3 Women Become Priests In Tamil Nadu Chennai: Taking the opportunity to close the gender gap in the profession, three young women -- one the first graduate in a family, another a graduate and the third a postgraduate -- have chosen to take up the sacred vocation of priest in a Hindu temple. The salary is meagre but that does not seem to be an issue for these pious young women who say god will provide for their needs. "I was working in a private firm in Chennai and gave up the job after my friend brought to my notice the state government's announcement on training women from all castes to become temple priests," says N Ranjitha, a BSc Visual Communications graduate. "I found it important to serve god and hence the decision to become a priest," Ranjitha told PTI. Her parents from Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district are farmers and she is the first graduate in her family, she said. Like her, S Ramya, a postgraduate in Mathematics, and S Krishnaveni, a graduate in Mathematics, decided to dedicate their lives to temple service. The three were among the 98 archakas -- the other 95 being men -- who successfully completed a one-year course organised by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department. The training was challenging initially but their teacher Sundar Bhattar taught them well, Ranjitha said. They newly ordained women are to be posted as assistant priests in Vaishnavaite temples under the ambit of the HR & CE department to undergo training for a year, after which they will be given permanent positions. According to Krishnaveni, both her father and grandfather served at the Mariamman temple in their village in Tittakudi in Cuddalore district. "Neither I nor others are worried about the salary since we trust that the Lord will provide for us," she said. All of them were initiated into priesthood from the Mannargudi Sendalangara Jeeyar during the sixth month of their training. They have been trained in Pancharatra agama, the Vaishnavaite tradition of worship, during their time at the Archakar Training School run by the Sri Ranganathar Temple in Srirangam. Like the rest of the trainees, they too were provided a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000. Ramya, also from Tittakudi, hopes to take up the new role in a major temple so that she can get an opportunity to learn more and gain good exposure as well. Women entering temples as priests in TN under Dravidian model, says Tamil Nadu CM

They will be undergoing one-year training in different temples soon.

CHENNAI: Three women graduates, who are in their mid-20s and successfully completed their archaka course in the training centre run by the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Srirangam are ready to take up the job of archakas. They will be undergoing one-year training in different temples soon. Interestingly, the Archaka Training Centre in Srirangam has drawn 11 more women students this year, and other centres in the state may draw more women students in due course.

N Ranjitha (25) of Vellamathagu Koradacheri in Tiruvarur district, S Ramya (23), and C Krishnaveni (23) of Mel Adhanur village in Cuddalore district received the course completion certificate from HR &CE Minister PK Sekarbabu on Wednesday.

While Ranjitha is a B.Sc (visual communication) graduate, Ramya is a M.Sc (maths) graduate. Krishnaveni holds a graduate degree in mathematics. Though there are women priests in certain village temples and other places already, women who have completed a proper course on priesthood entering the sanctum sanctorum of HR and CE temples is a significant development.

N Ranjitha (25) told TNIE that during the one-year course, they were taught Pancharatra Agama, Naalaayira Divya Prabhandam, Nitya Anusandanam, how to perform ‘homams’ and other information on worship in temples. “The training we will be undergoing in the coming months will make us completely able to perform rituals on our own,” she exuded confidence.

Ranjitha said she is expected to get her training in Mannargudi Rajagopalaswamy Temple after September 20 while Krishnaveni requested the department that she be given training in Perambalur Manada Gopalaswamy Temple. Ramya wishes to get trained in a nearby temple. They were told that after one year of training if there were vacancies in those temples, they would be appointed as assistant priests. Otherwise, they would get appointments in other temples.

One of them belongs to the Pallar community while two belong to the Valluvar community. They are not worried about the income and just want to earn ‘punyam’ by serving the Lord. Hailing the three women who will be entering the sanctum sanctorum of temples, Chief Minister MK Stalin, in a message on X (formerly Twitter), said, “As our Dravidian Model government has removed the thorn from Thanthai Periyar’s heart by appointing people of all castes as priests, women are also stepping into sanctums, bringing a new era of inclusivity and equality.”

Stalin also said that despite women’s achievements as pilots and astronauts, they were barred from the sacred role of temple priests, deemed impure, even in temples for female deities. “But change is finally here!” he added. DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi congratulated the three women.

“The voice of these three women from where they were denied entry, will turn a new chapter in the social justice history of the state. I thank the chief minister and HR&CE Minister who made this possible.”

38 archakas & 8 women Othuvars appointed

DHARMAPURI: The DMK government has appointed 38 people as archakas from all castes and eight women as ‘Othuvars’, HRCE Minister PK Sekarbabu said on Thursday. Addressing reporters after conducting inspections in temples in Salem and Dharmapuri, he said, “

Recently 94 priests completed their training from 20 priest training schools. Among them are three women archakas and four othurvars. In Tamil Nadu, people can become temple priests irrespective of their caste. So far, 38 non-Brahmins have been appointed in temples as priests.”

