aquifolium is the state flower of Oregon. It was introduced horticulturally from the Pacific Northwest into Europe in 1822 and is considered an unfamiliar invasive species there, having been particularly successful in central and eastern Germany. Mahonia aquifolium is native to western North America from British Columbia to California and eastward to Idaho and Montana. The flowers provide a food source for insect pollinators and berries are eaten by small birds.Mahonia aquifolium commonly known as Oregon-grape is a species of flowering plant of barberry family (Berberidaceae). Plants containing berberine should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The flowers are edible and can be used to make a lemonade drink or sorbet.Ĭare should be taken when collecting the berries, because the shrub has big thorns. Oregon Grape is also ideal for cordial, as the cooked berries taste a bit like Blackcurrant. The small purple berries of Mahonia spp are quite tart and contain large seeds, but are suitable to make jam, jelly and sauce. Culinary uses and recipes with Oregon Grape

Oregon grape is also used to treat chronic inflammatory or infected skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis or acne. It also may improve cholesterol levels and it’s used for the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Though there is ongoing research, berberine contained in the roots and stems seems to slightly reduce blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. These flowers are followed by racemes of small purple berries covered in a light bloom, which are edible. This evergreen bush is popular in urban parks and council gardens, because it’s a low-maintenance shrub with perfumed yellow flowers that blooms during the winter, when nothing else is flowering. Oregon Holly Grape is not closely related to either holly or grape, though the leaves do look like a holly. The berries of Holly are bright red in colour unlike the purple berries of Oregon Grape. Holly ( Ilex sp.) leaves look similar but the growth habit is different. The berries hang in clusters too, and are purplish-black, covered in a light bloom. The flowers are small and bright yellow in colour, hanging in dense clusters above the leaves. The leaves are pinnate and each leaf is made up of spiny leaflets, looking just like a holly leaf. Oregon Grape is an evergreen shrub growing up to 1 m. (Season is quite variable depending on species and location). When to find Oregon Grapeįlowers early winter to mid spring and berries mid summer to early autumn. Parks, gardens, hedges and occasionally spread to woodlands. Oregon grape is a native plant in the North American West. Oregon Grape, Oregon Holly, Oregon Holly Grape, Hollyleaved Barberry, Mountain Grape, Mahonia Botanical name

Here’s some intuitive magic that’s got me happy.
It’s Mahonia cordial. Or it will be in a month. I’ve been assembling plant allies.
I get a feeling, I reach out... it’s been lovely. And this full moon (which I was only just aware of before I got curious where the moon was in all this), I got the feeling what I needed to do.
It’s got mahonia berries (blanched & crushed), quite a bit of lovage that got bent and was not looking so good, the rose sugar I made from the flowers my laser boyfriend gave me from his garden, and then a few hours later I realized I had impulse bought lavender and fennel seeds in the last few weeks and they probably need to go in too, just a bit.
My impression is that this is a broken heart potion that is especially focused on reinforcement of a sense of security that comes with healthy boundaries. I’ve had synchro relating to boundaries since I had this project in mind. I got divorced in the last year so I think it’s needed and timely. And then it’s topped off with alcohol. I shake it each morning and whenever I feel like it, and I think I’ll open it up and strain it in a month. At that point I’ll do what I feel but I anticipate a few drops daily on my tongue or a squirt in my morning seltzer. Honestly I credit my guides, including my lovage plant for this one and rather than keeping an intent in mind, I try to bring to mind my relationship with and the vibe of the ingredients and let them focus the potential. Makes me think maybe my lovage plant is approaching the point of being a real familiar.
