I've gotten a few asks for a list of Met Galas. Technically, the gala has existed since 1948, and been themed since 1973, but I started at 2001 to keep it short (there was no gala in 2000 apparently). If you're interested in every theme that's ever existed, there's a chart on Wikipedia.

The Met Gala's objective is to mock some of the attendants and some of the people who watch from afar. The themes are varied: camp, heavenly bodies, manus x machina, punk, or cubism; what the attendants deliver reflects not their resources or power by access to certain pieces; it reflects their understanding of art (they are artists after all). The reactions from the people who watch from afar often show the reasons why they follow, admire, or consume from those whom they call artists. The adoration that some viewers have for those attending the event is frankly nauseating and meaningless, for they are fascinated by the incomprehension and waste of handwork of the people they idolise.
