- He is needy and clingy and desperate to please. He may act on top of things but if he thought someone he shared a connection with was mad or upset with him? Que the big blue (Red?) puppy eyes and doing anything to change their mind

- Would be a toxic ass and use his hivemind abilities on a vampiric partner to 'persuade them' to not be in a mood/angry/hurt. Just for minor annoyances/them ignoring him... Almost cheeky in a way even if his partner/mate glares afterwards similar to Jasper in New Moon with Bella in the hallway

- If you asked him not to control you? Done. I'm so serious, he really is not some egomaniac in my HC he's just so damn weird and use to rejection he forces things to be loved. Like, his ego is he thinks he's helping not that he's above anyone. He is so lonely and he'd be like a Gomez Addams to a partner. Just express discomfort with the idea of him controlling your mind before turning (or after maybe?) and he won't.

- Praise kink. Has dog energy like you tell him he's 'good' and his preening (might drool) like some dumb happy dog you just called a 'good boy'. Tell him he's good during sex and he moans loudly. Eager to please.

- Is a switch with a sub lean. If he doesn't love you; he'll dom you. He'll push your legs back, mock you, pound into you. If he adores you though it's over for that creature. He will let you do just about whatever you please so long as you love him

- Traditional old-fashioned courting. Even after you turn; flowers, poems, serenading you, getting you meals/blood.

- FREAK. Drooling freak that would lowkey get off on pain and most kinks.

- Nuzzling. Nuzzles more than he kisses; almost like a creature (Technically is one)

- Idk how he sleeps but you gotta be wrapped up in his arms.

- Is so protective of you it's borderline possessive and controlling in a mother-hen way. You're his only true person, hivemind or not, and he CANNOT live without you. If something happened to you he'd be devastated and he cannot lose his people twice. He just can't.

- Sings Gaeilge to you all the time. Letting your head rest in his lap after a long night. Running his clawed fingertips over your scalp after a feeding and sings a song only he knows in his old mother's tongue that brings you both comfort

- Your pleasure is his pleasure. He could give you sexual/physical pleasure and get nothing in return and still be satisfied seeing you unravel beneath him from oral to a massage; as long as your sated

- Purrs (It's more like a growling groan that vibrates his chest) when you run your fingers through his hair, scratch his back or massage his shoulders.

- Picks you up to fly short distances with you; even if sometimes that's grabbing you by the shirt or arm in an emergency and him complaining you're deadweight in that position (He made you hit multiple branches on the way lol)

- If you're turned, he shields you from the sun with his own body out of pure instinct. You're the first one he grabs and tries to find shelter for; his own hide be damned.

- Gives you humans to drink with a proud look of a provider and predator.

- If you're human, you won't be for long lets be real. But if you are? He's extremely careful with you. Going easy on you and drooling at how damn good you smell to him. (Might graze his fangs teasingly over your flesh as a 'things to come' type of gesture)

Who are your favorite artists? The art kind.

I'm a bit surprised I haven't been asked this question before!

I appreciate so many artists that it's hard to narrow it down. But based on what I can remember and what I can check on my Instagram and bookshelf, here are some of my favorites:

Gustave Doré (1832–1883) → A French artist, illustrator, and sculptor, celebrated for his intricate and dramatic engravings and illustrations. He is best known for his illustrations of classic literary works, including Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, John Milton's Paradise Lost, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. His skillful blend of realism and romanticism, combined with his mastery of visual storytelling, has established him as a significant figure in the history of illustration and fine art.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) → A Dutch post-impressionist painter renowned for his expressive use of color and bold brushwork, which had a profound influence on 20th-century art. His most famous works, such as Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom, showcase his unique style and emotional depth, capturing the beauty of the world around him.

Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821–1909) → A Dutch-Belgian painter best known for her detailed and charming depictions of domestic cats. Specializing in animal paintings, her style combined realism and a romantic touch, often portraying cats in cozy, playful, or elegant settings that captured their personalities and grace. Carl Kahler (1856–1906) → An Austrian genre and animal painter, particularly known for his paintings of cats. Kahler primarily worked with oil on canvas, using rich detail and realism to bring his animal subjects to life.

John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) → A British painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, known for his romantic and mythological subjects. His art style blends elements of Romanticism and Classicism, featuring realistic figures, rich colors, and a strong focus on nature and detail. Clarke is best known for his illustrations in classic literary texts, including James Joyce's Dubliners and Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination. In these works, his illustrations masterfully balance whimsy and darkness, creating striking visual narratives that continue to resonate with audiences.

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) → A Czech painter and decorative artist best known for his distinctive Art Nouveau style, characterized by intricate, flowing lines, elaborate floral motifs, and a harmonious use of soft colors. Mucha's work often features idealized female figures, embodying beauty and elegance, and is heavily inspired by his fascination with nature and Slavic folklore. He gained fame for his poster designs, particularly those promoting the actress Sarah Bernhardt, as well as his decorative panels and illustrations.

J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951) → An American illustrator renowned for his iconic magazine covers and advertising art, particularly his work for The Saturday Evening Post and the Arrow Collar Man campaign. Leyendecker's mastery of visual storytelling and branding helped shape American commercial art in the early 20th century, and he significantly influenced later artists, including Norman Rockwell.

Leonid Afremov (1955–2019) → A Belarusian-born artist known for his vibrant, impressionistic paintings created using a palette knife technique. His distinctive art style features bold colors and dynamic brushstrokes, often depicting landscapes, city scenes, and emotional moments, such as rain-soaked streets or sunlit parks.

