We are definitely in need of some more talent, so whether you're a first-timer digital artist, a podficcer, a banner maker, moodboard collagist, or any other creator under the sun, please think about signing up so that all of our wonderful writers have something unique to take away from this experience.

The Shadowhunters Mini Bang 2025 is a collaborative fandom event that combines fandom talents! Writers create never-before-seen fic that artists will find inspiration in and together, they create magic.

You must be a part of the Malec Discord Server to participate. You must be over 16 to participate and over 18 to create explicit works.

The schedule as it currently stands is below. This schedule is subject to change depending on the situation. You will be notified of any changes.

May 7: Artist sign-ups close May 9-11: Art claims May 12: Assignments June 18: Artist check-in 1 July 30: All check-in 2 August 30: Final drafts and art due September 6-7: Posting

Rules:

You must be part of the Malec Discord Server to participate in this event. 

You must be over 16 to participate and over 18 to create explicit works.

All content must be brand new and never before posted to any forum. All content must be polished and finished. No unfinished works or WIPs that you plan on continuing later will be accepted. Works that are added chapters/continuations of previously published works are not permitted unless they can be viewed/read as a standalone. 

Plagiarism and AI content will not be tolerated. All content must be the creator’s own original work. 

Writers are asked not to talk about their projects until after claims with anyone participating in this event to keep beta/artist claims fair. 

All content must focus on Shadowhunters universe characters (show and/or book verse.)

All Shadowhunters characters/ships are accepted. OCs/borrowed characters will be accepted as minor characters. 

AUs and crossovers are accepted as long as the Shadowhunters characters are the main focus.

Content of any rating and subject matter is accepted, but participants must make sure to include any relevant warnings throughout the entire event (I.e. warnings for betas/artists during matching) and properly tag their work. 

No blatantly hateful content of any kind. 

All participants are required to check-in with moderators at least twice throughout the event. All check-ins are integral to continuing to participate in the event. 

All participants must communicate readily with their assigned partners and vice versa. This is a collaborative effort. All participants must be open to the ideas of their partners. 

When you sign up for this event you are making a commitment to yourself, the mods, and your future partners to meet all posted deadlines and to communicate with the mods and your partners regularly. Please don’t sign up for the event unless you are confident that you can fully participate and be honest with yourself about what you can commit to. 

Please respect the mods and anyone working with you throughout this event. Certain complaints may disqualify you from this event. 

The password to make sure you’ve read/understand all rules is SHMB25. Remember this when you sign up. 

Artist Specific Rules:

Accepted forms of submitted art include: 

- Digital/physical art: 1 piece, 500px minimum

- Photomanipulation: 1 piece with significant editing

- Gifsets: 4 gifs (without watermarks)

- Moodboards: 6 graphics

- Video: 1 minute

- Playlists: 10 songs and a graphic

If you are inspired by your writer to create a piece of art not on this list, please feel free to reach out to a mod.  

Artists are expected to be respectful of writer’s ideas. Writers will make all final decisions on their fics, but this event is a collaborative effort.

Artists will need somewhere to host their work so that it can be embedded on AO3. Examples will be provided closer to posting date, if needed.

I wanted to be creative with this prompt and became obsessed with this audio so why not combine the two? I make Alec "the gun" aka the one both Maryse and Magnus want to reach for, influencing him to their side (Maryse also symbolizes the Clave and its rule-abiding stifling society and Magnus is the opposite of that).

It's fun to notice and put all these Maryse-Magnus parallel, especially in terms of the way they act with Alec. And Alec is the gun they want and rely on, seeking him for comfort. Maryse and Magnus differ in all sorts of things, but they both love Alec, albeit in different ways

"What are you glaring at?"

Magnus looks over at the sound of Alexander's voice, shocked out of the focus he previously had on Lorenzo Rey, who he wasn't even sure he wanted at his wedding even after the change of heart and bit of redemption he earned himself.

"What?" Magnus asks, both to stall and in the hopes that, perhaps, they could simply change the subject. He shifts to focus himself fully on Alexander - on his husband. As it should be, honestly. He doesn't need to be worrying about anyone else today, least of all a warlock he barely likes and a Shadowhunter he barely knows.

"You look a little too upset for someone on their wedding day. You're going to give me a complex if you don't tell me what's on your mind," Alec says.

"If you must know," Magnus starts, turning his gaze back in the direction of Lorenzo and Andrew at a small table in the corner, laughing in that way you do when you're going to really impress someone over something he's sure barely warrants it, and- okay, he's getting bitter and judgmental again and he really needs to stop it.

"What am I looking at?" Alec asks, glancing around the room in the direction of Magnus' gaze. "I don't see- oh."

Magnus feels vindicated in the fact that Alexander's voice drops in confusion, brows furrowing and a small frown taking over his features. At least they're on the same page about this.

"They're flirting. What's that about?" Magnus asks.

"Yeah, I'll admit, I hardly thought Lorenzo would be Andrew's type," Alec says slowly.

"Andrew can do better," Magnus states simply.

"Magnus..." Alec starts carefully, in that tone that implies he's choosing his next words carefully. Magnus can already sense what's coming next.

"I'm just saying. One decent decision does not undo centuries of being a raging jackass," Magnus says, before Alexander gets a chance to defend Lorenzo.

"I know," Alec agrees. "And I'm not saying it does. But I am saying that Andrew doesn't have a history with Lorenzo. All he knows is the man who realized he made a mistake, and did whatever he could to fix it - including risking his life to go to Edom with a bunch of people he barely knew, putting his life in our hands."

