thinking about caesar's moments of interaction with katniss. how there's so much. guilt 🥺

(trilogy timeline spoilers ahead)

the rebellion had always wanted to have a spartacus for their main campaign. they've waited for someone like katniss until katniss came around.

but once she's there! and the rebellion is organising, caesar sees just how much she is just a kid! she's a young girl and he knows the rebellion and the good of the country matters more, but that's one of the many tributes he's walked into the arena (figuratively speaking). he's seen all their lost and innocent and frightened faces and katniss is no different.

but the rebellion is more important and that's what matters.

at least he tells himself that until mockingjay. until the guilt really sweeps him up.

one of the most pivotal scenes of interaction between katniss and caesar are planned right there, and it's so! heart breaking because he sees the shadows of the rebellion on her. he sees what it took from her!

this is also one of the pivotal and striking differences between plutarch and caesar. plutarch's reasoning had never been about the individual tributes (nor, really, about them as a collective outside of "panem citizens").

but for caesar that was the main spark to join the rebellion. it was always about the tributes for him. he's been the contact with the victors, so the guilt hits him. and it's something he can never undo or repay.
