Raleigh Apartment Culture

So I'm of the mind that Raleigh is a great place to live. It has my favorite things, my favorite people, and I'm too broke to move anywhere else.

Raleigh works for me, but I recognize it doesn't work for everyone. Some people had less than ideal childhoods and wanna escape the state ASAP, some just want to live closer to their dream jobs or have new opportunities. That's all fine, but what if this describes where you are now?

What if, for the sake of argument, you're outside of NC and wanna move in? Moving is expensive, time-consuming, and risky at the best of times; so you wanna make sure that wherever you're landing is at least as good as where you started 90% of the time

"But RL," I hear you say, "you make Raleigh sound like an idyllic dreamscape populated with parks and a diverse kumbayah of peoples living in harmony"

I do talk about Raleigh in a positive light but, like a life saving medicine flavored like ass, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

So before you spend thousands of dollars on moving vans, boxes, and grits; here's a crash course on what it's like living in a Raleigh apartment, coming from someone whose majority of Raleigh Living (heh) has been in apartments.

First off, location. Any realtor will tell you that location is 80% of the sale to sound profound, and as anyone who has lived in the middle of ass-backward nowhere can tell you: It sucks having to drive 30 minutes to go anywhere.

Good news: With the Raleigh Beltline and connecting roads, there are very few places in Raleigh where your trip will last longer than thirty minutes one-way. Bad News: where you set down still matters because cutting down on travel is important for car and mental health.

North Raleigh is different from south Raleigh is different from northwest Raleigh, and the locals aren't the only difference you'll find between locations. Each segment of Raleigh has something to offer, with easier access to some attractions than others and neighboring cities for when you need something outside the RDU area.

Using downtown as the center of our wheel, people generally divide Raleigh into North and South Raleigh (with distinction given for NW, SE, NE, etc when needed). N.Raleigh is considered generally more upscale, a slice of suburban living interspersed with plenty of shopping centers for families and the moderately wealthy; but it's boring as all hell.

Want some fun? Excitement in the evenings and a more traditional urban experience with bars, night clubs, strip clubs, and more? South Raleigh is your best bet, at the cost of being the "sketchy" side of Raleigh. That kind of place where you'll see a bunch of auto shops that look abandoned but haven't been closed in the past 5 years and there's at least one customer from time to time.

Of course, this is a lot of generalizing but you'll find that it's still mostly accurate. The main exception in this is Capital Blvd, a highway cutting across north and south Raleigh on the eastern half of the city; a high crime corridor that's undergoing some changes in the northern half that have (somewhat) reduced crime but most people will still associate that area with the majority of Raleigh's crime and debauchery.

More importantly, is the distinction Raleigh citizens put on inside the beltline versus outside the beltline. The I-440 and 540 highways that wrap around Downtown form the mythical beltline, and to a degree what you have access to. Inside the beltline is the majority of workplaces, stores, and shopping centers; while outside you'll still have these things just to a more... dispersed extent.

North Raleigh actually kinda exemplifies this perfectly. Living inside the beltline, you have access to places like North Hills, Crabtree Valley mall, and Triangle Town Center. Live outside the beltline, like I currently am, and you're looking at 10 to 15 minutes to the nearest sheetz for that late night double hot dog fix.

So for point one: How important is it that you're near things? The majority of apartments and rental properties are in or around the belt-line, but if you want to save some cash on rent checks the cheaper properties are gonna extend your trips a bit.

Next, what can you expect in terms of neighbors? Does Raleigh have a hip party scene full of teens renting cheap apartments and blasting trap music at 3AM?

Depends on where you live

I swear not every point is going to be this, but there's an important distinction this time that affects the type of people your complex will likely have surrounding you; are you in North or South Raleigh?

North Raleigh has a ton of pre-schools, k-12 public schools (Leesville, Hillburn, Lead Mine, just to name a few), and office complexes that make up the job market. As a result the majority of apartment renters in north Raleigh tend to be families with a few small kids or so.

As a result, living off of Glenwood North and Edwards Mill I never had any noise problems from neighbors, the worst being kids playing outside at 3PM sounding like they were being murdered (which apparently is a common thing and I apologize to any neighbors I frightened with ghastly shrieks).

