I have a tiny little holiday tradition of my own - watching a concert 🎶 on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, I’m watching a giant documentary about these guys recording “Let It Be” live, which is wonderful and sad 😢 at the same time… Anyway, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year 🎆 and recommend one of my favourite books about music - “The Forensic Records Society” 💿 It’s about two friends who start a club for people into vinyl in a local pub. By and by, the club goes through all the stages characteristic for development of a society (tyranny, schism, appearance of a new prophet). A month or so back I requested a copy of The Forensic Records Society from @bloomsburypublishing to read as it sounded really cool! I finished it a couple of days ago and it did not disappoint! It is only a short book (with no breaks for chapters etc) but I really, really enjoyed it! . Two blokes decide to set up a regular Monday night catch-up in the back room of their local pub, the Half Moon. The idea is for each member to bring three records and for the group to listen to them, forensically (and silently). . However, the pint-drinking/ beard-stroking idyll (strictly imposed by the leader James) comes to an end when a rival society establishes themselves on a Tuesday night, in the same room, but with fundamentally different values. . “Was it really beyond human capacity, I pondered, to create a society which didn’t ultimately disintegrate through internal strife? Or collapse under the weight of its own laws? Or suffer damaging rivalries with other societies?” . It is a really interesting book - think Animal Farm, with music! I really enjoyed how it was just blokes being blokes. They didn’t need to go on any great journeys to improve themselves, its just the music, and the rivals.
