―  Javi was born in the summer in Bronx, New York. His father was one of two Capos for The Control and his mother a doctor for the same gang.
―  He’s the middle son of 3 kids but the oldest one living. His older brother died at 23, he was a soldier within the Control.
―  At 18, Javi’s girlfriend ended up pregnant and had a son while Javi enlisted in the United States Army. He would spend another 6 years with the military before his father would be killed and he would return home to take his place as Capo, leading the Control Soldiers using his knowledge and skills gained while serving.
―  His girlfriend became pregnant again around this time and gave birth to their daughter, Isabela, and the two married.
―  Five years after the birth of his daughter, grief struck and they found out that Isabela had an incurable cancer and within a matter of months she was taken from them leaving Javi distraught and colder than ever.
―  The death of his daughter was extremely hard on him and with her death a ruthless, reckless, and impulsive monster was born. This only saw Javi rising in rank to a region manager.
―  It would be no more than a year before his wife would die, taking a bullet that was meant for him. Unable to feel much of anything, Javi’s son went to live with his Javi’s mother, Maricela, his only desire to protect his son’s innocence that remained.
―  Another few years and Javi had risen to Underboss under Adriana Ribeiro. When Adriana passed away and her daughter, Sloane, took over, Javi was understandably, visibly, and vocally upset by it. The girl knew nothing about any of it and he had little faith that she would be able to lead the gang. Of course, he stood corrected and quickly found himself giving the girl a chance and now stands by her and is rather protective of her.
🇭🇪🇦🇩🇨🇦🇳🇴🇳
―  There’s only been one girl since the death of his wife that has managed to break through his cold and callous exterior aside from Sloane and that was Reina Castro, Underboss of rival gang Coalition. They broke up about a year and a half ago and he’s been trying to get her back, to show her that she can trust him.
―  Javi loves his son even if it didn’t seem like he cared. In truth, he cared too much about the boy which is why he chose to have his mother raise him, his way of protecting his son and ensuring he didn’t follow in his footsteps.
―  He’s got a 7 year old Pitbull named Papi Chulo

Credit: NASA/Bridget Caswell >back to gallery Maricela Lizcano never dreamed of working for NASA. In fact, she wasn’t planning on furthering her education until she had a revelation in her late twenties. “I was watching one of those forensic shows, and I loved the way they caught the criminals with science,” said Lizcano, research materials engineer at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. “I wanted to be able to do that. I realized I should be studying science and engineering.” It took Lizcano about ten years to prepare mentally and financially to go back to school, and during that time, she received some startling news. “I found out that I was losing my sight, and it was very scary,” Lizcano said. “I think that was one of the things that tossed me off the rails. I had so many questions: ‘What am I going to do? How am I going to work or go to school? How quickly am I losing my vision?’ There were no answers.” Lizcano was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a rare genetic eye disease that occurs when fatty material builds up on the macula — the small part of the retina needed for sharp, central vision. “My Stargardt disease started on the outer edges of my macula, and over time, it grew to the center,” Lizcano said. “By the time I was 45 years old, it had pretty much taken all of my central vision, and now I rely on my peripheral vision to see.” Eventually, Lizcano viewed this as another obstacle to hurdle, no different from any others she had experienced in her life. She attended the University of Texas–Pan American, now called the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She started during a second summer session, easing her way to full-time attendance while also holding a job. Because of her new disability, she couldn’t see what professors were writing on the board. She taught herself to listen intently to the topics being discussed in the lecture, then after class, she read the textbook and rewrote the lecture notes using special magnification tools. “It took that much longer, but you learn to adapt,” Lizcano said. “There are certain skills you develop because of the changes you have to make when you have a disability. I learned that I really have to listen.” After five years, Lizcano completed her mechanical engineering degree. She didn’t get a job right away after graduation, so she continued her education and earned master’s and doctorate degrees. “I can’t just look at my disability as some great thing that I really had to overcome,” Lizcano said. “I think a lot of people overcome many obstacles because we are driven by the desire to achieve things. You don’t see the challenges as challenges, you just see them as something to conquer to get to your goal.” In 2010, former