A Day for Romance

The next day was Love Day and I sent all the girls out in search of romance.

Marlene of course met up with her fiance, Van. They met at the park for a nice little picnic. and I sent Simone to the diner with her boyfriend, Duane.

But of course the second she got there I got this notification...Something tells me this relationship isn't going to last.

Venus, who is single, had a blast collecting eggs at the festival. Proving that you don't have to have a significant other to have fun on Love Day :)

By evening, both Marlene and Simone were home. I'm not surprised Duane didn't come home with Simone...wah wah wah.

Venus spent the entire day at the festival! Trying her luck at horseshoes and getting her face painted.

The US is experiencing its largest summer Covid wave in at least two years - Published Aug 16, 2024

It may be time to dust off the face masks and air purifiers.

The US is in the midst of a significant Covid-19 wave, with viral activity levels in wastewater the highest they’ve been for a summer surge since July 2022, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s wastewater dashboard.

The CDC’s measure of national Covid viral activity in wastewater rose to 8.82 on August 10 – falling shy of a peak of 9.56 in July 2022. The CDC says the most recent data is incomplete and may change. Before it started rising again in May, it was at 1.36.

“Currently, the COVID-19 wastewater viral activity level is very high nationally, with the highest levels in the Western US region,” Dr. Jonathan Yoder, deputy director of the CDC’s Wastewater Surveillance Program, said in an email. “This year’s COVID-19 wave is coming earlier than last year, which occurred in late August/early September.”

Emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths are also ticking up, although not to the same extent as infections, according to the CDC’s Covid dashboard. As of the end of July, the CDC’s dashboard shows about 4 are being hospitalized for Covid for every 100,000 people in a given area, up from a low in May of about one Covid hospitalization for every 100,000 people – the lowest level since the pandemic began.

The CDC’s wastewater data closely aligns with what they’re seeing at the nationwide WastewaterSCAN network, too.

“This is a very significant surge. The levels are very high. They’re the highest we’ve ever seen during a summer wave,” said Dr. Marlene Wolfe, an assistant professor of environmental health and public health at Emory University and a program director for WastewaterSCAN. “We’re detecting SARS-CoV-2 in 100 percent of our samples across the country right now.”

WastewaterSCAN also began monitoring in early 2022 and the number of sites that it monitors has changed over time.

“Despite these changes, it’s notable that levels right now for WastewaterSCAN are much higher than previous summer peaks and yet still below the average concentrations at the height of the winter peaks in 2023, 2022, and 2021,” said Dr. Alexandria Boehm, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University and program director for WastewaterSCAN.

Health officials no longer track the coronavirus as closely as they did during the public health emergency, and there are no longer reliable estimates of daily or weekly new infections in the US. Instead, the nation is largely relying on wastewater levels to follow numbers of new cases.

Wolfe says the amount of virus in wastewater doesn’t precisely correlate to numbers of infections. That’s because there are a host of things that can influence how much virus is in wastewater – including how much water is flowing through the sewage system when sampling takes place, as well as how much virus people may be shedding with a given variant. Despite these variables, she says sampling over time has shown there is a strong relationship between the number of people infected in a given area and the amount of virus in local wastewater.

“We can’t say exactly how many more cases that may be compared to previous years, because some of those changes might have happened in the virus in the areas that we’re measuring,” she said.

The rise in cases is being driven by waning immunity in the population and a trio of new variants that have drifted enough from their parent virus, JN.1, to escape the ability of our antibodies to quickly neutralize them.

Cases are also climbing just as children head back to classrooms in many parts of the US, giving the infection plenty of opportunity to spread.

It’s not clear when this surge will peak and start to taper off.

“Here in Houston, Texas, wastewater numbers are still high and not declining. They have reached a plateau at a high level for several weeks,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease expert who is director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital.

The surge of cases has also come ahead of the availability of an updated Covid-19 vaccine designed to better protect against the new variants, which could help slow the spread of the virus.

“It’s a bit disappointing that these are not available now, as Covid is surging,” Hotez said.

