🐶 Wuffige Grüße aus meinem Zweit-Zuhause am Wasser, Wald & Wiesen!
Euer Boris 💕

Maniac Cop (1988)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Maniac Cop really could’ve been something but as-is, it disappoints. Even if you only want a slasher movie with a unique killer, it’s a letdown. The problem is that it’s not trashy enough to be dumb fun or good enough to live up to its potential.
In New York City, a man dressed in a police uniform has been patrolling the streets at night, murdering innocent people. The initial panic subsides when Officer Jack W. Forrest Jr. (Bruce Campbell) is arrested but Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) thinks he's been framed. McCrae reaches out to Jack’s lover, Officer Theresa Mallory (Laurene Landon), to clear his name and find the killer’s true identity.
I was talking to a co-worker about Maniac Cop and when I told her the film was about a serial killer dressed in police uniform, she jokingly said, “Oh, you mean, like a regular cop?” She was joking but it's a sentiment the picture fails to satisfyingly address. Even before George Floyd's murder, many people would not have found this premise shocking. The film briefly shows news reports of people who’ve never trusted uniformed men and women because they’ve seen them abuse their power but it’s a brief scene that doesn’t mean anything in the end. It's not like the audience or protagonists have their faith in the system shaken because the Maniac Cop is just a "bad apple". All of the protagonists live within the police system and none would be typical victims of police harassment even if they weren't.
So if it’s not going to comment on police corruption and violence, can Maniac Cop be trashy fun as it does what The Dentist did to dentists, or Silent Night, Deadly Night did to mall Santas? No. It makes you think it is, but then doesn’t. The kills are boring and more often than not, off-screen. The slasher is mute so there are no ironic twists on Miranda rights and director William Lustig doesn’t go through all of the possible ways you could fatally use police icons, for instance. The worst part is that the movie can’t seem to make up its mind about what kind of slasher it features. The first time Officer Mallory encounters the Maniac Cop, she riddles him with bullets, even saying she shot him twice in the head. That’s fatal for most zombies so there’s no way the killer could be anything but supernatural. He isn’t. It fares a bit better as a mystery detective thriller film, but when we find out who is donning the uniform and going around butchering civilians, it’s not a shocking reveal. You'll just say "Ok…".
Written and produced by Larry Cohen, there are several points where it feels like the story was hastily tweaked. The Maniac Cop kills his first victim by snapping their neck but when police officers inspect the body, one of them can barely hold down his lunch. He must be very sensitive to act as if he’s looking at one of Jigsaw’s victims. On top of being immune to bullets, the Maniac Cop is super strong and described as deathly cold. Again, it feels like he should be a Jason Voorhees, zombie-like killer. He isn’t. Towards the conclusion, Officer Jack and Theresa (at this point, Tom Atkins’ character has been unceremoniously written out of the film, another baffling decision) are worried the killer will use the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade to his advantage. When I heard this, I got excited. This film is not great… but neither are Leprechaun, most of the Friday the 13th movies and 2006’s Black Christmas. Despite this, I’ve seen all those films multiple times as part of a holiday/calendar day tradition. I thought Maniac Cop might be something you watch every March 17th… but the reference to the holiday could’ve been edited out of the film completely.
The most frustrating aspect of Maniac Cop is that you can see what the film could’ve been. It's in the title. Maybe they’re coming back from the grave to avenge their death after being framed by corrupt officials they were going to expose - a slasher you can cheer for. Maybe they were corrupt and now that they’ve returned wrong. “Protect and Serve” becomes “Punish and Sever”. They ONLY go after innocents or hand out absurd sentences. Jaywalking? That gets you the death penalty. With likable protagonists, interesting kills and good special effects mixed in with tension and scares, you’d satisfy the audience. The problem is that no one will remake Maniac Cop. You might argue that it was in poor taste back then, but it would be in doubly so taste now and nobody likes this movie enough to say “Damn whatever controversy might come up, I’m doing this!”. Despite everything, I was entertained by the film. I wanted to see where it was going, which does make me interested in the two sequels, which will (hopefully) be the movie Maniac Cop should’ve been. Untangled

