Creatures That Sparkle: Beautiful Creatures
The images in this book will make you gasp in astonishment at the sparkle and glow of the jewels and the skill of the artisans who made them. Published by Rizzoli and the American Museum of Natural History and written by Marion Fasel who explains the origins and evolution of these beauties and who made and who wore them, this book runs from butterflies and birds and through shells and seahorses to end with mammals. It runs to 150 pages and almost every one has something sparkling up at you.
You see at top Forever Dancing-Bright Star Brooch by Wallace Chan from 2013 which contains brown diamonds, real butterfly wings, mother of pearl and more. Butterflies captured jewelry makers’ eyes long before then and the next image has a large butterfly from 1936 by Suzanne Belperron with all manner of gemstones, and smaller ones designed by her two decades later. The lion on the coral branch is made of yellow diamonds with ruby eyes and was created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1968. I have always thought of costume jewelry as whimsical, and celebrated its affordability, but it looks like even fine jewelry makers enjoy whimsicality. I will now go break out my own sparkly starfish with blue and turquoise stones and ponder where I can wear it next.

I am so excited to be ahead of the trend! I have been wearing brooches, pins and boutonnieres for the last few years and even rocked one by @fleurdpins on the @bluejacketfashionshow runway! —————————————————————@newyorktimes The Brooch Is Back, Baby By Linda Dyett Widely considered stodgy and trite, brooches have been seriously out of fashion ever since the power-suit-ridden “Dynasty” years. Grandmothers have drawers full of them. Catherine O’Hara, playing the loony Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” wears them incessantly — even when going to bed. Jewelers rarely list them on their e-commerce shopping menus (though they do sell them). And from the 1950s through the ’80s, they acquired a reputation “as daytime, luncheon jewels,” Marion Fasel, a fine jewelry historian, said. Bulgari Serpenti Collection
Marion Fasel
Assouline , New York 2013, 200 pages
euro 100,00*
A partire dagli evidenti richiami pittorici.
Since the 1940s, with the creation of bracelet-watches in the form of a snake, the serpent has been one of Bulgari’s most emblematic and eternal symbols. Representing everything from birth, rebirth, beauty, sex appeal, and wisdom in Greek mythology and Roman civilization, the snake motif also alludes to founder Sotirio Bulgari’s Greek heritage and adopted home of Rome. This new tome explores the Serpenti collection’s rich heritage, distinguished elegance, and status as one of the Roman jewelry house’s contemporary icons. Featuring imagery of Elizabeth Taylor, who famously sported a serpent-shaped watch while filming Cleopatra in 1962; Marisa Berenson; and Diana Vreeland, who, in one of her legendary Vogue memos, declared her fascination for the snake motif, this oversize book speaks to the timelessness, sensuality, and beauty of Bulgari’s Serpenti collection.

JEWELLERY BLOGGERS' Most Current TOP 7 JEWELLERY TRENDS FOR 2017
Jewellery can be a fabulous medium in which to work. We get to meet many creative and daring clients, talented goldsmiths and of course the worldwide influencers that ensure the latest jewellery styles continue being front-of-mind. We're very thrilled, therefore, to show seven of the Top Jewellery Trends to get 20 17 by the perspective of leading jewellery writers, inspired by the most current runway and emerging design topics in the world of jewellery design. 1 Colour Riot Rachael Taylor, jewellery writer and writer for The Jewellery Editor tells AENEA: "After a long desire for delicate, minimal diamond-set jewellery, we're getting to find a return on colour and scale this past year. Bright tooth and big colored diamonds will light up cocktail rings and statement earrings." We have seen natural bead pieces to the Givenchy run way, and Christopher Kane decorate Crocs with chunks of glittering quartz. Enamel, meanwhile, evokes a sense of ancient jewels with echoes of Italian and Indian design aesthetics. Katerina Perez high-lights 'large rough stones' as vibration up jewellery design, likening the riot of colour in jewellery to the lively use of glowing tones we're witnessing in cosmetics. "Stone cutters make an effort to style stones so that their virtues are made prominent, and their faults disguised. But at the long run stones might be removed from their uniqueness becoming just another ruby, sapphire or emerald," she informs AENEA. "Therefore, if you love gems as these were created with nature, then it's time to get them out of this box and put them on. Wearing bits with announcement stones especially in their own demanding form will soon be in my own opinion a sexy trend of 20 17." Two Hoop-Hoop Hooray Big, small, lanky or fearless, hoop ear rings would be the style to watch -- and wear -- in 2017. On the runways of Marni, and Loewe, flat perspex fashions and daring single decoration showed how divergent the hoop trend could become. With bold, rigid chain layouts, Ralph Lauren is your hottest major label so as to put in hoops to the jewellery sets. "It was the models at Altuzarra that stole the show with all spirals in crimson, yellow and baby blue adoring their ears," notes jewellery influencer Beanie Major, while reviewing the most modern runways on her site Indtl.com. Marion Fasel, the founder and director of online jewellery magazine The Adventurine, links