President Barack Obama signed an executive order to increase federal employment of individuals with disabilities. The executive order directed executive departments and agencies to improve their efforts to employ workers with disabilities through increased recruitment, hiring, and retention of these individuals. “Through the Workforce Recruitment Program, I had the opportunity to interview with representatives from federal agencies,” Lizcano said. “I heard nothing for a long time, but then suddenly I got an email from NASA Glenn asking if I’d present my research.” She accepted a job as a research materials engineer and now leads a team working on high-voltage materials for electrified aircraft. She collaborates with various universities to develop composite insulation materials and lightweight conductors. Even now working at NASA, Lizcano faces challenges that she finds ways to overcome. She depends on her fellow colleagues to carpool to work and accessibility tools — like the magnifier app — to use her computer. “Understanding my needs allowed me to get over the fact that I lost my independence,” Lizcano said. “It was a mind shift to be all right with asking for help.” Lizcano’s recommends a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics career to anyone looking for a challenge or excitement. “We’re always solving problems. If you’re one of those people who really wants to make a difference in the world, STEM careers are a good place to start,” Lizcano said. “Any challenge that you may have in result of a disability is no different than the challenge you’re trying to solve, and it will give you the motivation and unique skills you need to be successful.” NASA is in a Golden Era of aeronautics and space exploration. In partnership with commercial and private businesses, NASA is currently making history with significant missions such as Artemis, Quesst, and electrified aviation. The NASA’s Modern History Makers series highlights members of NASA Glenn’s workforce who make these remarkable missions possible. A Bit of Beyond Series Fic (that no one asked for)
Maricela cried between the ceremony and reception. It’s not that she regretted what she’d done.
Marrying Alexei had been the best shot that either of them had at freedom.
It was just that she’d always hoped to be able to marry for the sort of passionate love that everyone worshiped in Sector One. But the granddaughter of the prophet had other responsibilities. And, as long as she remained unwed, scheming mothers and ambitious sons would constantly be conspiring to keep her from the duties that truly mattered.
No, marrying Alexei had been the right thing to do. He’d only confirmed it when he’d stumbled upon her in the gardens before their reception, pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket to carefully wipe away her tears before using it to dry his own eyes.
“This isn’t the end of love,” he’d sniffed as he turned his face toward the setting sun.
“No. Especially not for you. You know I won’t stand between you and Hugo.” “No, I know that. It’s just a matter of getting to him to believe me. Or look me in the eye.” His jaw had clenched, but he’d cleared his throat, straightened his shoulders, and curled his mouth into his wry smile. “But for now, we should dance. The whole Sector waits.”
And so they danced.
“You’re either an asshole or you greatly undervalue your own worth. I’ve been having trouble deciding.” The man before her jumped and turned. When he saw her face, he bowed lowly. “Princess, I’m sorry - whatever I’ve done --” “It’s more what you haven’t done.” “I’m sorry, your--” “He loves you.”
Broad shoulders snapped back and a brow previously furrowed in concern smooths into a darkly shuttered expression.
“With all due respect, Your Highness --” “It’s not my business, I know. Not really, but --” “As Alexei’s wife, it’s certainly your business, but it’s no longer mine.” “Which is a shame. Because it breaks my heart to know that my friend’s happy ending is actually possible, but he won’t get it anyway.” “I may only be a gardener, but that doesn’t mean I want to sit at the edge of the table begging for scraps. I won’t be a dirty secret.”
At that, Maricela reached out. Hugo was as large as Alexei had said he was. But, he stopped at Maricela’s touch.
“No one’s asking you to be. He did this for you.” “Because the husband of a Rios is even more attainable than a minor noble’s son? Right.”
“Because my grandfather taught that love was above all - above class and wealth and power. The nobles in this Sector may have forgotten that, but I haven’t. And neither has Alexei. Just. Just talk to him.”
It took a couple of weeks, but Hugo did reach out.
Which Maricela found out only after inquiring with the palace guards when Alexei missed dinner two nights in a row.
“Marry me, Nita.”
“What?”
The temple gardens were uncommonly quiet. In the distance, Alexei sat on a bench, book in hand, as Hugo bent to his work. Alexei laughed at some something on his page and called out to share it with Hugo. Nita and Maricela were too far away to hear the specifics, but Hugo blushed prettily, and Alexei’s smile softened into something unbearably gentle.
