My Top 10 Favourite Anime With <7.00 On MAL

So I watched a Digibro rant vid where he was asked like his 3x3 for shows with less than 7 on MAL. 3x3s take more effort to make than top 10 lists even though there’s one less show so I’m doing it this way. I tried my best to avoid like weird adverts or music videos with low ratings and shit, the following is the best I could come up with. Yes this is my most arbitrary list ever. For clarification the <7.00 refers to the individual show’s average score on MAL, not my own personal score.

10. Mahou no LumiTear

Unfortunately we do need to start extremely niche, in fact I have like double the followers that this show has people with it on their list, and half of those people have it on their plan to watch. This is an ONA intended to advertise like, candy for little Japanese girls or something? But it uses very cutesy pastel mahou shoujo aesthetic and while I didn’t understand any of it since nobody’s ever bothered to sub this, I had fun the entire time I watched it. Also in some episodes they change outfits but retain the magical girl aesthetic so they’re like winter magical girls or something and I loved it.

9. Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel

So this thing’s actually like, been adapted into like 3 different TV anime or something idk, but I’ve only seen the 2 OVA episodes, and that’s what this is. It’s uh, basically Sailor Moon, but there are like 2 magical girls and they’re both kind of equally important, ish, the red one’s a bit more important, and they fight a surprising amount of normal crime. Like my favourite thing in the whole OVA is actually how it opens, it’s kinda just the 2 magical girls taking on a regular ass crime organisation with like, suits and guns and goons and loots. It’s pretty fun though, uhm, not really a lot to say about it other than it’s nice.

8. Mahou Shoujo Ore

I should probably just say right now, more than half of this list is  just magical girl stuff. This is a proper magical girl TV anime in which our MCs turn into huge magical buff dude idol girls, and it’s actually pretty consistently funny from start to end with a surprisingly sweet ending as well. Character designs are nice too. Good time.

7. Sounan Desu Ka?

Hey our first non-magical girl show! This show’s fun, cute girls do deserted island survival, generally pretty funny and with ½ length episodes it doesn’t really get tiring, good time. I like, covered this show in my Season in Review like 8 weeks ago or something, read that if you want more.

6. Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!

Okay so this show is currently airing and sitting just barely below a 7, but it was above it for a little bit earlier in the season, so this entry on the list is really volatile, but as of right now it’s below a 7 so it qualifies. Cute girls do isekai, one’s OP and isekai’d whereas the others are actually from this world. The quality’s been mixed so far but the show’s really funny at its best and I love the character designs, Mile especially. Kinda cautious on where it’s going but I mean, I’ve liked it for the most part so far.

5. Pop in Q

This is a magical idol movie in which like 6 girls get isekai’d to a world they need to save via song and dance and if they don’t time is gonna be fucked up forever, and it’s got nice visuals, a banging soundtrack, I think the character designs when everyone gets their proper outfits are super great, and most of the girls have a satisfying, if extremely basic, arc. Also, Tomoyo Kurosawa’s in it and gives an expectedly spectacular performance that like, honestly elevates the whole product up a tier. It is just the one movie so I recommend you check it out if you’ve got like 90 minutes to kill.

4. Mahou Shoujo Site

This is easily the worst anime on this entire list but it’s so fucking funny all the time because of how tryhard edgy bullshit it always wants to be, I wouldn’t describe myself as someone who likes things ironically or has guilty pleasures but like, this is that to the max.

3. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid

Okay so I completely get why this show’s rating is below 7, it’s really not a Nanoha project, but like, I love it so much. It’s just maximum cuteness and completely devoid of conflict literally all the time, except physical conflict, and I gotta say I love watching lolis beat the shit out of each other. Easily my favourite A-1 Pictures show. Wish it got more credit tbh, it’s not really a Nanoha product so if they’d gone the ViVid Strike route and cut Nanoha from the title altogether I think it’d be better received.

2. Re:Stage Dream Days

This show is almost certainly gonna be in my top 5 anime of the year, it’s so funny all the time, the girls are adorable, I like the music, I don’t know how much of this show’s humour is intentional because it’s evidently trying to be a comedy, but I don’t know if I’m laughing at it or with it, but I enjoy it a lot anyway, I really don’t think it’s ironic enjoyment because this show genuinely does a lot of stuff really well, great time, love it, also just wrote about this in my last Season in Review so go read that.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog OVA

Okay hold on what the absolute fuck!? Why does this have below 7? This OVA kicks so much fucking ass! The visuals are amazing, the animation is such a fucking delight and like this specific character design for Sonic and friends is like the best in the entire series. Also that soundtrack, oh my fucking god that soundtrack. Sonic games are famous for great music and by god does this anime adaptation deliver on that promise as well. I love the way this OVA like, conveys the fun of the Sonic series, honestly the scene that’s just Sonic and Tails running through the Land of Darkness is amazing, it’s just a visual delight that really sells you on the joy of rolling around at the speed of sound. Also the fuckin, comedy’s great! Yeah Sarah’s annoying and some of the more generic anime comedy with her’s kinda lame, but like “SHUT UP, TAILS!”, Sonic jumping on Knuckles’ head and shit, everything about Knuckles in fact, especially his hat. Also yeah I’ve only seen this dubbed and I’m proud to admit I like the dub voices! They’re absolutely not what I want a modern Sonic cast to sound like but I think they go weirdly well with the classic characters, and they’re fuckin, miles better than what Jaleel White and that squad were up to (actually Eggman’s AoStH voice is pretty good). And just fuckin, Planet Freedom is so cool, the backgrounds in this are so fucking pretty and Sonic and Tails just living in this deserted plane is awesome as shit. I am speaking 100% from nostalgia and Sonic fan bias here but this OVA is fucking incredible.