Magnus made a 'humph' sound at that, but couldn't disagree.

"He helped me save your life, Magnus. At the very least, I owe him a chance to start fresh with someone. Isn't that what you got, with me?"

"You knew plenty about me," Magnus argued. "But," he conceded. "I see your point. And I suppose he's been... tolerable recently."

Alexander smiled at that.

"But I'm still saying that maybe cupid's arrow could use a new accuracy rune," Magnus added, half-under his breath but just loud enough for Alec to hear, barking out a laugh.

"Maybe you're right. I guess time will tell," Alec said, glancing back over to where Lorenzo was currently holding his hand out for Andrew to take before leading them both onto the dance floor.

"Perhaps we should join them on the dance floor," Alec suggested, reaching his own hand out to Magnus. "You know, just to keep a closer eye on things."

Magnus shook his head, taking his husband's hand in his own. "No, you're right. I'm staying out of it. Besides, I have more important things to focus my attention on."

Magnus leaned in to kiss Alexander, gentle and lingering several seconds before reluctantly pulling back. "I believe I owe my husband a dance."

After rehab, he decides to return to New York, where his sister keeps inviting him to hang out with her, Jace and their friends.

After weeks of him repeatedly declining, Izzy plans a night out in Winter Village at Bryant Park, knowing full well how much he's always loved it there.

He agrees and meets Izzy's boss and good friend Magnus Bane.

They hit it off right away.

Magnus is sleeping when Alec hurries into the guest room with a bottle of water from Lake Lyn. It’s a testament to how sick he truly is, Alec thinks grimly, that he could sleep so easily in an Institute. He’s slept in a few over his many years, Alec knows, though recently always with Alec at his side, and sleep was hard won for Magnus even then. It’s gotten better over the last few years, but even so.

“Baby,” Alec says, sitting on the edge of the bed and running his fingers through Magnus’s hair. It’s free of any gel or spray, loose and soft and a little sweaty. His skin feels clammy, and Alec’s heart seizes in his chest as he clutches the bottle a little tighter. “Magnus, can you wake up for me?”

Magnus’s eyes didn’t open, but he made a noise of protest.

“Just for a minute, baby,” Alec says. “It’s important. Just for a minute, and then you can sleep again, okay?” He leans down to kiss Magnus’s forehead. “Please, Magnus.”

This time, Magnus blinks, his cat eyes half-lidded and hazy as he peers up at Alec. “Alec?”

Writers must write a minimum of 4,000 words to participate in this event. There is no maximum limit but please keep in mind the time constraints of this event.

Writers are expected to be respectful of the artists’ ideas, likes, dislikes, and rating preferences. Writers are expected to be in contact with their artist about specific changes/ideas they might have along the way.

Writers must base their fics off of the art prompt they claim. For example, if the art features Clary as an art student, the fic should not be Malec-focused with Clary attending an art school in the background. The fic should be primarily about Clary being an art student.

Writers signing up for the event may not get their first pick when assigned art. Please be mindful of this! Ending your commitment because of this is not permitted and if you feel this will be an issue you should not sign up for the event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to be a part of the Malec Discord Server to participate? All continuous communication for this event will be provided in a special category in the MDS. This includes all announcements, reminders, and ongoing requirements. If you want to join but don’t want access to the entire server, you can be given a Discord role based on your role in this event so the rest of the server is not accessible to you.

Sign-ups haven’t closed yet but I’m so excited about this challenge and really want to begin. Can I start working now? Artists are free to begin their piece(s) as soon as they read through the rules and requirements! Writers, unfortunately, will have to until they are matched with an artist, but we appreciate your enthusiasm for this event!

Can I sign up for more than one role? Absolutely. Many bang participants sign up for multiple roles as long as you believe you can complete all pieces before the assigned deadline(s).

What if someone doesn’t have a match? In the event that the art prompts outnumber writers, we will do several rounds of claiming so that every art prompt has a writer. If writers outnumber art prompts, we will open up the art prompts so that more than one writer is assigned to the same artist or ask artists if they are interested in completing more art. Every artist will be matched with at least one writer and vice versa.

What if I’m matched with an art prompt/partner I don’t want? The Mods (and most artists) would never want someone to create something that makes them uncomfortable, so if there is an art prompt that you don’t want to be matched with, don’t choose it during claims.

If you have any legitimate concerns about a partner (i.e. harassment or rude behavior), we ask that you please notify the Mods. Intervention by the Mods will not occur simply because of disliking story/design choices or the content they’re producing. Mods will not allow any rude or dismissive behavior by any participant. Please just be nice and work hard to help each other.

Can I repost old art or reuse/add to a WIP? No, All content must be brand new and never before posted to any forum. More on this in the rules.

What if I’m not around when claims occur? Claims will span three days and will not be on a first come first serve basis so as long as you are able to submit your interest in those three days, chances are you’ll be matched with one of your top three choices.

What if I’m not positive I can finish within the deadline? When you sign up for this event you are making a commitment to yourself, the Mods, and your future partner(s) to meet all posted deadlines and to communicate with the Mods and your partner(s) regularly. Please don’t sign up for the event unless you are confident that you can fully participate and be honest with yourself about what you can commit to.

What if something comes up after claims and I need to drop out? We understand that dropping out due to unforeseen circumstances can and will happen. We are/have always been very understanding when this happens and are willing to work with you. The quicker you let us know, the more options the Mods have.