Ayami Kojima → A Japanese artist and illustrator best known for her work in video game design, particularly as the character designer for the Castlevania series. Her art style is characterized by intricate, gothic aesthetics, combining dark fantasy elements with a detailed, ethereal quality.

Victoria Francés → A Spanish illustrator known for her evocative illustrations that blend gothic, fantasy, and romantic themes. She is particularly known for her illustrated books, including the popular series Faery Tales, which showcases her unique blend of fantasy and gothic aesthetics.

Yoshitaka Amano → A Japanese artist and illustrator renowned for his distinctive style in character design and concept art, particularly for the Final Fantasy video game series. His style fuses his interests in traditional Japanese aesthetics like those of wood block prints with Western fantasy elements. It results in ethereal forms, and a dreamlike quality, especially with Amano's use of watercolor techniques and intricate details to create a sense of movement and fluidity in his work.

Nico Delort (IG: nicodelort) → A French illustrator known for his detailed, black-and-white artworks created using scratchboard techniques. His art style is heavily influenced by the aesthetics of 19th-century engravings and woodcuts, blending elements of Gothic, fantasy, and mythological themes. Delort's work is recognized for its dramatic use of light and shadow, intricate textures, and atmospheric depth, often depicting moody, fantastical scenes.

Vania Zouravliov → A Russian-born artist known for his intricate, surreal illustrations that blend dark, fairy-tale-like themes with fine detail and symbolism. Zouravliov's work explores beauty and darkness, merging the macabre with the fantastical.

James Jean (IG: jamesjeanart) → A Taiwanese-American visual artist and illustrator known for his surreal, highly detailed works that blend elements of fantasy, mythology, and pop culture. Jean gained early recognition for his award-winning covers for DC Comics' Fables series.

Audrey Kawasaki (IG: audkawa) → A Japanese-American artist known for her blend of contemporary Japanese aesthetics and Western art influences. Her ethereal paintings often depict young women surrounded by nature, featuring intricate line work and a soft color palette. Her works are typically painted on wood panels, adding a quality that enhances the emotional depth of her subjects.

Jessica Cioffi (IG: Loputyn) → An Italian artist known for her enchanting illustrations and concept art that seamlessly blend traditional and digital techniques. Her work reflects the influence of 19th century neo-gothic and Japanese manga, and among the artist's favorite themes are witchcraft, folklore, and mystery.

Gretel Lusky (IG: gretlusky) → An Argentine digital artist and illustrator, Gretel Lusky is recognized for her whimsical, vibrant artwork featuring fantasy characters, and magical themes. Her style blends cartoon and anime elements, characterized by bold lines, expressive characters, and a colorful palette. She is well-known for her enchanting illustrations on social media, where she shares art tutorials and collaborates on various comics, book covers, and other projects. She is also known for her debut graphic novel Primer, an original graphic novel for DC Comics.

Margaret Morales (IG: margaretmoralesart) → A Filipino watercolor artist currently residing in America. Margaret Morales is known for her dreamy, ethereal portraits that intertwine feminine figures with elements of nature, such as flowers and animals. Her style, characterized by soft brushwork and pastel hues, creates a surreal, fairytale-like atmosphere. Her evolving work draws inspiration from art nouveau, mythology, fantasy, natural elements, Japanese/manga art, and fashion.

Tactooncat → An Indonesian digital artist known for creating illustrations that feature cats in a humorous and whimsical style, particularly cat memes and videos. Their work appeals to cat lovers and fans of lighthearted, expressive illustrations.

Am I Born to Die? || Sean MacGuire x f!OC

Fic Summary: A former fiddler in a traveling band reminisces on her short time in the Van Der Linde gang in the year 1889 through memories and letters. During a time when seeking a fresh start from a path of crime led to finding kinship, love and a hell of a lot more trouble.

Notes: One thing I failed to mention : This story takes place over the course of 7-9 months (still undecided). It's loosely based on the canon time line of R2R2 but doesn't follow it precisely. The reason being that I have not finished the game yet, and don't want to spoil it for myself by doing too much research.

My Pa use to say that my memory was as sharp as a whip. And believe me, coming from that old bastard, it was not meant to be a compliment. 

He was born in Dublin, Ireland as Seamus Donoghue Jr. I learned, much later in life, that he changed it to “Shane Donahue” to sound less Irish when set foot in America as a young man looking for work. He came from a dirt poor, hungry family of three brothers and a widowed mother in hopes of earning some money to send them. I often imagine my poor gran had high hopes of her eldest son not turning out like his father, who was stabbed in a pub after he swindled the wrong man out of a game of cards. But after serving 2 years in the US military, her Seamus came out a wounded, bitter drunk, and dead before his time, just like his Pa. 

Maybe I turned out more like my grandfather than I’d care to admit.  I happen to be rather good at swindling myself, and have never been stabbed. But if you asked my father, despite getting his straw-colored hair and fair skin, I was every bit like my “good-for-nothin’, god-damned-squaw of a mother”. These were the words I usually heard before he put down the bottle and reached for the belt to give me a good beating for “back talking”, when all I was doing was pointing out how his drinking was the reason we had no money. My mother wasn’t afraid to say this to his face either.

My mother, Claire Donahue was actually half-French, half-American Indian. Her own mother taken all but forcibly from her tribe up North and married at seventeen to a French soldier. He ventured South in search of gold and then abandoned her with a house full of his children, most of whom died. My poor mother was destined to live a harsh life, and struggle was all she knew but she was intelligent and strong-willed.

