I caught this magnificent frigatebird chick in the middle of an absolutely enormous yawn but he somehow looks even more ridiculous with his mouth closed
Another Spondylus shell ornament, Culture Jama-Coaque, Ecuadorian North Coast 500 BCE - 1530 CE, w3.4 x h6.9 cm. Museo Casa del Alabado / INPC. Listed as a "zoomorphic ornament," but the first thing it made me think of was a male Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens), a native species…
"Massive seabird of warm tropical oceans and coastlines. Overall black with extremely long, deeply forked tail and angular wings. Male completely black with inflatable red pouch on throat (not seen away from breeding colonies) and bluish eyering. Adult female has white chest and golden bar on shoulder. Young birds have white head and breast. Often soars for long periods and flies with slow wingbeats. Steals food from other seabirds. Surprisingly acrobatic during aerial chases despite its large size."
I am once again only kinda relating the prompt to the post. I made my whale machine more shiny, but not necessarily more gaudy lol. After chatting with my marine biologist friend @finrays I redesigned my "Tallneck of the Sea" whale machine a little! Now known as the Deepsinger.
The barnacle removing machine is called the Scrubber, and the Magnificent Frigatebird is called a Pingwing.
There are rumors about a large tentacled machine that is sometimes carried to the surface in the mouths of Deepsingers…. But few have seen them.
This Magnificent Frigatebird was rescued down wrapped in fishing line in offshore waters near the South Channel by boaters. The line was removed and the Frigatebird is being evaluated/treated for injuries in our clinic. Thanks to all involved in the rescue!
friends were talking sonic ocs and i decided to make a guy about it. hes a pirate frigatebird and i dont know his name. i dont go to sonic but im having some fun with it
A male magnificent frigatebird (easily identified by the bright red gular pouch) offers a stick in an attempt to woo a taken female (the bird with the black head and red ring around the eye). The female's mate is clearly annoyed!
The white and black bird with the tan chest that looks on is a juvenile of this species, potentially the pair's chick from a previous nesting!
Thinking about birds and symbolism and the tattoo on Izzy's neck.
As far as birds that never touch the ground go, the Magnificent Frigatebird will get you pretty close. They spend most of their lives in the air, and actually can't touch the water either: their feathers don't have the right kind of waterproof oil.
They hunt primarily by engaging in piracy: harassing other birds until they drop the fish they've caught. Ironically they also have the deep, forked tail like Izzy's tattoo.