The US Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved the latest tweaks to the Covid-19 vaccines, but experts say they’ve heard that updated shots from Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax should be ready in the coming weeks.

In June, the FDA, following its normal process of reevaluating the need for changes to the Covid vaccines, directed manufacturers to update their shots for the fall to better match the variants that were making people sick.

“We keep hearing rumors that it will be here by the end of September, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University.

The best thing people can do as far as their own personal risk is to get that vaccine when it does become available, Hotez said.

“Next, of course, is a good N95 or KN95 mask when you are in crowded indoor areas,” Hotez said, and seek out the antiviral medication Paxlovid if you test positive. For that reason, it’s also a good idea to stock up on Covid-19 tests to identify whether any coughs or runny noses are being caused by the coronavirus.

Lovina Schrock, 91

Mrs. Lovina Hostetler Schrock, 91, of Moravian Falls, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at her residence.

Lovina was born on June 11, 1928 in Stark County Ohio to Henry Hostetler and Ella Miller Hostetler.

Lovina is preceded in death by parents; husband, Mervin L. Schrock; brother, Ervin Hostetler; sister, Beulah Hochstedler and great grand daughter, Danielle Schrock.

Lovina is survived by her 5 daughters, Susan Faye Hochstetler of Canada, Joy Roselle Hileman of Ohio, Debra Kaye Yoder of Moravian Falls, Juanita Lynne Herber of Pennsylvania, Charlotte Marlene Schrock of Virginia; 5 sons, John Mark Schrock, Larry Dean Schrock, Timothy Jay Schrock, Franklin Scott Schrock all of Virginia, Frederick Allen Schrock of Moravian Falls; sisters, Mary Wittmer of Pennsylvania, Viola Mullet of Ohio; brothers, Melvin Hostetler of Ohio, Henry Hostetler of Canada; 21 grandchildren and many great grand children.

The funeral service will be held in Ohio at a later date.

 Nancy Winters, 5

Nancy Lee Winters, age 55, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab Center. Nancy was born July 11, 1963 in Wilkes County to Cecil and Mandy Stanley Trivette. She loved to fish; do crafts and quilting. Ms. Winters was preceded in death by her parents; and several siblings.

Surviving are her son, Steven Winters and spouse Jessica of North Wilkesboro; daughter, Amanda Winters and spouse Zachary White of Huntington, West Virginia; a number of siblings; grandchildren, M.J. Winters and Josh Walker.

The family has requested no flowers.

 Hazel Prevette, 96

Hazel Maie Johnson Prevette, 96, of North Wilkesboro, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village.

She was born May 23, 1923 in Wilkes County, to the late William Edward Johnson and Julie Maie Combs Johnson.

     Hazel was a member of Lewis Baptist Church.  She loved singing and praising the Lord with her church family in the choir.  She was a passionate vegetable and flower gardener.

     Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Dewey Gaither Prevette Sr.; grandchildren, Craig Williams and Pamela Taylor.

     Those left to cherish and honor her memory include: daughters, Peggy Taylor (Wallace) of McGrady, Kathy Williams (Dean) of Wilkesboro; sons, D. G.  Fern Anderson, 87

Fern Anderson, 87 Mrs. Fern Pauline Call Anderson, age 87, widow of Hobert Anderson, died on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Villages of Wilkes.

     Funeral services were June 19,  at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Alan Bouchelle officiating.  Burial was in Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson was born June 19, 1931 in Wilkes County to Benjamin Winfred and Carrie Elizabeth Benge Call. She was a member of Penelope Baptist Church in Hickory. Before her retirement while residing in Hickory, NC, she worked for Cline Insurance Company as a private secretary and was self-employed as a skin care specialist thru Ann Mari.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Anderson; four sisters, Sylvia Call Soots, Tessie Call Foster, Florence Call Hayes Bouchelle, and Doris Call Waddell Spears; and four brothers, Julius H. Call, James P. Call, Roy "Ray" Call, and Coy "Clay" Call.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Anderson Plemmons of North Wilkesboro; twin sons, Tracy Anderson and wife, Sandy, of Millers Creek, and Travis Van Anderson of Hickory; four grandchildren, Dana K.Anderson, Dylan L. Anderson, Doug Plemmons, and Floyd Plemmons; four great-grandchildren, Rachel C. Plemmons, Kyle P. Plemmons, Jason Sprinkle, and Elijah Foster; one great-great-grandchild, Chaselyn Kate Plemmons; one sister, Lois Call Foster of Traphill; and one brother, Thomas Jerry Call of Wilkesboro.

