You Look Right Through Me – Marceline (Adventure Time)

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go, (Name) should’ve been the one dancing with Marceline. Bubblegum smiled as the vampire spun her around in the air. She felt pangs in her heart each time the two laughed and smiled at each other. It’s not as though she didn’t know deep down in her heart that Marceline was never hers. The truth still burns even when you’re prepared for it. (Name) and Marceline were together for two years after the Vampire Queen tracked down the former Nightospherian. Marceline wanted to kill her initially after finding out from Finn and Jake that they met a lone demon from the Nightosphere in Ooo.

Marceline took pity on the young demon when she confessed that she wanted nothing to do with Hunson or the Nightosphere. Their relationship slowly progressed through the years. (Name) confided in Marcy that she wasn’t happy being born a Succubus, always neglecting Hunson’s orders to fulfill her duties. Marcy took responsibility for allowing (Name) to live by introducing her to the Land of Ooo. Spending so much time with each other revealed they were similar in personality and interests, particularly with music. (Name)’s human father was a drummer long before the Great Mushroom War; the few times they spent together, he would teach her.

As a couple, they were inseparable, having faced many trials alongside their friends. The two rarely had conflict within their relationship. Tension arose when Princess Bubblegum started to become more involved in their lives. Marcy would evade the topic each time (Name) tried to gain more information on their past. The vampire refused to discuss Bubblegum. Marcy began to show hostility towards her girlfriend if she degraded the princess. When the two became friends again, (Name) couldn’t help but feel like the third wheel in her relationship. Marceline and Bubblegum’s connection could never compare to her current lover. (Name) initiated the breakup, encouraging Marcy to follow her heart back to Bubblegum.

“(Name)! Come dance with me.” Finn shouted, pulling (Name) out of her thoughts. “It’s okay, Finn. I’m going to go for a walk instead.” She smiled, making the blonde look at her in confusion. “That’s cool. Hey, maybe I can join you on your walk!” He beamed, attempting to include his friend in the festivities. (Name) rubbed Finn’s head feeling the tears prick her eyes. “My walk is going to take me far away. You can’t come this time.” She sniffled quickly, turning Finn around to hide the tears rolling down her face. “I’ll see you again one day.” He promised before squeezing her hand and running into the crowd yelling. This drew attention away from the crying girl so she could leave peacefully. “If you don’t want me, then you’re not the one.” (Name) whispered, looking at the couple one last time. Turning towards the darkened forest, she took her first step toward finding happiness.

SO excited to see how Marceline is gonna react to Simon’s decision. Like. Simon is so deep in his own shit he has NO IDEA how angry she would be if she knew his plan. And there have been a lot of nods to this. I think it’s very intentional that we the audience saw little Frozen Marcy, but Simon didn’t. He’s not thinking about her right now. Her absence in these universes feels so pointed, ya know?

I mean think about Farm World. We know that in the Farm World universe Marcy guarded Simon’s body for a THOUSAND YEARS. She never left his side, lest the crown fall into someone else’s hands. She went mad with only the memory of his voice to keep her company… but he doesn’t know that. He doesn’t seem to fully understand what his transformation did to her.

It’s not super clear how much they’ve talked about it, but knowing both their characters I’m wondering how open Marceline was about her experience with the Ice King. How she could never get through to him even when she cried and pleaded. That she held onto Hambo for a thousand years. That she constantly watched him hurt the people she loved. That she was such a stranger to him that he tried to KISS HER??? Did they REALLY talk about it? Would he be throwing away his second chance if he knew how badly it would hurt her?

“All Simon ever wanted was to see Betty again”. And all Marceline ever wanted was to have Simon back. It’s what Betty wanted too.

I cannot WAIT for the reckoning.

Boyfriend!Marshall Lee Headcanons

• Contrary to popular belief, Marshall Lee is actually a good boyfriend and treats you like a princess… but you have to squint a bit because he doesn’t directly tell you. He’ll act almost the same way he does with Fiona, but underneath that façade, he does care for you.

- (Which is very surprising to Fiona because of all the shenanigans she and Cake get into because of Marshall, but I digress).

• He is extremely flirty with you. He even likes to tease you a bit.

• He loves it whenever he gets the chance to sing to you or show one of his new songs to you. He won’t make it a bit deal and gather a crowd. He’ll keep it lowkey. Just between you two.

- If you can sing? Then by all means, PLEASE join in!

• Marshall definitely writes songs for you and about you. And if you’re comfortable, he’ll try bringing you along to every party he attends where you can watch him sing.

• Because he’s a vampire, he is more active during the night. So, expect him to try and bother you (with the best intentions) in the dead of the night.

• When you go out on dates, don’t you dare touch his french fries! You already saw how badly that went with his mom.

• He won’t admit that he loves physical touch and I feel like that’s his top love language. So, whenever you get the chance to hold him or cuddle him? He is as happy as he can be. :))

• He would try and play pranks on you.

