The Heliotrope Journey team and I wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day, or Happy Lucky Day if you identify as living in the magical sector of this planet. Today, Frederick and his co. have ran afoul of a quartet of leprechauns that possess two bloodstones. These specific stones have imprisoned two malicious demons that are currently manipulating the leprechauns into thinking that Frederick and the others are invading the magical sector in Ireland and to give in to their bestial urges to defend it. It’s easier said than done for our heroes to reason with them. The black magic their ancestors trifled with in the past left them too far gone to hold onto little, if any, rationale left. We’ve addressed the origins of the leprechauns’ conditions and telling white magic apart from black magic in one of our previous posts if you'd like to learn more about what happened to them.

Something seems off about the leprechauns’ motive and where the bloodstones came from. Did they collect them on their own? Had someone from the Veiled Nocturne offer them these blighted stones and for what reason? Could it be that the leprechauns are being distracted while a more sinister plot is in the works? It’s been a busy past couple of weeks for us as we resume the development process of the third pilot episode and planning new content for our projects in advance. Furthermore, we are also safeguarding ourselves against the coronavirus pandemic by practicing basic hygienic habits such as washing our hands with soap regularly and applying hand sanitizer when out in public. We also caution you not to underestimate how fast the virus is spreading nor disregard recommended safety measures from the authorities and health organizations such as WHO. For example, on March 10th in the United States, there have been 299 cases and 15 deaths, however, as of this writing, there are now 4,565 cases and 87 deaths. Fast, isn’t it? :O

This is a reminder that this paragraph’s intent isn’t to induce panic. It is to make sure that you are taking care of yourselves as well and hope that you are staying informed on this health crisis. Personally, I recommend the BBC because of its reputation for publishing articles based on reliable and unbiased sources. I don’t recommend articles on social media like Facebook because I consider most of the articles posted by a variety of users to be deceptive (unless the user in question happens to read the BBC or another unbiased news outlet like the Vox). I'm really curious to see what Steven decides to do with his life at the end of the series, because I know he isn't going to die like the grimdark theorists have been talking about. His forte is helping people, but at this point I don't think he can make this his main focus in a healthy way. Narratively, I don't see him doing anything that the young adults of Beach City are doing, and that includes being a traveling performer (i.e. he can't do what his dad did bc there's already that parallel between him and Sadie). The last thing he needs is to commit himself to more gem stuff.

Whatever he decides to do, however, I feel it will involve the sentiment in the end credit song, "Being Human":

"Just a little time.

Just a little something else instead.

Just a little time.

Just a little something up ahead.

I'm dreaming of being... being..."

And presumably, the line finishes with "human." Steven has never had a normal life, except maybe when Greg was his primary guardian, much less the human experience Rose wanted for him. Before Homeworld was a threat, before Steven came into his powers, his greatest desire as a young child was to train with the Crystal Gems and become a part of their team. It was probably discussed since Steven's gem glowed as a baby, and they realized it wasn't Rose. There isn't a moment of his life that he can remember that hasn't been deeply influenced by his gem identity. He moved in with the gems when he was only 8 years old, and since then his humanity has always come second.

So, I think that whatever Steven chooses to do with his life, it will come with the realization that the root internal conflict isn't with his mother, or the Diamonds, or any gem that has tormented him, or anyone who has left him behind, but his desperate desire to be human. To live a normal, human life where he can grow and change with no strings attached, where everything he does doesn't have to be some big, meaningful act. Where he can just live with peace of mind. Right now he's a human body with the stagnant disposition of a gem--gems, who can do the same thing for thousands of years, indefinitely, without growing tired of it--and it's taking a tole on his very much human mind. It's especially hard when the gems in his life are learning to change in healthy ways while he, himself, continues to struggle.

He needs distance. He needs a little time to be human, and to be himself, no exceptions. That's why I wholeheartedly support the theory that he'll leave in the end, even if it's only temporary. But I also hope he doesn't go alone, because it appears that isolation is going to be his next big hurdle. My greatest hope is that he will take either Greg or Connie with him.

