0052: Mini-sode bonus: X-Men #33

Cover Date: June 1967

On-Sale: Date April 11, 1967

I'm not sure how Doc managed to slip in even this brief appearance since it seems just moments ago, the Living Tribunal banished Zom and threatened to destroy the planet. Nevertheless, Doc pops up for a few panels in the not yet Uncanny and not even All-New, All-Different X-Men. This is still the original run of middling popularity. Fortunately for us we actually get two Doc related items in this issue.

As the Doc content of this issue is minimal I won't summarize the entire thing. Basically, the Juggernaut has trounced the X-Men. The National Guard is attempted to stop him. Juggy can cause earthquakes and topple mountains so that doesn't work. They flee and hope the Army can do better. We switch to the X-Men's camera which reveals that the young, gaudily dressed mutants are attempt to contact their comatose mentor. Marvel Girl attempts to contact him using some bizarre looking device.

She's somewhat successful. They can see his memories. Inexplicably, he has a memory of something that happened centuries ago. Here is our first Doc related material.

The Prof. has a memory of The still-young Ancient One travelling to the temple of Cyttorak, encountering the guardian demon and banishing the demon into the ruby of Cyttorak. Funnily enough, he even uses Cyttorak's crimson bands to do it.

Thus ends the flashback. The X-Men believe the memory comes from Prof. Chuck's probe of his step-brother's mind. Ms. Grey identifies the young mystic as The Ancient One. Despite some random sailors knowing who he is decades before, the X-Men don't seem to have ever heard of him.

The X-Men boost the power of their Cerebro machine in order to locate The Ancient One and who should pop through their walls? You guessed it! Doc has gone ghost and paid a house call to the Merry Mutants.

Oh look! Doc acknowledges that he's in the middle of a massive crisis!

We also learn that The Ancient One passed not just his power, but his know-how as well. How cool!

Doc then offers to send the hi-viz heroes to the temple of Cyttorak so they can do whatever.

Doc bolts to get back to Stonehenge where the much greater threat awaits and he probably shouldn't have made this detour in the first place. I'm guessing the spell he puts in their heads will take them to Cyttorak's dimension as it isn't explicitly stated. He must have caught a matinee of Fantastic Voyage as he gives the mutants an hour to complete trashing Juggy or they'll be stuck in the Crimson Cosmos forever.

The TD;LR for the rest of the issue: Jean and Scott head to Cyttorak while Bobby, Hank and Warren head to go mano a mano with Juggy. They aren't having a great time doing it. Jean and Scott wind up facing the same demon that The Ancient One easily conquered centuries ago. They aren't having a great time doing it. Jean and Scott defeat the demon using Jean's wristwatch (yes, her wristwatch) and manage to get the prototype Cyttorak ruby back to the X-Mansion. Jean and Scott head out to help their teammates. A mysterious figure sneaks into the medical room of the X-Mansion and looks ominously at the Chuckster. Jean and Scott trick Juggy into handling the proto-ruby and disappears. The mutants return and Chucky is gone!

It's pretty minor for a Doc appearance. Doc has been throwing around the crimson bands for awhile and Juggy having derived his abilities from the same entity means they are inextricably linked. This story serves to establish that. Juggy will return in a couple of years to menace Doc directly.

Doc is a plot device in this story so he merely does enough to push the story forward. Roy Thomas, who recently penned several issues of Doc's storyline wrote this so there's nothing out of character except Doc has his usual stick up his ass that's common for this era. Werner Roth's pencils conjure a serviceable image of Doc. It works more than it doesn't.

Von generierten Formularen zur Kommandozeile

In meinem vorigen Artikel schrieb ich von mstart.de, einem der mehreren Vorläufer des (2024, zum Aufschreibezeitpunkt) heutigen trovu.net, das zuvor Kilian aus seiner Nutzersicht beschrieb. Hier geht die Geschichte nun weiter: wie aus dem Startseitengenerator eine Kommandozeile fürs Web wird.

