Yeah, the rescue/escape from Xizor's "castle" (why in gods name are we calling things castles?) is pretty well done, if with moments that are cinematic in a not-good way. (Mostly Guri randomly wanting to fight Luke, though the droids flying the Falcon is a little overly silly.)

After that, it's back downhill. Partly because people have started teleporting again (I hate that) and partly because the protagonists have ridiculous amounts of plot armor so they can survive Xizor ridiculously having his own navy. Because of course he does.

And then, in the end, its Vader who saves them and destroys Xizor. Which feels more like a cheat than it should. (Though it's written such that Xizor could have escaped. Maybe that's what irritates me about it.)

And then, in the end, we're ready for the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Which would be fine if the book were better.

Moral of the story: when you write a book, the things in it should make sense. This book violates that repeatedly. We don't even ever get an explanation of why Boba Fett didn't go straight to Jabba's palace. People just...do stuff. So there can be a plot. And somehow almost all of the bits that tie into the movies undercut them somehow.

All in, a disappointing read. And one that didn't even answer what Dash Rendar would be like in the hands of another writer since he was barely in the book even when he was in the book.

In the hands of another writer, he's a complete nonentity?

glenny? i don’t hate it but i don’t love it. he was a frequent scratch but when he played he could do some amazing things and he’s one of the few that is killer at face offs. he’s such a kind person and i’ve loved watching him but i know when guri was trsded in march he was doing sm better with the habs (however they haven’t signed him and he’d a free agent rn) so hopefully glenny can really succeed there! sometimes all a player needs are some teammates they have better chemistry with

【雑誌 casa brutus】猫と家。（2022年6月）

i recently bought a couple magazines from the philadelphia-based shop omoi zakka, and one of them was this issue of the japanese lifestyle magazine casa brutus! i had never heard of it before, but i was instantly drawn to this issue by...well...you can probably guess. i’m a cat person living in a nation of dog people ^^;

anyway, this issue was focused on 「猫と快適に暮らすためのアイデア」 (“ideas for living pleasantly together with your cat”), which included anything from major home renovation to making scratchy toys out of old hand weights. my favorite part of the issue was the “cat data” graphics shown on a lot of the pages, which pointed to all the cats in the photos and detailed their names, ages, breeds, and “skills.” they were all really cute, so i thought i’d share some of my favorites!!

The Monk Sava the Sanctified (532)

     The Monk Sava the Sanctified was born in the V Century at Cappadocia of pious Christian parents, named John and Sophia. His father was a military-commander. Journeying off to Alexandria on service related matters, his wife went with him, but their five year old son they left in the care of an uncle. When the boy reached eight years of age, he entered the monastery of Saint Flavian situated nearby. The gifted child quickly learned to read and became well studied in Holy Scripture. And in vain then did his parents urge Saint Sava to return to the world and enter into marriage.      At 17 years of age he accepted monastic tonsure and so prospered in fasting and prayer, that he was bestown the gift of wonderworking. Having spent ten years at the monastery of Saint Flavian, the monk set off to Jerusalem, and from there to the monastery of the Monk Euthymios the Great (Comm. 20 January). But the Monk Euthymios sent off Saint Sava to abba Theoktistos, the head of a nearby monastery with a strict common-life monastic rule. The Monk Sava dwelt at this monastery as an obedient until age 30.      After the death of the monastic-elder Theoktistos, his successor gave blessing to the Monk Sava to seclude himself within a cave: on Saturdays however the monk left his hermitage and came to the monastery, where he participated in Divine-services and partook of food. And after a certain while they gave permission to the monk not to leave his hermitage at all, and Saint Sava asceticised within the cave over the course of 5 years.      The Monk Euthymios attentively oversaw the life of the young monk, and seeing how he had matured spiritually, he began to take him along with him to the Ruv wilderness (at the Dead Sea).They went out on 14 January and remained there until Palm Sunday. The Monk Euthymios called Saint Sava a child-elder and took care to encourage in him growth in the utmost monastic virtues.