Band Camp Day 5

Late start today! 10 am!

Though we don’t usually have band camp on the Sunday, this year is different

Senior prank: wrap the gates in plastic wrap, put a tree at the top of the tower, and BAM it’s Christmas

When I got to the field, people were wishing me happy birthday, and then EVERYONE SANG TO ME

People have been wishing me happy birthday all day <3

Did some basic band block

Then he made us march diagonally????

I guess I understand why but I don’t like it

We have to do a lot more block drill this year to stay socially distant, so marching diagonally is a lot more important now

We also did these little cube marching things? I don’t know how to describe them, but we got into groups of four, each started at a corner, and marched four steps to each corner, rotating counterclockwise

He had four of the drill instructors demonstrate it, and while he was figuring it out, those four led us in the chicken dance

He saw a cop and made his megaphone make a siren noise because he thinks it’s the most hilarious joke

Then we got into the block at the end of pregame, and he kept making us do things “just to see how it’d go” like dude

Then we grabbed our chairs and got into rehearsal block

Somehow we grabbed a chair for kitty who wasn’t even there??? None of us know how we did that

Played a song none of us knew how to, lots of jokes

Broke into sectionals because it was sounding so bad, except it was 11:42 and we end at noon, and it takes us 5 minutes to walk to our tree and back so???

Called my mom during sectionals and we played her a lovely Bb scale

That’s something we did yesterday during sectionals: any time someone visited us, we played the most god awful, high-pitched Bb scale we could

Practiced the song a bit (it’s “In The Stone” by Earth, Wind, and Fire), then my grandma called, so I sat out to talk to her and let her sing happy birthday for me

Back to full band, where our band director said “play it perfectly and I’ll let you go to lunch” like haha funny joke

We also were the last section to get there, and he was like, “it’s like a herd of piccolos!”

So I added a tally of course

Lunch

Dome rehearsal! Today’s dress up theme was section colors, and we chose white

We did a lot of block band, and it was just a lot of figuring out how it all works, the echoing, etc

There was a point where my side of the block heard something wrong, so we tried again, and the other side of the block heard it wrong

We had to change the command rip

We did a playing rehearsal, and since the piccs are in the back, and we’ve never been in the back before, that was a trainwreck for a hot second

We figured it out because we’re Smart

Then we had a break!

I don’t have wi-fi at my apartment, so I was answering birthday snapchats and stuff when our band director came up behind me, looked at the picc section and said, “kids and their technology these days…”

So we all stopped and stared at him, not knowing what to say, so he continued, “Do you guys even know each other?”

And then he doesn’t walk away, no, he says, “Is [section leader] treating you alright?”

And we kinda hummed, we’re still Super Stunned so there isn’t a lot of noise happening

“how about [drill instructor]?” *proceeds to make fun of drill instructor’s name*

He has never known her name

Making eye contact with each other, the full shebang

He finally walked away and we fully lost our entire sh*t

The best part is that our section leader wasn’t even there, so we had to inform her of what happened

Break ended, marched pregame a bunch, and I don’t remember too much happening? He recorded us at one point so we can watch ourselves

He said “drumline, all those compliments I gave you earlier are out the window now,” and insulted them, so there’s that

When we ended rehearsal, it took him forever to get down from the bleachers, so we sang the jeapordy theme song

Drumline got the spirit stick, not that you guys know what that means, but lemme tell you: he always gives a small speech before awarding it, trying not to give the section away, and you’re supposed to gather clues from that speech

But I knew before he even opened his mouth who it was going to, because this man has a pattern, and the spirit stick is always awarded to the drum line during band camp

The sophomores led us in the alma mater and the fight song, and I was in the front, so I didn’t notice anything wrong, but apparently it was a trainwreck for the people in the back

Ngl I didn’t feel remorse because I was in the back the first time and it was a trainwreck for us, too

I feel like there’s stuff I’m forgetting, but I can’t think of any of it, so I guess I’ll just edit these posts as I think of it