The latter part of her life, Mrs. Anderson spent ten years at Catawba Valley Assisted Living and three years at Wilkes Senior Villages.  The family sincerely thanks the staff of both facilities for their wonderful care of their loved one.

A special thank you from the family to Shirley Bowlin for her exceptional care of our Mother.

  Kenith Jones, Sr., 83

 Mr. Kenith Smythe Jones, Sr., 83, of Taylorsville, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Valley Nursing Center.

Kenith was born December 18, 1935 in Fayette  County, WV, the son of the late George Thomas Jones, Sr. and Inez Blanch Duncan Jones.

He was a US Army veteran, who served in Germany as a combat engineer. He had worked as a supervisor for Southern Devices before retiring and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading Westerns, was a avid Redskin fan, and enjoyed playing golf when he was able and also enjoyed watching NASCAR.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Peggy Joyce Payne Jones; four sisters, Beulah Pemberton, Doris Criss, Natella Blackwell and infant sister, Carolyn Jones; a brother, George Jones.

Those left to cherish and honor his memory include: a daughter, Patricia Jones Carter and husband, Larry, of Statesville; four sons, Kenny Jones and wife, Joan, of Taylorsville, Barry Jones and wife, Janna, of Newton, Timothy Jones and wife, Lisa, of Taylorsville, Ricky Jones of Asheville; five grandchildren, Joshua Moore, Caitlin Jones Parkhurst and husband, Matt, Ashley Jones, Tyler Jones and wife, Tiffany, Andrew Jones and fiance, Lacey Bruno; four great-grandchildren, RJ, Gracelynn, Jacob and Ezra; two sisters, Janet Payne and husband, Charles, of WV, Drema Gail Gales of VA; a brother, William Jones and wife, Carol, of WV; a sister-in-law, Christine Jones of WV; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service was held  June 17,  at Bethel Baptist Church with Revs. Bill Smith and Ervel Jones officiating. Burial   followed in the church cemetery with flag folding ceremony.

Pallbearers were Ken's sons and grandsons.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you for every act of kindness or visit to our loved one and also to the staff, nurses and caregivers at Valley Nursing Center.

 Terri Sigmon, 64

Terri Lynn Sigmon, age 64, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2019 at Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation in Taylorville and is now resting in the care of our Lord.  

She was born in Hickory, NC on February 28, 1955.  Prior to moving there she lived at Parklane Group home in Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Jane Sigmon of Hickory.  

She is survived by her sister, Sandie Cline (Jimmie) of Wilkesboro, and her brothers, Robert Sigmon (Virginia) of Statesville, and Bruce Sigmon of Hickory.

Terri was a long- time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hickory where she is best remembered for her deep faith and leading the congregation in happy birthday songs.  She especially loved family gatherings during the holidays. She had a special relationship with her nephews Christopher (Tanya) of Wilkesboro, Jonathan (Ellen) and Matthew (Jessica) of Mooresville and great nephews and nieces, Ayden, Charlie, Cameron, Macie, Oren, Eli, Finley and Luke. They will cherish the memories of her.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 20,   at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hickory.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2: 00 until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Richard Schwandt will be officiating the service. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the memorial fund at Christ Lutheran Church, 324 2nd Ave. SE, Hickory, NC 28602.

