EXPLANATIONS:
- Sea bird that eats fish and squid but can't swim; their feathers aren't waterproof and their legs are too short to paddle, but they do have webbed feet; they have a 7.5 ft wingspan (larger than a bald eagle) and the largest wing to body size ratio of any bird; can withstand near-hurricane force winds; have a bright red throat pouch that males inflate (inflation can take up to 20 min) during mating displays (they mate every other year); they steal regurgitated food from other birds by holding the other bird's tail in their (the fregata magnificens) beak or feet and shaking them (in mid-air!) until they throw it up; steals and eats eggs and chicks from other birds; their chicks stay in the nest for 167 days after hatching and are fed by their mothers until they are one year old

I’m a bit behind, but here is a batch of Marchirps from earlier in the month. Mostly silly things again, plus a semi-serious cockatoo sketch and a pigeon sprite I made for a video game assignment.

Weird Birds
all birds are weird cause they're reptiles but here are especially weird birds

Hooded Pitohui - Pitohui dichrous LC
poisonous bird, scientist confirmed if you touch it then touch your fingers to your mouth it makes your mouth numb, important science

American Dipper - Cinclus mexicanus LC
looks like normal bird, lies only genus of semi-aquatic song bird flies through water

Bearded Vulture/Lammergeier - Gypaetus barbatus NT
primarily eats bones, generally terrifying

Magnificent Frigatebird - Fregata magnificens LC
thinks it's a frog, speaks for itself

Resplendent Quetzal - Pharomachrus mocinno NT
actually an aztec god will sing again when land if free from Spanish rule

American Woodcock - Scolopax minor LC
actual nicknames include memebird, timberdoodle, mudbat bogsucker, night partridge and labrador twister, slowest flying bird 8km/h 5mph

Oilbird/Guácharo - Steatornis caripensis LC
birds that decided to become bats, live in colonies in caves, nocturnal, uses echolocation to navigate, eats fruit, who wore it better

Shoebill - Balaeniceps rex VU
actual dinosaur related to pelicans, carnivorous, makes terrifying clacking noises with beak

Hoatzin - Opisthocomus hoazin LC
stink bird, capable of fermentation digestion similar to ruminant mammals, chicks have two functional claws on wings
Maleo - Macrocephalon maleo CR EN

deadbeat parents bury their eggs in sand and leave, chicks digs it's way out dries off and within hours can fly

Bird Spotlight!: Magnificent Frigatebird ("man-o-war bird")
These guys are like BIRD PIRATES?!!! ?!??! Basically, they'll grab and hold onto a smaller bird until it regurgitates the fish it caught. Once it does, the frigatebird releases it, and catches the fish midair as it falls!! Video of this in action below! (if you just want to see the moment of the fish falling, skip to 2:15!) (young frigatebirds will practice this with each other with sticks!! so cute omgggg) (this is not the only way they gather food, but it is by far the most interesting way X3)
youtube
Another cool fact, the frigatebird is a seabird, but it can't swim. It's feathers aren't waterproof. BUT SOMEHOW, these birds stay out at sea for up to 2 months... how??????
well!! scientists have long theorized that birds can sleep during flight,, and a study with the frigatebird (from less than a decade ago!!!) is actually what proved this theory!!!! These birds slept for 10 second intervals while flying (for a total of about 45 minutes a day). it’s VERY little sleep (they get 12ish hours on land)
Finally, they're one of the very few sea birds that have major male/female differences (notice the big red thing,, that's the male). They can inflate this,, its part of the mating process (but also can be used to regulate body temp,, kinda cool)
#tw vomit#<- kinda#to be safe :]#ask to tag#bird#biology#ornithology#frigatebird#magnificent frigatebird#okbird#<- tag to filter if you dont wanna see this X3#Youtube#there’s a little bit more abt them i found interesting so lmk if you wanna hear abt that#the crazy ‘hunting’ strat and the study are the big things tho !!!!! :D#okramblings

Common Swift
Common Swift
- Apus Apus lives in the air. Apus Apus sleeps in the air. Mates in the air. They spend 10 months airborne in their non-breeding period. THAT'S REALLY FUCKED. 10 months, that's an entire human pregnancy + some time. Ultimately there are surely more fucked up birds but it's something to consider for sure!

BOTD: Magnificent Frigatebird
Photo: Peter Swaine
"Massive seabird of warm tropical oceans and coastlines. Overall black with extremely long, deeply forked tail and angular wings. Male completely black with inflatable red pouch on throat (not seen away from breeding colonies) and bluish eyering. Adult female has white chest and golden bar on shoulder. Young birds have white head and breast. Often soars for long periods and flies with slow wingbeats. Steals food from other seabirds. Surprisingly acrobatic during aerial chases despite its large size."