Mit mstart habe ich also alle meine häufigen Suchformulare auf einer (lokal heruntergeladenen) Webseite zusammengefasst. Für eine Google-Suche muss ich nur ins entsprechende Feld klicken; Infoseek und Aktiensuchen sind ebenfalls leicht zugänglich. Trotzdem benötige ich mehrere Klicks oder Tastenanschläge, und aufgrund des Platzbedarfs ist nur eine begrenzte Anzahl an Diensten verfügbar.

Zeitgleich kenne ich vom Browser Opera eine tolle Funktion: Kürzel für bestimmte Websuchen festzulegen. So kann ich “g” für Google einstellen und einfach “g berlin” eingeben, um das Google-Suchergebnis für “berlin” zu sehen.

Was leider nicht geht: ein Kürzel mit mehreren Argumenten definieren, also dass zB “db Berlin, Hamburg” die Bahn-Verbindungssuche aufrufen würde. Auch geht es nicht, die eigenen Kürzel schnell auf einem anderen Rechner nutzbar zu machen (dazu muss ich die Browser-Konfiguration migrieren), oder auf die Kürzel und deren Wartung anderer Nutzer zugreifen. Und genau dafür entwickele ich 2005 Serchilo: Es gibt nur noch ein Eingabefeld, und  dort kann ich wie bei Opera “g berlin” eingeben, aber auch “db berlin hamburg” – und kommt direkt zu den entsprechenden Ergebnisseiten. Die Kürzel-Datenbank ist dabei online gespeichert: alle Kürzel sind also an jedem neuen Rechner verfügbar, ich brauche nur serchilo.net aufzurufen (oder als Standardsuche des Browsers einzustellen).Der Name kommt übrigens aus dem Esperanto (bedeutet „Suchwerkzeug“) und liegt an meiner damaligen (und heutigen) Begeisterung für die Sprache: sie zu lernen, nach Englisch und Französisch in der Schule, ist vergleichbar mit auf Python zu stoßen, wenn man bislang nur C++ kannte. Ich bin auch nicht der einzige mit der Kommandozeilen-Idee: Alternativen heißen YubNub, Yeah Way, Yahoo Open shortcuts, Sugarcodes, Dozomo und DuckDuckGo Bangs.

Als Datenbank und Oberfläche für die Pflege der Kürzel nutze ich MediaWiki (womit auch die zu diesem Zeitpunkt neue Wikipedia läuft): da sind bereits Nutzermanagement und Versionskontrolle drin. Dennoch ist das Anlegen eines neuen Kürzels recht kompliziert: Für jedes muss man eine eigene Wiki-Seite anlegen, und anfangs sogar Reguläre Ausdrücke kennen. So sah zB. das Google-Kommando aus:

Das ist vermutlich anfangs vor allem ein Flaschenhals, durch den es nur Programmierer schaffen, aber die Serchilo-Art zu suchen ist ja eh deren Stil.

Über die nächsten fast 20 Jahre entwickele ich dann immer wieder daran weiter, es wird zu meinem Haupt-Hobbyprojekt: Das Anlegen neuer Kürzel wird einfacher, nutzerspezifische Kommandos werden möglich, es kommt Internationalisierung hinzu (ein deutscher Nutzer will ja eine andere Wikipedia aufrufen als ein französischer), und später auch Firefox-Erweiterung und Android-App.

Serchilo wird meine Spielwiese zum Ausprobieren neuer Technologien:

nach Mediawiki implementiere ich es 2011 in Ruby on Rails (ohne je damit live zu gehen, weil es mir dann doch nicht gefällt)

2012 in Drupal, weil damit meine Freunde freelancen, was ich auch will

2014 nochmal in Drupal, aber besser, mit all meinen gelernten Erfahrungen, und dann quelloffen

2015 ändere ich auch den Namen FindFind.it, um etwas leichter Schreib- und Merkbares zu haben – aber so richtig gefallen wird mir der nie.

Rückblickend war da viel Shiny-Object-Syndrome und leider weniger Nutzer-Kommunikation: So manche Umstellung stößt manche vor den Kopf, Nutzerzahlen stagnieren, und erst später gewöhne ich mir an, auf Anfragen schnell zu reagieren.

