Medal of Honor Monday: Kyle Carpenter
On this day in 2010, a hero throws himself on a grenade, saving the life of his fellow Marine. Amazingly, Kyle Carpenter survived that terrible experience. Today, he is the youngest living recipient of the Medal of Honor.
Carpenter grew up a self-described “typical kid,” at least until he went on a high school mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The trip challenged him, and his changed focus prompted him to enlist in the military. “I joined the Marine Corps,” he explained, “because I wanted to devote my life, my body, if need be, to something greater than myself or any one individual.”
He did just that as he served near Marjah, Afghanistan, in 2010.
“It was very hot,” he remembered. “Very rugged, tough terrain to not only navigate, but to operate in. Flooded farmlands, flooded fields, wading through sewage canals to avoid IED’s. It was a difficult deployment. There was a lot of fighting every single day, sun up to sun down.”

A Marine and a Talib meet again after 11 years of trying to kill each other
A Marine and a Talib meet again after 11 years of trying to kill each other
The tea was hot. Room, oppressive and dusty. And the Taliban commander I was sitting with in a bullet-ridden building in southern Afghanistan tried to kill me a decade ago. As I tried to kill him. We both remember that morning very well: February 13, 2010, Marjah District, Helmand Province. We were almost the same age: 22. It was very cold. Mullah Abdul Rahim Gulab was part of a group of Taliban…

I always color Marjah’s left arm a touch greener than his right because when he was younger he was badly burned and I like the idea of the regrowth being a bit younger and less hardened than his originally bark-like skin

Okay I deadass can't remember if I asked for this before BUT Muslim Iida is living in my brain rent free and I NEED to know your thoughts girl
HAHDBHS AIGHT BESTIE ONLY FIR YOU
- this man Is the nice kind of haram police. He won’t go on tiktok and start bashing people for wylin out, but if there’s an argument about fiqh he’s the first one on the battlefield reprimanding guys about hayah and girls about their modesty
-is a true gentleman, sometimes girls get their hopes up thinking he’s mashallah oh-so-polite and dreamy, but they soon come to realize they’re not special-he really is just uniting the ummah
-completely oblivious to a lot of haram stuff his friends do, if they’re out in the back of the mosque parking lot he’ll match over to them, hands waving as he yells “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN. KHUTBAH/MAJLIS HAS STARTED ALREADY!”
And even if his friends still have the blunts in their mouths or are barely concealing the vape pens he still needs to be told “chill out dude we’re doing something here.” Only THEN will he gasp dramatically as he sees the offensive items and quite literally drag his boys by their ears into the prayer rooms.
-definitely is one of those doctor kids who have huge houses and throw big parties, but not the crazy fun kinds. Oh no, I’m talking about the parties where your parents lecture you in the car on the drive there to “make sure you don’t embarrass us, don’t laugh too loud and don’t eat like a pig.” When you get to the dinner everyone has their legs crossed, backs straight as arrows and hands carefully placed in silk-laden laps
-old fashioned, believes men and women should be separated it not in the toxic gross dude kind. He just wants to keep “the veil over everyone’s eyes to preserve your rightful place in jannat.”
-always unintentionally sucking up to marjahs and uncles. He’s the type of fob dude that goes like “VAAH VAAH KYA BAAT” when the imam makes a good point, and does this weird little bow thing with his hand in his chest when greeting people.

In a counterinsurgency, you’re only as good as the government you support, and in Marjah, the government didn’t have the support of the people.
David Kilcullen. Quoted in “A look at how the US-Led coalition lost Afghanistan’s Marjah district to the Taliban.” Stars and Stripes, 1 Jan. 2016.

Maddox: [Are] you all right?
Bryan: Am I ever all right? I shot myself today.
Maddox: Well that must be hard, seeing the person you love most in the world dead.
Bryan: The healing will be slow.
Maddox: How's he doing?
Karen: He's okay, normal, as normal as can be expected... He can get back out there.
Maddox: [to Bryan] Wow, you're a vision.
Bryan: These [gowns] are drafty. Not going to lie.
Maddox: They wear well though.
Bryan: I appreciate that...any news on George Jones?
Maddox: Spec Ops is on the ground, we're exhuming him tomorrow.
Bryan: We need to get [Finola] home before this becomes an issue. We can do that right? I don't know, maybe we get that creepy Dutch guy back.
Maddox: You hated the creepy Dutch guy.
Bryan: He was adorable.
Maddox: Have a seat, I need to get you up to speed. Anson Ash, went AWOL 6 years ago. He was a decorated soldier and then became an issue for them.
Bryan: Any more clarity on Influx?
Maddox: Anti-government ideological movement. Organized to dismantle the government's control over the debris. I need you to go and investigate quietly. You want to keep the lights off, at least then I can tell how dark this thing is. I don't want to lose any more lives Bryan, okay?
Bryan: Has Anson Ash revealed what they wanted with George Jones?
Maddox: Not yet, but he will.
Maddox: I don't want you to use Finola on this mission.
Bryan: [mood shifts] I trust her instincts, there's no way she would ever not be one of the first people through the door to retrieve her father.
Maddox: Find a way. This isn't the retrieval for you Bryan. George Jones doesn't come out of this alive.
Bryan: Influx has learned everything they can from George he's not a risk to us now. We can learn things from him.
Maddox: This is what we're doing. I know how hard this is. How hard it is to ask. Shaw knows. He's all you need.
Bryan: there has to be another way.
Maddox: Do you remember that night in Marjah?... You did it without any questions asked... Do you remember that? Keep [Finola] out of the building and you should take some comfort and knowing you can tell her that her dad was killed in crossfire. Trust me.
Bryan: [Trust breaks]
The sum total of their relationship in 10 episodes.