I never understood what she saw in my father, besides an escape from a troubled past and perhaps a hope for something more.

The only thing he was always good at, was playing the fiddle, and his chirpy Irish tunes never failed to draw a crowd and a few coins if we needed them. He used to say that music was just one of those things that made the world seem brighter, even if it was cold and cruel most of the time.

I don’t know much about their life before I was born. They met near Georgia where both had ended up when they were young. They wrote each other all throughout the time he served in the war. His foot was blown half off by shrapnel, and she loved him enough to still marry him when he was discharged, despite knowing he couldn’t provide much. If it wasn’t his foot that slowed him down, it was his mouth costing him work after he’d had too much to drink. 

My mother did her best to support us and worked in the kitchen of a rich aristocratic family in West Georgia before she was wrongly charged with thievery of their gold, and hanged when I was seven years of age. 

I knew she didn’t steal that gold. If she had, we wouldn’t have been eating potato stew and living in a leaky shack, barely scraping by with what was left after my father’s drinking. I don’t know why that family wanted her dead so badly, but it never sit right with me. Maybe she heard or saw something she shouldn’t have or maybe they were just so cruel to take a woman from her child. All I know is that it sparked a rage that would never leave me. I wanted to torch their house once when I was older but my father talked me out of it.  

“You’re all I’ve got left, Millie.” He told me. “If I have to watch you swing too, I’ll surly  drink meself to death. I’ll end up in the depths of hell along with you. Is that what you want?” 

I hate that his selfish, manipulative words could soften me. There were times I believed that man really did care about me as more than just a work horse or a dowery, and part of me still does. I’ve always forgiven him more than I should, because I felt he didn’t ask for the shit hand life dealt him, even if it turned him into a miserable drunk. I knew in my heart, he wasn’t all bad.

I was with the Van Der Linde gang for nearly a year. Three seasons passed, but in my memories it feels like a lifetime. I think I knew all along that I wasn’t like them.

I was more than intimidated, in those first days I was getting acquainted. Here I was, a penniless, wandering fiddler without a band and without a fiddle. - It had fallen off the train back in Wallace - being welcomed by folks who were, for all I knew, blood thirsty criminals like you read about in stories.

I had robbed or swindled only a few men in desperate times. Shot a few, too, but only because they would have shot me first, or far worse. Every time I had, I prayed for their souls, as well as my own, and said as many hail Mary’s I felt necessary.

But these Van Der Linde people made my skin crawl with the way some of them laughed about people they’d killed for a few coins or a pocket watch. They talked about being at war with other gangs known as the Pinkertons and the O’Driscolls. They enjoyed killing as much as country folk during hunting season. I tried not to show how scared I was to sleep next to them those first few days. I mostly just kept to myself, kept quiet, and contemplated whether or not they’d hunt me down and shoot me if I just took off in the night with one of their horses. 

Before we eventually reached our camp in Colter, they were talking about a heist in Blackwater. Robbing a bank wasn’t something I would have ever done willingly before meeting them, but I felt I was too deeply involved to back out, even just a few days in. And honestly, I wondered if it was exciting as they made it sound with your heart pumping as you rode out with a sack full of rich men’s money. 

We were headed up the mountain, moving camps every few days. The air was getting more crisp and skiffs of snow appeared on the trees and the cold, rocky ground. For a few days, we found an abandoned mine shaft to keep us out of the wind and set up our tents and wagons, but we all knew that soon we’d need real shelter. 

Dutch Van Der Linde seemed like a man who was both dangerous and exhilarating. He carried himself in a way that I knew the gang respected. Even when he didn’t seem sure of himself. He was someone who treated them all with love and loyalty as long as they gave it back. Called the younger men his “sons” and the older ones his “brothers”. Though something told me he’d cut the throats of any one of them without hesitation if they crossed him. 

It didn’t take me long to reason that most of them weren’t as tough as they talked, and some were not as dangerous as they looked.

I took to Arthur quickly. He took me out hunting game my first day in camp, just to help keep me in Dutch’s good graces and show him I could pull my weight. Arthur was always doing that, helping the gang out, but in a ways you didn’t realize that was his intention until after his good deed was done. Any sort of praise seemed to embarrass him. He preferred that we all believed he had a heart made of stone instead of a tender one, but anyone with two eyes could see how much he cared about the gang.

Within a few weeks of me telling him I’d lost my fiddle, he returned to camp with a new one he had stolen out of a wagon. I couldn’t help myself. I threw my arms around him and thanked him. He just hugged me back stiffly and muttered that it wasn’t necessary, but I think I saw a little pink in his cheeks when I pulled away.

There was a lot of hurt in those deep blue eyes of his, however, that I dared not ask about. He rarely smiled and seemed to prefer to work alone. Arthur could be tough as nails when he needed to, but he was as good a man as they came, if he cared about you. 

Charles Smith wasn’t like the rest, either. Strong, silent and handsome in a way that some of the women, myself included, couldn’t help but stare when he walked by. His broad chest and firm, bulging arms turned my face a new shade of red the first time I saw him without a shirt. 

I could tell early on that he was one of the good ones, by nature. He seemed very serious. Worked hard, spoke very little, but I felt safe around him. Half-American Indian, like my mother, so I knew he was good people. 