Und es kommt auch ein Verantwortungsgefühl auf: Für viele Nutzer, so berichten sie mir, wird es zur essentiellen Browserkonfiguration: Ohne Serchilo können sie das Internet nicht mehr bedienen. Insofern kommt Abschalten für mich nie in Frage, die Quelloffenlegung ist auch damit motiviert, dass es ohne mich überleben kann.

Eine Umstellung muss es dann aber doch geben: Dass alle Suchanfragen aller Nutzer über meinen Server gehen – das finde ich sicherheitstechnisch irgendwann nicht mehr akzeptabel. Spannenderweise erfahre ich 2018 davon, dass man Parameter an eine URL auch hinter dem Hash senden kann (example.com/#query=Suche) – und diese nur lokal verarbeitet werden. Und so entsteht die Idee zum heutigen trovu.net, um das es im nächsten und letzten Artikel gehen soll.

What is Tumblr ?

Okay so I just wanted to begin by saying thank you so much for asking this! I love talking about Clay, and this song fits really well for him. Also I totally didn't ramble to my friends about this super excitedly before typing out the actual post dhjdjd 🦁🎸

In the stead of the song I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, I actually do not think this song would be a good fit.

One big factor is that it would make little sense for the up-beat hype musical of Out of This World to end on such a dour tone, especially since it's supposed to be a happy ending. Not only this, but the song presented also refers to Clays struggle in isolation, which the audience would have no way of knowing.

Additionally, the lyrics of the song being about emotional and mental health is a bit unfitting for the plot of the planet of despair, since the space explorer is more trapped by a lack of transportation or something of the sort.

I believe it's also worth noting that the play was a huge hit, both starting out and end the first performance, because of Clay Calloway. That is to say that his return being advertised was a important part of piqueing the interest in the audience, and so it makes debatebly more sense for a song by U2 to be used (even if it's not I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For). (For context, every U2 song in the movie is canonically written by Clay Calloway)

I do however want to say that this song is a really good song to use for Clay Calloway, just not a good replacement for anything. It maybe could replace You've Got to Get Yourself Together, but again, it's important that it's a song written by Clay, plus it's important that the song is written in second person POV.

The reason it's important this song is written by Clay is because Ruby was his muse, so hearing a song he made for Ruby to feel better sung the same way to him, and so that's a huge emotional push for him.

Anyways this song you gave me is actually a really good song for Clay. It details someone's hopeless and unwillingness to move on, and instead surrendering. They Plus, the voice is close to Clay's, so that's another fun touch!

(Definitely being added to my Clay Playlisy by the way)

Why Raven Cares.

I don’t think it gets said enough, and this doesn’t excuse Raven’s actions what so ever, of course.

But I do think Raven does care quite a bit, even if she won’t admit to anyone.

I think we’ll start with the statement that she wants to kill Qrow, which I still can’t find to be true. What have we seen that would warrant so much hate for a family member? She stills checks up on Qrow, reason unknown. But you don’t just check up on people you don’t care about. They same can be said for her checking up on Tai and Yang.

I think Raven just suppresses a lot of her emotions. She wants to be viewed as strong, and showing emotions in her mind is a weakness. Caring for others is a weakness, which is why she keeps this part of her hidden. Semblances are supposed to be an extension of you, and Raven’s semblance is virtually useless without having people she cares about, as you need that connection with them. 

Down in the vault at Haven, she didn’t put Vernal there to save herself. She just didn’t see the danger she was putting Vernal in. She thought she would be able to attack and Vernal would end up being fine, she can protect herself. Raven had no way of knowing that Cinder was going to try to take the maiden power from Vernal. 

Also, we know Raven didn’t want Salem to get the relic Clearly, she was going to try to stop Cinder so she could either leave it, or take it for herself. Well, shown later on, she does open the vault. So she did want it for herself. But the point here is, she didn’t want Salem to have it. 

