sapphicsecrecy's favorite books!
hi! today I thought I'd give a quick summary of my favorite books as a way for you to get to know me better and maybe find something of interest. let me know how you felt about any of these! I'd love to talk about them.
1. the secret history by donna tartt
yep, no surprise here. richard papen, in a twist of fate, is thrust into an elite group of college students who find themselves spiraling into a dionysian madness of sorts. complete with relentless male gaze, drunk shenanigans, and a bacchanal gone awry. engaging, gorgeous writing, with a fascinating cast of characters.
2. coraline by neil gaiman
for me, this is a childhood favorite, both in film and book form. young coraline jones stumbles upon a small door in her family's new flat, which leads to an identical flat, except everything seems better. that is, until it's not. charming, unsettling in the best way possible, and one of my favorite fictional worlds.
3. alice in wonderland by lewis carroll
okay, okay, another childhood favorite. curious alice, chasing a peculiar white rabbit, stumbles down a rabbit hole headfirst into a world of absolute madness. alice in wonderland has my favorite imagery of any franchise (playing cards, flowers with heads, tea time, living chess pieces, etc). classic and whimsical.
4. house of leaves by mark z. danielewski
to avoid giving too much away, the basic premise of the story is that a young family moves into their new home on ash street, and find that the house is bigger on the inside than on the outside. a semiotician's dream, and a book that genuinely navigates like a labyrinth.
5. vicious by v.e. schwab
different from my standard tastes, but a bit of a staple in the dark academia community. vicious is about victor and eli, two brilliant former friends seeking revenge against one another for the follies of their youth, and the events that secured their extraordinary powers. an abundance of moral ambiguity and existential crisis wrapped in an adult fantasy. also an adorable found family.
6. lost boy: the true story of captain hook by christina henry
a retelling of the classic tale of peter pan, in which jamie, our main character, becomes peter's best friend, and eventually his greatest enemy. there's a delightful cast of characters here, with just enough of the macabre to stand out against other retellings. peter is the chilling villain in this part "lord of the flies" and part coming-of-age story. engaging and appropriately brutal.
7. the wasp factory by iain banks
I was careful not to label the list as recommendations, and this book was the main reason why. meet 16-year-old frank, a troubled and likely sociopathic boy who spends his days wreaking brutal havoc on local wildlife, receiving frightening calls from his older brother who has broken out of a psychiatric hospital, and falling into obsessive, meticulous patterns to cope with it all. not for the light of heart, but wry, sardonic, and frustratingly endearing in its tone.
8. the song of achilles by madeline miller
another retelling, this time centered around the lives of patroclus and achilles up until the trojan war. the writing in this book is dazzling, with a great mlm relationship. in classic homer fashion, it is a tragic and moving depiction of two iconic greek figures. I cried like,, four times while reading this. also a dark academia must.

rom-com recommendations #1
♡♡♡
1. Flipped Directed by Rob Reiner, starring Callan McAuliffe and Madeline Carrol
I may be slightly biased towards Flipped but I did grow up with it, and I’ve loved it for more or less half of my life ever since I watched it in 2010, back when I was just about 7 - I barely understood it at the time, but I remember loving every minute of it even back then. It’s also directed by Rob Reiner, who’s films I adore (and we both know his films are going to appear again on this list) and I really love the whole enemies to friends to lovers trope that the film embodies - so this movie truly panders to every single one of my not-so-guilty pleasures.
The movie is about Bryce and July - polar opposites and aside from the fact that they live in the same neighbourhood they have little to nothing in common. July has been practically in love with Bryce her entire life and Bryce has been more or less repulsed for all of his. But somewhere along the lines tables turn and the whole thing makes for a slightly bittersweet, highly nostalgic, and extremely cute love story, that follows themes of growing up, family trouble and social class divides but in a youthful and truly enjoyable way.