He caught me crafting a pair of buckskin gloves by the fire in our cave one day about two weeks after I arrived.  Mr. Pearson had a lot of requests from the gang as we were approaching colder weather and was falling behind. I knew how to work with leather, and I needed something to do to keep busy, and warm. I had a flask of bourbon that was helping with this, which I seldom drank, but the wind that night was something else and Karen had offered it to keep me warm. I was starting to feel a bit tipsy, and no more warmer, but I could still focus on what I was doing.

Charles was standing by, warming his hand and watching my stitch work, while Sean Macguire sat on the other side of the fire. He was keeping warm in his own way of wildling a chunk of wood, drinking much more than me and singing an Irish tune that sounded like one my Pa used to sing. Only Sean was singing it wrong and I was trying to ignore him. 

Charles seemed to be, too as he pointed to the gloves. “Looks good.” He told me. “Did you soften the hide first?” 

I gave him a shy smile and nodded. “With oil, yes.” I’d barely heard Charles speak to anyone before that moment, and I found him so intriguing. I wanted him to keep talking to me. 

“My mother was half-Indian, you know.” I added. This seemed to peak his interest.  “That so? What tribe?”  I was about to answer Charles when I heard a sound coming from the other side of the fire that could rival a braying donkey.

“HA!” Sean slapped his knee as I looked up at him slowly, and unamused. “You don’t look half-Indian to me.” 

Sean and I had gotten off on the wrong foot, when he’d shoved a gun in my face on that train. After I had shot the lawman tailing him and Arthur, he had thanked me on the way back to camp, as though I had done it to save his life. I told him that if the man hadn’t showed up, the bullet would have gone in his head.  After that, he sort of avoided me, which was just fine. 

I could tell early on that he was the sort of person that got under everyone’s skin. He seemed to think his only duty was to serve as the camp jester. I had once heard Molly O’Shea, Dutch’s Irish lady, mutter that he was an embarrassment to the whole country. 

He did seem to brighten their moods during the times he wasn’t pestering them, and the way he spoke almost made me miss my father. Arthur said it didn’t happen often, but like many of the men, if he’d been holed up in camp too long and drank past his limit, Sean would be itching for a chance to show off and pick a fight with someone. I felt the opposite of missing my Pa, then.

“I never said I was half-Indian,” I responded to his ignorant statement. “I said my mother was.” 

“Well, you look full-Irish.” Sean responded in an accusatory way. 

I started to rise from the stump where I was sitting. “Are you calling me a liar?”

“Yes, I am.” He gave a firm nod. 

I decided it better not to bash him in his stupid mouth like I wanted to and not give him the satisfaction. I sat back down, trying to let my anger settle and went back to my stitching. “What the hell do you know? Eejit..” I repeated my father’s favorite insult under my breath, which only encouraged him. 

He gave a scoff “Eejit,” he mimicked and laughed again. “You’ve even got a bit of an Irish brogue that comes out after a few drinks, dont’cha?” 

I continued to ignore him growing increasingly furious and embarrassed in front of Charles who had gone quiet. 

“An’ by the way,” Sean lowered his feet from the log they’d been resting on with a graceless thud to lean forward. “I saw how you write your name in the ledger, Miss Donahue. It’s Donoghue.” He enunciated the ‘Oh’ sound. “With an ‘O’. That’s how we spell it in Ireland.” 

“I don’t care how it’s spelled in Ireland.” I shot back, still refusing to dignify the argument he was trying to start, for the most part.

“Well ya should care. Who are ya trying to fool? Spellin’ an Irish name like it’s English.” 

I sneered at him. “‘ 'least I can write my name.” I watched his scowl deepen to my satisfaction. Apparently I’d struck a nerve. “It’s the way my father spelled it.” I added.

“Then it’s your father who’s the eejit, not me.” He snapped back. 

My blood boiled. I picked up the knife next to  my hand I had been using to cut my stitches and lunged across the pit, with the full intention of slicing off his ear. I grabbed him by the front if his jacket. We started to go down into the snow, and Charles tried to intervene, calmly.

Arthur, who was walking over with an armful of firewood saw what was going on and let the logs fall to rush over and pull me off of Sean. He stood between us, his hands pushing us apart. “Hey! HEY!! Enough!!” He scolded us like we were his two children roughhousing. “Goddamn fools, both of you! Christ sake… there are more important things that need to be done around here than rip each other’s throats out! We got enough to worry about.”

Sean and I were still trying to catch our breath, shooting glares at each other over Arthur. I lowered the knife.

“Don’t let Dutch see you acting like this,” Arthur told the both of us. “We gotta keep our heads before we get to Blackwater. Got it?” He looked from Sean’s face to mine waiting for an answer. I jabbed my finger at Sean.

“Talk about my family again and I’ll cut you open.” I said sharply. Then I turned to leave the fire pit, before I got mad enough to act on my threat, but the bastard had to have the last word. 

He seemed quite insulted to have been nearly maimed by a woman in front of his colleagues. “Yeah? Well…I’d like to see you try!” he called after me “Scrawny Irish wench!” 

Arthur picked up that stupid-looking bowler hat Sean always wore, which I had knocked off in the scuffle and shoved it into his chest. “Knock it off, Sean! Put the bottle down and do some damn work. Before I cut you open.” he let out a sigh and shook his head. “You and your damn mouth, boy.”  I would have smirked to myself at Arthur reprimanding him, as I ducked into my tent still fuming, but I was in no laughing mood.

Like I said, Sean and I didn’t get off on the right foot, and I didn’t think, after that incident, that the young man would ever do anything but infuriate me. But this was one time when my first impression was incorrect. As Mary-Beth would say, you can’t always judge a book by the first chapter.