Then Yang and Raven’s conversation in the vault. That was the one time she really showed any sort of strong emotion that wasn’t anger or hate. She to an extent regrets what she did. She yelled at Yang because she didn’t know how to react otherwise. No one in a long time has talked to her like that, but with the intention to help. She understands where Yang was coming from, and that is definitely shown as she lets Yang take the relic. In my opinion, I don’t think she wanted to put her daughter in inherent danger, but more so she knew that she could deal with it a lot better than she could. Then of course, she ran again. But she had a lot on her mind. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her, not even close to it.

Also quickly, jumping back a little bit, her comment to Ruby about sounding just like her mother. This was clearly said with distaste. I think Raven is the type of character to have misplaces Anger as we’ve seen. I would almost bet she is angry at Summer for running off and dying. Now of course, we don’t really have enough information to really come to a conclusion on this, but I think it’s a fair assumption. Because, Raven did used to care about STRQ. About her brother. I mean, we know Raven leaving did something to Qrow, and if they didn’t care about each other at one point in time, that wouldn’t have happened. In the STRQ photo she was smiling, and why would Tai marry and have a kid with someone if she didn’t care about him? I think Raven just has a very poor time handling her emotions.

We also have Raven saving Yang in V2, and later on it was said that Raven said she would save Yang once and that was it. She wouldn’t save someone she doesn’t care about. She wouldn’t even consider stepping in anytime. Also later on when Yang breaks into the Branwen camp. First thing is, after learning Weiss is Yang’s teammate, she lets Weiss go. This shows that 1. She doesn’t want Yang to be unhappy with her and 2. She cares about Yang’s wellbeing.

Anyways the come into the tent and Raven offers them... tea? (Am I just imagining things on this one). And explains everything to them. Tries to convince Yang to stay with the tribe. You don’t just 1. Give a rundown on how the world works to someone you don’t care about and 2. Try to get them to stay. But clearly she respects Yang’s decision well enough to let them go, to even let them use her portal to get to Qrow.

Oh and because I forgot to add this in. I think maybe part of this, and we even see this somewhat with Qrow, is that they grew up in a bandit tribe. I feel if you grew up in an environment like that, as Raven says, the Strong live and the weak die. Don’t show emotions so you aren’t viewed as week, that is probably a lot of what they had to do growing up. Qrow just came to terms with how it isn’t supposed to be that way more so than Raven.

Anyways, through all of this I do think Raven cares about STRQ/Yang. I would almost extend that branch to Ruby too, oh and Vernal. This doesn’t excuse her actions at all, just I think more puts into perspective of why she made these choices. I hope when we end up seeing her again, she has thought over what Yang said, and hopefully can recognize these things! Holding out for a Raven redemption arc over here :)

For some of them the meshes just mess up and go really weird. Like, hair stretching all over the screen kind of weird. This happened with Louis’ dreads, Ruby’s hair, Omar’s hair, Violet’s hair (though I found a scene where it didn’t happen so bad?), and Clementine ponytail. I don’t really know what is causing this and whether it’s due to certain hair types just not being compatible with another character, or if some are more finicky and I did something wrong.

so, Beto O’Rourke said that he has talked to cops wrt rifles like AKs and ARs, two common “assault weapons”, and said that they are afraid of them, that they do not want to be facing them. the right, at least, some parts of it, have seized upon that remark (understandably so, given the easiest reading of it) as being the exact point of the 2nd Amendment and evidence that Dems are looking to establish a police state and want to disarm them because they pose a genuine threat to cops.

and the thing is, if someone wants to shoot a cop? an AK or an AR is a good way to do it, all things considered!! 5.56x45 has a lot of shit talked about it but is a round with a pretty good amount of energy and low recoil in a long enough barrel and has a wound profile that will really ruin your day, regardless of if you are wearing armor or not. even the highest-rated body armor will only do so much against 5.56, and that’s not even what you would find an average cop wearing a vest for, and a cop will most of the time only be wearing a vest at best so torso, pelvic area, sides, arms, legs, head? all unprotected, and what armor they do have is going to stop 5.56 only if theyre lucky.

