Come quasi tutti i mesi, anche il mese scorso sono andata dalle mie parrucchiere (orgogliosamente sempre le stesse da quando avevo 14 anni) per il taglio, perché la maledizione dei capelli corti è che devi necessariamente starci dietro, per quanto poi la mattina quando li asciughi ci metti cinque minuti e non mezz'ora. MA la volta scorsa Manuela ha un po' esagerato col taglio (cosa che non mi sposta più di tanto eh, ricrescono...) solo che per resettare un po' la situazione adesso mi tocca farli crescere un po' prima di tagliare di nuovo. Avendo io quel simpatico tipo di capelli folto come la giungla amazzonica in pieno rigoglio, spesso come il tronco di una sequoia, non abbastanza mosso da creare soffici ed armoniosi boccoli quando sono lunghi, ma abbastanza da gonfiarsi come il miglior panettone artigianale dopo tre lievitazioni... adesso praticamente sembro il funghetto di Super Mario.

G. K. Chesterton pone bastante énfasis en que su biografía de Stevenson está centrada en sus obras y no en su vida, y por esto mismo quien no haya leído sus obras (al menos la mayoría de ellas) se perderá de mucho. Este ha sido mi caso: todavía hay muchas de sus novelas que no he leído (entre ellas hay algunas de las que se consideran más importantes), lo que me ha llevado a no comprender del todo muchas de las reflexiones que el autor realiza. A esto hay que agregar que no estoy demasiado puesto en la crítica literaria inglesa del siglo XIX, así que desconozco casi en su totalidad qué es a lo que estaba respondiendo exactamente Chesterton cuando lo defiende de sus críticos. Aun con todo, este libro contiene no pocas reflexiones interesantes sobre el querido Tusitala que valen la pena: saber lo que Chesterton pensaba sobre tal o cual novela o cuento en particular que te gusta, aunque le dedique un pequeño párrafo, es ciertamente valioso. Mientras más se conozca la obra de Stevenson antes de leer este libro, más se puede aprender de él.

Y ya que estoy, aprovecharé esta publicación para comentar muy rápidamente las adaptaciones de El extraño caso del doctor Jekyll y el señor Hyde que he estado viendo estos días. La más antigua que vi fue la de 1931 (dirigida por Rouben Mamoulia y protagonizada por Fredric March), y es por muchísimo la mejor de todas: innovadora en lo que respecta a efectos especiales desde el primer minuto, dotada con unos actores buenísimos, una atmósfera oscura muy propia del libro y un buen argumento (además de un toque ligeramente erótico que le viene bastante bien a una película de este tipo), es tan completa que no sería exagerado decir que es una pequeña obra maestra de su época. El Jekyll atractivo y carismático (por lo mismo me recuerda a Ivor Novello) interpretado por March es la mejor actuación que he visto en ambos personajes (más bien personalidades); tan bueno es que, por ser la primera que vi, no pude dejar de sentir que las otras interpretaciones eran malas copias. Y si esa es sin duda la mejor, también es claro que la peor fue la de 1960 (dirigida por Terence Fisher y protagonizada por Paul Massie), que es tan mala que casi llega al ridículo. Por mucho que la haya producido la mítica Hammer, tanto las actuaciones como el argumento son verdaderamente lamentables. Respecto al argumento, el problema no es que no siga al pie de la letra a la novela, pues la adaptación anterior tampoco lo hace (ni esa ni ninguna de las que vi, por cierto), sino que los cambios hechos fueron pésimos. Ver, por ejemplo, a un Hyde guapo y delicado flirteando después de ver al Hyde violento y abusivo (que es lo que corresponde a su desinhibida perversidad) coaccionar a Ivy en la otra película resulta hasta cómico. Lo único que podría rescatar es que aparece el grandísimo Christopher Lee, que siempre es un gusto ver. Para terminar, en medio de los dos extremos están la de 1951 (dirigida y protagonizada por Mario Soffici) y la de 1990 (dirigida por David Wickes y protagonizada por Michael Caine). La mejor de ambas es la primera, que es una versión argentina. Es, aun siguiendo más bien poco la obra original, la más fiel de las cuatro, lo que definitivamente le hace ganar unos puntos. Además de esto, lo que más destacaría de ella es la atmósfera oscura que se le dio: el Hyde siempre ensombrecido le da un genial toque tenebroso, lo que pega bastante bien con su caracterización física. La última, que es la más policíaca de todas, no destaca por ser particularmente mala ni buena; es una peliculita televisiva algo entretenida, pero sin más. Además de ser la que tiene los mejores actores y el mejor argumento, la adaptación de 1931 también es, a pesar de tratarse de la más antigua, la que tiene los mejores efectos especiales de todas. Si se quiere ver una, definitivamente tiene que ser esa.

The next box set to get through comes from Criterion: Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project Vol 4. I wasn't crazy about Volume 3 and swore I'd not buy anymore installments (I was in the midst of a major anti-cinema jag thanks to the pandemic) but this was a welcomed Christmas gift from 2022 and I'm finally ready to begin watching it. And if the rest are as savage as this film was, I'm ready for them!

Está considerada una película magnífica, con una gran nota en todas las plataformas dedicadas a la catalogación de películas. Una de las cintas más importantes del cine argentino y una de las mejores de cine negro.El propósito es bueno, y la confrontación de intereses también. Los diálogos rápidos y vivaces, y la escenografía general parece interesante. A medida que avanza muestra más interés, del mero costumbrismo pueblerino, cerrado y tradicional camina hacia aspectos más sombríos de las existencia humana. La envidia, el cotilleo, la maledicencia, el cotilleo y la mendicidad moral invaden la casa y la existencia de todos los personajes femeninos. En los masculinos predomina la envidia, el no saber qué ocurre, el desconocer qué pasa. El retrato de las mujeres como indeseables es magnífico, el de los hombres como cotillas muy certero.La trama se va enredando como esas conversaciones estúpidas en las que no se sabe muy bien de qué se está hablando pero se tiene plena constancia de que el discurso se deteriora a cada minuto que pasa. La cinta tiene una mezcla de Laura (Otto Preminger, 1944) y de La mujer del cuadro (Fritz Lang, 1944), películas que necesariamente tuvo que ver el director, pues llevaba años rodando cintas y además instituyó una asociación de cineastas argentinos. Vamos, que era un hombre de cine.Mantiene un formato interesante, con secuencias largas que explican las cosas y se encadenan.Me ha gustado mucho, es muy interesante el estudio de los personajes y la trama te atrapa en un no sabe qué va a ocurrir