♡♡♡
2. (500) Days Of Summer Directed by Marc Webb, starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
If there is one love story you should watch it is this one, and that’s because It’s a truly realistic depictions of an actual relationship, at least as far as I am aware. The film is opens by announcing that this is not you’re typical love story - that’s true and for the sake of not spoiling this movie for you I won’t say exactly why. But, I can almost say it’s not really a love story at all, and more like a case study or a documentary on a relationship, framed by sporradic days in it’s timeline led by a main character that doesn’t really understand why it allnturned out the way it did.
I first watched it when I was consoling a friend after a break-up, in true teenage girl fashion, and we decided to watch a movie. I chose this one (a mistake on my part), and halfway into the movie she burst into tears and whined about how love was meaningless and the movie “really get’s me, man.” At the end of the day I have to tell you to watch this movie, and if you don’t want to see it because you don’t think you’ll enjoy it’s bittersweet, sadder, elements - as many I’ve recommended it to do, watch it because they yell “Penis!” repeatedly at a park.
♡♡♡
3. Notting Hill Directed by Roger Mitchell, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts
I watched this movie a lot growing up because it’s my mom’s favourite and she watched it approximately twenty times a year. So, perhaps I’m biased when it comes to this one too, except I really didn’t like it as a kid, I always thought the movie stretched their romance for far too long. Now, when I watch it again years later, I realise that was perhaps what the movie was going for - delaying the inevitable that is, and it is exactly what makes the movie so damn satisfying.
It is clear to everyone that Anna and William are destined for each other - but them, and when I was a kid watching Notting Hill that’s what annoyed me the most in this movie. However now I watch it and think how could they know? The whole premise of the move is that they come from different worlds, and in what world would a bookseller think he belongs with a movie star? But the movie pulls through in ways I didn’t realise as a kid, it’s bright and full of fun, witty, and now iconic dialogue, and now when my mom watches Notting Hill for the seventeenth time this year, I am more than happy to join her.
♡♡♡
4. The Big Sick Directed by Michael Showalter, starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan
I grew up India and despite the clashes between India and Pakistan the cultures are very similar. I did not grow up in a family like Kumail Nanjiani’s, but I was surrounded by tonnes of similar ones, many friends of mine are exactly where he was in the movie now. But the big sick, despite having themes and tones more introspective than most rom coms, is at it’s a core an undeniably fun ride, full of tonnes of funny moments, brilliant performances and completely new, barely explored, variations of the romantic-comedy genre.
The big sick shouldn’t be as crowd pleasing and comedic as it is, considering it’s melodramatic plot, but the movie definitely made me - and a lot of people - leave theatres laughing. The movie also defies categorization, yes I’ve put it in a rom com list, but it also revolves around race, overcoming illness, the mingling of different cultures and so much more - stuff that you would never associate with the genre, and still, the movie is an unexpectedly but undeniably fun ride
♡♡♡
5. When Harry Met Sally Directed by Rob Reiner, starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal
When Harry Met Sally was bound to be on this list, you knew, I knew it, we all knew it - and for me, When Harry Met Sally is simply one of the most charming movies I have ever seen. With it’s clever writing, endearing characters and great performances, the movie has solidified itself as a classic of the rom com genre. The film feels almost effortless, and completely original, and I find myself just as enthralled now, after watching it time and time again, as I was the first time I watched it.
The movie takes something familiar, and gives it a twist - it’s a common trope, boy meets girl, they don’t like each other, they’re forced to spend time together, and somehow they fall in love. But in When Harry Met sally it goes more like: boy meets girl, they don’t like each other, and then they say goodbye forever - except no, they don’t, and they meet again. Five years later. They still can’t stand each other, and it happens again - goodbye. And then five more years pass, they meet again and this time they stay in touch for the rest of the movie and build an actual relationship. It’s become one of my favourite movies, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen it, or you know every line by heart, or even if you can’t stand rom coms - watch When Harry Met Sally, now if you’d like.