TIMING: Current LOCATION: The Apple Store! PARTIES: Regan and Van SUMMARY: After Regan and Van catch up (thread coming soon), the two of them head to the Apple Store to get Regan set up with a new phone. Van has ulterior motives.

“All iPhones are rectangle,” Van assured Regan with a smile.

Regan would give it to the Apple Store – they knew how to create a clean, almost sterile-looking environment. The floors shined. The walls were bare like the back of a tombstone. If only they got rid of all of the computers.

Van seemed to know what she was doing. So, uncertain, Regan followed Van up to the counter. As nice as this store was, she didn’t like the idea of an iPhone, but her Blackberry repair man was not responding to her messages, and she didn’t know of any other Blackberry specialists on the east coast. Ironically, there was one in Dublin that popped up in her searches. She panicked and snapped the laptop shut when she saw it. So Regan was willing to give this a try.  

And it was good practice. Because Regan forgot how to be anything other than a failure, so she was attempting to be something else now. Not a failure, not perfect, something in between, like a human. “Hello,” Regan greeted the boy at the register – little more than a pimply teenager. His nametag said John Pubik. Loathing filled her immediately and she wasn’t sure why. “I am looking for a phone. It must be durable, able to withstand a sc– humans. Obviously. Me. I am the human.” Her stomach burned red. She needed to take some of the heat off her. So she pointed at Van like she had previously been invisible. “This one, too. She is also a human. The phone is for me, though. Not the human. I mean, the other human.” Regan shook her head. “Forget the humans.” She never could. “Durable. Do you have that? And I would prefer a rectangular one.”

Van’s end goal when Regan had asked her for help in finding a new phone had been to install all of her favorite games onto it, that way she could pester the white haired woman into giving her hearts and recharges. Obviously the whole not using a blackberry thing was optimal, too. Who even used those anymore? Though, she had to guess that with an iPhone, Regan’s use of emojis would double— no, triple. Then again, that wasn’t her issue. Her issue was… getting Regan a new phone and installing Tsum Tsum and Candy Crush. Maybe even Honkai Star Rail. She looked at Regan out of the corner of her eye, deciding against the latter. Regan would take one look at Pom Pom and think about what it’d be like to see his bones, probably. 

She stood next to Regan quietly as John Pubik walked up to them. She remembered that last name. He had gone to high school with her, a couple of grades ahead. She was almost positive that his sister, Lorelai Pubik was now some like, mommy blogger or something. Yeah, that sounded right. Though, as Regan began to speak, discussions of being human ensnaring them, Van cleared her throat. She was human, but Regan was not. And Van was like, totally cool about that! Her best friend was a bear, and people she went to school with were turning into werewolves. Hell, John Pubik was probably a siren or something. Probably. She looked at him, looked at his reflection in a neighboring mirror. Okay, not a siren. 

“All iPhones are rectangle,” Van assured Regan with a smile. She pointed to the latest iPhone, “it’s going to need a lot of storage. She likes… storage.” Never mind it was for the games she would be downloading. “Needs all of the emojis. You can do that, right?” Van could just go and pick out the phone that Regan needed easily, but she seemed dead set on wasting this guy’s time. John Pubik looked between them, heaved a sigh, and motioned for them to both follow to the latest iPhone release. 

“The green one is nice, right? But they have just like, basic silver. You look like a basic silver person.” Van picked up the phone, the cord keeping it from being stolen, snapping it back into place. She withdrew her hand and rubbed her thumb from where it had pinched the skin. 

“All we got are rectangles, miss. Unless you want an Apple Watch. That’s a square.” 

God forbid Regan learn about apple watches. “We’re just looking for a phone.” She imagined Regan would ask, how do you even fit an apple into a watch? That’s absurd! Or maybe Ireland had changed her. Who knew.

All phones were rectangles? An itch of embarrassment prickled at Regan’s skin as she followed Pubik and Van over to a display with some phones, which in her opinion cluttered up the space. She left these phone-related annoyances up to digital forensics. She did know about storage, though. And not just the kind that housed cadavers and files. “Yes, storage is important. It must fit the internet on it – a browser, are you familiar? – and many photos, as I never delete anything. You shouldn’t either. It will aid the death investigators when you die.” John stared, his mouth somewhere between a gape and a frown. 

A quick snap grabbed Regan’s attention. She gave Van a sideways look, but then studied the colors of the phones by her hands (and the color of her hand, which was slightly red). “Did the phone hurt you? Did he arrange for this?” Her lungs readied themselves. But she pieced together what happened when she saw the coiled cable. Regan reminded herself to focus, because she didn’t like John. She kept catching the intention to betray deep in his eyes. The reason was unclear.

Regan looked back and forth between the two phones again. The green was closer to the color of her (ex-)wings than it was a tempting shade of jade. So… “silver,” she confirmed, pleased with Van’s assessment. The child knew what she was doing. “You are good at this. You should work here.” Regan did not look at John. He shouldn’t work there.

Pubik eventually seemed to shake himself free of some shock. He was pale. Regan debated offering to get some water. John Pubik was fine, though. Regan didn’t know his lineage but she suspected the Pubiks were always fine, even if it was at the expense of others. She blinked at the thought. Where did that come from? Also, why did she even need emojis? She was not some child, who needed the aid of images to convey messages. 