- And fail because you know him like the back of your hand.

- The aftermath would be very awkward. Marshall would just be standing there like: 0-0;;.

• This man showers you in compliments whenever and wherever he can!

• He loves watching movies at his place with you in pajamas.

• Meeeeaaan. Like teasing and bullying you is second nature to her, she’s such a spoiled brat. Will (very begrudgingly) stop if it really hurts you though.

• Wants your eyes on her and her only. She’s very possessive of you and gets jealous easily. If she sees anyone even looking at you funny, they’re getting their soul sucked immediately.

• Matching outfits? Matching outfits. If you don’t like her aesthetic, too bad. You’re wearing what she tells you to and that’s final.

• Constantly asking when can she finally turn you into a vampire, why would you want to stay human when you can join her and be together forever? (Plus getting to bite your neck and suck your blood would be totally hot)

• You know she’s toxic, but she’s just too irresistible to say no to. She genuinely believes she knows what’s best for you, and as long as you obey her every command, she will always give you everything you could ever want. After all, what more could you want than her love?

Marceline and Princess Bubblegum re-imagined

There's a lot to be said about the lack of alternate Marcelines in the show so far, but I think a metaphorical meaning is the emotional distance between her and Simon in the Land of Ooo. Like, they spoke once before Simon left, and he explicitly told Finn that he's so far chosen not to clue her in on his depression. She's like the only person who can commiserate with Simon on how strange the modern Ooo is compared to the pre-Mushroom War times they were familiar with. However, he's got this compulsion to suppress his emotions, especially ones he views as negative. And she's finally in a good spot where she's really happy, how could he put his emotions on her now? That's his adopted daughter, dammit, he couldn't do that to her. What kind of a father puts those problems onto his child?

If I may theorize, I think his arc of overcoming his emotional suppression has to culminate with him finally telling Marcy how he feels.

I think it’d be interesting to explore Marceline, PB, and Simon’s relationship post Ice King.

Ice King harassed PB relentlessly for a while, even if he calmed down after a while. PB has to hold resentment whenever it’s brought up, even subconsciously. PB also had hurt Ice King sometimes unprovoked or used his confused brain to cause harm (Wizard City, What have you done and The Cooler come to mind), often acknowledging she was being excessive.

Simon isn’t passive but he feels guilt and shame about being Ice King and it’d be interesting to have a scenario where PB jabs at something he did in that state in front of Marcy and see how she reacts cause Marcy acknowledges that Simon didn’t do those things and shouldn’t be blamed, but also understands the hurt Ice King caused can’t just be ignored.

The two most important people in her life were at violent odds at one point. The slate couldn’t have been wiped clean just cause he was uncursed.

Massive Spoilers Ahead

Ok I liked the last two episodes but I have my nitpick. Let's get this out of my head so i can go to sleep.

So I'm not surprised that betty and simon "broke up" but like I kinda am? I've wanted Simon to move on from betty, to be able to live in the present and cherish it for what it is, but I think it's the way they broke up honestly that feels a bit off

They couldn't be together anymore. betty merged with golb and simon couldn't follow, and the cycle of chasing each other eternally wasn't healthy. People say their relationship when they were together was unhealthy and while that isn't untrue, the chasing and obsessing over each other was way worse. Betty tore herself apart for simon, and simon was left with a hole in his heart for 1000 years that he could never fill.

And it's that obsession which feels a bit... i dunno, left out? It's definitely addressed in the show, beth pointing out that nova was obsessed with casper. But it's also pointed out that Nova and Casper did love each other.

And Simon and Betty DO love each other so their parting, as reasonable and as fulfilling as it is, feels anticlimactic in a way? I think they should have parted with tears in their eyes, both acknowledging that they've made mistakes and the past can't be changed but they love each other so, so much and they wouldn't trade their time with each other, as short as it was, for anything. Betty's "You were a wonderful experience" doesn't track with the betty in elements wanting to go back in time to prevent simon from finding the crown and stopping the mushroom war and the betty in the finale who SUMMONED CTHULHU AND THEN MERGED WITH IT TO SAVE SIMON SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE KEEPING SIMON SAFE WAS HER TRUEST, DEEPEST WISH

im being a bit dramatic. the series finale was good i think, and most of everything i wanted happened.

Betty clearly wanted what's best for Simon, and what would be best for him now is to move on. But I think admitting that to herself, to Simon, should have been more painful. That's my nitpick. Simon's tale is a thousand year old tragedy and I think letting go would have been the most painful thing Simon and Betty had ever done.

y/n absolutely adores marceline and wants to be just as cool as she is

Y/n hears the familiar laugh of a vampire and runs quickly to her sisters side. Her small hands grab onto Bubblegum’s gown as she hides behind the fabric of the dress. She looks at Marceline who had yet to notice her presence.

