• In the final part, you could see my computer desk overhauled, with the exception my desktop tower. The monitor and the extension sockets were changed to a different brand (Pensonic and Cherry Home). 🖥️🔌⚡And do you remember from my "Part 4" when the old AOC monitor had a spark sound by the time I turned on my custom PC? Well, it's dead. I wish I could fix it, but I don't have the tools to detect the old monitor's problem. 😞 As a result, my HDMI to VGA converter is now useless... 😥 Damn, I wasted my ₱250 fund. But it's okay, I could sell it at the same price, anyway. 🤷‍♀️ Nevertheless, after a long day of troubleshooting and tips on how our PC works, I turned on my PC by pressing a single power button, and my PC was brought back to life by a blinking red light! 😃 Now I turned on my new monitor to see if it works, and it does! My installation was a success! And man, I missed you so much, custom PC! It's been 7 months of being inactive and now you're alive! 🖥️😄 Then, I had to check the interior of my PC by removing the cover, and you could see they all functioning in all light up from the new PC power supply to the new GPU card! Uh yeah, I've also mentioned that our telephone and router were changed, with the latter changed from a four-antenna router to a two-antenna router which is a downgrade for our family. 😒 However, my new monitor's position was too low causing my head to tilt down and it was uncomfortable to view. So, 5 days later, my parents decided to add some floor tiles as an improvised stand booster of sorts, and I put two LEGO blocks on each leg for a little angle to make it a proper view 🧱➡️🖥️, since my 22-inch TV monitor (from Pensonic) wasn't designed for angle screen adjustment, unlike the actual computer monitors. You noticed I removed two universal adapter switches, but I'll re-attach these, soon. 🔌⚡ Another thing was my RGB LED light bulb was replaced with a white LED light bulb because my RGB light was dead, since September of 2023. But, I've bought a better one, so I'll reveal it, coming soon. Nevertheless, the 22-inch TV monitor includes a TV remote which is more convenient than pressing buttons at the back (any sides) of the monitor/television. Okay so, it's not NEW-NEW or as in literally "Brand New", but rather my big brother gave it to me. Plus, my dad won the prize from a raffle. So, congrats Dad. 👨🖥️🥳 So, what's the culprit of being unable to turn on my custom PC? 🤔 Well, the "DDR4 RAM Memory sticks" that will soon be decommissioned, after a long years of usage. 😮 However, these two RAMS we're functioned as usual with only my elbow grease and a luck. It looks like I'll invest in brand-new RAM memory sticks when these old RAM ones finally giving out, someday. 💵

• Here are some of the photos that I took, and I'm happy to report that my PC is still working after this moment. 🖥️🖱️😁 There are a few things that I want to address, as of February 2024. Like the 22-inch TV monitor had a few dead pixel lines when I view in black/dark mode, and the BIOS intro screen was skipped when I turned on the TV monitor first then the PC. The latter will work it out, soon after I browse and watch the tutorials via the web. 🌐🤔 But hey, on the bright side, my paper dolls we're happy to see my PC finally come back to life and they seem to be enjoying themselves from the gorgeous lights from the interior. 😄💡🖥️ Plus, they liked the new look, and with the 22-inch screen they could enjoy watching videos, or heck maybe re-visiting their "Chowder" episodes in 1080p High-Definition! Right, you two? Hehe 😁 Yes, I forgot to mention, that this TV monitor handles 1080p in a standard 60Hz rather than higher 120 or 160Hz.😅 Yeah, I'm okay with that. 😊👍

IMPORTANT NOTE: Pls, don't mind about that 1.5 litre coke. Its a improvised mouse trap. So, please don't mind that. ☝️😮

Final Overall:

• I'm so very happy to see my custom PC has risen like a Phoenix thanks to my two new PC parts that we've installed and some of my elbow grease 🖥️🔧, except my HDMI to VGA converter. And you know, there was a VGA port built-in at the back of the 22-inch TV monitor, though. Then I thought to myself, Nah... I would rather use an HDMI cable that we're lying around and use it instead of the VGA + converter combined. After all, the HDMI cable/port had already a superior approach when it comes to quality screen over the old-style VGA cable/port. Aside from the BIOS problem, as I said in my video, this isn't my final PC desktop look because there are some things or parts that I want to replace, like my two DDR4 RAM Memory Sticks (currently: PROVISION DDR4 8GB RAM (2x4GB) with 2133Mhz speed) will soon be decommissioned, and the entire PC desktop case which has to be replaced for a newer design look. But for now, "Functional" is important to me over appearance, and soon I'll take care of the latter. 😊🖥️ But right now, I'm enjoying reuniting my custom PC with blazing reading speeds from an NVMe card, and a serious GPU Card limit. More PC parts will be installed soon. 😉