our hankering for hoops to the comeback of a certain fashion era. "Seventies silhouettes are creating a come back in jewellery, making hoops in every shape and size look fresh again," she informs AENEA. There's little uncertainty 2016 was the season of this choker. From black rope fashions to lace ribbons, pearl embellished diamond and chains sockets, the choker made its own mark. However 2017 will see that the choker resisted with the fearless power of stainless-steel cage and collars -- wraps of metal, chains or even fabrics which encircle the neck and also make the wearer stand tall. "The skate trend was gaining momentum in the past half a year, culminating in certain genuinely exceptional high jewellery debuted by the French maisons during Paris Couture Week," wrote jewellery writer Claire Roberts, whilst the 20 17 jewellery styles began to show themselves. "A first outing on the runways in March, the oversized mono-earring was shoulder-skimming in 2013, with one thread of golden or even a swatch of cloth which makes the most impact," notes Anne-Sophie Mallard of vogue.fr. Draping Brands or blended cloth layouts that cascade down to the shoulders will be worn independently or matched with a bigger drop or climber. Asymmetry and also Mismatching ear ring will try to generate drama and intrigue; styles will soon be lively but also powerful. "mis-matched earrings are poised to over take in 20 17 following the AW16 fashion shows at which Alexander Wang and Sonia Rykiel revealed them in a fresh light, thereby igniting the general public attention again," Perez explains. 5 Rose-tinted Gems These softer, natural hues follow the proliferation of Pantone's blush-pink 'rose quartz' colour in 20-16, that has steadily squeezed into fine jewellery design, recorded by stones like pink opal, morganite, and also the above mentioned sapphires and rose quartz. These gentler colors, despite and even because of the current global climate, will continue to elicit femininity and womanhood in jewelry layout. A relaxing touch amid boisterous, bold and often sculptural shapes. "Once more, the colour pink is called to accomplish nicely in 2017, not just with fashion pieces but together with watches and jewellery too," Stefanie Mändlein, manager of German jewellery show Inhorgenta. "The pink fashion matches the assumed trend metal of 20 17 -- yellow gold -- and gold will also be complemented by pink." L-R: AENEA's Candy Collection set with natural-hue diamonds; AENEA's emerald and diamond Quadrifoglio set; Amy Adams at the SAG Awards Though the fad for asymmetry, more chains and mis-matched styles may be tremendous in fashion, the area of nice and high jewellery appears to be keeping one foot firmly in convention, because of the allure of Hollywood. With awards season upon us, the red rugs are teeming with dazzling jewelry made to turn heads. Therefore, will 2017 re-invigorate the classics? "The most unexpected trend from the red carpet up to now this year is matching collections," says Marion Fasel. "Emma Stone wore earrings and a necklace that matched into a significant scene of La-la-land. They say that you need three sightings to be a fashion, so I'm following this closely." AENEA enjoys pearls, especially presenting them in fresh and surprising ways -- clashed with colored diamonds and lassoed around the throat, or flowing out of the ear including droplets of water. Following jewellery's many interpretations of the timeless round pearl, 2017 marks the season of this baroque; a opportunity to celebrate undulating, organic and curvaceous pearls in all of their glory. Barbara Palumbo, the writer and jewellery enthusiast behind Adornmentality, shares her recognition: "I am watching baroque pearls used in a contemporary, fashion-forward way this year, including in minimalist bracelets along with gold and silver along with ear markers emphasized with diamonds." "I have even seen them in necklaces designed for males, that helps to place a modern twist on what exactly is recognised as a classic, natural gemstone."

Jewelry That Boogies When You Do
Tumblr media
Saoirse Ronan wore Fernando Jorge’s Disco earrings on the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala in January.
A client recently told Solange Azagury-Partridge, the designer of her Fringe ring — a series of diamond-set gold chains that drape across the fingers and move freely — that the ring attracts more attention than anything else she owns.
“It does the flirting for you,” Ms. Azagury-Partridge said. “You can be very buttoned-up, but the ring is dancing away on your hand.”
Movement is an underused and underappreciated quality in jewelry today. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the en tremblant technique, the complex engineering by which diamonds were set on tiny concealed springs to quiver with the wearer’s every move, was widely used, at least in part because gem-cutting techniques at the time could not be relied upon to provide sufficient sparkle under candlelight.
“Everything moved then,” said Marion Fasel, a historian and editor of The Adventurine, a website about jewelry. “It was part of the creation of jewelry at the time.”
The complexity involved in creating a jewel that incorporates movement, whether it be en tremblant or a piece that transforms from a necklace to a brooch to a ring, meant that movement for the most part eventually fell out of favor. Items like the Van Cleef & Arpels transformable zipper necklace or Bulgari’s hinged Serpenti pieces have endured, but over all the fashion has been for a more static, casual look.