     When the Monk Euthymios expired to the Lord (+ 473), Saint Sava withdrew from the Laura-monastery and resettled in a cave near the monastery of the Monk Gerasimos of Jordan (+ 475, Comm. 4 March). After several years disciples began to gather to the Monk Sava – all searching for monastic life. There thus arose the Great Laura-monastery. Through a command from above (in a pillar of fire) the monks built a church in the cave.      The Monk Sava founded several more monasteries. Many a miracle was manifest through the prayers of the Monk Sava: amidst the Laura spouted forth a spring of water, during a time of drought it rained in abundance, and there likewise occurred healings of the sick and the demoniac. The Monk Sava composed the first monastic-rule of church services, the so-called "Jerusalem Rule", accepted by all the Palestine monasteries. The saint reposed peacefully to God in the year 532.

Saint Guria, Archbishop of Kazan

     Saint Guri, Archbishop of Kazan, (in the world named Grigorii Grigor'evich Rugotin), was the first archbishop of the Kazan diocese, established in 1555. He was born in the town of Radonezh outside Moscow into the family of a courtier. His parents were not wealthy, and so from his early years he had to serve prince Ivan Pen'kov as steward of his estates. From the time of his youth, Grigori was pious, humble and gentle. He did not wish to enter into marriage. But slandered before the prince of improprieties with his wife, Grigori was locked up in an underground dungeon. This undermined his health, but it also intensified and deepened his religious sensitivity. In prison, the prisoner wrote a small booklet for teaching children to read and write. The proceeds from his alphabet-book he gave off to the needy.      Released from prison, Grigori accepted tonsure with the name Gurii at the Iosifo-Volokolamsk monastery, known for its strict monastic rule. In 1543 he was chosen by the brethren as hegumen of this monastery and he administered it for almost 9 years, and then he resigned as hegumen and lived for two years as a simple monk. Before becoming bishop, Saint Guri for one year directed the Trinity Selizharov monastery in Tver diocese. He was chosen by lot to the Kazan cathedra-seat. Assisted by Saint Varsonophi (+ 1576, Comm. 11 April)Saint Gurii collaborated much in missionary activity. In his eight years as bishop there, four monasteries were organised, and the Blagoveschensk-Annunciation cathedral church  and ten more city churches were built.

     In 1561 the saint fell grievously ill. On feastdays they carried him into the church, and here he either sat or lay, not having the strength to walk or even stand. Shortly before his death (+ 5 December 1563)he accepted the great schema under Saint Varsonophii, and he was buried in the Spaso-Preobrazhensk (Saviour Transfiguration) monastery. On 4 October 1595, the incorrupt relics of Sainted-hierarchs Gurii and Varsonophii were uncovered. The Kazan metropolitan, Sainted Ermogen (the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', + 1613, Comm 12 May), was present at this uncovering of relics, and he described this event in the lives of these saints. On 20 June 1613, the relics of Sainted Gurii were transferred from the Saviour-Transfiguration monastery to the Annunciation cathedral church. At present the relics rest at a cemetery church named for the holy Nobleborn Princes Theodore (Feodor) of Muromsk and his sons David and Konstantin, situated in the city of Kazan.

Shang-Chi e a Lenda dos Dez Anéis (2021)

Você é fã do Mestre do Kung-fu?

Qual deles? É, bem… só na China tem, um monte, né? Vou acertar, então. Você gostou de Shang-Chi e a Lenda dos Dez Anéis? Ainda não assistiu? Corre atrás que o filme do Mestre do Kung-fu que vale… vale. Vamos combinar que esse não é exatamente o personagem criado em 1972 por Steve Englehart e Jim Starlin. Esse Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) não é filho do Fu-Manchu, mas de um Mandarim que não é o Mandarim dos quadrinhos, o Wenwu (Tony Leung).