and 7.62x39? that round is not perfect, but it hits real hard, it can get through body armor, it’ll fuck up a car if need be. GIGN, a well-known French “counterterror” unit, has procured CZ BREN rifles chambered in 7.62x39, specifically because of the ballistics of such a round are good enough to warrant purchasing an entirely new weapon system, albeit one with a form factor relatively close to most other Western European/American designs. The Sig MCX, an AR-pattern rifle, has shown up in at least one police armory with a stock design intended to go on the shoulder while the shooter has a riot helmet with the mask lowered, chambered in 7.62x39. It’s a good round, and while there are reasons that a customer looking for new rifles would go American or Czech over Russian or Bulgarian or Polish or whatever, a Yugo AK or an SKS or any other rifle shooting it is going to fuck shit up.

the features that make an “assault weapon” what it is are not simply the round it fires: the Mini-14, M14/M1A, and SKS are great demonstrations of this principle, as are things like Saiga or Vepr or other AK-pattern rifles that had thumbhole/“sporter”/Dragunov-esque stocks for import reasons which are still capable of fucking your day up. there are rifles popular in states like NY, CA, and so on which have similar ballistics while not having the same features that would make them “assault weapons” while there are also weapons with weaker ballistics than the ones Beto is evoking that look more or less the same, like AR-pattern rifles in .22 LR.

Also, just generally the whole thing with AR and AK rifles is that there are a lot of them. They are incredibly common, ARs especially, and most will never be pointed at a person. the share of gun ownership in this country is relatively small in a lot of places, and includes a lot of people who own a whole lot of guns just because they have the money to and they enjoy having guns. overwhelmingly, this leads to gun culture being white and rich and full of “law-abiding citizens” who are fucking fascists in ideological position, but who are on the good side of law enforcement, on the good side of most conventional standards of citizenship, and as a result are given a pass for the most part. And theyre the ones who run gun stores, start gun companies, who manufacture more and more of these ARs every day for their other well-off gun-loving friends.

So, there are a lot of guns out there that fit the square peg into the round hole of what Beto is trying to get at, and if aimed at a cop they can indeed kill said cop. i know that, the people who own these guns know that, and while some of them are owned by people involved in crimes like dealing drugs or other things that are going to get them in trouble with the cops, the thing is? a lot of these guns are owned by the right-wing, who notably pointed out that the idea of a cop being scared of a gun being pointed at them for imposing unjust rule is something that appeals to them.

However, it carries a very...Ruby Ridge feeling, if you will. Fuck the FBI, fuck the Marshals, but damn if it isn’t a bad taste in your mouth when you have to say that while talking about a white supremacist. The militarized, oppressive, awful cops that are talked about by “right-anarchists” on here are ones that act on behalf of their own fascist desires, are the ones who enforce the War on Drugs, who are disappearing refugees at the border, who are killing black activists in the South, who are responsible for protecting the careers of cops that kill. The same is true of Veterans who join the “intelligence community” and end up in the CIA or as Private Military Contractors doing the dirty work of the US that is a bit too boring, distasteful, or too bad of a look for even the US Military to be doing. They’re the ones who want to topple Maduro and who think the sanctions and politicization of aid are justified, who joke about Pinochet’s helicopter rides, who call things “based” and post memes about Israel while being raging antisemites and ALSO raging islamophobes. theyre the ones driving a lot of public discourses about pedophilia away from, say, the Catholic Church and toward “billionaire satanists” that they will or will not name as Jewish depending on the approach you come at them with. Theyre the ones who talk about “black-on-black” crime while ignoring that the guns involved in most crimes are entirely legally manufactured and were then either sold illegally or stolen in a break-in, who are collectively talking about the spectre of black-on-white crime while ignoring that across just about every sort of crime both people involved usually share the same skin color. 

you know, FASCISTS.

Beto gave them an incredibly juicy talking point on gun violence, and they get to use it to superficially stand against police while they also lick those very same boots, talk about Blue Lives Mattering, when if they really want to be as edgy and cool and revolutionary as they say, they’d probably try to start running some of the guns they buy or something.