Movie Review: I Can Only Imagine
I Can Only Imagine Genre: Drama/Family Rated: PG Release Date: March 16, 2018 Running Time: 1 hour 50 Minutes Directed By: The Erwin Brothers Starring: J. Michael Finley, Madeline Carroll, Trace Adkins, Priscilla Shirer, Cloris Leachman and Denis Quaid Synopsis: It's the song that brings ultimate hope to so many...often in the midst of life's most challenging moments. Amazingly, the song was written in mere minutes by MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard. In reality, those lyrics took a lifetime to craft. He found faith at a young age, but life was not easy for Bart. He leaned into an active imagination and his love of music as he escaped a troubled home life. As he grew older, Bart turned to football in hopes of somehow connecting with his abusive father. Chasing a dream, while running from broken relationships, Bart hit the road in a tour bus with his new band MercyMe. Many know the song I Can Only Imagine. This movie tells the story, behind the song. Review: I always approach the viewing of movies falling into the category of Christian, with a sense of hesitation. All too often they're poorly done, wishy washy and at worse, a movie targeted toward a very small audience. Even though the official genre for I Can Only Imagine falls into the Drama/Family category, I still approached my screening with a sense of caution. However, I'm happy to say the Erwin Brothers do not disappoint with their production in this movie. With a strong cast made up of such notables as Dennis Quaid, Cloris Leachman and Trace Adkins, I Can Only Imagine brings with it a sense of credibility and star power many such movies lack. The standout in the movie comes from newcomer to the big screen J. Michael Finley playing the lead role of Bart Millard. Finley made his broadway debut in Les Miserables in 2014. His brilliant acting performance is only heightened with his incredible vocal performance in this movie.
Clocking in at close to two hours, I Can Only Imagine falls prey to the long standing problem of - How to set up a story, without becoming fragmented and disjointed. While the problem does not last long, the first 20 minutes or so seem somewhat jumpy and non-connected, while the producers fill in the back story for the rest of the movie. Don't get me wrong, this is a brilliant example of the long lost art of storytelling. But, the opening scenes felt somewhat like riding in the back of a pickup truck bumping along a gravel road. Then, once the movie hits its stride, the story of the song and the songwriter, hits a home run. I Can Only Imagine is much more than just a song. It's a story of redemption. It's a story of a journey. It's a story of fatherhood. It's a story of pursuing your dreams, in the midst of the bumps and bruises of life. It's a story which only brings more meaning to the popular song I Can Only Imagine. In his book Seeing What is Sacred, Ken Gire writes: "The writer is a custodian of the stories once spoken around campfires. Stories we are admonished not to forget. A storyteller has the task of running behind the lines to make sure the stories live, to make sure those shining memories or our humanity, however brief, are not forgotten." I Can Only Imagine does just that. This is a the story behind the song, which started around a campfire. In the end, I Can Only Imagine not only brings a tear to your eye, but encourages you to love, forgive, and keep moving forward in the face of naysayers, no matter who they may be. Family-Friendly with a 3.5 out of 5 Lloyd Rating
My wife and I cut our teeth in the movie review world as movie critics in the mainstream arena for a number of years. Our main focus in what we called Frame by Frame, still holds true today - Is the movie family-friendly? With a rating of PG, we can say I Can Only Imagine firmly falls into the category of family-friendly. Back in the day our Frame by Frame rating system was based on what we called Lloyds. Short for celluloid, our film strip icon served us well, as we bring him back to life once again for reviews we're doing now. Our Director Lloyd to the left is giving his - and our - stamp of approval on this movie as family-friendly with a 3.5 out of 5 Lloyd rating. While I Can Only Imagine may not turn into a Box Office hit simply because of it's limited release, this is definitely a movie worth seeing, and yes, maybe even adding to your DVD library. If it's anything like the song, I Can Only Imagine the movie, is bound to not only find broad acceptance in the Christian marketplace, but also in the mainstream marketplace. Enjoy the show!
