Save Our Seeds

Welp, my presentation about my public edibles initiative for Pecha Kucha went off seamlessly. I met my editor’s deadline for my scathing article on screens, and had a fun weekend floating and dancing with hubs and kittens. Certainly a boss winning type weekend.

But then Lula and I read this book about a little seed trying to eek out an existence. And the compassion I felt for this seed, reminded me of how I feel about eating animals. I love to think about me guzzling lightly salted sunflower seeds. But aren't I just extinguishing another life? 

You can’t say no to this. And this then begs the question-- where does one draw the line in terms of taking a life to feed another? NOW WHAT!

Infernal confusion and questioning around this issue, so let me state what I am clear about so as to be regretful only of the things that I am not.

-wearing an animal is fucked up

-eating a factory farmed animal is also fucked up

-supporting my local farmer who does the most ethical things is good, but she still kills animals for consumption

-my local farmer’s meat is tasty 

-my local farmer’s eggs are the best and I make great quiches

-I am an apex predator

-not necessary to eat other animals to stay alive

-I do need to eat to keep living

-bring back responsible pescatarianism? 

-eating bugs is marginally morally on par with being a vegetarian

I honestly don’t know what to do. And I also wish that an ant did not friggin appear on my laptop just now to underscore the fact that the universe is listening because now I feel as if I am under pressure here. Ostensibly, everything we do matters. Please queue the song by Queen now.

Apology Day Nineteen- It pains me to consume yet this is the way of life somehow. I am sorry Ria that you have to kill to live; albeit, we won’t contribute to suffering along the way.

They now claim to be selling fur that is ‘responsibly sourced’ and with ‘A high standard of rearing conditions for the animals.’ We need to tell @houseoffraser that their fur policy is invalid because there is NO such thing as high standards in the fur trade! Turf The Green

When I was in Parochial school back in Brooklyn, my best friend and I would fantasize about being married to Simon Le Bon and John Taylor respectively. When we parted, we kept in touch for many years. Mainly, I would write her letters letting her know how much I missed her. Then like most childhood friends, lost touch, but reconnected many years later via fb.

She moved on to being the Editor in Chief of a National publication that describes itself as, “The trusted source of privileged information, taste, elegant living - an irreplaceable guide to the very best the world has to offer.” Not surprising. She was always classy and wicked talented. So when our school was having its 50 year anniversary gala at the Brooklyn Bridge Piers, she invited me to stay at her Madison Ave. apt. I was so excited and of course I said yes.

Problem is, my son was still little and my daughter even littler, so I was only granted a 36 hour pass. Here is how I handled that one.

Met with friends from Columbus who were also in town there and had drinks in a gay dive bar and walked around the Village and they bought me a very expensive dress. Met with my Manhattan fried who is a Taft descendent and from a long line of New Yorkers. He loves to drive his convertible around the city and remark on all of NYC intricacies. One of my top favorite things to do when I am back home. Went to this gala thing. Had brunch and dinner at fun restaurants, and something else I can’t remember very well because I was in beast mode. 

My point-- I barely spent time with my friend, I even bailed on the gala because I was bored to tears and not because (ok maybe) people kept calling me the “basketball star”, and they were all so very image conscious that it hurt. Not to mention the fur. Ugh. 

I have been feeling really badly about that, but I realize that I have this sickness of restlessness and better grass on the other side thinking. At every music festival I go to, I want to go to the next thing after about 40 mins. I am sure it is frustrating to my husband. I bail on things fairly quickly because I need to move on. I am not sure that that is something I can change. And it has turned off a number of folks over time. But I can’t live life for others. So those who don’t mind it too much will accept it. 

For example, there is a monthly speakeasy party that goes on right down the street from me. When I saw them out there, I walked over to the place introduced myself and said, “I have been seeing this party and I wanted to know who is having all this fun without me and here I am!” I was welcomed with open arms and I casually arrive and go for my cameo there almost every month. We do shots, catch up and I unceremoniously dip out. My kind of people!

I have made one modification; I longer think, “Monogamy is for ugly people.” 

Apology Day Ten- It may not be polite, it might even be rude but you just can’t sit still for long. I’m sorry Ria that you are easily bored, but it is worse to live a boring life for others.