Durable like bone, as it turned out, Pubik pressed on. “Right-o. A new, silver phone with storage and emojis. We can sure do that, ayup. All the models have emojis. Any of our phones, and any from the last dec–” He looked in Van’s direction and stopped talking. Weird. He cleared his throat and pivoted. “Yup. They’ll even update with the new ones every year, like the shaking heads in 17.4. Crazy it took them so long to make those ones, eh?” John seemed to be making an effort to inject some normalcy into the conversation. Regan only grew more confused. And harbored emoji opinions that had only needed a poke to be expressed. “Do you not control the emojis? Release more, faster. Add a liver. Animate them. Why do they not move?”

Pubik looked in Van’s direction again. He was sweating heavily. Again, Regan wondered about water. “Tell me if you feel faint,” she instructed him, which was a completely normal, human thing to say to a fellow human (even one who she suspected was disloyal). Regan stretched the iPhone closer to her face and flicked a finger against the glass screen, which seemed so fragile. It didn’t bode well. “I will purchase this. How many of these do I get per week? What are my options for plans? Emoji and otherwise.” Thank rot she had Van here to guide her.

Van wasn’t sure why Regan was explaining browsers to the phone sales guy, but that didn’t matter. He looked a little confused, but Van made no move to explain Regan’s… thought process (that was probably a good term!), because it would only send them in tight little circles, and Van wasn’t totally sure she wanted to go down that road. It would take a lot more energy to explain what she meant than it would to just let her say the things she wanted to say. It was probably better off that way, anyway. “You’re going to need like, a lot of storage.” How long did banshees live for? Awhile, right? Then again, Regan would be collecting new phones by the time she was gone, right? Van would be like, seventy, and Regan would be… how old was Regan now? Van’s mind wandered as she watched the salesman flounder beneath the array of questions Regan had. 

At her question, she shook her head. “I mean, no? I don’t— no?” She let out a short laugh, shooting the salesman, John Pubik, an apologetic glance. She didn’t need to apologize for Regan and she knew that, but it felt like she should. She was a little odd, and she could be off-putting. The only reason Van hadn’t found her as such was maybe because she liked her a bit like someone liked the shoes they couldn’t ever throw out. That was a great comparison, Van thought. 

“I don’t really want to work here.” She already dealt with tons of annoying people at Sly Slice. She could only imagine how annoying the people would be with technology. But this wasn’t about Regan, no way. Van thought Regan’s requests were… very like her. They were understandable! “I’m sure it’s like, a super cool place to work at though.” She looked at the array of phones on the desk after putting the one she had picked up back down. She was in the market for a new phone, too. The one she had bought off of Craigslist after breaking the one Erin had given her had a cracked screen and it was hard to tell exactly how much damage she was doing during boss fights in HSR. 

John Pubik went on to relay back exactly what Regan was looking for, but she was almost certain he was going to screw it all up, because she gave him a stern shake of her head as he began to veer into dangerous territory. God forbid Regan want a phone from every decade. That would be something she’d want, especially to test out what was optimal. Van couldn’t let that happen. She needed the most recent one, or maybe the one before that, but nothing in the past ten years. Absolutely not. 

“Nobody controls the emojis. I don’t think he has the power to do that.” She shot him a glance before she picked up another phone while Regan examined the one that fit her needs. “And you can get stickers that move. From the App Store. I’ll show you how.” She should be the one to set up Regan’s phone, probably. If this guy did it, he would do it wrong, and then it would be her problem later anyway. 

“Get per week? You want multiple phones?” John Pubik tilted his head to the side, clearly confused by Regan’s question. 

Again, Van interjected, “you can get an otterbox— no, it doesn’t have like, otters or otter things inside of it.” It would be something that she asked, and she just knew it. “It’s a case. For your phone. They’re the best. I had one on my old phone before it got stolen. They’re like, super expensive. You make doctor money, so it will be fine.” She smiled at John Pubik, then turned her attention back to Regan. “You only need one phone. One phone. One otter box. A screen protector. That’s what we’re here for. I’ll download you moving stickers.” And other things, but Regan didn’t need to know about those yet.

“I don’t care about stickers. Those are for children. I care about watching a liver because I cannot do that through other means.” Maybe Regan should have given the simulation baby stickers instead of that knife, though. Van, once more, seemed to know what she was doing, and Regan was grateful to have her right now. Maybe she could talk some sense into Pubik. How was this confusing? 

“Yes, multiple phones. Sometimes multiple per day. Your phones are poorly-constructed and the glass is thinner than the maggot-chewed epidermis of a four day old cadaver. You should be ashamed. So I need more than one.” He only looked more confused than before. This man was testing her. Regan continued, “You see, I used to be a loyal customer of the Blackberry phones. They are sturdy. The femurs of phones. But now they’re gone, and my choices are between an iPhone and Google, which I do not trust. They have a browser, by the way. Are you aware? Anyway, I–” 

She was cut off by Van mentioning a box of otters. “What stage of decomp–” Cut off again. It was just a phone case. Didn’t Van understand why she needed so many phones? It had nothing to do with the consistency of the edges, and everything to do with how breakable the screens were. Regan frowned down at the models. They would disappoint her within a day. Unless Van knew something she did not… and she did seem to be full of knowledge on the subject matter. Regan decided she would allow Van to make this call. “Fine. One phone, and the otter, and the livers.”

Regan had never seen a more obvious expression of relief than the one on Pubik’s face. He was the Google of humans. Untrustworthy. Pretended to know everything, but was likely full of inaccuracies and misdirections. He slipped away to get the phone Regan was apparently purchasing, and she looked at Van, raising an eyebrow. “He is confusing, hm?”

