how tired they were.

That was the end of the beginning. A beginning of a family Hotch never though he could have as a kid.

Now he and Hayley have little Jack as well, but Reid was their first son, even if he is only theirs on paper, not in blood. When he first met the kid, running up to him and introducing himself as doctor, no matter how unlikely, he couldn't have imagined how it would end.

Yet here they are.

They’re having dinner with the whole team at his house and Jack is really excited to see his uncles, aunts and brother again. It’s a family dinner and nothing could be more true.

“Are you coming, d- Hotch?” Reid calls out and yes, he’s going to have to get used to Reid calling him Hotch again as well as him saying Reid. But as he sees everyone standing there, he can’t be more glad he ever took the case.