What I did have a problem with, however, was the typical Karen's you hear people complain about online. Renting a property now, we have access to our neighborhood's NextDoor page and it's hilarious sometimes to go on and read the comments, but living at a certain property we had a sort of mini-Facebook for residents

That thing was always full of either people who were moving out looking to sell their furniture or people passive-aggressively challenging each other/the apartment managers with comments about things happening around the complex.

Once I logged in to see one man accuse another, without ever actually accusing someone specific ("I know who did it and they should be ashamed" type post) of putting glass beer bottles under the tires of his truck to try and puncture them. Everyone acts civil in public, but then online they'll stir the pot harder than a chef with a hand mixer.

South Raleigh, you have the schools like Shaw University, Meredith, and NCSU; so the people renting down there are typically college kids. You'll see more apartments that cater towards them like University Village or University Woods, but sometimes these places will cater to both college kids and working adults

Avoid these places like the plague, because despite sometimes having a lower cost to live there the neighbors and their shenanigans will drive you up the wall (unless you're the type to join in, then go wild).

I've had friends stay at places like University Village and The Proper (formerly The Vie, formerly Wolf Creek) who've shared horror stories. 3AM parties ending in property damage or vomit in inconvenient places, drug deals not even trying to be subtle, and maintenance workers doing nothing because regardless of the apartment conditions; no school's gonna pull their contract with them unless news articles start getting written.

Otherwise, south Raleigh apartments are largely like north Raleigh apartments; except the crime rate tends to be a little higher and you'll run into more singles and people working full time.

Otherwise, Raleigh apartment culture is like apartment culture anywhere else in the country. You have a mix of apartments catering to those just looking to live versus more ostentatious luxury apartments with fancy pools, exercise facilities, and tech packages to draw people in.

If you're renting in Raleigh, however, do try to get a roommate or two if you can manage. Even with a decent job paying 800+ on a one bedroom one bath apartment can be exhausting at best, but with even one other person that can functionally halve your expenses

So if you're a young professional, or a student, or even if you have a small family, I can safely recommend renting in Raleigh. There's plenty of places that'll accommodate you, and cater towards your needs.

But what about everyone else? Are there people who shouldn't rent in Raleigh?

But there are groups who I'd seriously ask to consider their other choices before picking Raleigh as a destination for their new home.

For instance, are you a member of the LGBT community? A trans or non-binary individual? Well then, first off, I want you to know that you're loved and valid. I'm accepting of who you are and appreciate everyone's right to identify how they choose, but I'm not everyone.

Raleigh's bluer than other parts of North Carolina, as I've stated in other blog write-ups, but it's still part of North Carolina unfortunately and as a result, you'll face some challenges.

I doubt anyone's gonna burn a cross in your yard or knock over your mailbox, but Raleigh doesn't offer LGBT protections for housing, jobs, or credit/lending discriminations according to the Movement Advancement Project's website.

We have support organizations for LGBT and NB individuals, plenty of high schools and colleges have Gay-Straight Alliance clubs, and there are numerous businesses downtown that cater specifically to those individuals... but we're also the state that got into a lot of hot water because of a stupid bathroom bill, and our politicians are trying to pass anti-trans sports legislation (because they now magically care about the integrity of womens sports).

By that measure, but to a lesser extent, if you fall outside the Liberal/Conservative political spectrum then be prepared to have no one to discuss your politics with outside of a few sparse networks like the DSA.

Additionally, if you don't have someone to room with or a significant other to split costs with; you may want to try searching somewhere a little cheaper.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Raleigh housing prices aren't terrible for a major metropolitan city, but we're not the best prices in the world.

You can get prices on apartments and rentals lower than say, California or New York. However, compared to other parts of NC like Greensboro or Garner; rentals are still a bit much.

On average, a Raleigh apartment can run you about $900 for a single bedroom and a single bathroom. You can find cheaper, but often times there's some risk associated (Crime levels, quality of the room, quality of the property manager, etc.) Looking for a two bedroom? Then your average price is gonna jump up to around $1,200, and this is all before utilities and cable come into play.

It's true a lot of companies around here will pay more than the $7.25 minimum wage, but most low-skilled jobs will pay around 10-11 an hour.

I guess though, that's kind of an obvious statement. "Don't live in Raleigh if you can't afford to live in Raleigh."

I might expand on these thoughts at a later time, but hopefully for now I've given you some food for thought; or at the very least an entertaining read for a few minutes.

