Week 10  - David Antonio Cruz

David Antonio Cruz is a Latinx, black, and queer painter and performer. Through his practice, Cruz aims to explore his heritage as well as create a space to talk about queerness. Fueled by the memory of growing up silent as a queer youth in Philadelphia, his art is now his voice, creating a conversation for those who have yet to be part of one. Cruz additionally utilizes his work to give voices to those who are unable to speak for themselves. Most recently, he painted a series of portraits of black and brown transgender women who were victims of brutal murders. The emotion Cruz invokes in lovingchild,there’salwayssomethingnew, portrait of dejanay makes even the viewer feel unspeakable loss. The sorrow in De’Janay’s eyes invokes a sorrow of the same intensity in me. suddenly,youandiwillwaitinyourdreams…tonight, portrait of Camila seemingly feels joyful and hopeful in contrast. The floral patterns and childlike mask painted over Camila’s face are bright and smiling, but upon closer observation, the black and white photo of herself Camila is clutching is sobering. This piece revives Camilla’s unrealized dream for a safer life. It is a reminder of senseless, unnecessary violence. Lastly, hauntmeinmydreams,ifyouplease, portrait of Shantee carries an air of mystery. It is a fitting mood for a painting of a woman whose murder was never solved. Shantee’s eyes, tinted red, betray the only hint of emotion, silently asking, “Why me?” The series as a whole restores humanity to these three women, who would have otherwise been forgotten. It causes audience members to rage against the brutality they were shown as well as mourn their innocence.  Amrou Al-Kadhi proposes that queer individuals are often targeted because they contradict the norm. But in his video, “Gender identity: 'What quantum physics taught me about my queer identity'”, he reveals that it has been recently found that quantum physics, the foundation of our existence, is not entirely sensical and full of its own contradictions. Al-Kadhi then goes on to come to the conclusion that contradiction, or going against the standard, is natural. It is a pity that so many people’s minds are fixed on adhering to such a narrow norm when there is so much more to take in. Love, self expression, and identity are some of the most natural aspects of humanity. It is far more unnatural to stifle yourself than to live openly. Yet living freely means your existence is painted with a target.
