Dear Gus & Magnus,
We had our first Comm Team Christmas party this year at Lost Forty Brewing. Laura talked about each employee and how they've contributed to the mission this year. And we recently asked for peer-nominations for the best team player of the year. We didn't anticipate one of the team leaders to get so many nominations, so Laura recognized Amber (team leader) as well as Kate -- both of them are worthy of the recognition. And then Derek and Sasha spoke about Laura and noted that she recently became Garver's first female executive when she was quietly promoted to Chief Communications Officer. To recognize that, we gifted her a large photo of the team on stage at Summit.
Dad.
Little Rock, Arkansas. 12.8.2023 - 8.41pm.
SIDENOTE: G&T kept you while Mom and I went to the party. It was the first time they'd kept you both. They were all in bed by the time we got home before 10pm. I'm stoked about having an extra two sets of hands to babysit nearby.

Some Basketball Videography And A Conversation We Need To Have About Content And It's Purpose
A brief documentation and dissection of some of the basketball videos I've shot
I think it's important to establish that when you shoot/film/produce or create a video, you have to understand that different types of content exists for different purposes.
This is a matter of understanding, applied/functional art vs actual art, and understanding the difference between filmaking, videography ad content creation.
For instance, I can shoot footage for a professional sports team and because the footage will be used for strategic/game preparation purposes, the aesthetics, like the lighting, the angle, motion and camera movement will be far less important, and it's more important that you can see the whole field and can capture the action with no breaks, pauses or cuts.
This type of videography is something you will only ever be able to present to people in the sports field.
Once you start talking about content for the sake of the actual aesthetics or even storytelling, all the above stated artistics inputs, becomes priority, and this changes even more if you're shooting the content for the purpose of marketing or sales.
Just a thing that I thinks needs spoken about more, and even if you don't specialize, at the very least, one should always know why they are shooting something.
instagram
The first basketball videos I shot, were not organized competition, and was more informal in setting, but it was cool because I got to move around all over, pick my angles and lenses, and then put it in to post production with filters and music I like.
Nowadays, I may try to use less music because I don't think Instagram's algorithm likes it when you use other artist's work. Later I would make these reels but for other sports like the one you see below.
instagram
While I have mainly shot photographs both for the above shown Tennis tournament, as well as the Tshwane Baksetball Association, I always managed to get a healthy amount of video footage from each day''s shoot, and once I started editing these for the sake of putting them on social media, that is when they became content, and not visual art, and let me explain.
Yes, I have a healthy amount of creative input and I get to choose a lot of what is captured on screen as far as angles and camera positioning and even the subject, but the purpose of this content is to engage with the people I'm capturing on social media.
instagram
Now obeserve the difference when I post something like this......
instagram
Understand, that from a purely sports broadcasting and even videography perspective, everything I did in the last above video was wrong. Most importantly because I did not track the ball.
However, from a branding/"look at me"/aesthetic point of view, the view does a better job, and note that when I lost track of the ball, I tried to avoid jerking to find it, instead letting the subject/players roll back in to the screen and staying in as tight a zoom as my 70-200mm lense will allow.
I shot that video for it's aesthetic appeal.
Please note that while I can make the choice to shoot something functionally (for the sake of capturing the action) or aesthetically (for the artistic benefits), there are times when the two can have a happy medium as well.
Sometimes content can be visually pleasing, while still creating awareness of the brand, expounding on a brand's core values, and still leaving room for people to engage and enjoy the content, and I think my final video does that.
instagram
Let me know what you think.
Where have you battled with the question of functional art or aesthetic art in you own creative travels, and we can trade old stories about the most rewarding creative and professional situations you've been blessed enough to be in.

Entrepreneurs and growing businesses often find themselves at a crossroads when it comes to the need for specialized skills and expertise, grappling with decisions that could shape the future of their companies. Not to talk about the watcher thing again as I’ve already kind of said my piece, but one of the most batshit insane parts of this whole unbelievable situation is that for some reason they decided that for some fucking reason the BEST time to announce this highly controversial decision was literally DAYS before they would be going on an international tour and having to face irate fans IN PERSON. Guys. What the hell. At least have the sensibility to announce a move that you HAD to have known would make people upset AFTER one of the few times you actually interact in person with your fanbase.
I hope you’re ready to investigate the Tower of London for ghosts, because I have a feeling the Londoners will be more than happy to acquaint you with the building later this week.
Insane move after insane move. Truly.

Something I miss from earlier eras of the creative side of the internet was things just being unabashedly low-budget. Just all unashamedly amateur, unprofessional, ‘I don’t own a good camera but I have a story to tell you’, ‘I can’t afford a good mic but I have a song to sing for you,’ ‘I don’t have any kind of background in editing or lighting and I only just picked up this guitar last Tuesday but here’s an entire musical me and my friends wrote about our favourite book, we filmed it on a potato and put it up on YouTube in ten minute segments because we thought it was pretty funny.’

We didn’t get a S4 announcement, but you know what the absolute best thing about today’s C2E2 Hannibal panel truly was?
For almost the first time since the show ended, Fannibals showed how profitable Hannibal can still be.
C2E2 sold out of their remaining VIP ticket packages with guaranteed panel seating within 48 hours of the reunion announcement. Paid PopVerse subscriptions to stream the panel spiked with previously untapped demos (if socials are anything to go by). The largest event hall at C2E2 was overcapacity 45 minutes before the panel; while that’s normal for cons like SDCC and NYCC, in my experience that’s less common at C2E2.
Not to mention Mads and Hugh making bank with autograph and photo-op sales; a huge component of drawing in good talent to table at cons as well, making sure they make enough over the weekend to justify their presence beyond panel appearances. From a talent booking/event management perspective, this is the absolute dream scenario.
So, here’s the super fun part: ReedPop, the company that owns C2E2, also owns/operates New York Comic Con (NYCC), one of the highest-profile US entertainment conventions after San Diego Comic-Con. Now that ReedPop is aware of the viability of Hannibal programming, it would be extremely surprising if RP didn’t attempt a run at a larger, proper reunion panel at NYCC.
Honestly, great job, team. 2024 could very well be the year we get real buzz going again!

Dear Gus & Magnus,
We shot a promotional Summit video today with the rest of the Comm Team. Usually when I write scripts, most of the characters are interchangeable because I don't know who will actually say the lines, but I like writing for our team because I know who they are and what they would say in certain situations. It's fun to watch my ideas play out.
Dad.

Some Basketball Photos
Tumblr media
These are some photographs I've shot for a new basketball league.
I may watch NBA basketball but I participate in real-life, local basketball as a photographer/content creator, and these are some of the pictures I've contributed to the league's marketing team.
Tumblr media
Now the recommended setting for sports photography are 1/1000 shutter speed, and aperture of f5.0 and your ISO opened up to about 400.
Now here's the trick, with this and wiith every other form of photography, the settings are really just a general framework and a starting point/default for adjustments that you will then have to make based on available light.
So you may start at 1/1000 shutter speed but find 1/800 gives you better results, so you stay in 1/800.
Also, your position in relation to the light will often influence your choices, so you need to be able to add and take away light, and thats why your settings are important to remember.
Tumblr media
This guy is a standout star in our local basketball scene, and he also happens to be on the marketing team for the league as well.
His Instagram has a bunch of clips of him, he's also played in the Basketball National League.
Tumblr media
Some how Sunnyside Basketball team managed to get a UNICEF sponsorship, a very rare feat considering the last pro teams I remember having those were probably FC Barcelona.