I love my city, and I love the friends I've made in it, but the sad truth is that nowhere is perfect for everyone; leastways Raleigh. If Raleigh sounds like the kind of place you'd like to live in, at least take a day trip to come visit and see how things go that way. Visit some stores, meet some locals, and form an opinion off of more than travel blogs and youtube videos.

There's enough puke to deal with it like I said at this age these men and boys displayed a very ignorant and coherent attitude that we really awarded the death of the girl can't leave no choices and have these men pretend to be real animals. As I said we're in a strip mall with some tiny bicycle lane and free rental places right up and down the sidewalk to pretender animals and almost hurt girls born intentionally for the cameras and we did not believe the animals act for the satellite

So at this point in timeline we need the silent operators wife and daughter's death because of their pitch forcing me look up and the puking in my mouth and then puking up within the rest of my stomach

They are originally from Washington state and, having traveled extensively, “fell in love” with Brooksville, actively participating in its Main Street program and the Good Neighbor Trail. Mike became chair of Hernando County’s Tourism Board. They had a stellar reputation with the B & B but wanted more freedom in their lives than its management allowed. Enter Deborah and Roger King, who purchased The Dolan House Bed & Breakfast in 2019. Deborah and Roger came to Brooksville from the Saint Petersburg, Florida area. They wanted to be closer to their daughter and grandchild and found running The Dolan House to be the perfect opportunity to use combination of Roger’s culinary prowess, military-style cleanliness, and Deborah’s hospitality, decorating, and management gifts.

The Dolan House grounds are exquisitely maintained, with huge live oaks and seasonal flowers providing pops of color. The Ederington-Snow History The Ederington family were pioneers in Hernando County. Colonel Francis Ederington originally moved to Hernando County from South Carolina in 1851. He and his wife, Precious Ann, brought livestock, farming equipment and household goods, while traveling through rough land with poor roads.

Colonel Ederington bought the property now known as Chinsegut Hill and the surrounding 160 acres for farming and timber. He and his wife had ten children, most of whom were born at the plantation. Both Colonel Ederington and his wife died while still in their 40s: Francis in 1866 and Precious Ann in 1869. Their eldest daughter, Charlotte, was left to care for her siblings and the estate. In 1871, she married Dr. James Russell Snow, listed as a dentist, also from South Carolina. They made the plantation their home and named the estate Snow Hill, having seven children of their own, and raising Charlotte’s younger siblings, one of whom built The Dolan House.

The rich purple bedspread and matching drapes provide a luxurious feel and the furniture is solid wood and well-built. There is an attached bath with a modern walk-in shower and plenty of room. The Ederington Suite also features a screened-in balcony to provide natural light to the room, as well as the opportunity to have fresh air without Florida’s notorious insect population joining you. The view is relaxing, and the table and chairs provide a great place to plan your outings during your stay or enjoy afternoon tea and snacks.

A private bath is part of The Snow Room’s appointments and is only a few steps from the bedroom door. Fic: Sea Glass

A/N: Not sure why I wrote this. May be a stand alone piece or more. Who knows? I don’t. Anyways, pre IWTB, angst while on the run.

Scully had protested somewhere around Halloween she was tired of living like a nomad to Mulder. She was tired of living in motel rooms and eating take out all the time. She wanted to just stop and breathe for a few months without having to worry. Except he did worry. He was a wanted fugitive and was pretty sure Scully was as well.

"Why can't we just stop somewhere for a few months, Mulder," she had complained somewhere outside of Charleston, South Carolina. "And pretend we aren't on the run? Can we pretend to be normal for awhile?"

He could have argued otherwise, to prove a point, but he could see how tired she was in her eyes. Her hair was a different shade of brown, her red roots were beginning to show. "Fine," he agreed. "I'll find us a place."

The North Carolina department of transportation had just opened up highway NC 12 and resumed ferry operations between Hatteras and Ocracoke at the end of November. The Outer Banks were still feeling some of the effects of Hurricane Isabel that had rocked the area back in mid-September. And it was now mid-December, winter, pretty much dead to tourist except for the locals. Rebuilding the community had been slow but he managed to find a small seaside house for rent they could have up to the beginning of tourist season. He suggested somewhere along the border of South Carolina and North Carolina and then they did the seven-hour drive to Hatteras Island.