Como a Disney tem pavor do cancelamento, trocou um pacote de estereótipos por outros, mas que são socialmente aceitos em 2021. Vamos combinar que Shang-Chi e a Lenda dos Dez Anéis é uma mistura de qualquer filme do Jack Chan com Raya e o Último Dragão ou Mulan. Sabe aquela pizza meio calabresa, meio muçarela e meio Aliche? No filme, assim como nos quadrinhos, Shang-Chi é enviado para matar um inimigo do seu pai, nesse caso, o assassino de sua mãe Jiang Li (Fala Chen). Seguindo o molde dos quadrinhos, ele abandonou o pai, que deu uma de Amish e respeitou o Rumspringa do guri. Nessa fase, ele conheceu Katy Bashir (Awkwafina) e ganhou uma amiga doidinha que topa qualquer aventura.

E assim se passaram dez anos (ou mais)…

A paz do moçoilo é interrompida por um cartão-postal da irmã  Xialing (Meng'er Zhang) que acaba virando o seu chamado para a aventura, uma vez que isso o leva para um clube da luta em Macau, prum confronto com o grupo Dez anéis e com seu próprio pai e terminou na cidade fantástica de onde sua mãe veio. Conforme o filme vai seguindo você vai se perguntando: Ainda falta algum clichê de filme chinês? É interessante ver como o filme praticamente pega os conceitos dos quadrinhos, joga no lixo e inventa coisas completamente novas, mantendo apenas os nomes originais. Um exemplo são os próprios dez anéis, que na verdade, são argolas “mágicas” que ficam no braço de seu usuário, bem diferente dos anéis científicos dos quadrinhos. Até que faz muito sentido dentro do universo criado pra esse filme. Na verdade, o filme parece uma daquelas redações tema livre sobre algum assunto que dão muito certo porque a criatividade do aluno extrapola os conceitos do assunto.

David Callaham (Mortal Kombat) e Destin Daniel Cretton (Luta por Justiça) até deram umas derrapadas como dar um peso desnecessário para a personagem de Awkwafina, que cresce bastante ao longo do filme e o personagem que era um alívio cômico, meio que vira a Sidekick do Mestre do Kung-fu. Outro erro é o dragão que surge do nada. Em momento algum ele é anunciado, mas precisa ter um porque na China tem lendas sobre dragões. É um convidado surpresa que ganha protagonismo a partir do terceiro ato. Outro personagem que ganha importância nesse ato é Jiang Nan (Michelle Yeoh), tia De Shang-Chi e  Xialing, que acaba servindo de mentora para os sobrinhos e sua amiga sem noção.

Um filme de ação e fantasia:

Ao que parece, na fase 4, a Marvel quer que cada um de seus filmes/séries tenha uma identidade própria. Shang-Chi e a Lenda dos Dez Anéis não é um filme de super-heróis, é o que acontece quando um filme de luta e um filme de fantasia chinês saem pra passear. A coreografia das cenas de luta parece decalcada dos filmes que o Jackie Chan fez nos anos 80/90. O filme tem até seu momento Velocidade Máxima antes de virar o irmão bastardo de O Tigre e o Dragão ou de A Grande Muralha.

E os dois momentos funcionam muito bem.

Ao colocar o Wenwu como vilão, o filme ainda apela praquele esquema meio Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker, que funciona demais no filme. Sim, temos um feudo familiar. Na verdade, mais de um porque de certa forma, em algum momento do filme, todos enfrentam todos. Shang-Chi, que começa o filme apanhando da irmã, termina lutando ao lado dela contra o pai. E Wenwu, como todo vilão da Disney do novo milênio, nem é tão mal. Como ele ouve ouve a voz da esposa morta e tenta salvá-la, seus desvios de caráter acabam sendo “perdoados”. Shang-Chi e a Lenda dos Dez Anéis não é um filme de super-heróis nem é o personagem que os leitores de quadrinhos cresceram lendo, mas ainda assim, somos lembrados em mais de um momento que ele não só existe dentro do MCU como é uma consequência direta dos eventos de Homem de ferro 3.