When Pubik returned, it was behind the counter, and that, too, seemed to spill relief over his face. Regan exchanged another odd look with Van. How was she supposed to get better at not being a banshee when she was meeting such suboptimal humans? 

“Your phone, miss. And I grabbed one of the Otterboxes from the back, free of charge. Do you need anything else? Like um, umm, there’s another store over there.” He pointed to the door. She realized he had grey pits on his white shirt. “Plenty of different Apple Stores! There’s another one over in Portland! And Augusta!” His eyes teared up. His grin did not reach them. His pimples were red. Everything about him said don’t come back. Regan measured him with no expression, staring, and the pimples grew redder. If Van said to do this… she handed over her credit card, though she hadn’t actually checked if her bank account had been emptied since coming back. It didn’t matter. 

As Pubik rang up the new phone, all Regan could think about (other than the sense of imminent betrayal she felt in her marrow) was that Pubik hadn’t wanted to work here. Regan couldn’t fathom why. Also, how did he know where he wanted and didn’t want to work? How did anyone know? She thought of medical school, the morgue, how everything just clicked in a way that fulfilled her and helped others, but… but what if it had all been because of what she was? What if she never actually wanted it, because she had been taught not to want? She couldn’t go back yet. She needed to try other things. This Regan was a free-thinker. An idea began to stir in her skull. And never quite finished stirring before she spoke it aloud.

She accepted the bag with her new phone and stuck the receipt in it, but did not walk away, even though Van seemed like she needed to. Regan looked straight at Pubik. “Hire me.”

Ireland Shoegaze & Noise Pop, a guide, vol.1

Ireland is a small country, but its musical influence is second to none on the world stage. From their traditional Celtic music , stars like Van Morrison, to current pop rock acts like U2 or the Cranberries, there is no lack of outstanding talent.

When it comes to Shoeagaze, this country is seminal in the genre, with My Bloody Valentine being THE ground breaker. There Album Loveless is often quoted as inspirational by many artists.

What you may not know is that there are many other Irish bands that took up the genre. Here are some of them.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE (MBV)

The band was founded in Dublin, in 1983 by Kevin Shields and Colm Ó Cíosóig. Its line-up changed over time, until it crystalized in 1987 with Bilinda Butcher and Debbie Googe. Liam Ó Maonlaí, that ended up founding the Hot House Flowers was part of the band for a short while.

The band would often rehearse near Smithfield (Dublin) which I lived myself in for 3 years. They experimented with guitar sound and pedals, creating something new.

"One of the most recognisable aspects of My Bloody Valentine's music is Shields' guitar sound, which "use[s] texture more than technique to create vivid soundscapes.""  -- DiPerna, Alan (1992). "Bloody Guy". Guitar World. No. March 1992.

After touring in many countries, inspiring countless bands and recording 2 studio album, the band split in 1995. I was lucky to have seen them in Paris, on the 17th March 1992 in L’Olympia for a concert that an experience in loudness and sound. You can listen to it here.

They reunited in 2007 and released their third studio album, mbv, in 2013. They are to this day working on new material.

MBV is often cited as a pioneering act in the shoegaze genre. You can find many articles online on their history and their sound.

While the Shoeagaze movement declined with the arrival of the Grunge and Britpop scene, with most band disbanding in the mid 90’s, Loveless, MBV second studio Album, proved to have a lasting influence, inspiring bands such as Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Mogwai, Nine Inch Nails, Dead Horse One, and many, many others.

WHIPPING BOY

Whipping Boy formed in Dublin in 1988, the band comprising Fearghal McKee (vocals), Paul Page (guitar), Myles McDonnell (bass, vocals), and Colm Hassett (drums). They released 2 critically acclaimed Studio LP. The group split up in 1998 after being dropped by Columbia, leaving a third album unreleased. The self-titled album was eventually released in 2000 on their own Low Rent label

The band reformed in September 2005, announcing several Irish dates. The original line-up disbanded finally in 2006.

Irish Television did a piece on the band named “Whipping Boy - the most underrated Irish band of all time?”. Well, when you listen to their music you can wonder if there is not a bit of truth in this statement. You can judge by yourself in listening their music on Spotify. 2 songs to listen will probably make you want to listen more.

SUBMOTILE

Italian-Irish band that blend shoegaze, pop, noise-rock, ambient and post-rock elements. The band consists of the husband and wife duo, Michael and Daniela Farren, who are based in Dublin.

I love their music, which is an epitome of Shoegaze, with both really nice melodies and a great reverb sound. Their sound is very distinctive, which is not an easy feat among all reverb artists. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

A song I love (among any others) is “Slea Head January 1986”. It is dear to me as I was both struck by the sound and what the title relates to. This refers to place in Ireland from which some of Michael Family is from and some of my in-laws too. This is a magic place, the Dingle Peninsula, was elected by National Geographic as being one of the most beautiful place in the world and the song is a prefect soundtrack for the sightseeing. Note the song from Japanese Shoegaze band Plantcell, “The wind of Kilmalkedar'“ is also inspired by the area.

JUST MUSTARD

Just Mustard are an experimental rock band from Ireland. They formed in Dundalk in County Louth in 2016.

Their debut album was self-produced and recorded by the band in their home studio in Dundalk and in Start Together Studios, Belfast, with recording engineer Chris Ryan. It was often tagged as influenced by Shoegaze. The band toured with Fontaines D.C. and did gigs alongside The Cure.

Their sound has slowly shifted towards heavier, noisier tones, to simplify becoming more like the Cranes and less than Catherine Wheels. In 2020, the band signed to Brooklyn-based label Partisan Records, which released their sophomore album, The album peaked at No. 17 in the Irish albums chart and received critical acclaim upon its release.

