Prompt#29: Lollygag and Spitzenburg

((Today’s prompts come from @tehmi-ffxiv & @mamanewt - thanks! I considered doing a makeup one for last weeks extra credit but I’m tired today.))

The elder had been very specific when they sent Ghemala out that morning, there was no denying that! Encroaching bandits had begun to sniff about some of the older ruins in the northeast, dilapidated husks all of them, and it would not do to simply let them come and go as they please. Especially so when they had dragged along some bedraggled fellow who had taken to restoring one of the more intact ones. There were already enough incidents with the neighboring Ooja tribe picking at the edges of their hunting grounds, but at least that insufferable lot were distant relatives! These newer arrivals could lay no such claim.

It was something of a surprise when Mehhzi requested she take a jaunt out in that direction, though the confused expression she must have been wearing had encouraged a more reasonable explanation. Khenma was doing the scouting, she needed only hear the latest report and return before the sky began to lighten. That sounded like a far better use of her skills than skulking through shadowy treetops! A frown crossed her face at the thought. It wasn't as if she were not going to be skulking about, simply doing so further away than her silent sister. Ghemala's enthusiasm began to wither away when she came to realize the lyre hanging from her side would see no practice that evening.

With that went the sole source of her entertainment for the night, a huff escaping the young huntress' lips as she reconsidered the choice to leave home so early that evening. Boredom was the bane of her existence, second only to responsibility. As a kit the solution seemed simple enough - if she proved herself to be completely reliable then surely they would give her far more interesting things to occupy her time! Truly an uphill battle with a mind taken to flights of fancy when some dull task was laid before her. So, of course, one had to try the alternative as Ghemala did the best job she could of being so utterly unreliable that only the most necessary of tasks were laid before her.

A fine theory, but grandmothers have a more active approach to poor performance. Further training and testing done to eat up even greater stretches of time! In the interest of fairness, the Keeper did need to concede that limiting her leisure time was not the sole intent. Merely an unhappy side effect. Though in either case it was not to her taste.

The middle road was a finer fit in either case both in terms of the miqo'te's talents as well as her preferences. Competent enough, save for her atrocious bowmanship, to not have aunts and sisters worrying every time a task was assigned, but not so accomplished as to leap to mind should an urgent matter arise. Thus, she found herself in the Shroud in the dark of night waiting for her more accomplished sister to return to their meeting spot with what details they had learned.

Sniffing the air, Ghemala leapt through the boughs until coming across the sweet scented tree they had chosen to convene at. Or at least she had, Khenma was never much for discussing and what better place to loiter? Finding a comfortable spot, the young musician laid back against the trunk and plucked an apple from the branch above her. A quick sniff was enough to tell the crisp fruit was ripened, before she took a satisfied crunch. It was a moment thoughtfully chewing that bite before the Keeper considered sounds like that may well not be the smartest thing to make while outsiders were invading their territory.

To her credit, she did at least attempt to take quieter bites as she lounged in the tree - devouring apples and crafting lines of poetry in her mind beneath the dim light of the waning moon. It would be a long wait and Ghemala would put forth the least amount of effort she could for the whole length of it.