1. How many are you happy with?

I like them all!  I don’t usually angst too much over titles.  I suppose I could have been more original with a few, like the Fictober Drabbles one, but it was more to put all the tumblr posts in one place than anything else…

2. How many are...not great?

Well, I think Anamnesis might turn some people off since it’s an obscure word, but I like it.  The Five Times fic title is pretty boring but the whole point was to write a Five Times fic, so that’s sort of to be expected, right? 😊

3. How many did you scramble for at the last minute?

Physical Graffiti was last minute, it was titled “Sabine/Luke” up until posting.  Anamnesis was sort of by nature titled at the end, as the whole fic was written in one three-ish hour sprint, so that title came after it was done as well.

4. How many did you know before you started writing/creating, or near the beginning?

Common Thread, Catalysts, Five Times Luke Skywalker Surprised Ahsoka and One Time She Surprised Him, and Fan Mail

5. How many are quotes from songs or poems?

None!  

6. How many are other quotes?

None!  Dang I’m boring huh?

7. Which best reflects the plot of the story/content of the fanwork?

Well, I would hope that most of them do? Hahaha this is making me feel very uninteresting about how I title, but I try to convey some sense of content or tone with the titles…Physical Graffiti involves edible body paint, Creativity is my Luke MacGyver homage, Everything to Lose is before Vanto goes off to join the Chiss, Proxy is Ventress using Luke as a…proxy, The Problem with Prophecy is exactly that…oracles, etc., Comfortable is Old Married Skywalkers™, Anomaly is droid POV, The Politics of Gifting is a secret Santa type thing, Anamnesis centers around memory, Uneasy Alliance is basically a remix of Thrawn: Alliances, Impetuous is Pryce being inadvisably bold, 31 Days and Five Times and the Ode are super explanatory, The Art of Disguise is about costumes/makeup, and Fan Mail is about Luke’s fan club.

Perhaps Common Thread, Conflicting Aesthetics, Corporeal, and Catalysts don’t do such a great job of explaining plot or content, especially the holiday/Life Day nature of the latter.

8. Which best reflects the theme of the story?

I guess at tie between The Problem with Prophecy or The Politics of Gifting, as both of them sort of encapsulate the fic premise.  But Comfortable would also be up there, as the theme is the comfort and familiarity you gain through a long-term relationship.

9. Which best reflects the character voice of the story/POV of the fanwork?

Anomaly is a fave because it’s Guri/Luke and hopefully reflects that droid POV. 

10. Which is your favorite title?

Probably Common Thread.  It started as a few kiss/dialogue ficlet prompts with @jadedjo and I didn’t expect it to become what it became.  I like how that title continues to tie the fic together—it’s sort of serendipity that it started with a C too, because that was begun before I consciously titled all my Luke/Mara stuff with a C at the beginning. I hope to continue it before too long—when I have fic time again!!!

For that ask meme you just posted, you know I have to ask you for Star Wars.

The first character I first fell in love with: Darth Vader. (i mean he had the Look & the Spooky Voice & the Power/Confidence and maaaybe painfully shy 8 y/o me wanted to be a little like that when i was older lol.)The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: C-3P0. i didn’t like him as a kid (i thought he needed to c h i l l  o u t) but then i went and grew up to be C-3P0 so i can relate. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: oh jeez i don’t interact with enough people in the fandom to know who’s liked/disliked. i’m not a huge fan of Tarkin, i guess. i don’t dislike him though. no strong feelings one way or the other. The character I love that everyone else hates: (same as above ;_; ) i don’t think there are any?? everyone i love seem to be loved by most people??? and the ones i’d pick are not so much hated as they are just kinda obscure. like Guri or Zuckuss. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: there are none!! if they had my heart in the beginning then they still have it now!!The character I would totally smooch: all of them Leia. The character I’d want to be like: Luke, because he’s a genuinely good dude and stays true to himself and his friends no matter what (and if I could just dig through the cynical core in my heart i too could be like that). The character I’d slap: C’baoth can dial me at 1-800-CATCH-HANDS!! A pairing that I love: Thrawn/Pellaeon all time best pairing, hands down. A pairing that I despise: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. i don’t despise it but i will never give it a chance.