AUGUST SMASH DIRECT THOUGHTS

SIMON & RICHTER BELMONT

Simon was technically leaked twice. He was among a seemingly credible leak that mentioned Ridley, Snake, Ice Climbers, and no cuts. (Though I dodged it since I know it was only one night before the reveal so I still didn’t know for sure if Simon was in until the reveal). But either way this ia amazing, Castlevania is certainly a worthy inclusion in Smash on the likes of all the other NES franchises represented. But what wasn’t leaked was Richter as an echo. Richter was the protagonist of Rondo of Blood. Which wasn’t exactly on a Nintendo console unless you count Dracula X in the 90s. Richter was also in Symphony of the Night which has never been on a Nintendo console. But he’s famous even in the meme-wise cause he’s the one who’s there for when Dracula yells “WHAT IS A MAN?!” in the hammy voice acting that was normal for this era of gaming. He was also an unlockable character on a DS game but otherwise Richter isn’t too Nintendo famous. But he is the most popular Belmont in Japan. They just needed to still feature the most iconic Belmont as the main inclusion still. I’m fine with Richter though. Though when I play as either of them, I’m playing Simon more for sure.

P.S. The trailer was great, not just for the super cool footage of Simon. But it was hilarious seeing Luigi running scared. Luigi getting killed by Death has quickly even become the latest Smash Bros. meme

DRACULA’S CASTLE STAGE & BOSS

The stage itself looks fittingly creepy and will have some pretty amazing music I imagine too. And Dracula being a boss is great as well. I kinda wish they’d have him yell “WHAT IS A MAN?!” when he came in. But I imagine that would be a bit much and ruin the moment. But it’d be hilarious to me.

NEW ECHO FIGHTERS: CHROM AND DARK SAMUS

When Chrom showed up I actually smiled. Now I’m no Fire Emblem fan. And yes it’s another sword user, and a fourth Marth-like character. But given how humiliated Chrom was in Smash 4. Not just in the Robin/Lucina trailer but the memes it caused in the Smash fandom that made a once proud and potential newcomer into a butt monkey on nearly the same level as Ridley with the TOO BIG memes. Even for characters I don’t necessarily want to see I would not want that fate to happen to their fans. It’s just brutal. Though at the very least Chrom seems to borrow a few moves from Ike as well. I even thought at first he was an echo of Ike before I checked later that it was actually for Roy. So I’m pretty happy Chrom actually got to have his chance. I am also certainly using Chrom more then I ever will for Roy.

It’s no doubt though that Dark Samus stole the show for echoes. She’s already my favorite echo so far and she has some slick-looking animations that may make her more worth playing then regular power-suit Samus. Metroid fans can be happy that they’ve doubled up the reps. And both of them are well-deserved additions.

ECHOES CAN EITHER BE STACKED OR SEPARATED ON THE CSS

This also may lessen the disgust that people had with Dark Pit’s inclusion back in Smash 4. Just put the echoes in the corner of the character they’re echoing. I’m certainly going to keep them stacked myself. I think the CSS will also look cleaner that way

ALL CHARACTERS WILL BE REVEALED BEFORE LAUNCH

In other words, Sakurai has had it with those final roster leaks only weeks/days before release. Base Game speculation’s days are numbered until the final Smash Direct before release (Which would be likely in October or November). DLC speculation will immediately start after it. But we’re going to have our explosion of reactions to the final base roster done soon enough. Going to be some tense times until then

RETURNING STAGES

There’s so many returning stages! I’ll just say that Brinstar Depths, Magicant, and Fountain of Dreams are particularly ones I’m excited are back. Yoshi 64, Venom, Fourside, New Pork City, and Windy Hill are also nice to see.

CAPTAIN TOAD ON NEW DONK CITY

Welp, Captain Toad is looking very unlikely now. He could be DLC potentially since he isn’t a major stage hazard nor an Assist Trophy. But with a focus on longtime fan favorites and bringing every veteran back. Captain Toad just fell to the way side. It’s a shame, if the newcomers have been chosen in the same fashion Smash 4’s was. I think Captain Toad would of been a near certainty. This also unfortunately means that the last chance for a playable Toad has left us. Smash can’t include everyone, even with some characters like Ridley finally getting their chance, there are still some characters that would certainly count for Nintendo All-Stars that just couldn’t quite make it. This is probably one of the few disappointments I had with the direct. But I’ve dealt without a playable Toad for 4 games already, I can deal with another.

103 STAGES

Man that’s a lot of stages. Not to mention we won’t have to unlock any, they’ll be there from the start. Though Sakurai mentioning this does have me suspicious that this means there’s no more base game stages to add unless they are really trying to hide any newcomers that may come with stages. But it seems odd to point this out exactly if there were even just a few more stages in reality

STAGE HAZARD SWITCH

If you’re a competitive player or even just dislike stages where you’re fighting the stage more then your opponent then you absolutely should love this option. More viable stages and everything

STAGE MORPH

Now this is cool. And could definitely add to the Chaos of a match especially if you randomize both stages. Imagine you get a nice stage that would be competitively legal but then BAM you get something like Great Cave Offensive or Big Blue as the stage morph stage. Plenty of opportunity for hilarity there. Should be fun.

