Day 6: Draping on the Stand A tool which is key to my work is a stand or mannequin. After the first sampling sessions have happened , draping on the stand is a great opportunity to see what the knitted fabric will look like on the body. As my yarns are all plant based, the fabrics tend to be soft and follow the shape of one’s silhouette . However , it is very important for me to make sure that the garments also have a neutral feel to them so that they can easily been worn by anyone . When draping on the stand, I particularly look at: ♾scale of motif🔘 ♾Stitching and/or jacquard placement ♾ Collar designs ♾ Finishing details🧵 ♾ Would I wear it? Would the people around me wear it?🧐 This is a great opportunity to visualise the final product ! Walking through a nearly desert beach and stumbling across seaweed weaved together, I came across this beauty. Day 8: the linking machine🔗 A tool which is key to my work is the linking machine. We knit each garment’s piece to the exact shape on the actual machine. This means that body, sleeves and collars are knitted without wasting precious plant-based fibres in the sampling and production processes. Once all the parts have been knitted , they are steamed and then passed over to the linking machine. Linking is an art in itself, I remember doing the linking for my final collections at @ntuart and taking days only to link up one garment!