Vickie Cothren, 52 Miss Vickie Lee Cothren, age 52 of Roaring River, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

     Funeral services were June 15,   at White Plains Baptist Church with Pastor William Souther and Bishop Peggy Horton officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.                Vickie was born October 24, 1966 in Wilkes County to James "Jim" Ervin Cothren and Georgie Lee Swaim Cothren. She was employed for 30 years with Wilkes Community College as a Library Assistant. Vickie enjoyed spending time with her great nieces and nephews who called her "Bibby" and liked sports from WFU, Chicago Bulls and Carolina Panthers. She also enjoyed cooking and most enjoyed sharing her testimony with her relationship with God.

She was preceded in death by her mother; Georgie Lee Cothren.

 James Ashley, Jr. 77

Mr. James Martin Ashley, Jr. age 77 of Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were June 18,   at Cub Creek Baptist Church with Pastor John Lewis and Mr. Frank Denny officiating. Burial was in Cub Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  

Mr. Ashley was born November 27, 1941 in Wilkes County to James Martin Ashley, Sr. and Geneva Sink Ashley.  He was retired after 35 dedicated years at Lowe's Companies. During his employment he worked as a Store Manager and a Regional Manager. James was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a member of Cub Creek Baptist Church where he was a Faithful Deacon, Loved and Respected Sunday School Teacher, member of the Adult Choir and Hand Bell Choirs, Good News Club Teacher, served on the Building Committee, Maintenance Committee and the Expansion Committee. James was an avid Golfer. After retirement, he enjoyed spending his time working on his cattle farm and enjoying the beautiful mountain views. He was always helping or attending the many activities with his grandchildren. James was well known for his love of his family, his church and his tremendous work ethic. His best Friend, Bear, Black-Lab mix was always at his side, waiting for the last bite of anything that James ate.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Bill Ashley.

James is survived by his wife; Judy Ann Wayne Ashley of the home, two daughters; Jamie Ashley Beamon and Lorie Ashley Kerhoulas both of Wilkesboro, a son; James Martin Ashley, III "Jimmy" of Wilkesboro, five grandchildren; Anna Kerhoulas LaFave and husband Ethan, Stephen Kerhoulas and fiancé Clair Colburn, Martin Beamon, Jacob Beamon and Nicholas Ashley, a great grandchild; Addy Billings and two sisters; Ann Ashley and Jane Ashley both of Wilkesboro.

 Ann Whitworth, 83

Ann Hill Whitworth, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at her home in Purlear, NC. She was born in Erwin, NC on November 12, 1935 to Frank Weaver, Sr. and Elsie Horrell Weaver.

Mrs. Whitworth was formerly employed at Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company and was retired from Duke Medical Center. She was a member of Greystone Baptist Church until her move to Purlear, NC in 2007. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Purlear, NC until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Roy Hill and her husband, Donald Whitworth.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Hill Yates of Purlear, NC; her son, Frederick A. Hill of Durham, NC; three grandsons, Ross B. Yates, and wife, Andrea of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Brett J. Yates of Millers Creek, NC, and Mark C. Yates of Purlear, NC and three great grandchildren, Finley Madison Yates, Bennett Reid Yates, and Cooper Hill Yates.

A memorial service will be held on June 29, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Greystone Baptist Church, Hillsborough Road, Durham, NC. A private burial at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Wake Forest Care at Home Hospice, 126  Executive Drive, Suite 110, Wilkesboro, NC 28697.

I Can't Have a Wedding so I Might as Well Throw a Bachelorette Party!

I couldn't wait for the girls to get home from work the next evening because I had special plans! As per my SP settings Marlene and Van can't get married until at least fall (still not sure what happened with Simili and Gerald in St. Bernie, but oh well). But that doesn't mean we can't throw a little bachelorette party!

The only problem is that unlike Redwood Harbor, these sims aren't all super close, or even close enough to show up to most parties, so the only guest to show was Irma...Anyway, I guess it's good to know who your true friends are, and hey it's still better than poor Cheri's party!

Good to see the precedent of breaking plumbing still applies despite only one guest being at the party.

OMG! Are those chocolate gnomes Irma brought to the party?! How cute!!

Seriously??!! None of these girls are even in the Ghost Hunting career! Bahahaha! Guess it's a good thing it's across the street instead of our house at least!