NEW DAD

NewDad present themselves as “an alternative indie rock band brings sombre themes to life with their easy-going sound, raw vocals and thrumming backing”.

NewDad are a rock band from Galway, Ireland, formed in 2018. Julie Dawson, Áindle O'Beirn and Fiachra Parslow started the band while in secondary school as a way of avoiding solo performances for their Leaving Certificate practical music exam. Sean O'Dowd, who was studying music technology in Limerick, began recording the band, before eventually becoming a full member.

CABL

CABL is ‘an indie rock band put through a broken dishwasher, creators of Sham-wave’. They are from Dublin, Drogheda and Slane, North East of Ireland. They all met in college.

The band has released a series of singles since 2022 that can be found on all on the usual streaming platforms. I love their sound and the singer has a beautiful and powerful voice that brings a nice plus to the mix. All their songs are well produced, well crafted and all together really good.

Album Review: Bruce Springsteen - The Live Series: Songs Under Cover Vol. 3

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band can play nearly everything and they play a lot of it on The Live Series: Songs Under Cover Vol. 3.

Though credited to Springsteen only - and a 1996 solo version of Woody Guthrie’s “Tom Joad” is nestled among the 15 career-spanning recordings - Under Cover 3 is a band album as it travels from 1975 in New York (the Shirelles‘ “Sha-La-La”) to Halloween 2024’s “Ghostbusters” in Quebec.

Over the decades, E Street has been home to a half-dozen to a dozen-and-a-half musicians. Stevie Van Zandt leaves. Nils Lofgren arrives. And the guitarists eventually become on-stage partners. Clarence Clemons fades away and Jake Clemons emerges. But while the players, and occasionally the band itself, change, the man at the helm remains the same even as he, too, changes.

Across 40-plus years and around the globe, Springsteen’s voice deepenes and coarsens as he evolves from the rambunctiousness of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “High School Confidential” in 1978 to reverential gospel flavor of “Long Black Veil” in 2006 to the the elder statesman consecrating the Pogues’ “Rainy Night in SoHo” in 2024 in the wake of Shane McGowan’s death.

“For Shane. For Dublin. For Ireland,” Springsteen declares at it ends. “We love you.”

And the fans love Springsteen right back, their enthusiasm making them a part of the soundscape whether giving a boisterous welcome to Gary U.S. Bonds, who co-fronted “Jole Blon” in New Jersey in 1981 or singing along lustily with “the other band” on Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped” in 1992 in Boston.

Not every track hits the mark, as “Street Flighting Man” is sloppy even by Rolling Stones’ standards and “Ghostbusters” and INXS’ “Don’t Change,” performed in Australia in 2014, are merely curiosities. But as a showcase for Springsteen and his musicians’ abilities to tackle just about anything, Songs Under Cover Vol. 3 is masterful.

Did T&G communicate between s1 and s2

Friends, lately I've been reading a lot of posts in this public, studying the view of other fans on the events in the series and I find it very interesting for myself. From what I read, I realized that many people are sure that they have been communicating warmly for these 2 years, but for some reason I had the opposite feeling that there was no communication at all, everyone was trying to move on, keeping a secret about their feelings deep inside.

I wanted to share my opinion. It was formed on the basis of what we were shown in s2.

In e2s2, we see a dialogue between Tommy and Campbell, from which we learn that they both know that Grace lives in New York, the town of Poughkeepsie, she is married. It seemed to me that the information that her husband was a banker was news to Thomas. "He's rich, I'm sure she's happy," Campbell stresses.

I'm sure Tommy and Campbell found out this information about her on their own (not from her letters) because they both can't forget about her and they're wondering how her life is going. Remember how Thomas found out in s1 that Grace had never worked in Dublin. He has his own people everywhere, so I'm sure it wasn't a problem for him. Moreover, Campbell is familiar with her family, and his position allows him to have any information.

In e5s2, when a T/G meeting takes place, it is clear from their dialogue that they know nothing about each other, except that Grace lives in New York.

She says, "but something else has changed, I saw the vans at the dock with your name on them," i.e. she tries to suggest, bring him into conversation.

She does not know the result of "how his coin fell " 2 years ago, from this we can conclude that he did not inform her of his decision after 3 days (as promised at the end of s1).

She also informs him that she is married at this meeting, assuming that he does not know. "By the way, I'm really happy in New York. And I'm married."

Shelby's office address (for sending the letter) I think Grace found out on her own too, it's not difficult when the company is quite well-known in the city.

From all this, you can understand why these two were so wary of each other when they met, because they absolutely did not know what each of them was experiencing, whether there were feelings, whether the resentment had passed, Grace did not know anything about Tommy at all, maybe he already had a personal life.

Grace looked guilty, and Thomas was cocky, which is understandable, given how the two broke up and didn't talk about what happened anymore.

Tommy looked more vulnerable because the jealousy of knowing she had another man was hurting him. This is clearly conveyed to us through the song that plays against the background of their intimate scene. And the very fact that she got married could well mean that she no longer loves him. And then, another piece of news, "we're trying to have a baby," we see all the pain in his eyes. It is after this that he tries to hurt her in return, for which he gets a slap in the face.

What did Grace write to him about in the letter he burned? I think she just wanted to let me know that she was planning to come to London and offer to meet. I don't think she would openly write to him about her feelings, in my opinion this is not in her nature, she is very secretive.