“Since the DMK came to power, over 1,044 temples have been consecrated. 90% of the renovation works of the 850-year-old Salem Kottai Mariamman Thirukovil, which began in 2016 at the cost of `4.35 crore, is completed,” he added.

The minister further stated that the state government has so far surveyed over 1.50 lakh acres of HR&CE land belonging to various temples and marked their boundaries with stones. In the last two years, properties worth Rs 5,213 crore belonging to HR&CE have been recovered, he added.

Cabinet reshuffle in TN: PTR shifted to IT, Thangam Thennarasu to Finance; Rajaa gets Industries

Incidentally, the portfolio change for PTR came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that the chief minister’s son and son-in-law have amassed wealth.

CHENNAI: In a major reshuffle of portfolios, Chief Minister MK Stalin today shifted Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) from the finance portfolio to information technology and made Thangam Thennarasu the new Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu.

As expected, TRB Rajaa, who was sworn in as a minister has been given a key portfolio of industries. T Mano Thangaraj will be the Minister for Milk and Dairy Development, hitherto looked after by SM Nasar, who has been dropped from the cabinet. MP Saminathan, Information Minister has been given an additional portfolio of Tamil development.

PTR will now handle the subjects of information technology and digital services. Rajan, in a quick message, thanked the chief minister for the opportunity given to him as finance minister as well as for allocating the information technology portfolio now. He also recalled his tenure as the finance minister of Tamil Nadu for the past two years.

Thangam Thennarasu, who has been made Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management, will handle the following subjects: planning, pensions, pensionary benefits, statistics and archaeology.

Incidentally, the portfolio change for Palanivel Thiaga Rajan came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that chief minister’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin and son-in-law Sabareesan have amassed wealth. Rajan said the audio clips are fabricated ones and the chief minister also sought to downplay it saying he did not want to speak anything on the issue as it would give publicity to those engaged in cheap politics. The second audio clip was released by BJP state president K Annamalai.

TRB Rajaa, MLA from the Mannargudi Assembly constituency was sworn in as a minister at a simple function held at the Durbar hall of the Raj Bhavan here. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rajaa in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. The swearing-in ceremony was over in eight minutes. Later, the reshuffled cabinet headed by the chief minister took a group photo with the governor.

As expected Rajaa has been allotted industries portfolio. Rajaa, son of DMK treasurer and leader of the DMK parliamentary party TR Baalu, is a part-time member of the State Planning Commission. Rajaa has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Assembly for three terms since 2011.

MP Saminathan, Minister for Information has been given additional portfolios of Tamil development, previously handled by Thangam Thennarasu. After the reshuffle, Saminathan will be handling the following subjects: Tamil Official Language and Tamil culture, information and publicity, film technology and Cinematograph Act, newsprint control, stationery, printing, and government press.

Meanwhile, within a minute after the portfolio change was announced, PTR, in a lengthy message in Twitter, said: “The past two years have been the most fulfilling in my life. Under the leadership of CM MK Stalin, I presented one revised budget (2021 — ’22) during the pandemic, and two annual budgets (’22 — ’23, ’23 — ’24) post-pandemic. Despite inheriting record deficits and debt ratios, we have invested in a record number of social welfare schemes as well as record capital spending, all while delivering record-setting fiscal improvements. This is the epitome of my public service, and indeed of my life.”

PTR also said while fiscal consolidation and social spending are necessary steps for an equitable society, the drivers of development and growth are investment, enterprise expansion, and job creation.

PTR also thanked the chief minister for assigning him the portfolio of Information Technology — globally the №1 industry for investment and job creation today. “We know that technology shapes the future. Though Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in this field in Thalaivar Kalaignar’s time, we have unfortunately lagged our true potential in this sector in the last decade or so. I plan to build on the great efforts of my predecessor T Mano Thangaraj to attract more investments, accelerate job-creation, and deliver growth at a pace that will re-establish Tamil Nadu as a leading state in IT,” PTR added.

PTR also expressed confidence that his own experience in establishing and managing a pioneering Global Capability Centre 15 years ago, and the connectivity with the IT & ITES Industry gained during my professional career, would enrich his efforts in this new role.

“I wish the incoming Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu great success and many more achievements as he assumes responsibility today. I am sure he will accelerate the progress already made and deliver new records in his tenure. I thank my leader CM MK Stalin again, both for providing me with the previous portfolio for two years, and for this exciting new role to serve the people,” PTR added.