What on Earth...or in Space?

I know I say it all the time, but this game is so beautiful!

The girls ate breakfast WITHOUT setting the kitchen on fire this morning! Someone is going to have to clean out that fridge after work though!

What??? I could have sworn I deleted that moodlet! OMG! This is not good and NOT fair! Donnell was abducted by aliens!

Ugh...this will not do! I'll just jump into the Pierre household and call social services to place the alien up for adoption.

My mistake...that's a Sims 2 thing...okay, plan B... place the kiddo somewhere inaccessible and wait for social services to take it away. I'm so sorry guys, I hate to do this, but the only playthrough I wanted to allow alien hybrids in was St. Bernie...

So, I spent a good portion of the rest of this playthrough trying to get that to happen because the baby kept getting reset...What eventually worked was placing the poor thing in the crawl space. Of course, now Donnell, Van and Lewis all have the memory of being negligent...not ideal...

Back with my active household while I worked on the other situation...Marlene headed to the library after work, but the rest of the evening was uneventful.

A Well Done Start

I can't believe we're already at the end of my Constant Springs playthrough! Also, this post was queued up to post this morning at my normal time, but it appears that the mess with my account caused it to get eaten by the internet never to be seen again...so here goes take two!

We're on our last household, Marlene's!

And as you can see, there are more gnome graves!

Just some town news to start the morning, and yay! Our first baby is on the way!

MARLENE!!! And Why is Marisella here?! She literally ran across the street to jump into the flames and block the fire fighter!! Argh...Reset Sim...This is clearly my game trying to purge my population again...facepalm...

Thankfully, the rest of the day was relatively quiet...just some reading for Venus after work and chores for Marlene. Fixing that sink left her absolutely exhausted so I don't blame her for leaving those puddles and just going to bed.

Snowflake Day Problems

Van and Lewis headed off to the festival first thing in the morning, leaving poor Donnell to fix the bathtub on his own. Also, I am sooo sorry I am so bad with pet names I literally played this not long before the holidays in real life and I still can't remember their little dog's name!

After fixing that tub and finally getting in his chance to bathe, Donnell met up with his girlfriend, Joey down at the java hut.

Aww...is there more romance in the air?

Oooh...maybe!

Meanwhile, back at the java hut, Donnell was ignoring his date until she took matters into her own hands.

Much better! At least now he's providing some ambience, LOL!

Van went over to Marlene's house after spending the day at the festival. Better head home soon fellas...there's a full moon a rising!

Off to Work

Bright and early the next morning van was off to work.

Lewis tried to sneak in a breakfast burrito before heading off himself.

He tried to pay bills, but in sim tradition, they are pretty much destitute so it looks like I'm going to be busy trying to get their finances in order!

Hey! Donnell got a raise while at work! That will help for sure!

Oh no! I discovered the lot was absolutely littered with gnome memorials! Poor gnomes! On the other hand, extra cash?? I mean we didn't know these gnomes...I know I should feel bad about it, but I don't. Also, this world was created with a gnome scavenger hunt so I wonder if all these gnomes were actually placed here by the creator?

Oh wow! Van got a raise too! Between increased income and random gnome memorials we'll get those bills paid off in no time!

The sims in this playthrough have been slow to progress in their personal lives so I jumped at the chance to invite Van's girlfriend over when he rolled the want to get engaged. Oh yeah...He's dating Marlene Yoder...you know, the same sim who got into a brawl with roommate Lewis Casper while I was constructing the working restaurant...LOL!

After a quiet dinner and a little romance, Van built up his confidence and...

Oh yay! She said yes!! Guess she and Lewis are just going to have to put their differences aside! A raise and a yes to his proposal, this has been an amazing day for Van!

It was off to bed for Van and Pierre, but where is Lewis??

Down at the old mine of course playing tag in the snow with Tami Carey! Why am I not surprised, LOL!

Some Party!

The next day I set to work adding a functional restaraunt to the ferry terminal, with the help of the kitty!

