John T Earnest, born 1999, California inmate BP9253, Federal Register 85152-298, incarceration intake in November 2021 at age 22, sentenced to life
Murder, Attempted Murder, Use of Weapons, Hate Crimes
The man who opened fire on a Poway California synagogue in a deadly antisemitic attack was sentenced in San Diego federal court in December 2021 to life in prison, plus 30 years. The hearing marks the final chapter in the dual prosecution of John T. Earnest and adds to the life term that was handed down to him three months earlier in state court.
Earnest, 22, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to a 113-count federal indictment that charged him with civil rights, hate crimes and weapons charges stemming from the April 27, 2019, attack on the synagogue at Chabad of Poway and arson at the Dar-ul-Arqam mosque in Escondido California about a month earlier.
The shooting killed Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, and wounded the founding Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 8-year-old Noya Dahan and her uncle Almog Peretz, 34.
Earnest was also charged with state charges of murder, attempted murder and hate crimes in San Diego Superior Court. In July 2021 he pleaded guilty to those charges in a deal with prosecutors that allowed him to avoid the death penalty and instead get a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The attacks came during a Passover service at the synagogue. Both state and federal prosecutors said Earnest, then a 19-year-old student studying to be a nurse at Cal State San Marcos who had led an unremarkable suburban life in Ranch Peñasquitos, was driven by fierce hatred of Jewish people.
Shortly before the attack, Earnest had posted an screed online full of racist and antisemitic statements that declared the “European race” must be protected. He praised the March 2019 mass shootings at New Zealand mosques, attacks that left 51 people dead, and referenced the accused gunman in an October 2018 attack at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 people were shot and killed.
In the “open letter” Earnest said he had planned the attack for at least a month, and also admitted he set the fire at the mosque.
In a series of hearings in both state and federal court Earnest has shown little emotion and less regret. At a preliminary hearing in state court in September 2019 he smirked and smiled during testimony about the attack, and at a lunch break in the hearing, he turned toward spectators and made a “hang-loose” gesture with one hand, thumb and little finger extended.
Yet in a sentencing memorandum filed last week, his federal defense lawyers argued Earnest has turned a corner. Lawyers wrote Earnest condemned his actions in a phone call from jail that apparently was recorded.
However those comments came two days after jail officials found a document in Earnest’s jail cell where he again advocated for violence against Jews. Defense lawyers downplayed that by saying it was written long before his apparent condemnation of violence.
The lawyers also wanted Earnest to spend his sentence in a state prison, where he would be closer to his family. They said that would help his rehabilitation. But federal prosecutors instead wanted to have Earnest imprisoned at the super-maximum security federal prison in Florence, Colorado — the same facility where notorious criminals such as Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are housed.
U.S. District Court Judge Anthony Battaglia said he would recommend that Earnest serve the sentence in federal custody, although it will be up to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to accept him. It was not immediately clear if or how state corrections officials would be included in that decision.
The lawyers said that the turnabout in Earnest’s life from a fledgling nurse to armed hatemonger could be attributed to the “rapid online radicalization” that exploited Earnest’s still-developing immature brain.
They wrote that his road to “a good, productive life was unfortunately interrupted by a young, still-growing and immature mind, the mind of a youth who was still trying to identify who he was and left Mr. Earnest to being vulnerable to peer pressure and a fear of exclusion.”
As of September 2023, Earnest was housed under the custody and control of California state authorities at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo, California.