800+ TRACKS + 20 SONIC SONGS + STILL ONLY 2 FINAL FANTASY SONGS

Man this game’s soundtrack is going to be crazy! I am interested in what they have new for Sonic. There’s apparently only 20. If every Sonic song returned that was in either of the last two games. There’d be room for only 2. But if none of the Brawl ones return that leaves room for 6. And that’s not counting the possibility they cut some songs. Though perhaps another bummer from this is apparently Final Fantasy is still only getting 2 songs. So now we know it wasn’t just DLC budget getting in the way. Square is still being stingy.

STAMINA NOW A STANDARD MODE THAT CAN HAVE STOCKS

I’ve always kind of liked Stamina mode as something to be a change of pace of the regular gameplay. So it having it able to have stocks is quite cool

FINAL SMASH METER

Now this is really cool and may even open the possibility of some tournaments allowing Final Smashes in tourneys. I doubt it will be in really serious tournaments anyway, but could certainly allow for some hype in tourneys that do allow it.

SQUAD STRIKE

It’s a little vague at the moment. But Squad Strike might be the closest to something like the match in Smash Tour with a different character per stock? Though it could also just be a 1v1 match for each character. Also opens up for battles between teams.

OFFLINE TOURNEY RETURNS

You can have offline tournaments again like in Brawl and Melee! I sometimes just did CPU only tournaments with those which was kinda fun to watch. Just overall neat to have that back

SMASHDOWN

A cool option to have people not just use the same main they’re great with and also encourages people to diversify the characters they use.

TRAINING MODE UPGRADES

Training now has essentially a ruler to know your character’s launching power! Very cool and Competitive players will love it since it’s much easier to measure things.

CLASSIC MODE BACK TO MORE STANDARD

This is definitely a return to form for Classic mode. It’s kinda like SSB64’s but it’s a different set for each character that’s predetermined. No matter how many times you go through with one particular character it will be the same. While that may arguably sound like a step backward from the complete randomness of Melee’s classic mode. I actually love this a lot, the team can choose a particular set of opponents that make sense for that character to fight. Or even if it makes absolutely no sense, then it’s up to the fanbase to think of a reason for why they fight. Also what seems to be a thing is each character has a name for their run. Kirby had Gourmet Clash and Roy had A Journey of Swords. Bringing the same kind of intrigue that the Punch-Out Stage titles bring. I am excited to go through with every character like I always do.

NEW POKEMON

Alolan Exeggutor is hilarious, Abra will certainly provide some salt on some people, Mimikyu was a character often seen as possible to be the Gen 7 rep so might of been the first major reconfirmation not counting the Captain Toad one found later. Vulpix is a cute addition to the pokeball lineup. And Ditto is amazing. I almost kinda want the enemy team of this game to now be Ditto fighters.

NEW ASSISTS

Only 2 possibly major reconfirmations in the form of Zero and Shovel Knight. Zero was often seen as a possible 2nd Mega Man rep and Shovel Knight was considered the most likely if an Indie were to ever make it. It’s a miracle Shovel Knight even got this far though. Yacht Club games should be proud. Other then those though, Klaptrap looks annoying to deal with, Kapp’n seems funny just for the characters in the bus’ faces, Chef Kawasaki is the return of Kirby’s old Brawl final smash repurposed, Nikki’s a cute character to include, and the Majora’s Mask Moon is amazing as an assist trophy idea. It doesn’t even discriminate, even KOing the one it summoned. There was also the Rathalos assist trophy that turns out to also be a boss

ASHLEY DECONFIRMED

At the tail end of the Assist Trophy section was the sudden appearance of Ashley and not even with the name tag. Though they made her eyes red again. Ashley was considered one of the possible likely newcomers revealed this direct mainly because last week WarioWare Gold released. So it would be great timing.But it wasn’t to be. Sorry Ashley fans

MAIN MENU AND A MYSTERIOUS SPIRITS MODE

The menu looks more refined then Smash 4’s though I didn’t mind the Smash 4 menu as much as most people did. However most of the buzz is of course around the mode Sakurai had blurred out. Through some deblurring people found the mode will be called “Spirits” but that’s still too vague to know what it’ll be exactly. Based on any hints though from the bosses, it seems it will be some kind of Adventure mode. My guess is something in between Melee’s Adventure Mode and Subspace. Not as extensive as Subspace but more content then Melee’s adventure mode for sure. Perhaps you find the spirits of the characters to unlock them. But anything else is definitely all speculation at this point. It’ll be interesting to find out what this mode will be all about when we get to it.