“Marry me, Nita.”
“Maricela--”
“No, you’ve waited for -- you’ve waited long enough Nita. And I know your mom’s been coming down on you harder.” “I’m not looking for your pity, Maricela.”
“I’m not looking to give you any. I just want to see you happy again. You used to smile. I used to smile. Maybe not like that,” she pointed toward Hugo and Alexei, “but it’d make me happy to see you free to help your siblings.”
“But bound in a marriage.”
“That look bound to you? Nita, you know he --” Maricela catches herself. They have a code, a sacred code, that one’s impossible love isn’t talked about. “If you ever -- I wouldn’t stop you.”
Nita paused, seemed to take a moment to actually think about the offer on the table.
“I hate to give my mom a victory,” she laughed finally. “Marrying a damned Rios.” Maricela chuckled. “Sure, but you’ll only be my second spouse. And, if I want my new baby sisters and brothers to become little designers and gardeners or marry their kitchen staff, she’ll hardly be able to argue.”
“Oh man, who could argue with a damned Rios!” Nita laughed. “Okay, honey, let’s get married.”
They married quietly, another message to Estela Reyes that Nita’s life would no longer be hers to control. She’d exchanged vows with Nita as Hugo exchanged vows with Alexei.
Nita’d signed the papers after Hugo making her Maricela’s third. The smile on her face when she did so, it made it all worth it.
As a concession to the powerful Reyes family, though, they’d scheduled the wedding for the week before the Reyes’ annual party. They kept the nuptials quiet until they arrived at the Reyes compound and gave her the opportunity to announce to the world that the Reyes and Rios families were combined at last.
Of course, Hunter decided to get his head out of his ass after Maricela had gotten Nita to marry her.
It was fine. Her vision of sharing quiet morning with Nita in bed, huddled together against the cool air, even if it was just as friends, wouldn’t come to pass.
But, she wouldn’t trade Nita’s smile for anything.
Marrying Hunter in an unseemly spectacle at the Reyes’ party the next year was the gift that finally seemed to earn Estela Reyes’s forgiveness, even if the woman couldn’t quite bring herself to say Hunter’s name without the creases around her eyes tightening.
The night was warm, and the press of the crowd had become unbearable. She’d normally find her way to Nita when she needed a moment away, but, tonight, Nita belonged to no one but Hunter.
She glowed in his arms, and he’d hardly let her go save for an obligatory dance with his other new spouses. She’d been sure to keep her dance with him short and to talk only of Nita’s beauty. He’d picked up on it shortly before the music came to an end and was clearly embarrassed.
“Forgive me, little Mari,” he’d whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“For what? She’s glorious.”
And then she’d made her way to the gardens. For a breath. For a moment away from her glowing spouses. A moment to wrestle her wretched heart into place.
“Princess.”
Maricela gasped, and then relaxed as Ivan stepped forward hands raised in silent apology.
“I didn’t mean to startle you.” “Which is why you approached without sound from the shadowed maze,” she huffed.
His lips tilted in the whisper of a smile.
“It’s hard to break training.”
“I wouldn’t know. I’ve been consciously resisting training since I was a little girl.”
“Which is why you’ve dutifully married not once, not twice, but four times.”
“One a gardener, the other a Rider. I’m a walking scandal.”
“And for all that rebellion, you never smile.”
“Of course I do.”
He shook his head. In the moonlight, his hair shown silver, and his blue eyes were dark. He looked as she imagined a knight would, one from the tales of old about a round table served by faithful warriors.
It hurt to look at him.
“I’ve beautiful spouses, kind ones. My people flourish, and I’ve finally been able to renovate and expand our refugee housing. I’ve got everything to smile about.”
“Like I said: you’ve been dutiful.”
“I don’t serve my people out of duty.”
“That’s not - I didn’t mean - just because it’s your duty doesn’t mean it’s wrong. And it doesn’t mean you didn’t do it because you cared. I just meant.” He paused, clearly at a loss.