all right, let's do this. favourite menswear at the met gala. do I know who half of these people are? no. and yet, I remain Obsessed.
i will say, it feels like more people actually made an effort with the theme this year, but maybe that's just because it's too easy to slap a flower on something and call it a day, lmao
almost all photos taken from Vogue's wrap-up. and of course, as always, the night was saved by men of colour, thank god
1. Bad Bunny ABSOLUTELY tops my list!!! I love the HAT, I love the bouquet, I love the glasses, I love the corseted waist with the POWERFUL shoulders... the asymmetrical basting stitches and underside of the collar, the inseam ribbons, the backs of the cuff stitches... the CLOVEN SHOES with FUR SPATS?????? at face value it's still just a suit-shaped suit, but actually committing to the corset is based, and it's just such a creative and powerful look, I'm obsessed with it. I don't know if this was the point, but the way it highlights the work and craftsmanship that goes into clothes and fashion, acknowledging the work of the tailor that has its roots in centuries of tradition and innovation, and that little hint of devilry in the power, the shoes, the glasses, the sense of subversion... yes yes yes. also shoutout to him not switching from Spanish in his interview with La La Anthony 🔥
2. Leon Bridges! Love the extra wide shoulders with the little puffs on the sleeves, the spiked lapels extending over the top, the crossover(?) tie, the gloves.. are the shirt cuffs also doing something fun? and the extra-bell bell bottoms, the jewels, the lavender on the lapels, the wisteria on the belt????? and the hair is just perfect. yes, excellent stuff, thank you
3. wearing literally anything that's not a suit puts Gustav Magnar Witzoe near the top of the list, and the more I look at it, the more it grows on me... the glamour, oh my
4. Lil Nas X with designer Raul Lopez!! (extra photo from here, and screenshot from the Vogue livestream) I love the fun shapes, A Million Buttons, the wide legs, the trailing tails, but most especially I love the sculpted waist piece! fun little reveal without the coat on aaa
5. Alton Mason, with the textures, the shoes, the train, and especially that hair/headpiece/veil combo, my GOD
6. last, and kind of least, Wisdom Kaye, because I love the whole vibe, and the colour, and the hat, and the SCORCH MARKS, and the pleated cuffs and lapels... but really, it's nothing particularly special at its heart. great details, great overall effect, but not wildly exciting.
two near misses to top off the list: Barry Keoghan actually broke my heart, coming so close and then chickening out with the Just A Modern Suit, but I love the fabric, the hat, the high collar and cravat, the little ruffled sleeve cuffs... although, the running stitch around the edge of the cravat then left to fray, is... :\
Jon Batiste had a similar problem, where he had that gorgeous eveningwear floral brocade(?) waistcoat, but paired it with a perfectly ordinary, if prettily narrow-shouldered, modern suit
honourable mentions go to:
Lewis Hamilton in this gorgeous ensemble, which doesn't have anything particularly interesting going on, but I happened to catch the explanation, which really engages with history around slavery and gardens, and the first black gardener in Wales, and there's a poem on the inside of the coat by a pioneering black English poet... so. and it is absolutely beautiful. plus the hair? the thorn necklace?? woof.
Kieran Culkin, because it's so FUN!! The colours! The rings! The necklace! The shoes!! and in concert with the yellow dress on Jazz Charton, what a delightful combo
I don't really like Will Welch's suit, but I appreciate the soft slouched shoulders. and in a similar vein, Alex Sharp's suit is fine, but I do like the snatched waist and smashing shoulders, going in the complete opposite direction
and finally, Jeff Goldblum, because it's a basically ordinary suit, but he's really finished it with scarf and gloves and accessories, and god damn does he wear it with such SWAGGER 🔥
bonus round for my favourite womenswear: Natasha Poonawalla in this cool as hell mushroomy dress aaaaa

CLOSED! Preliminary Hot Vintage TV Men List
Alright folks! We have one week left on submissions for the Hot Vintage TV Men's Bracket! As promised here is a list of all the Hot Vintage TV Men who have been submitted and passed our preliminary eligibility checks. There are a handful of guys on this list and one or two not on it that we are currently still debating on so reminder that this list is not final and subject to change.
Currently we have 231 Hot Vintage TV Men!
Also in advance of the competition I'd like to remind anyone submitting propaganda for someone that starred in a show that aired only partially during our timeframe or was under 18 for a part of a shows filming, to please make sure you are only submitting propaganda that is from within our timeframe and when the actor was 18 years or older. This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.