Then I heard some commotion...

Oh bahahahaha!! Is THAT what you have to do to get a good party rating around this town!?!

I got to work finishing my redecoration and sent Moses over to test it...after he put on clothes that is!

Yep! Everything seems to be in working order!

Oh dear! Now it's Brian who's sleeping on the public benches! Wake up and go home!

Goodbye Little Town

The sims in this world are finally beginning to come into their own!

Venus finished work for the week and went home to play video games.

Marlene ran down to the grocery store in time to see poor pregnant Christina Mott suffering from first trimester woes.

And we leave the girls. All in bed and ready for the next round and their makeovers. Of course, it's going to be a while before I hop back in to play them!

Jerry Alexander, 73

Brother Jerry Ander Alexander, age 73 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Seth Whitley, Brother Jason Lee Whitley and Mr. Jason Richardson officiating.  The body will be placed in the church at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Middle Cross Baptist Church Cemetery. .

Jerry was born October 19, 1945 in Wilkes County to Roy Clinton and Lura Mae Stone Alexander.  He was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a pastor for 16 years.  

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Judy Brown Alexander and one brother; Earl Alexander.

He is survived by three daughters; Sandy Richardson and husband Wayne of Hays, Dawn Alexander and Pam Alexander both of North Wilkesboro, one   grandson; Jason Richardson and fiance' Chelsey Berry, and one great grandchild; Carly Richardson, sister; Mary Nell Williams of North Wilkesboro, brother; Mayford Alexander and wife; Thelma of Roaring River and sister-in-law; Jane Alexander of Rock Creek.

  Fellman Cheek, 84

Preacher Fellman Cheek, age 84 of Roaring River, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at his home.  

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Hall, Pastor Brian Cardwell and Pastor Larry Stone officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  

Preacher Cheek was born January 29, 1935 in Wilkes County to Ell and Mary Elizabeth Gentry Cheek.  He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church. Preacher Cheek dedicated over 50 years of his life to preaching the Gospel.  He was Pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro for 4 years, Calvary Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro for 40 plus years where he was Pastor Emeritus, Grassy Knob Baptist Church in Union Grove for 3 years and Maple Springs Baptist Church in Ronda.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Betty Jane Billings Cheek, four sisters; Geneva Hudler, Ozena Myers, Mary Hemric and Rosie Hanes and three brothers; Willard Cheek, Clemmon Cheek and Marvin Cheek.

Mr. Jordan Ryan Adams, age 33 of North Wilkesboro passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Adams was born August 4, 1986 in Wilkes County to Gary Walter and Kim Holbrook Adams.  He was a 2005 graduate of North Wilkes High  School and worked for Hobes Ham.

 Bobby Yoder, 59

Bobby Jean Yoder, age 59, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Bobby was born February 4, 1960 in Tazwell  County, Virginia. Bobby was one of the most amazing, hardworking mothers. She never met a stranger and was the grandmother of the century. She was loved by everyone who got to know her. Ms. Yoder was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Eugene and Idna Gladys Yates; brother, Timmy Yoder; and first husband, Joseph Haney.

Surviving are her sons, Joey Haney and spouse Courtney of North Wilkesboro, Randy Dowell and spouse Chelsea of North Wilkesboro, Joshua Dowell and spouse Nicole of Ronda; Gary Conley of Hays (nephew); grandchildren, Preston Dowell, Dominic Haney, Kaitlyn Haney, Kierstin Dowell, Haylie Dowell, Zach Dowell, Emma Hartley, Journey Haney, Jedidiah Haney, Caston Dowell; siblings, Connie Jo Dodson of Winston Salem, Gerrie Hildebrand of Clemmons, Bessie Diane Hall of Wilkesboro, Robbie Yoder of Florida, Teressa Grey and Arlene Morgan both of Tennessee; nieces, Shannon Campbell and Crystal Conley, among other nieces and nephews.

 Sue Summers, 81

Mrs. Sue Mathis Summers, age 81 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist- Wilkes Medical Center.