And in all the years that Maricela had known Ivan, in all the years she’d quietly watched him and tried not to watch him, this was the most he’d ever said to her at one time.
His sincerity was clear.
“I just meant that you spend so much of yourself serving others. But, who serves you?”
“Ivan. I have more than enough of people looking to serve the Prophet’s granddaughter. I don’t--”
“I’m not talking about serving Maricela Rios. Who takes care of you, Mari?”
There were any number of correct answers that come to mind:
She and Alexei share breakfast together every morning, no matter how late a night he has. She and Hugo have exchanged books every week for the last year and a half. Nita, as ever, has remained her best friend and partner in work and fun. Even Hunter had become a friend.
But there was no room in Ivan’s gaze for anything less than complete honesty.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “It wasn’t in our terns & agreements.”
“You weren’t supposed to have contracts when you married.”
“Oh no?”
“No. No, I --”
“You what, Ivan?”
“I stayed away, so you could have something real, something forever.”
“Well, I’ve got that, friendships and contracts, and I’m sure kids that will come.”
“And what about passion?”
“Dammit, Ivan, what do you want me to say? You stayed away!” It comes out more of a sob than she intended, but it’d been so long.
She’d spent years second guessing whether the heat between them had been one-sided, whether the intensity in his gaze was hers alone or just the wishful longing of an infatuated mind. Whether the quiet glimpses into his life were shared intentionally in a show of trust or were merely the work of convenient timing and fatigue.
“I didn’t think it would matter.”
“Why wouldn’t it matter? Why wouldn’t you matter?”
“I’m just a Rider.”
“A servant to your people just like me.”
She hadn’t intentionally moved closer. She wasn’t sure if she had or if it was he who moved. But he was there, pushing hair away from her face all the same.
“And it’s exhausting sometimes isn’t it.”
The look in his eyes was tender and kind, and Maricela leaned into the broad expanse of his chest.
“Let me take care of you, Mari.”
“Please.”

San Ysidro McDonald’s Massacre
The San Ysidro McDonald’s Massacre occurred at a McDonald’s in the town San Ysidro of San Diego,CA on July 19, 1984. The perpetrator was 41 year old James Huberty, who fatally shot 21 people and wounded 19 others before being killed by police.
His wife, Etna, asked where he was going with a small arsenal of weapons and he replied with “I’m going to hunt humans.” He had been at that same Mcdonald’s with his wife and children earlier that day before the massacre. James walked into the Mcdonald’s with a semiautomatic rifle, a semiautomatic pistol and a 12-gauge pump shotgun. He told his family, “Goodbye, I won’t be back”.
On that day 45 people were in that Mcdonald’s. He then started killing and wounding many others inside and outside of the San Ysidro Mcdonald’s. Police then interfered and 27 yr old police SWAT sniper named Charles Foster sniped James and killed him instantly. Huberty shouted things about fighting in the Vietnam War but was never actually part of the military.
A permanent memorial to those killed in the massacre was unveiled on December 13, 1990. The victims were:

housing insecurity & homelessness
There’s a lot of discussion in my classes about homelessness, and in the interactions we have had with the high school students and community college class. Here are a few articles from California Health Report.
Bill Would Allow Homeless Students to Park Overnight at Community Colleges   Caitlin Yoshiko Kandil • Mar 11, 2019
An estimated 20 percent of the state’s 2.1 million community college students have experienced homelessness or don’t have a stable place to live, according to a report released this month by California Community Colleges. Many of them rely on their vehicles for shelter.
“The most difficult thing about sleeping in your car is trying to find a place to park and sleep, and being able to sleep comfortably knowing that no one’s going to come by, that neighbors aren’t walking by saying, ‘Who’s sleeping out there?” said Brianna Rodriguez, a former student at East Los Angeles College who previously experienced homelessness. ... “A lot of times people don’t associate homelessness with students,” Rodriguez said. “But it’s an issue, and it’s becoming more and more prevalent now.”
A new bill aims to help community college students across the state by ensuring they have a secure place to stay in their cars at night. The Safe Lots bill, A.B. 302, was introduced in January and would allow community college students to use campus parking lots overnight, as long as they have paid their fees, are enrolled in coursework and are in good standing with the college.