“Y/n did you say hi to Marcy?” Bubblegum says catching the Marceline’s attention.

Y/n waves and awkwardly mumbles, “Good evening Marceline.” Bubblegum smiles at her sister and pats her head. Y/n absolutely adored her big sister and her girlfriend. Marcy was just so cool! And y/n was just a little dweeb.

“Hey short stack. You been giving Pb a hard time?” Marceline smiles at the younger girl who shakes her head no. She’s practically beaming at the smile Marcy gives her. Y/n strived for the approval of both older girls.

“I was wondering if you could show me how to play bass?” Y/n mumbles while playing with the hem of her dress. Bubblegum tilted her head slightly, she had no idea her sister had any inclination to play base. Especially having Marceline teach her.

Marceline thinks for a moment before smiling at the girl. “Of course! I’d be honored to teach a princess, but that’s if it’s okay with Bubblegum.” They both turn towards her expectantly.

“I suppose it would be good for your studies y/n. Music is a very good thing to learn, I dabble in music here and there.” Y/n lights up at her sisters answer. She would get to hang out with Marcy and learn bass. That’s so cool.

“Yay! Thank you so much Bubblegum! I’m gonna be so cool just like Marcy!” Marceline picks up the young princess and starts to float around, not high enough for it to be dangerous though.

“Yeah you’re gonna be cool. Just like me. And who’s cooler than me?” Pb watches the two of them with content. She was glad they were getting along so well. Bubblegum did everything for her sister. She was the last of the family she created which meant she held her close in fears of losing her too.

Even though Bubblegum would never say it out loud, she was a bit jealous though at how much her younger sister looked up to Marceline. Was she not cool enough for her? It hurt her feelings just a bit. Not enough for her to outwardly say something, but enough for it to sting when she wanted to hang out with the vampire and not her.

Perhaps it was just a children thing. Finn too found Marceline cool and exciting even though he enjoyed spending time with Bubblegum because of the boyish crush he harbored for her. Bubblegum true to her nature would remain silent. It’s not like y/n could grow out of that anyways. She was to remain a child forever. Much like she would never age past this point.

“Ya know what how about the three of us go to get some grub. I’m starving. Fries sound kind of good right now.” Marceline floats over to her girlfriend with a giggling y/n still in her arms.

“Fries are my favorite!” She shouts happily wanting to be just like the older girl she admired. Bubblegum smiles happily.

“That sounds like a good idea Marcy. Y/n hasn’t eaten all day.”

It was true, she was so nervous when she heard Marceline was coming over she spent the whole day trying to find a cool outfit to wear. “Can I get a cool bass like yours Marcy?”

The vampire chuckles and puts the younger girl down. “Of course short stack. We can start a band and everything. Marceline the Vampire Queen and y/n the Gumdrop Princess.” Y/n was beaming with excitement.

“Come on let’s go! What are you slow pokes waiting for?” Y/n rushes the two older girls and pulls them along. Everything just felt perfect. Bubblegum giggles at her sisters excitement and smiles at Marceline. She mouths a silent ‘thank you’ making the vampire heat up in the face.

“Yeah Pb it’s no prob.”

• The day you were born, all of their friends and family were gathered in the waiting room. Marceline was especially nervous, she had little to no experience with babies and she worried whether she could be a good mom. Simon squeezed her hand in his, reassuring her that there’s nothing she couldn’t do.

• After what felt like an eternity, a MinervaBot finally brought you out, and everyone’s attention was directed towards you as she handed you over to Bonnie, congratulating them on their new child.

• Simon’s hands shook as Marceline beckoned him to come over and hold you, gently taking you in his arms as if you were made of glass.

• From that day on, Simon made a promise that he would always look out for you, swearing he would never leave like he had to with Marcy.

• As you grew up, Simon was a constant figure in your life.

• He helped you with your homework whenever you were having trouble, although when it comes to math he is equally as clueless.

• If you ever get picked on or bullied at school, him and Marcy are ready to march over there and beat the kid up. Bonnie has to calm them down and convince them that it’s not okay for them to beat up a child (although she certainly wants to as well).

• Simon would love it if you started to show interest in learning about archeology, he’ll teach you everything he knows about ancient artifacts.

• You beg him to take you along on an expedition, and while at first he’s pretty hesitant with how dangerous Ooo can be, Bonnie agrees to accompany both of you to make sure everything goes perfectly.

• Simon tries to tell her she doesn’t need to pack 6 different ray guns, but she won’t hear it.

• If you ever made him a drawing or some sort of craft he will cherish it for the rest of time.

• He has a shelf dedicated to displaying everything you’ve made for him, and he keeps it all in immaculate condition.

• When you enter your teenage years and start to date, Simon is very protective of you.

• Any partner you bring home will be subjected to immense judgement by him, Bonnie and Marcy.

• More than anything, he wants you to live a full and happy life, and he will do everything in his power to make that happen.