Graveside services were September 3, at Mountlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Chris Lakey officiating.  

Mrs. Summers was born January 21, 1938 in Wilkes County to Coy and Thelma Jarvis Mathis. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sports, gardening, cooking and her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Charles E. Summers, Sr., three sisters; Mary Sale, Lucille Johnson and Jean Anderson and one brother; Buddy Mathis.

She is survived by three sons; Charles Summers Jr. and wife Debbie, John Summers and wife Rosie and James Summers and wife Angela all of North Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; Adam Summers and wife Randee of State Road, Ashley Eller and husband Adam and Caitlyn Summers all of North Wilkesboro and four great grandchildren.

 Rita Harrold, 74

Rita Marlene Harrold, age 74, of Liberty, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was born April 19, 1945 in Wilkes County to Boss and Ada Dillard Souther. Mrs. Harrold attended Julian Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Harrold; and several siblings.

Surviving are son, Norman Harrold of Liberty; daughter, Marna Dunn of Tucson, Arizona; brothers, Terry Souther of Liberty, Carl Souther of Thomasville, David Souther of North Wilkesboro; and sister, Joyce Golds of Purlear.

 Woodrow Dowell, 73

Mr. Woodrow "Woodie" Wilson Dowell, age 73 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were September 1,   at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Hall and Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery.  

Mr. Dowell was born April 20, 1946 in Wilkes County to Howard William Dowell and Annie Floss Wooten Dowell.  He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned his Sharpshooter Badge (M-14) Rifle.  He was retired from Wilkes Electric Armature where he worked as an Electrical Tech for 32 years. Woodie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 40 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; Grace Campbell and five brothers; Lonnie Dowell, Bob Dowell, Bill Dowell, Junior Dowell and Paul Dowell.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette Walker Dowell of the home, three daughters; Angela Wood and husband Kevin of North Wilkesboro, Patricia

Mrs. Mary June Bishop Gambill, age 86 of Elkin, formally of the Brushy Mountain Community passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Funeral services were September 1,  at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joe Wood officiating.  Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gambill was born February 19, 1933 in Wilkes County to Paul Bledsoe Bishop and Mary Thelma Bumgarner Bishop. She retired from Cashion Oil Company as their Office Manager.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Buel Goodwin "Buck" Gambill, Jr., an infant son; Phillip Jerome Gambill and a sister; Bill Griffin and spouse Bill.

She is survived by a son; Jerome Gambill and wife Jennifer of Elkin, two grandchildren; Grace Elizabeth Gambill and Lily Hope Gambill, a sister; Jean Bullis and husband Glenn of Wilkesboro and a brother; Pete Bishop and spouse Betty of Wilkesboro.

 James Higgins, 86

James Russell Higgins, age 86, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville. Mr. Higgins was born May 13, 1933 in Wilkes County to Major McKinley and Ethel Lou Handy Higgins. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Austin Higgins; sisters, Hazel Handy and Nellie Mae Higgins Smithey; and brothers, Wayne and Clark Higgins.

     Surviving are his wife, Nina May Watts Higgins; daughter, Sally Wambli Sina Win of Muskogee, Oklahoma; brother, Donald Higgins; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren;

several nieces and nephews.

 James Vannoy, 70

Mr. James Russell Vannoy, age 70 of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, August 29, 2019 at his home.

     Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel.  Bural with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Vannoy was born August 29, 1949 in Wilkes County to Claude Vannoy Sr. and Selma Stokes Vannoy.  He served in the United States Army and did 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife; Gloria Dean Pickens Vannoy and his second wife; Jean Remines Vannoy, one sister; Theresa Vannoy and three brothers; Ronald Vannoy, Claude Vannoy, Jr and Robert Lee Vannoy.