She sees his pain; he ignites her passion. Reese lives as a modern Rapunzel in her father's L.A. skyscraper, hiding her ability to see trauma through eye contact. When she finally escapes to a corporate job, she discovers she's working for billionaire CEO Leo Sorenson—her father's sworn enemy. The office rumor mill churns: why would gorgeous, powerful Leo hire someone inexperienced? But Leo sees her brilliance could save his neck from the board's chopping block. But as they work late nights preparing for a make-or-break event, professional boundaries blur into irresistible attraction. Then Reese learns the truth—her father planted her as a corporate spy, expecting her to help destroy Leo's empire. While the high-pressure event unearths Leo's past trauma and threatens to shatter his carefully constructed image, Reese must choose: betray the billionaire whose touch sets her body aflame or defy her father whose controlling love has always kept her safe.
Worth Melting For

Lana sees probabilities—except she never saw her husband stealing their money before walking out on her. Broke and bitter, she reluctantly accepts her cruel father's offer: legally represent his crooked billion dollar corporation in exchange for financial salvation. Enter opposing counsel Shawna, the eternally optimistic attorney whose bright smile hides a brilliant legal mind. She's never met anyone as fascinating—or frustrating—as ice queen Lana. For the first time, Lana's probability-seeing ability fails to calculate for the impossibly bright woman sitting across from her. Shawna's unpredictability both terrifies and fascinates Lana as each meeting melts her carefully constructed walls, exposing their electric chemistry, but dating the opposing counsel could cost them everything—their careers, reputations, and the case against Lana's manipulative ex. With her freedom hanging in the balance, can Lana trust the one person whose future she can't predict? Or will their forbidden romance become her final miscalculation?

[PITCH]
American Style Vigilantes
What is it —
An adult animated action series that instead of being a comedy is rather a drama with an element of humor, a dramedy that isn't afraid to treat itself seriously and have fun with itself as well.
PREMISE:
Set in at first South Central Los Angeles, California, we follow two brothers each struggling in their lives after different personal events left them alone on their own, William and Keith Shiherlis, who grow increasingly disillusioned with everything around them and what they see in America when they realize that making the right choice is what led them into this predicament.
It's then that after they kill two crooked cops in a violent scuffle and survive a near-death experience, the brothers believe that they now have a new calling in life with this second chance and decide to become vigilantes, doing what the police and others fail to do and make the world a better place.
In doing this, they immediately come into conflict with turf wars threatening to boil over, ruthless and ambitious mob bosses, assassins, bounty hunters and an FBI agent who thinks he can use the two of them to his advantage all the while it seeps into their fallen personal lives and now in the ultimate test must protect everything and everyone they love with all they got.
NOTES/TRIVIA/DETAILS:
• For the roles of the Shiherlis Brothers, I don't think I can picture anyone else voicing them than Michael Jai White and Dennis Haysbert. In a way it does subvert the viewer's expectations in the right way because they're always the hardcore and unstoppable action heroes and here on the other hand, they're beaten down, heavily flawed and schlubby drunks.
• The violence in the show will be very brutal, graphic and vicious but at the same time in a way that can be fun and enjoyed almost like the type of violence that you'd see in a lot of quality 90s action movies.
• I picture this as a limited series event that's about 18 episodes total with a clear and cohesive but also tight storyline that escalates more and more and has a clear and definitive beginning, middle and end.
• The main influences for the series are HBO's Spawn Trilogy, William Lustig's Vigilante, Luc "Yikes!" Besson's Leon The Professional, John Singleton's Shaft and Netflix's The Punisher with it almost being done in the same overall animation style and aesthetic of HBO's Spawn to where some could say they may as well be set in the same universe but for me it's because it's a distinctive old-school gritty 90s style that fits this.
• To give you an idea on what you're in for in this show, the first episode begins with an almost darkly comedic but casual montage of the brothers in action by killing several taboo and controversial people — they massacre O.J. Simpson on his deathbed, they lynch the old hag who lied and got Emmett Till killed, they cut out the tongue of Al Sharpton, they feed that weird bitchy lawyer of Harvey Weinstein to dogs and they even beat to death both Nickelodeon pedophiles Jason Handy and Brian Peck, finishing them off by castrating them. Basically, this is to show what you're in for and is a giant middle finger to modern animation.