For the book stacks, any of these you like: Books Rachel would Read, Books Rietta would Read, and/or Books Elystan would Read.
Ooh, what a fun idea! I’m pretty sure all my OCs would read all kinds of things that I wouldn’t, but let’s suppose they’ve been let loose in my house to choose twenty books from my shelves. Here’s what they might go for.
Rachel
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
The Marvelous Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum
Ozma of Oz by L. Frank Baum
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Bleak House by Charles Dickens
The Shadow of the Bear by Regina Doman
Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
The Castle Behind Thorns by Merrie Haskell
The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson
The Door in the Hedge by Robin McKinley
The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit
Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
Withering-By-Sea by Judith Rossell
Apple Bough by Noel Streatfeild
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White
Mother Carey’s Chickens by Kate Wiggin Douglas
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Most of Rachel’s selections are classics, with an emphasis on family or friendship stories, which she would relate to. But there’s also a lot of children’s fantasy: Oz (the real-world equivalent of the Yew stories she loves in-universe) and others in a similar vein. Some books were chosen because they’re vaguely reminiscent of her encounters with Rietta: The Enchanted Castle, Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Dragonfly Pool, etc. Jane Eyre and The Shadow of the Bear are present because they have heroines I think she’d appreciate.
Rietta
Knife by R. J. Anderson
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
Entwined by Heather Dixon Wallwork
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Frederica by Georgette Heyer
The Ordinary Princess by M. M. Kaye
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald
Woodwalker by Emily B. Martin
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery
Flambards by K. M. Peyton
Skating Shoes by Noel Streatfeild
The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain
Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster
When Patty Went to College by Jean Webster
For Rietta, I choose books about heroines I think she would appreciate (outgoing and enthusiastic girls/women who boldly take on the world and often escape or defy stifling circumstances), stories with an emphasis on adventure and/or romance (Woodwalker is exactly the sort of fantasy she would like; The Hunger Games would have her on the edge of her seat), travel tales, and family stories that she would devour enviously (her choices of fictional families are a bit more lively/chaotic than Rachel’s selections).
Elystan
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Adolescent by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume I by Arthur Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume II by Arthur Conan Doyle
The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope
Raffles by E. W. Hornung
Archer’s Goon by Diana Wynne Jones
The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones
Eight Days of Luke by Diana Wynne Jones
The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit
The Magic World by E. Nesbit
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy
Tenthragon by Constance Savery
The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict by Trenton Lee Stewart
The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
The Gold Bat and Other Stories by P. G. Wodehouse
Mike and Psmith by P. G. Wodehouse
Assuming I could convince Elystan to restrict himself to just twenty books! He’s got an apparent preference for crime and royal intrigue, both if possible. Lots of trickster characters. I think he’d very much appreciate Diana Wynne Jones. He’s a big Sherlock Holmes fan (or rather, his world’s version of the character) but also reads Raffles with the same excitement, seeing no moral inconsistency. Six of Crows is not age-appropriate for him, but why would that stop him he’d be all over that plot. Wodehouse’s school stories would amuse him, and I think he’d appreciate the young Nicholas Benedict. And Oswald Bastable’s narration style. The Adolescent is there because copies of Flight of Fantasy (the book he reads in “A Visit from the Murderess”) are impossible to come by, and Tenthragon is something he really ought to read, particularly later in his timeline.

1500 Followers! Vintage Phantom Audio Gift
As a huge thank you for 1500 followers, I bring you 10 vintage Phantom audios!
These are 10 of my favorite audios from 2000 or before. I feel like a lot of the vintage recordings are so lovely, but often overlooked for the newer audios. Which is understandable, as many of the casts from 1990-2000 are relatively unknown. So let’s show them a little love!
The link to all of the audios is here: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/edh34vyegj0jd/Gifts(2)
The cast, dates, and my little thoughts on why they’re great are below!
Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Steve Barton, Nicholas Wyman, Cris Groenendaal, Judy Kaye, Leila Martin, David Romano, Elisa Heinsohn
February 28, 1988; Broadway
I think we can all figure out why this one is here. Anything of the original cast is a treasure to me. Besides that though, I think Sarah sounds really nice here and gives a bit more emotion than you get on the cast recording. Most of the time people who don't care for Sarah judge her more on the OLCR and some YouTube clips. I think she sounded even better as time went on. And of course the rest of the cast is wonderful. I think a must-listen!
Dave Willetts, Jan Hartley-Morris, Michael Ball, Maria Moll, Michael N Harbour, David Firth, Mary Millar, John Aron
July 15, 1988; London
I have been told this is a soundboard, which sounds very possible. But due to age and probably wear and tear/downloads it isn't the best quality. Still, has a wonderful cast. Jan is the standout for me and yet she is definitely the least known out of the trio. Her voice is absolutely divine. Dave was wonderful in reminding you of Michael but also making his Phantom unique. And Michael seems like he was a wonderful Raoul.
Colm Wilkinson, Susan Cuthbert, Byron Nease, Paul Massel, Gregory Cross, Lyse Guerin, Kristine Marie Guiguet, Peter Cormican, Donna Rubin
March 17, 1991; Toronto, Canada
Never been a huge fan of Colm, but especially now since Rebecca Caine's story. However, this is the only audio of Susan Cuthbert, who I think sounds lovely and is so overlooked. Rest of the company is great as well.
Mark Jacoby, Karen Culliver, Hugh Panaro, Paul Laureano, Jeff Keller, Patrice Pickering, Marilyn Caskey, Gary Rideout, Catherine Ulyssies
August 1992; Broadway
Act 1 is a soundboard, Act 2 is a very good audience recording. I think the entire trio is absolutely lovely. Also, baby Hugh!
Thomas James O'Leary, Sandra Joseph, Gary Mauer, Teressa Eldh, Frederick Herenges, George Lee Andrews, Patrice Pickering, Jeff Keller, Gerdalyn Del Carso
February 3, 1998; Broadway
Posting especially for Thomas. Pretty unknown Phantom nowadays, but I have always liked him. Sandra vocally is a bit of a hit or miss sometimes for me, but I tend to like her more in her early days. And Gary as Raoul! Such a lovely voice.
Glyn Kerslake, Jill Washington, Chris Harley, Anthony Raffell, Leo Andrews, Jasna Ivir, Heather Jackson, David Hillman, Amanda Light
March 6, 1999; London
I loved Glyn's voice the first time I heard it. Another relatively unknown Phantom. Jill has a wonderful and lush voice.
Ted Keegan, Rebecca Pitcher, Richard Todd Adams
April 17, 1999; Norfolk
Great clear sounding audio. Ted Keegan is one of my favorite Phantom's and he is still understudying the role on Broadway today! I saw him in 2019 and he very much gives me Hugh Panaro vibes vocally and is a great mix of old school Phantom in the modern day. Vocally, Rebecca doesn't always impress me but her earlier years I like much more. So she sounds pretty good here.
Hugh Panaro, Adrienne McEwan, Gary Mauer
June 11, 1999; Broadway
Adrienne is honestly one of my favorites because she has a very unique voice. Having been in the show for so long and part of 2 anniversaries, I am always surprised she isn't better known. Also, Hugh in his first Phantom run! And another Gary as Raoul audio.
Mike Sterling, Charlotte Page, Gartor Thor Cortez
July 31, 1999; London
If I could time travel, this would be one of the casts I would see. Mike vocally seems like he was ahead of his time in a sense. He reminds me a bit of Tim Howar. Charlotte has a stunning operatic voice. Also features Gardar Thor Cortes as Raoul! Not sure why, but he spelled his name different back then. Love his voice as well.
Ian Jon Bourg, Colby Thomas, Christopher Morandi (u/s), Vera Borisova, David Hunerjaeger, Linda Bruske, Marcello Ronchietto
July 5, 2000; Hamburg, Germany
Super clear audio of the original German production featuring 2 long running Phantom cast members? Yes please.