Now, however, a number of contemporary jewelers are finding that the mesmerizing effect achieved by motion is worth the considerable effort required.
Fernando Jorge’s Brilliant collection has attracted as much attention for the way it moves as for the way it looks. Mr. Jorge, a Brazilian designer based in London, said that when clients tried on his Disco earrings (the large version of which cost $54,000), they could not stop moving their heads as they looked in the mirror.
The oversize pear-shaped silhouettes of parallel diamond-set gold bars, connected by a flexible central spine of concealed hinges, are precisely balanced so they move easily when the wearer does. “The beauty of their movement draws you to them,” he said.
The seemingly effortless Calder mobile-like effect was, in fact, achieved after many hours of experimentation in the workshop. Mr. Jorge set out to explore all the qualities that affect a diamond’s appearance, like the refractive qualities of the cut, the setting style and, of course, the movement. But he said he hadn’t realized until the piece was completed how striking the result would be. “Any movement in jewelry is complicated to achieve, but it creates an immediate emotional reaction,” he said.
The earrings are named for a disco ball, which, he said, “without movement or light, does nothing.”
They have since become the best-selling pieces in the collection and have been worn on the red carpet by the Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan and Tracee Ellis Ross, star of the TV series “Black-ish.” Doubtless seeing the earrings sashay down the red carpet with their wearer highlights another reason for renewed appreciation of movement in jewelry, as does the dominance of video in social media.
Tumblr media
The popularity of Instagram, for example, has provided a kind of animated store window for many jewelers. “It demands a Boomerang,” Ms. Fasel said of Mr. Jorge’s collection, referring to the Instagram-owned app that loops short videos.
Delfina Delettrez has made a short video for her latest collection, called ZIP code, to illustrate how movement is an integral part of its concept. She has long been intrigued by the idea of motion in jewelry, she said, and uses it to playful effect. In one drop earring, for example, a silicon-lined pearl mimics a zipper; the wearer can easily slide it up and down the two parallel gold wires that hold the piece securely in the ear.
“Throughout my work I like to play with the idea of contrasts,” she said. “I’m always incorporating a sense of fun into the designs to create an element of surprise in each piece.”
Jessica McCormack has lightened the seriousness of important diamonds in her new Cable Car collection, resulting from a client’s commissioning a convertible sautoir with 15 two-carat diamonds. The jeweler’s head craftsman created a spring mechanism inside each collet setting, so the diamonds can slide along the gold rope chain. The piece can be worn as a choker, bolo necklace or wraparound bracelet. “My focus was on creating something that works whether you’re doing the school run, attending a board meeting or dancing on tables,” Ms. McCormack said.
Playfulness also has a role in Ms. Azagury-Partridge’s kinetic pieces. Her Spinner and Cog rings, bejeweled wheels that turn, appealing to the human habit of playing with one’s jewelry. “They’re like worry beads,” she said.
Her Lucky Number ring took months to perfect in the workshop, so the wearer could turn its digital clock-style diamond-baguette bars to create the wearer’s chosen number.
Not only did it need to work mechanically, it had to look and feel good on the hand, too. “Jewelry may be artistry, but you have to consider the human body,” Ms. Azagury-Partridge said, adding that comfort is paramount in any jewel.
Mr. Jorge echoed the idea, saying jewelry has an intimate and sensual relationship with the body. Of the flexible snake chain in his Fluid collection, he said, “I wanted the pieces to move with you and caress you.”
Anything that does not move freely, Ms. Azagury-Partridge said, is like a cartoon in which one part of the body arrives seconds after the rest. A piece that fails this test is destined for a lifetime in the jewelry box, she added.
“For something to be comfortable, there has to be a little give,” Ms. Fasel said. She recalled holding the snake necklace that Cartier created in 1968 for María Félix, the Mexican actress. It took a year to perfect the armature that created the serpent’s lifelike movement.
Tumblr media
The life that such motion can bring to a piece has kept movement in fashion in animal jewelry. At a Christie’s auction scheduled for Wednesday in Geneva, two hand-size starfish brooches by René Boivin carry top sales estimates of 100,000 Swiss francs and 120,000 Swiss francs ($100,400 and $120,500).
The lifelike undulations created by the complex network of hinges beneath their bejeweled surfaces are intrinsic to their charm, said Jean-Marc Lunel, a senior international specialist in Christie’s jewelry department, adding, “Realistic animal jewelry creations that move are the most desirable as it makes them come to life.”
Creatures also abound in Ms. Azagury-Partridge’s Metamorphosis collection from 2013. Created as objets d’art, the bespoke pieces can be disassembled to be worn as multiple pieces of jewelry.