The beach house was named 'Heavenly Haven' and was a stark contrast to the large, luxurious vacations homes. A single level home raised on up on stilts, it was three bedrooms and one bath, a large living room, and kitchen, with a deck and the master bedroom overlooking the sand dunes. It was perfect.

As they departed South Carolina, driving northwards, Scully had grown quiet and withdrawn into herself. She had done that a lot lately. Mulder would try to draw her out into a conversation as he drove. It reminded him of before, a life before when they both used to be someone. But she remained silent. At first, he wondered if it was him that was causing it; no doubt he had part of the blame.

The silence was deafening. He was losing her. He couldn't lose her too. He couldn't.

So he drove them on through the night. She had fallen asleep, her head pressed against the passenger side window. She looked so small. As he started on the bridge, she awoke with the first jolt as soon as they hit the bridge.

She blinked herself awake, her blue eyes widening taking in the expansive Albermarle sound. She took a sharp intake of breath as she saw them driving towards the rising sun. She looked at Mulder, who was quiet. He had put on his sunglasses and lowered the sun visor. "Mulder?" she mumbled.

He could hear her confusion, concern. "I figured a change of scenery."

"Where are we?"

"Currently on the Wright Memorial Bridge connecting Currituck County to Dare County."

"Dare County," she mumbled. "The Outer Banks?"

"No place other," he replied.

"I thought they were closed," she mumbled. "'Cause of the hurricane."

"Just reopened a couple of weeks ago."

"What's here?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Nothing."

She frowned and looked out to the road ahead as the bridge ended. He pulled off the road at a Walmart. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "Mulder, why are you doing this?"

He turned the keys off from their car and turned to face her. He took off the sunglasses and gently caressed her cheek, his fingers running through her brown hair. "I thought we could do something different, maybe mix it up? I know you're tired. I just thought, maybe if we stay somewhere for more than a week, it could..." he shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe it would be good for you...us. We barely talk anymore. We..." His voice faded. "I thought it'd be nice. There is nothing between here and there."

"Where's there, Mulder?"

"Buxton."

She was quiet, choosing to not say anything. She drew out her own sunglasses from the glove box. Mulder licked his lips, uncertain of what to say. She turned and looked out into the parking lot.

"Aren't you coming with?" he asked.

"I'm fine here, Mulder."

He bit his lip and withdrew his hand. All he seemed to do was cause her pain. All he had done was ruin her life. He was a plague on her very existence. He lowered his eyes and pulled down his sunglasses. "I'll be back in a bit," he sighed and got out of the car.

The silence continued to ensue between them as they drove the extra hour and a half down the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. Scully's eyes were trained on the endless sand dunes and the Pamlico Sound. Mulder's eyes continued to stay trained on the road. He had loaded up their car with groceries, enough to last a month. As they entered Buxton, he pulled up to the small rental property. Scully got out first and took a moment to look at the small property and then back to Mulder. "For real, Mulder?"

He stood by the door of the car, watching her take the first steps to the house. "Yes."

She looked back at him and then the house and back to him. Mulder sighed and tossed her the keys. She caught them cleanly and unlocked the house without another word. He rolled his eyes and looked down at his feet. Maybe this was one big mistake. Maybe he really and truly lost her for good. Sighing once more, he began to unload all the groceries and their bags without another word.

He could not find her when he got done. Mulder had put away all of their groceries, put their bags in the master bedroom, although he was unsure if they would be sharing a bed at this point. Ever since Flordia, she had completely withdrawn from him. Erected walls and entrenched herself away from him and the entire world. Not a word except the basics and 'I'm fine, Mulder.' He wandered the halls of the rental looking for her. His heart began to speed up when he could not find Scully. Had she actually left?

He rushed down the deck towards the sand dunes to the beach. He saw her at the water's edge, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. He slowed as he approached her. Her gaze was focused eastwards to the sun and the incoming waves. "Scully?"

"Why here, Mulder?" she asked in a small voice. "What do you hope to accomplish?"

To save us, he thought. But he remained silent. She turned to face him, tears streaked down for her crystal blue eyes.

"Answer me, Mulder!"

"I..." he paused, scratching his stubble, looking down at his feet. "I picked up some hair dye for you while I was at the store."

"Oh joy. What color this time? Black? Blonde? Maybe blue perhaps?" she spat, looking back out the sea.

"Red."

