arista's victor talent is mandolin, an instrument that she learned starting when she was a child from a friend of her parents who liked to play and would often play at the town's end-of-harvest celebrations. it was her first thought when it came to choosing a talent, but over the years she's learned to become a bit more careful with it - she doesn't play the same kind of music in the capitol that she would at home. the instrument and those songs are personal to her, part of the culture she grew up in, and while she's an outwardly friendly person, she's not a naive one. there are those capitolites who would want to hear the sort of songs played in her district, who would ooh and ahh and comment on how real and authentic and rustic and cute it is, but that's not something she feels comfortable sharing for their momentary entertainment, especially given their general sentiments towards district people. when she is asked to play songs from 9, she'll play altered versions of them, or give songs from the capitol a little more of a kick (the latter something that delights many capitolites, they think it's very fun). it also helps her keep enjoying the talent throughout the years, creating that line of separation between what she does for "work" and for fun. her playing at home is generally much more relaxed and she plays lots of songs from 9, always happy to learn more from different parts of the district.

wait what the hell literally crazy series of events that made me figure smth out thats been bugging me.

ok so i got a notif on tiktok that someone liked one my videos and i was like yipeee !! whatever. but i saw that the lady was holding an instrument and i always check muscians pages cause im like omg you have such a nice voice and you like myyyy silly little cover :3 anyway. she was playing an instrument called the autoharp ! which has a very distinct look

^ two photos for cropping. anyway i saw this and i was like. no fucking way. bc look. one of my favorite bands is rail yard ghosts and theyre unique bc they have a lot of different people who play in the band. they travelled and trainhopped the entire time they were active and people were constantly coming in and out and whats unique abt that is that everyone played different instruments. so every video of them (not that theres a lot lol) theres always different people and different instruments and even recordings like no two songs will ever sound the same.

with that context there one of the member in rail yard ghosts - her name is amanda and i covered one of the songs she wrote and she follows me instagram LMAOOOO - who was featured in a lot of videos and i had no idea what the fuck she was playing. they had some unique instruments in rotation but most had been identified by other people but this one that no one could tell me. AND ITS AN AUTO HARP !!!!! im soooo shocked i never expected to figure it out like im so happy.