In the Ark of the Covenant, for example, the miniature gold box decorated with multicolored cabochon stones opens to become an outsize cross pendant. “It’s like a toy for a woman,” she said. “It gives you so much pleasure.”
The charm of transformability is apparent in the new Marina B collection, which stays true to the creativity of Marina Bulgari, its founder and a granddaughter of Sotirio Bulgari, founder of the family jewelry brand.
It included a tasseled pendant of ruby and amethyst that can be worn four ways — with or without the swish of its matching tassel.
“A transformable jewel is a lot of extra work,” Ms. Fasel said, “but at the end of the day, it gives the owner more options in ways to wear it. That’s the sign of a great piece of jewelry.”

Princess Diana Jewels Are On Sale — For $12 Million
Tumblr media
(Photo: Getty Images)
You can now buy a small, glittering piece of Princess Diana’s legacy — if you have $12 million.
A diamond necklace known as the Swan Lake Suite, made of 178 diamonds and five pearls, has gone up for auction at the New York auction house Guernsey’s. Diana wore the necklace only once publicly, to a performance of the ballet at the Royal Albert Hall in June 1997. According to The Sun, the necklace was made with matching earrings. Diana never got to wear them, and wore the necklace out before the earrings were complete.
Tumblr media
A necklace worn by Princess Diana once on June 3, 1997, created by Asprey & Garrard, jewelers to the Royal Family, is to be auctioned. (Photo: Getty Images)
The necklace — which auctioneers nicknamed the “gift of the century” — was last sold in 2010 for £500,000 or close to $650,000 USD. The current owners are a Ukrainian couple who believe they can bring in the necklace’s original value of $12 million.
According to Marion Fasel, jewelry expert at The Adventurine, the jump in value may be due to the approaching 20th anniversary of Diana’s death. “I can only imagine the renewed memorials after twenty years are adding to the perceived value of the jewel,” Fasel tells Yahoo Style.
But the real draw is the hope that some of Diana’s renowned grace and beauty will rub off on whomever wears her jewelry. “Diana really loved jewelry and wore big pieces beautifully,” says Fasel. “Despite the fact that the necklace was made in the 1990s, it has a mid-century formal quality to it. Diana made it look, well, cool, wearing it with her fitted shift knee length dress.”
Tumblr media
(Photo: Getty images)
The Swan Lake Suite isn’t the only jewelry piece that royal watchers would probably enjoy wearing out for a night. Fasel reminds us that while most of Diana’s jewelry was borrowed from the Queen, she did occasionally borrow jewelry from designers on special occasions. She wore the $67,500 Double Crescent bracelet, for one, on loan from Verdura during a New York City trip in 1997. Today’s most recognizable piece of royal jewelry is still one of Diana’s pieces: Kate Middleton’s inherited sapphire and diamond engagement ring.
Diana willed all her jewelry to her sons, so if you happen to have extra millions of dollars lying around, this could be your last chance to own a real piece of princess memorabilia.

I was at the American Museum of Natural History to preview the Newly renovated Gem Halls. It started with a panel discussion moderated by Stellene Volandes who makes everything interesting! If it about jewelry it’s not interesting… it’s fascinating !!! Panelists were Ellen Futter President of the museum , Marion Fasel who curated the jewelry exhibition and Allison Mignone who’s name is on the halls as a major donor. We were then escorted to the exhibition galleries and WOW WOW WOW! That’s all you heard from everyone who stepped up to any vitrine. Here you see a 13 foot amethyst geode and a jellyfish pin owned by Bunny Mellon made for her by Jean Schlumberger in 1967. Look on my story and see my other favorite pieces. Then go to the museum and see the rest. #littlerickyrecommends #richardmishaandesign #theamericanmuseumofnaturalhistory @stellenevolandes @marionfasel @allisonmignone (at American Museum of Natural History) https://www.instagram.com/p/CP4gYpOhMIA/?utm_medium=tumblr

How to Buy Valentine’s Day Jewelry Based on Your Relationship Length
There are certainly a thousand methods particularly when it involves jewelry to display your love. Instagram/Jennifer Meyer
Should you lately realized that everything you completely coated in minds, and is just a perspective of reddish and white, that’s no chance. Really, it’s because of the proven fact that Evening is about delay and the part, perhaps you have determined things to purchase your spouse yet?
Here’s a touch from ladies everywhere: jewelry is wanted by us.
Significantly, 53 percentage of ladies stated they’d finish their connection when they didn’t get a V-Day present, based on Figure Mind. Although flowers and candies are good, an excellent pendant or perhaps a considerate set of earrings may proceed even more in speaking so just how unique your companion would be to you.
“A jewelry gift must occur at the start of the connection if it feels as though a dating interval and he really wants to create her pleased,” described Marion Fasel, a jewelry publisher and specialist who started the website The Adventurine.