KING K. ROOL

You know they just had to leave us with one more thing. And it certainly was a big one. K. Rool was only 2nd to Ridley in being one of the most wanted characters in Smash. And was often seen on the top of the list on the ballot. Also gotta say the trailer is amazing to show all those heroes and the villain and then it cutting to Donkey Kong, cause that’s when exactly you know who’s coming. The Dedede fakeout was also hilarious, though I doubt it really fooled anyone. K. Rool was in Smash and Donkey Kong finally gets a much needed increase of representation. Perhaps we’ll see Dixie soon come up as a Diddy echo. But until then K. Rool is what Donkey Kong fans as well as a good majority of Smash fans wanted. And he’s here cementing this Smash as certainly even more fan service focused then previous games.

Overall, an amazing direct. and can’t wait to see what else is in store for this game. We still have more characters and of course the Spirits mode to see. The road to Smash Ultimate is getting smaller each day and we’re surely in for a few more spots of interest along the way. Cannot wait to see what’s revealed next!

i’m a little stressed and sad.

so i been gathering the parts to upgrade my pc bc it’s high time i do so. We were finally putting everything together and let me tell you, the stress i went through was rough and draining, every five minutes there was something where I was afraid something wouldn’t work or something was gonna break and i felt like crying but then we got past it and i felt better but then again something else made me feel stressed all over again.

Either way right now it turns out my power supply is kinda old, and currently it has 4 pin plug for the CPU power but my motherboard needs 8 pin plug to work, that’s the big one, secondly the two fans on my tower currently cannot get power from the power supply there just isn’t more room, so gotta order a splitter so that i can hook those up.

so everything that can be hooked up is hooked up and currently two key things need extra wires to work.

i wish i could cry to someone idk man i just want to know if this works and put my mind at ease.

Even a basic hacker knew what that meant. A trace program was underway, and once it was completed, SecuWatch would be battering down his apartment door.

Ken began a head count of the seconds as he took action. His CPU’s temperature climbed into the triple digits, as the power supply in his computer began to crackle and whine. Ken had no other choice but to grab the large plugs in the wall. Once he did, a massive spark of electricity arced between him and the computer itself.

He howled in pain as he kept pulling, despite being electrocuted. The implant in his right arm was dampening the intensity of the shock, but it still ran down his leg to ground itself into the floor. Finally digging deep, he managed to unplug his system completely, the shock finally subsiding as he collapsed on the ground.

Electricity cracked and popped in a loud, violent flash before everything fell dark and silent. The surge had managed to knock out the power for his entire apartment, only illuminated by the neon signs outside. A small, flickering light from his computer’s hardware told him that his opponent had won, and the damage had already been dealt, as the sound of flames crackled and smoke began to waft out.

He crawled over to the kitchen and grabbed the fire extinguisher, crawling back toward his system and spraying the powdery substance all over, knowing just how much more damage he was doing to his system.

He was essentially committing digital suicide.

When it was all said and done, he angrily threw the extinguisher as hard as he could, hearing it bounce off of the kitchen counter and clamoring to the floor.

And then…he just sat there.

He didn’t know just how much time had passed. He sat in the gloom of his powerless apartment for what felt like days, even though it had more than likely been about an hour. Everything he’d worked so hard for was gone. His system was a wreck. His mind filled with hatred and a terrible desire to end BIOSERV with a terrible passion.

A buzzing sound flared up for a moment, telling Ken that his apartment’s power had been restored. Whatever happened must’ve been enough to blow out the transformer. Funny, he thought, I thought I got into this to help people, and here I managed to blow out the power for the whole building. Maybe even the block. What’s the point?

He didn’t even bother to turn the lights back on. He just sat there, facing the window and looking at the streets below. Everybody down there had a purpose. Everybody was a cog in some great machine, and he thought that by defying that, he’d had a higher function in the world.

And now here he was, alone in the dark.

Some purpose.

His Spex, now laying on the floor, blinked open, the cyan lenses becoming the only remaining light in his apartment. It was a text message from Tomis.

“Knock Knock.”

Ken snapped the Spex back onto the bridge of his nose, still not moving from his position. He sent the cursor to his apartment security controls and unlocked the door.

“It’s open!” he called.

A human stepped into the apartment. He had short, dark hair that swept off to one side, accompanied by a thin mustache. His attire was pretty standard, Black slacks and shoes, a dark shirt underneath a rather form-fitting leather jacket.

He saw the lizard-man seated on the floor and clicked the apartment lights on, then took stock of the damage.

“Oh…Ken…”

Tomis walked over to the computer station and picked up some of the powder, rubbing it between his fingers and identifying it immediately. The fire extinguisher laying on the kitchen floor only served to solidify what he already knew.

“…What happened?”

