at 10 years old, yangyang tells you he wants to be an astronaut. when you ask him why, he replies, “i’m gonna go up there,” he leans out the window of the treehouse and waves his arms dramatically to the sky, “and i’m gonna visit every corner of the universe. i’ll go to the moon, to mars, to galaxies far, far away!”

“but most importantly,” he continues, turning to you with a toothy grin, “i’ll take every star i meet, and when i come back down here, i’ll give them all to you!” he punctuates his sentence with a tackle-hug, and you both end up on the floor of the treehouse in a fit of giggles.

at 17 years old, in the back of yangyang’s truck with a view of the town and the entire night sky, you ask yangyang if he still wants to be an astronaut. with his glittering eyes still pointed upwards, he tells you.

“yeah. sometimes i wonder if i should have more realistic dreams, if i should just give up this big children’s fantasy i’ve been protecting my whole life.”

“but i don’t think dreams are supposed to be realistic," he continues after a heartbeat. "they’re supposed to be bold and wildly impossible and they’re supposed to make you wanna do anything to reach them.” he raises an open palm to the sky and sweeps it across the stars. “and i still have to keep my promise to you, don’t i, y/n?”

you giggle and tear your eyes away from the entrancing night sky to look at him. “is a promise to me made in a dinky little treehouse really that worth it to you?”

he meets your eyes, smiling with a sly twinkle in his eyes. “definitely. you’re worth all the stars in the universe in my eyes.”

“you’re so cheesy, yang.”

he only replies by leaning over, lowering his face until the distance between your lips closes. that night, you kissed your best friend for the very first time.

at 26 years old, while already clad in his spacesuit, yangyang pulls you close into a tight embrace. after a few moments of comfortable warmth, he pulls away to cup your face in his hands and kiss away the small drops rolling down your cheeks. “why are you crying? i promised you a thousand times that i’d come back safe and sound.”

“i know. i’m crying because, god, look at you! imagine how little ten-year-old you must see you right now.” he laughs. you wipe at your tears with the heel of your palm. “but, still… i don’t know how i’ll get through seven months without you, yang.”

yangyang pulls you back into his arms. “i’m sorry, y/n.”

“don’t be sorry! don’t ever be sorry. it’s not your fault for doing what you’ve always dreamed of.” yangyang smiles against your hair.

there’s a few more quiet moments of the two of you relishing in the last touches you’ll have of each other for a long while. when it’s finally almost time for him to leave, yangyang presses a short, sweet kiss to your lips.

“you’ll come home to me safe, promise?”

“promise. and with all the stars in my arms, just for you.”
