What exactly is the Toei Fushigi Comedy Series? I've seen a lot of tokusatsu associated with it.
It was a series of programs created by Shotaro Ishinomori (the creator of Kamen Rider, Himitsu Sentai Goranger and Kikaider) with a more light hearted feel. The included cute robot shows, magical animals, magical thieves and in the end a series of magical girls shows before it ended in 1993.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t as thematically consistent as the Kamen Rider, Super Sentai or Metal Hero franchises but it did give viewers something new with each show.
Tumblr media
Sadly, as it is not very well known in the West and didn’t get an Americanized adaptation like Super Sentai, Kamen Rider Black RX or a few of the Metal Heroes shows, it’s not really very prominent in the fandom.
Tumblr media
Here is a list of the shows and when they aired:
Robot 8-chan (ロボット8ちゃん)  -October 4, 1981, to September 26, 1982
Batten Robomaru (バッテンロボ丸) -October 3, 1982, to September 25, 1983
Pettonton (ペットントン)   -October 2, 1983 to August 26, 1984
Dokincho! Nemurin (どきんちょ!ネムリン)  -September 2, 1984, to March 31, 1985
Katteni! Kamitaman (勝手に!カミタマン) - April 7, 1985, to March 30, 1986
Morimori Bokkun (もりもりぼっくん) -April 6 to December 28, 1986
Omoikkiri Tanteidan Hadogumi (おもいっきり探偵団 覇悪怒組) - January 11 to December 27, 1987
Jaman Tantei-dan Maringumi (じゃあまん探偵団 魔隣組)  -January 10, 1988, to January 1, 1989
Magical Chinese Girl Pai Pai! (魔法少女ちゅうかなぱいぱい!) - January 9 to July 9, 1989
Magical Chinese Girl Ipanema! (魔法少女ちゅうかないぱねま!) - July 23 to December 24, 1989
La Belle Fille Masquée Poitrine (美少女仮面ポワトリン) - January 7 to December 30, 1990
Mysterious Nile Girl Thutmose (不思議少女ナイルなトトメス) -January 6 to December 29, 1991
Utau! Dai Ryugujo (うたう!大龍宮城) - January 5 to December 27, 1992
Yugenjikko Sisters Chouchoutrian (有言実行三姉妹シュシュトリアン)  - January 10 to October 31, 1993

Note
Why do you think there's not much interest in Fushigi Comedy series in the U.S.? With the popularity of magical girl shows and the Toei superheroes among the anime/toku fandom, it seems like they'd be a great fit.
If i had to speculate on why it’s because of it’s relative obscurity when compared to Toei’s other franchises.  Super Sentai got adapted into Power Rangers, which is still going strong which lead to fans seeking out the original version.
Tumblr media
VR Troopers used footage from the Metal Heroes franchise, which in turn made people curious about what the source was like.
Tumblr media
That abominable Saban Masked Rider show brought people into wanting to see if the original was something great that had just been trashed.
Tumblr media
As for Ultraman, well that and its sequel, Ultraseven got dubs in the US that aired in syndication and cable starting in the 1970s so it was already a media presence if only for a certain nostalgic sector of the population.
Tumblr media
The Toei Fushigi Comedy Series though has never had any kind of media presence, even an adapted (or mangled) form in the US.  Yes Magical Girls are popular in the US but that’s pretty much restricted to the anime market.  We didn’t even get the frankly amazing live action version of Sailor Moon from 2003 with an official US release and that’s the biggest name in the genre.
Tumblr media
I think that’s the major reason Toei’s other major tokusatsu series never really caught on in the US.  There was no exposure.  It languishes in obscurity along with shows like Guyferd and Changerion that, while produced by big names in the industry never got an adaptation or a media presence in the US and thus never really got a chance to catch on with fans.
It may also be that the entries in the Toei Fushigi Comedy Series are so wildly different.  You had funny animal series like Dokincho! Nemurin
Tumblr media
Comedic Robot Shows such as Robot 8-chan
Tumblr media
And later the more famous Magical Girl shows like Magical Chinese Girl Ipanema!
Tumblr media
Some of these are things that just aren’t very popular in the US or almost impossible to give the Saban-style adaptation treatment to. The heroines do not wear face-obscuring helmets during the action scenes thus making it impossible to hire American actors to portray the characters out of costume.
That’s sad though because the few bits of the franchise I have seen are really, really good and I would love to see more!
Tumblr media
Thanks for the question!

50 Superheroine Challenge: the answers
The challenge was simple: identify fifty superheroines from television and movie clips, only five seconds per clip. To make it that bit more tricky, a few of the heroines may appear in more than one version.
youtube
Here’s a list of everyone in the video, along with the clip sources. For Japanese characters that never made it to Western tv, such as the Toei Fushigi Comedy heroines, I’ve used the anglicized translations of their names that frequently appear on fan websites.
1: Batgirl, played by Yvonne Craig, from Batman (1966--1968) 2: Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), played by Elizabeth Olsen, from Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 3: Darna, played by Anjanette Abayari, from Darna; The Return (1994) 4: Miss America, played by Nagisa Maria and Misu Amerika Nidaime, from Battle Fever J (1979--1980) 5: Wonder Woman, played by Ellie Wood Walker and Linda Harrison (reflection), from Wonder Woman Unaired Pilot (1967).
6: Ladybug, voiced by Cristina Vee, from Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (2015--) 7: Invisible Girl (Woman), played by Rebecca Staab, from The Fantastic Four (1994) 8: Nile Totometsu, played by Horikawa Sanae, from Mysterious Nile Girl Thutmose (1991) 9: Mary Marvel, voiced by Dawn Jeffory, from The Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam! (1981--1982) 10: Janet Bin, played by Ada Choi, from Fly With Me (2010)
11: Ultra Woman, played by Teri Hatcher, from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993--1997) 12: Storm, played by Halle Berry, from X-Men (2000) 13: Fire, played by Michelle Hurd, from Justice League of America (1997) 14: Web Woman, voiced by Linda Gray, from Tarzan and the Super 7 (1978--1980) 15: Jaime Sommers (The Bionic Woman), played by Lindsay Wagner, from The Bionic Woman (1976-1978)