Ken growled. “I was fucking careless is what happened! Of course the security was too fucking lax, it was a goddamn trap! They knew that somebody would be investigating this, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say one of Mona’s sources set us up.”

“Alright, alright, calm down, Scales,” Tomis comforted, placing a hand on Ken’s shoulder before sitting down next to him. “We’re gonna figure out who did this, and we’re going to make them pay.”

“Yeah we fucking are. We’re going to make them fucking suffer for this.”

Tomis had never seen Ken so riled up before. “Hold on, okay, first off, you’ve gotta relax. You’re not going to accomplish anything if you run off half-cocked. We have to be careful and thorough. We can hit these guys, but we have to know what we’re up against. The more we know, the harder we can hit 'em.”

“…you’re right,” Ken sighed.

“Now c'mon. We can pick up the pieces later, let’s get something to eat, take your mind off things for a bit.”

“I…”

“…My treat?”

Ken'pai huffed. “I’m…not hungry.”

“Ken, if you don’t come with me, right now, I’ll choke you out and carry you.”

The lizard-man knew that the human was more than capable enough of following through on that threat. He gave a nod. “Alright, just…”

“Just what?”

“I just…want to sit here…for a moment.”

“Okay.”

Tomis shifted into a more comfortable seating position, wrapping his arm around Ken'pai’s back. The reptile leaned his head over, resting it on the human’s shoulder.

“It’s bullshit,” Ken said.

“Yeah. Total bullshit,” Tomis agreed, squeezing a bit tighter as the two sat in the ruins of Ken’s life.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Review — Curves and Lines of Gran Designs

Arc System Works proves to be the best fighting game developer with Granblue Fantasy Versus.

There have been so many facets of my life that have changed since I started working with DualShockers. Most notably, my gaming habits and interests have completely changed. There was a time where I believed long single-player experiences were the best games the medium could offer. Games like Mass Effect, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft were the peak of game design. Now, that is entirely not the case.

I have begun to favor much tighter, shorter experiences. Games such as The Messenger, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Emily is Away are among my favorite games of all-time. This also includes competitive gaming, arguably the tightest, and shortest experiences you can have in a video game — especially with the fighting genre. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing most of the modern lineup you would see at EVO (Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Shodown, and Under-Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r]). Each feels familiar but makes slight deviations to create a wholly unique experience. Granblue Fantasy Versus by Arc System Works and Cygames is no different.

The one aspect of Granblue Fantasy Versus you will quickly notice in your first match is the visuals. They’re legitimately stunning. It is one of the best looking fighting games I have ever played. The amalgamation of the character designs, the bright environments, and aggressive animations all flow so well together. Everything is just so clear, which is both visually pleasing, and helpful for gameplay. It’s on par with Dragon Ball FighterZ, another Arc System Works game that arguably is the best looking fighting game of the past few years.

While I do think the overall visual quality is fantastic, the animations, specifically during the opening match cinematics and the super special “skybound art” moves, are a bit off-putting. The game runs at a solid 60 fps, but the character model animations look like they run below 40 fps. This is to simulate the motions you would see in an anime. A similar technique was done with Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s opening match cinematics. I understand the appeal of using this animation technique, but it just feels out of place, especially when the rest of the animations surrounding it are in 60 fps.

The actual gameplay of Granblue Fantasy Versus is not unlike other fighting games. There are light, medium, and heavy attacks. The fourth input is character-specific. It is all fairly standard. However, there are a few facets of its gameplay that really deviate from the norm.

Similar to Dragon Ball FighterZ, and to a lesser extent Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], combos are executed automatically by simply pressing one of the three attack inputs. The button you press determines if it is a light, medium, or heavy combo. It is incredibly simple and very approachable for players who may not play fighting games regularly.

Adding to Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ approachability is how special attacks are executed. Instead of inputting a quick button combo (i.e. quarter circle+light attack, etc.), you can simply use variations of R1 and a direction on the d-pad or analog stick (if you’re using a DualShock 4); pressing the heavy attack input while executing special moves with this technique will give you a stronger special move. Additionally, inspired by Granblue Fantasy‘s roots, there are cooldowns for these special moves; the stronger the special move, the longer the cooldown. Of course, there are traditional inputs for special moves (called technical commands), which are beneficial as they have shorter cooldowns.

If that didn’t seem easy enough, any basic attack can be canceled into a special move. For example, your auto-combo might be three medium attacks in a row. Well, at any point during that combo, whether it is after the first or third input, you can cancel into a special move. This includes “skybound arts” which can be done by pressing quarter circle+R1. These are essentially super special attacks you can execute once your meter (known as the SBA gauge) is full.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is maybe the most intuitive and beginner-friendly fighting game I have ever played. Because of these simplified inputs, pulling off effective combos is a cinch. However, the game’s accessible nature should not be mistaken for lack of depth. I’ve played hours of this game and I am still getting whooped by other players who are far better at reading their opponent’s moves and executing even more intense combos. Every time I felt like I learned enough to be competitive, I then discovered something entirely new. It’s disheartening because I’m terrible, but it keeps me wanting to learn more about its systems and get better an using them to my advantage.

