Happy Tuesday! Ibsen and the Actress (February-March 1995) had its world premiere at the University of Iowa theater; written & directed by Maria Irene Fornes, in close collaboration with visiting actress Patricia Mattick. Timeless Pattye Mattick as Elizabeth in a piece that explored the first English production of Hedda Gabler… Noticed 3 new pictures were added to the entry- hence the updated post…
(These are photos of the production from the University of Iowa Libraries’ website)

I believe this was the last play Pattye graced- as far as I know, from checking theater journals and online databases/newspapers .. Always remembered, never forgotten. https://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/islandora/object/ui%3Aictcs_36394

36 Abingdon Square by Maria Irene Forrnes dir Nancy Benjamin. So probably the most bizarre thing, okay one of the bizarre things about my last year of college was I got a job at Chess King. Now I shopped at Chess King a lot in 1984. But here it was 1994. And the only shifts I was able to work were Tuesdays & Thursdays from opening until about 2 PM. You know. Prime Shopping Hours for people who shop for trendy clothes. I think I made commision twice in the nine months I worked there. It was also at the “bad mall”, College Hills. Bad in the sense that other than the anchor stores, Target, Von Maur and (ugh) Hobby Lobby, and an Old Country Buffet (OCB!) not a whole lot was going on out there. In fact, several years later they would tear down the mall part and just leave the anchor stores. I also had to walk to and from work, which was a 40 minute walk on a good day. On a day when 3 feet of snow drops in an evening, it takes decidedly longer. I have no reason why the mall was open, but it was and I had to go in. Sold nothing, walked home. So I decided to pass through the Theater Building and warm up. I was cutting through the costume shop, because we all like each other, and as I passed through the door, I saw the entire shop congregated around the phone, they looked at me and Tona said, “He just walked in.” Turns out an actor who was in Abingdon Square went up to Chicago the night before after rehearsal, and they closed I55 and he was in an Emergency Station somewhere around Joliet and would not be at opening. So I got tagged in. Now I had never auditioned for this semester since I was already working on a show, so I hadn’t read the script. The character I was covering had one scene, he was the Glazier, he was fixing a window, he had two (?) lines, darnk water from a flower vase and then had sex with the lead behind the couch. And then exit. So Nancy and Dawn came in and we worked the scene, everything went well, went well in the actual run, and then I realized, oh I have to get this step ladder off stage in the dark and rammed it right into my junk. #retrospective #1994 #abingdonsquare #mariairenefornes #nancybenjamin #glazier #chessking #collegehillsmall #RIP (at Illinois State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Kw8o_Jbt9/?igshid=1e6syn8ht7weq

The Review: Encores! Off-Center’s Promenade
By Ross
I was told by my theatre companion that Maria Irene Fornes, the intrepid writer of the book and lyrics for the musical Promenade, shuffled two piles of cards; location and characters, to formulate this story. She then, using the top two cards as signifiers of each scene, one by one me, sliced and diced…

Tonight I attended Catastrophic Theater for opening night of “The Danube” by María Irene Fornés. An epic journey of an American young man visiting Budapest during which seems to be the 30s or 40s (the playwright never alludes to a specific period because the play trasends time.) The story begins with a an introduction to a Hungarian who then introduces him to his daughter. The two began a romantical (romance+musical) relationship which led to marriage. The lead becomes ill and it seems to have spread to the entire town. Even though the story’s journey seems to be pessimistic there are plenty of comedic moments through out. This play is perfect for the Catastrophic Theater where about 100 seats makes for a perfect intimate venue. As for ticket pricing, the non-profit has intituted pay-what-you-can price. Suggested donation is $25 but you could always give more because this group definitively does.