She was quiet and gazed at him before walking past him back up to the house. Mulder sighed, kicking the sand, and stared back out into the sea. The sea churned angrily, just like her heart, he supposed, cutting him off from her and everything else and drowning him.

It was like she was purposely avoiding him. No. She was trying to avoid him. No. She was avoiding him. Winter had come early and the cold Atlantic winds had come into the small rental and divided them across the expansive ocean. Divided and they shall fall.

The first week was tough. Scully had dyed her hair back to red but still did not speak to Mulder. They slept in separated rooms. She had put his things in one of the guest rooms instead of the master bedroom with her. He went out one afternoon while she sat in the living room reading and came back with a small two-foot Christmas tree with false color lights. Wordlessly, he put it in the corner of the living room. She watched him soundlessly. He left and disappeared back into the other guest room. Christmas came and went. Neither one of them spoke to each other still.

He lay in the guest bed, reading some random book, the small tv on with some hockey game. Mulder's mind wandered though, unable to focus on anything else. He did not want to admit it. He rubbed his chest, his heart. He could still feel it breaking. Except it was already gone. He had lost her. Admit it, say it out loud. "I lost you," he whispered to the empty room.

He felt tears come. He would tell her to go and live on without him. And he would be alone. A fitting end to his life. He heard the door open and he saw her standing in the door way with a long blanket wrapped around her. He said nothing and neither did she. Scully had tears in her eyes as well. Wordless, she came to his side, slipping onto the bed. She snuggled up to his side, snaked her arm around his chest, pulled the blanket around them, and buried her face into his chest. He felt silent sobs rack her body and all he could do was hold her.

Scully had fallen asleep against him through her crying. He took a moment to admire her beauty one more time, one more time before he told her to live without him and be free. He played with the new red locks. God, he had missed it. Quietly, he untangled himself from her and got up. It would be New Year's day soon. He had been so optimistic with her at the beginning of the new millennium. Now, four years later, he had lost everything. She groaned in protest at him leaving her side.

"Mulder?" she mumbled sleepily.

"Do you want some tea?" he asked softly.

"Hm," she groaned again. "No."

The most they had spoken in weeks. Maybe now was the time, while her defenses were down. But he still cared about her. No. He would wait for the right moment. He got up without saying anything else and went out into the living room. He gathered his jacket and went to go sit out on the deck and watch the sea in thought. But she followed him.

"Mulder, we need to talk."

Well, maybe she would beat him to the punch.

"We do," he sighed, shifting in the lounge chair.

More silence. She sat across from him, huddled in one of his jackets that seemed to swallow her. She pulled a hood up over her head to shield herself from the cold. Inwardly he sighed, wondering if he was overstepping his bounds. He opened his arm slightly. "Scully, come here. You're going to freeze."

She sighed, stubbornly but allowed herself to sit in his lap and feel his arms come around her. She closed her eyes and instinctively rested her head in the crook of her neck. She felt warm and remembered how much he still loved her.

"I think," he began, "you should get as far away from as possible. Live your life. It's obvious you would better without me."

She sat up, angrily. "No. Mulder, no."

"Why not?" he asked. "You have cast me out to sea. What has this past month been?"

She took a deep breath and looked out to the sea. Her blue eyes watered. "I..I don't know, Mulder. I'm just so tired. Tired of running, tired of hiding, tired of not being me anymore. I don't even know how I am anymore!" she cried. Instinctively, she leaned into him and she felt his arms come around her. "I don't know who I am anymore, Mulder."

He took a deep breath and nuzzled her forehead. "You're Scully, my brilliant, stubborn, out of this Scully...my touchstone," he whispered. "No one else. But if anything..." He took another deep breath. "Maybe, maybe it proves the point that you'd be better without me."

"No," she stoutly huffed. "No. We're in this together. This is about us. I won't leave you. I stopped talking to you...I just needed time, Mulder."

He was quiet. "And what did you decide?"

"I'm still here, aren't I? I don't scare that easily." Mulder closed his eyes in relief. He kissed her forehead gently, her eyelids, her cheeks, her lips. "I love you, Mulder. Never doubt that."

All he could manage was a nod.

She relaxed. "I like it here," she whispered, looking out to the sea.

"I hoped you would. We have it until May."

"Maybe, in the future," she whispered to him, "we could just stop running. One day, we could just find a place to call home."

"I'd like that," he whispered back, rubbing her arms. "A little house, middle of nowhere. Just us."