Learning the basics and even some of the advanced techniques of Granblue Fantasy Versus can be done naturally by playing the traditional Arcade Mode or going into Free Training. However, there is a tutorial (called “Mission Training”) that can teach you these basics, as well as some easy combos to get you started. There are also character-specific scenarios that will test how well you can defend, maneuver, or punish certain moves.

Much of the Mission Training is helpful and will get you started in Granblue Fantasy Versus, but it will do only that. Other fighting game tutorials, like the ones found in Mortal Kombat 11 and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], explain everything you need to know in tremendous depth. It’s impressive how much more I know about playing a fighting game because of Mortal Kombat 11‘s tutorial. I can’t really say the same about Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ tutorial. It is by no means bad, but I wish it went into the nitty-gritty of it all.

Everything you have learned can be tested online against real players. Overall, I would say the online experience for Granblue Fantasy Versus was positive. Out of the few matches I played online, it never felt like there was a noticeable amount of input lag, or that the match itself was lagging. It was a smooth experience throughout my online time.

While much of my time was getting absolutely crushed in Ranked, you can play casual online matches in Granblue Fantasy Versus via its lobby system, which I absolutely adore. When you first boot an online lobby, you will get to choose a cutesy avatar based on one of the few characters, as well as your default character you will fight with. The lobby I was in was aboard a skyship, which can hold up to 64 players at a time. Aboard the ship were Granblue Fantasy Versus arcade machines, which essentially act as the queue. A play can then approach the same connecting cabinet and fight against you. Again, everything worked as intended, but was unexpectedly adorable as well.

If competitive fighting games aren’t your bag, there is a single-player story called RPG Mode. To put it simply, Gran and his skyfaring crew are tasked to save the world from an evil long-haired man named Beezelbub who plans on restarting the entire universe. I put it simply because it’s entirely forgettable. In the moment, I was interested in its story, but it gets so monotonous by the time you get to the third level, I would just finish the quests as fast as I could.

My qualms are mostly pointed at the lack of variety the quests hold. The majority of these quests task you to simply kill the enemies on screen, or kill as many as you can within a certain time period. Enemy variety is mostly stagnant, until the latter half where darker versions of those enemies appear. It just gets tedious and boring.

It is interesting that the mechanics do switch up a tad bit during these portions. Since there are multiple enemies on screen, you are not constantly facing an enemy like you are during Versus Mode. Rather, your left and right movements determine where your attack will land. It is akin to a side-scrolling beat-em-up but with fighting game controls. It is novel at first, but that novelty wears off very quickly.

There are moments called Raid Battles that do change things up but only for those few moments. Raid Battles are more akin to the traditional mechanics of Versus Mode, as you are only facing one opponent. However, these can range from other characters on the roster, to giant dragons. Each one of these bosses felt unique, both visually and in gameplay, and are really the only reason to check this mode out.

After you’ve completed each quest, you’ll earn weapons and abilities you can equip. This is where the RPG elements come in (along with the previously mentioned special moves). Each weapon features one of six elements: Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Light, and Dark. Weapons also feature skills that help increase your attack or HP. These weapons can be upgraded with the in-game currency which will increase the actual level of the weapon, with skill shards which will level the weapon’s skills, and by feeding it copies of the weapon to increase the level cap.

When you equip a weapon, it becomes part of a grid, which you can add more weapons to, giving you more attack power and HP. As such, it promotes some experimentation, as you can add any weapon to the grid. However, Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ CPU fighters are so easy to take down in its default difficulty, you hardly have to tweak anything. I was perfectly fine with just using the auto-select feature, automatically places weapons on the grid for you.

The RPG Mode also features the Tower of Babyl, which is an extension of that story that adds a plethora of missions. There are a total of 100 floors, each following either one of the few quest structures from the main story. Along with unlocking Hard Mode after you beat the four to six-hour story, there is plenty to do once the story is done. You can also play cooperatively with another player, which may distract you from the tedium to a certain degree. It’s just too bad the majority of the quests are so repetitive.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is such an amazing fighting game. The mechanics are both intuitive and full of depth, making it a solid choice for both fighting game casuals and veterans. The visuals are gorgeous, with an animated aesthetic that allows it to stand out amongst the crowded genre. Its online features, although simple, are functional and allow you to really test out everything you’ve learned from its decent tutorial. The only downside is its RPG Mode, which may be filled to the brim with monotony, but it still has moments that are worth checking out. I cannot recommend Arc System Works and Cygames’ newest fighter enough. Granblue Fantasy Versus is a must-have for fighting game fans.

