Takin’ a swing at @markthrash​‘s #kaijuly2017 challenge!  It’s already July 3, so here’s a roundup of 1-3!

1. Favorite Pacific Rim kaiju

Otachi

What a babe!  She’s rad as hell just in general, but what makes her one of my all-time faves is that she’s an evolving monster.  Just when our heroes (and the audience) think they have her figured out, she lays out some new shit... even in death!

Runner-up: Knifehead! Like I could possibly resist a classically-styled monster that (seemingly) is inspired by Guiron?

2. Favorite Kaiju Roar

Godzilla (1954)

Kind of a boring, obvious answer, but listen to that shit man! That BASS! That howl! That scream!  It’s like the death metal version of whale songs, and that is un-toppable in my book.

Runner-up: Rodan It’s really hard to pick only one runner-up.  Most of the best monsters make wonderful, iconic sounds.  This spot almost went to Mothra, Gamera, King Ghidorah, and Jurassic Park’s T-Rex (not a kaiju, I know!), but Rodan’s yowling isn’t just famous, it gets re-used for OTHER Toho monsters on the reg! He’s a kaiju dubber!

3. Least Favorite Godzilla film

Godzilla (1998)

What’s left to be said about this one? The haters have hated on it, the defenders have stood up for it, and I think just about everybody agrees it’s way past time to Let It Go©. That said, if you ask which one I like the least, I’ll still tell ya! It’s a movie that desperately wishes it wasn’t a Godzilla movie, and that’s a drag to watch. It’s pretty fun as a 90s time capsule though!  You can read my full thoughts here.

Runner-up: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus It’s just a lifeless, joyless flick.  The lack of energy leeches the momentum out of the fun ideas they have, and Megaguirus herself feels like a less-interesting version of villains we’ve seen before.  Almost gave this to Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) for similar reasons.  That’s my bottom three, FYI!
