I just want to say a #happybirthday to my youngest, #Luna just turned 5! We told her teachers at the beginning of the school year that she had a very sophisticated sense of humor. 11. “Wow, you look….amazing.”

The stench of monster blood is filling Zatanna’s nose and head and everything, and her fingers are buzzing from using too much magic, and her tongue hurts from speaking backwards. Her hair is plastered to her face and back from sweat and the blood that splatted her and she considers tying it back but her arms are too tired.

“Bleh,” she says, doubling over. Maybe killing monsters will get easier with time, but Zatanna’s only been on the streets for a few years and she hasn’t killed many monsters of this scale at all. She wants to vomit but she’s too tired.

“How do I look?” John asks from behind her. Zatanna doesn’t want to turn around just to look at her friend equally covered in monster blood.

“Fine, I’m sure,” she says, and he says, “No, you have to actually look.”

She huffs and turns. He is, as she suspected, covered entirely in monster blood, but he’s also wearing a battered up trench coat over his other clothes. The coat isn’t in much better shape than the rest of him, and it’s like four sizes too big. Zatanna isn’t sure where he got that coat–the garbage, perhaps? He’s standing right next to a dumpster, after all.

“Well?” he asks, and he’s clearly talking about the coat. He’s grinning big and wide like an idiot, and she isn’t sure how he has any energy.

“You look….amazing,” she says sarcastically, and he bows.

“Thank you, luv,” he says.

“You know it’s too big for you?” she asks, and he says, “I’ll grow into it.”

“There’s no way you’re going to keep that coat for however long it takes you to grow into it,” Zatanna says, and John says, “We shall see,” in a tone of voice that implies that he’s going to do it just to spite her.

They leave the alley, John leading the way, and Zatanna looks at the coat and she thinks of it fitting him, and she doesn’t think she’d mind if he did, indeed, wear that coat forever. As soon as it got a good washing first, of course.