I built a new PC - A Technophile's Journey

There comes a time in every man, women and child’s life when their current computer just isn’t up to the daily tasks you throw at it.  It’s time for an upgrade.  Recently I did just that, and I want to take you on the journey into my new PC experience.

Let’s go back to where my current system started.  Back in Late 2009 (September or October, I don’t recall) I walked into my local FutureShop store and started browsing, like I always did.  I loved looking at electronics and I enjoyed ogling all the stuff I wish I had.  I don’t recall what computer I had at that time, but I know it was some cobbled together mid spec’d system that did just enough to do what I needed it to do, which was gaming.  In the FutureShop Computer section a shiny black and orange motif caught my eye.  This was a Gateway FX 6802-07c, a FutureShop exclusive model that had a Core i7 920 CPU, 12GB of memory, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 graphics card.  This thing was light years beyond my current system, and the price was amazing.  $1,500 +tax, including a 23” wide-screen LCD.  I was sold.  I wanted it.  No – I NEEDED it.  After a phone call to the (ex)wife to convince her that I needed this beast of a machine it was decided to go ahead.  Lucky for us, the FutureShop employee discussed with me that if I got a FutureShop credit card, I could pay for this computer monthly with no interest.  It was as if the stars and planets had aligned and I was destined to get this computer.  The transaction processed flawlessly and it was mine.  I was giddy as I walked out of the store with my 2 big boxes.  I couldn’t drive fast enough to get home and tear into the packages and get this machine running.

Fast forward 7 years and 8 months later, this time it is June 2017.  The FX6802-07c sits on my desk, seemingly happy to chug away at my games of World of Tanks or a moderately modded Skyrim.  Our video editing from conventions, slow but still get done.  This machine, which at the time I named back in 2009 as ‘IX’ (from Dune, the planet of new machines, as I am a huge Dune fan) had been slightly upgraded over the years.  A new Asus GTX 560ti in 2014, a 120Gb Kingston SSD in 2014.  Everything else was stock, aside from a new 32” LG LCD TV as bigger monitor.  The 23” one still worked, and was my transportable screen when I went over to a friend’s house for our Lan parties.

I take good care of my computers, and my family’s computers.  Every 6 months they get a decent dusting and maybe a system tune up.  I always keep them running as smooth as possible when I can, and always fix any issues with them that arise. IX had been solid and never let me down, but I knew that his age was catching up with him.  While windows always ran smooth and fine, and other than video editing and rendering taking a long time, which is normal, things were seeming fine.  Skyrim ran decently fine, but did crash from time to time, and I attributed that to the mods, which probably was 99% accurate.  I had switched cases from the stock Gateway case a month earlier, needing a visual refresh of the computer.  This new case had a small window on the side panel so I could see in.  I don’t know exactly how I discovered it, but I was looking in the window one morning while I was killing time before work, and it practically hit me in the face.  A puffy capacitor.

Now for those of us not technically savvy like myself, the motherboard has lots and lots of capacitors, they are like little batteries that charge and discharge, and generally help stabilize voltage and signal levels in circuit paths.  I won’t go into too much more detail, because it isn’t really that important.  Generally, the capacitors (or caps) used in computers are of the electrolytic type.  They have an electrode and a dielectric, which is generally a fluid.  Over time the fluid dries out or expands, which causes the pressurized can of the cap to bulge or pop.  You see this type of failure lots on older motherboards.  When this happens, the machine will begin to fail and it’s time for a new computer.  Here is a quick video from Linus Tech Tips which explains a little more detail.

Those of us who are capable in electronics have the ability, tools and knowledge to attempt a repair of this type of failure, but a repair shop might charge a lot of money for this repair because it is tricky and time consuming (well not really, it’s more of an annoyance).  Since I am one of these people I decided to attempt the repair.

So, after dismantling all the components from the motherboard, and removing the motherboard from the case, I took it to work where my soldering station is located.  I won’t go into too much detail of the repair, but I did end up removing and replacing the damaged cap, and when hooking everything back up it continued to work.  IX was back to his old self and things were back to normal.

