Fatoumata Diawara Live Preview: 10/6, City Winery, Chicago

You'd think that an album cheekily titled London Ko (a play on the Malian capital of Bamako) might evenly place Fatoumata Diawara's singing and electric guitar playing alongside her notable cast of collaborators. Yet, the singer-songwriter's fifth album (3ème Bureau/Wagram Music), her finest yet, is as personal as it is a showcase for her band and featured contemporaries. Yes, six of the album's fourteen tracks were co-produced with Damon Albarn, and Diawara's mix of falsetto vibrato and smoky baritone nestles comfortably within the confines of everyone from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus to the soulful breaths of Angie Stone. But it's Diawara's poignant diatribes and life-affirming tributes that make the album stand out.

London Ko is primarily an album of uplift. "Somaw" and "Mogokan" are sweet tributes to family and brotherhood. The former looks back at Diawara's move from Bamako to France, featuring finger-snapped percussion built around acoustic guitar arpeggios and staccato piano. The latter, which features Ghanaian rapper M. Anifest, sports hip hop rhythms and drum fills and gospel-inflected keyboards. In fact, Diawara bolsters her influences throughout the record, emphatically journeying through Black music all over the world. From the house piano of "Massa Den" and dub of "Dambe" to the West African blues of "Dakan" and the funk of "Tolon", Diawara centers the declaration to "Let us unite and be one." Perhaps most thrilling is "Blues", featuring Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, his trills dancing atop forward-charging drums.

But as celebratory as London Ko often sounds and is, it does its fair share of mourning, too. On "Sete", like on Fatou's "Boloko", Diawara decries the practice of FGM, this time atop mournful keys and bluesy guitars. The forceful "Yada" sees her proclaim her worth, perhaps in contrast to a rich man, blistering guitar solos and fried keyboards carrying her singing. These songs are reminders that, to Diawara, making music--especially as a Malian woman playing guitar--is as much a political act as an artistically fulfilling one, never taking for granted the power of her own voice.

❝Loving yourself in the ways you want and need to be loved will afford you the ability to recognize when someone else is loving you properly. I don’t mean this in the sense that you can't, like, be loved until you love yourself, because I disagree with that notion. I don’t like it, I think anyone who spouts it is full of shit and a sanctimonious idiot. I just believe that you must at least identify for yourself the ways you need to be loved, and not settle for anything less. Have a few headcanons for some of my fave characters!

Zeke

Zeke literally died from frostbite and came back so I think when he gets sick or has a fever, he gets the chills

Because he died from the literal cold before I think that would also make him emotional in a lowkey ptsd sort of way - delirious and cold and not sure how to fix it

Zeke is a major empath so if people around him are sick, I think he feels it too. Sort of like those phantom pregnancies that some men experience? I forget if that’s actually what they’re called? Sympathetic? Don’t quote me on that lol

Also because he’s sober I think he wouldn’t want to use NyQuil or cough meds

Ben

Ben is a super duper good caretaker. Dad of three??? You can’t tell me this man doesn’t know how to take care of people.

Ben also seems to be easier going in terms of slowing down to actually rest? Like he’ll probably still check shit out if it’s just a cold but otherwise he’ll just work from home like a normal person.

If he’s super sick maybe he can’t differentiate fever dreams from callings.

Mick

Mick thinks she can handle everything on her own. Whether it’s Jared or Zeke telling her to slow down, she isn’t gonna listen. She’ll find her way around it or around them to get shit done.

If she gets a calling and she’s sick she’s going to go investigate anyways because it’s in her nature to put others and their safety first.

Jared

Listen okay. I think Jared is so fine. Like jeeeeeeesus. That’s not a headcanon that’s just a fact 🫡

Jared’s the guy who would stay home sick but if Mick called him for help or if he knew she was about to get into trouble, he’d be out of bed in a heartbeat to go stop her or bail her out

Oona’s life before the police academy was quite ordinary. She grew up just outside Olympia, Washington in the suburbs playing cops and robbers with her younger brother, Gabe, and the neighbor kids that lived along their cul-de-sac. Ever since she’d been five years old, Oona knew exactly what she wanted to do. She was accepted into the Washington State Patrol academy just outside of Seattle and made the top of her class in just one year. When she graduated, Oona’s career path had already been mapped out. She worked lower level positions in the field for years before anything substantial came her way; a new position in homicide just outside her hometown. Oona was twenty-five years old when tasked with tracking down a serial killer who’d been on the run for weeks. Going off a lead, Oona went after the perp by herself against her partner’s wishes. What she came across wasn’t a person at all, but instead a rather large, wolf-like beast.  

When she finally came to, two men were with her, one who claimed to be a police chief and the other who claimed to be a councilman. Patrick Antrim and Meyer Lowell, just two people telling her impossible things that couldn’t possibly be true. Like that she’d been turned into a werewolf, and she’d been admitted into a town inhabited by supernatural beings with witches, nymphs, and other shit that couldn’t possibly exist. In her confusion she tried leaving town, and much to her dismay the councilman and the police chief were right. Manifesting into a werewolf, Oona nearly killed an innocent, one of her greatest fears. After that, she flung herself into training. Oona wanted to know about the town’s history, about various species, and everything there was to know about werewolves. Things began looking up when she gained control; she even managed to make a friend, a witch, by the name of Hal. Hell, she even met someone, another werewolf like herself named Nathan Friedman, a man who was even more charming than he was handsome. Until the night of Lethe’s annual gala, Oona had stopped worrying about what may come next. Though as it turned out, her biggest challenge was yet to come. Even after she caught onto boyfriend’s terrifying plans, Oona was unable to stop Nathan from killing Patrick, her friend, her boss, her mentor.

Everything after that felt like a blur. Catching Friedman, getting Patrick back, losing Friedman, killing him…killing Nathan Friedman changed her life, and it even threw Oona off her path. The thing was, she hadn’t meant to kill him, but on the day of the open council meeting, things went haywire. Everyone lost control, even her. But in the midst of something terrible, something quite beautiful emerged in its wake. Love found her in the form of someone she’d been close with for a while now, a friend. Hal became her crutch, her shoulder to cry on and even after a while, her home. Along with this relationship came a sense of confidence in the werewolf, which in the long run earned her a position at the precinct as a detective. She loves her job, her relationship with Hal, and the home they’ve built together. But news of a pregnancy puts doubt in Oona’s mind. A kid is a big commitment, one her and Hal had only just began discussing. Her hope is that this only strengthens their bond, rather than it being the end of something great.