He is survived by two sons; Russell Vannoy and wife; Sandy of North Wilkesboro and Demetrius Vannoy of Florida, eleven grandchildren; Torrence Vannoy, Kirstyn Vannoy, Alisha Vannoy, Russell Vannoy, Sami Bell, Danisha Vannoy, Iesha Vannoy Deonte Vannoy, Shamori Vannoy Demetrius (DJ) Vannoy Jr., and Ejovi Vannoy, three great grandchildren; Kennedi Ascencio, Kassidy Ascencio and Bryton Lane, one sister; JoAnn Vannoy Gayles and husband Jackie of Wilkesboro and two brothers; Allen E.  George Miles, 55

Mr. George William Miles, age 55 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at his home.

Private Family Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Miles was born June 17, 1964 in Flint Michigan to Jack D. Miles and Wilma L. Miles. He was an active member of the Wilkesboro Church of Christ. Mr. Miles was a Lab Chemist with Tyson Technical Services.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; Debbie and two brothers; Greg Dallaire and William "Bill" Miles.

He is survived by his fiancé Shauna Danielle Porter of North Wilkesboro and a sister; Jewel Cousino of Burton, Michigan.

     Gladys Castle, 83

Gladys Zora Castle, age 83, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born August 27, 1936 in Wilkes County to Wade Jonathan and Mattie Laws Castle. Gladys was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She always had a smile for everyone. Ms. Castle was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ward Edward Castle; very special friend, Eugene Jarvis.

She is survived by her siblings, Lloyd Edward Castle and spouse Lorine of Wilkesboro, Evelyn Anderson and spouse Turner of North Wilkesboro, Mary Mash and spouse Jimmy, Ann Bishop, Grace James, David Castle (Heather Anderson) all of Wilkesboro; nieces, Melissa Mash Whitley and Rita Brown; several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 30,   at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Whitley, Pastor Joseph Sturgill officiating and eulogy provided by Chris Bishop. Burial will follow in Moravian Falls Cemetery.

  Linda Koontz, 72

Mrs. Linda Arnett Koontz, age 72 of Millers  Creek, NC passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

She was born July 17, 1947 in St. Augustine FL to Dalton and Catherine Tedder Arnett. Linda was a loving mother, grandmother and devoted wife. She was a remarkable cook and enjoyed hosting holidays with family. She was an avid traveler, who loved discovering new roads and shortcuts. She had a passion for quilting, trying new styles and patterns while creating incredible quilts.  She played piano beautifully with one of her favorites being Nadia's Theme which could fill up the room, she was truly talented.  Linda was very artistic and creative. Her favorite memories were baking Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren and picking out Holiday decorations. Linda loved all aspects of life and tried to experience as much of it as possible. There are no words to accurately express the love she had for others. Linda touched and enriched so many lives and we know she will continue to enrich us all from heaven.

Linda is survived by her husband; Coy Alton Koontz, Jr.  of the home, two daughters; Suzanne Koontz of Millers Creek and Ashley Weaver and husband, Rick of Melbourne Fl three grandchildren; Chase Vogt, Shelby Vogt, Sean Weaver, two brothers; Glenn Arnett and wife Lynn of St. Augustine Fl and Virgil Arnett of Georgia and her devoted dog Toby.

   John Parker, 81

John Rufus Parker, age 81, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, August 26, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born May 16, 1938 in Wilkes County to Coy and Kate Anderson Parker. John was a member of Oakwoods Baptist Church.        He was a US Army Veteran, receiving a medal for carbine and rifle sharpshooter and was a butcher. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Winnie Arrington and Martha Louise Parker McCulley and grandchildren, Valerie Dawn Teague, Jonathan Scott Teague.

Surviving are his sister, Antonia Parker Bailey and spouse R.C. of Winter Haven, Florida; step daughter, Jane E. Osborne of North Wilkesboro; step son, Larry Osborne of North Wilkesboro; great grandchildren, Cameron Teague and Kyleigh Teague; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 30  at Oakwoods Baptist Church with Pastor Christopher Clark officiating.

Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142  followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, PO Box 9, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.  

Pallbearers will be James Anderson, Robert Anderson, Robin Bumgarner, Randy Earp, Sr., Randy Earp, Jr., Ricky Walker, Lee Tedder and Ernie Absher. Honorary pallbearer will be Cameron Teague.