But this isn’t exactly true.  You see I am a technophile, and I love tech, which is probably why I work in the R&D department of an Oilfield instrumentation company.  I work with electronics every day, and I work on a computer at least 16 hours a day.  I used to be a big follower of computer modding, and tried keeping up with the tech back before 2009, but without ever having a budget to spend on these new parts and gear, it was always just a pipe dream to build a monster system.  When I purchased IX, which was my first boxed system, I kind of let all that slip away, because this was the monster system (at the time) and it ran every game and task I threw at it without blinking.  Now in the months leading up to the cap issue with IX, I was determined to build a new gaming system again, as Skyrim wasn’t running as smoothly as I wanted, and with all the new PC titles out there I wasn’t able to fully enjoy them to their visual glory.  I shopped online, looked over specs and prices, compared pre-built systems to base parts and I wasn’t set on any one thing, and I needed money.  Due to the age of IX, this was going to be a full upgrade.  As a starting point, I know I needed a new video card, but the limitations of my older CPU meant a bottleneck.  The CPU, being a 1st generation i7.  It would need to be upgraded, and because a new CPU was needed, so was a new motherboard and ram.  So, I decided I needed a new CPU, motherboard, ram and video card.  I could reuse the power supply and hard drives, since they were still good and I could save a little bit of money, possibly getting me a new system sooner (I hate waiting).  I browsed some pre-built system sites, to give me an idea of what the cost would be for a pre-built system, then I went and priced out comparable parts on the main retailers I use (NCIX, Newegg Canada and Memory Express).  In any case with just the base 4 components I mentioned above, I was looking at about $1,000CAN or more as a starting point.  I would need time to save up and get a budget together to allow me to buy something.  Often the pre-built systems seemed the most tempting, as they were complete and tested, and I could also remove parts most of the time like the hard drives to save a little on the price.  I had an idea of what I wanted to do, I just needed time to get some funds together.  Did I mention I hate waiting?

No Pax – Boo, New House – Yay!

As luck would have it, time was on my side.  Every year, Tali and I plan to go to Pax West in Seattle.  We “try” to save up for it, but you know how that goes.  Now before you get the idea that I spent our vacation money, no, that isn’t what I did, and we cancelled our trip to Seattle for different reasons.  You see we bought a house, and we move in August.  So, when we were discussing the option of buying a house, or going on a trip to Seattle to take part in the amazing Pax West convention for my 5th time.  It was a tough choice, but ultimately, we decided buying a house was better for the long run.  Don’t worry Game-Refraction is still going to Pax West, just Tali and I are not going.  We will go next year.  You see we have also been working diligently on our finances this year, and we’ve made amazing progress on our debt load.  Anyway, it seems I went off topic a little.  Where was I ……

Oh yes, we decided to buy a house, and to make that possible we cashed out a bit of both our RRSP’s to make the down payment.  This is a standard practice with buying a house in Canada, so we decided that if I withdrew a little extra, say $1,000, I could potentially use that to build a new PC.  Now as nice as I would love to build a monster system with an unlimited budget, I have always had some sort of financial end cap that would restrict the amount of hardware I would be allowed to purchase.  While this makes me financially responsible, it can be restricting in a sense that I won’t be able to get the latest and greatest.  I felt this was a challenge, I had a limit of $1,000, let’s see if I could get everything I needed and stay within the budget.  Going over the budget meant that item would have to wait until I had saved up a little more funds. Challenge accepted.

I knew a pre-built system was totally out of the question unless I felt I would get lower end stuff, and I wanted to go a little higher end.  Did I mention I hate waiting?

I spec’d out the 4 main components over the course of a few hours on a Saturday, tossed the list to a few tech savvy friends to make sure that I wasn’t a fool in my picking.  They all said it looked decent.  The parts I settled on were as follows:

Motherboard – ASUS ROG STRIX B250H GAMING LGA1151 DDR4 HDMI DVI M.2 USB 3.1 B250 ATX Motherboard

  Now the cost on all the items above, including tax and shipping, came to $991.14CAN.  Amazingly I stayed within my budget perfectly, with a little to spare.  My original plan was to reuse the new-ish case IX was currently occupying.  I decided to pick up the following

Now with the case I was over budget, but I had a little cash saved up and I could make it work (it was on sale for $79CAN).  I wanted my new system to be as silent as possible, while still performing great, which is partly why I went with the AiO cooling system, plus I know liquid cooling performs so much better, and it was pretty much the same price as a decent high-end air cooler.  So, Memory Express shipped my order on the following Monday, and it arrived on Tuesday (I hate waiting) and NCIX shipped the case also on Monday, and it arrived on Wednesday.  It was like Christmas to me, and well my Wednesday evening was spent disassembling, and assembling this new system.  I think the hardest part for me was the Corsair H60 AiO since I have never worked with one before, but in the end, it worked well and everything went together.  The be Quiet base 600 case is a little taller than my old case, and the PSU coming from IX had a little bit of a short motherboard power lead, which I needed to creatively run behind the GTX1050 for it to reach the very top of the Asus motherboard, since they decided to put it at the very top of the board, when all new cases have the power supply at the bottom (not smart).  When it came time to power on everything and see if it all worked, I was presently surprised that it fired up on the first try, and everything worked amazingly well.  The best part, was I hear nothing.  This setup is so quiet I had to check to see if all the fans were working because they are so quiet.

So now that I have new computer, I plan to be good for the next 7 years and 8 months before I begin looking again for upgrades.  I am sure I will upgrade a part here and there (new modular power supply?), but in the end this computer will keep me going for the next while.  Thank you for joining me on this journey, please browse the gallery of the build, and let me know what you think.