Who Becomes Homeless? Data Paints a Startling Picture Caitlin Yoshiko Kandil • Jun 6, 2018
Another persistent idea is that homelessness is a lifestyle choice. A report from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department—which showed that of 1,093 contacts made in the Santa Ana Riverbed encampment last year, 910 refused help—is often used as evidence.
“From that report, county officials concluded that this population doesn’t want help, they’re refusing services, so what can we do?” said Sarah Gregory, a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County. “From there they decided these folks are a lost cause, and we can step up criminalization, ticketing and arrest.”
But these numbers are misleading, said Gregory. The assessments were conducted in public alongside law enforcement, so individuals may not have felt comfortable accepting help. Meanwhile, another survey, conducted last year by the nonprofit City Net showed that 81 percent of those living in the Riverbed encampment were interested in case management that would help them out of homelessness.
David Ramirez, a 33-year-old who lived in the Riverbed until it was cleared, said that the perception that the homeless don’t want help is untrue—but that county services often don’t match homeless people’s needs.
Ramirez and his partner, for example, tried taking refuge at the Courtyard, a bus terminal-turned shelter in Santa Ana, but he quickly found that the site didn’t accommodate his disabled partner of 13 years, since the crowded and chaotic conditions of the shelter—which houses 400 people—exacerbated his symptoms of bipolar disorder.
“I said, ‘This isn’t going to work at all,’” said Ramirez. “I tried it and it was all bad. That’s why I refused to go into a shelter after the Courtyard—it was all bad.”
...
Despite common depictions of the homeless in Orange County, the population is diverse.
More than one-quarter of Orange County’s homeless population is families with kids, according to last year’s point-in-time count, which put the total number of homeless children in the county at 754. The fastest growing segment of the homeless population, meanwhile, is senior women, said Weitzman.
Another quarter are survivors of domestic violence, according to the point-in-time count.
“When women, children and families experience domestic violence, one of the primary fears they have is being homeless,” said Maricela Rios-Faust, chief executive of Human Options, which serves survivors of domestic violence in Orange County.
After fleeing their homes, survivors continue to be at risk for homelessness, said Rios-Faust. Women often break leases to leave an abusive relationship or have bad credit because an abusive partner ran up their credit card bills—both of which can hurt their ability to find new housing. And many women struggle to reenter the work force.
“It’s a very vulnerable population,” said Rios-Faust, “and a population that has not traditionally had a voice and remains in the shadows of the larger homeless issue.”

~**~ ARC Review: Ivan (Gideon’s Riders #3) by Kit Rocha ~**~ (Link in bio) Release Date: March 28th, 2018 Description As the sheltered princess of Sector One, Maricela’s life is defined by duty: to her people and to her family. Her wealth and influence have allowed her to build a better world, but they come with a price—the responsibility to secure political stability with a practical marriage. Maricela cherishes the idea of marrying for love, but there’s not much romance in the endless line of suitors interested only in prestige and power. And her handsome, brooding new bodyguard isn’t helping the situation. Ivan is the perfect, deadly warrior, a man trained from childhood to be the ultimate protector to the Rios family. His focus on keeping her safe is intense–and a little intoxicating. When the threat of danger cracks his icy control, Maricela realizes she’s not the only one fighting against temptation. Ivan knows that the blood on his hands makes him unworthy of the pure-hearted princess. But from the first kiss, their forbidden affair feels inevitable. He can give her a glimpse of life outside her gilded cage and a lover who wants the woman instead of the crown. The only thing he can never do is promise her forever. Because spurning her noble suitors to marry her bodyguard wouldn’t just be a scandal. It could set off a political firestorm that would tear Sector One apart. #KitRocha #Ivan #GideonsRiders #SectorOne #ARC #Review #ComingSoon #dystopian #romance #bookstagram #blogger #ontheblog #bibliophile #bookworm #booksnwineblog #blessed #bookishAF #bookgeek #hawaiigirl #igreads #readersofinstagram #OKane4Life #TeamSix #TeamBren #ReviewCrew

INVERNO
--------------------------------------------------
ODE
Acolitando nuvens brancas não fossem.
           Pastor do céu anjos houvesse.
