The wedding of Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner, 7 November 1951
"Asked about her dress, she said excitedly, “It’s so pretty,” and ran over to one of the open suitcases to lift her bride’s dress from it. Beautiful it was, designed for her by Howard Greer. It was cocktail length, one piece, with the fabric a mauve-toned gray marquisette, slightly stiffened. The marquisette started just below the bust line and fell simply into a graceful skirt. The strapless top was taffeta, in a soft shade of pink. The neckline was fashioned into a petal design, ending at the top in angular points. Ava wore the little gray bolero during the ceremony. It was styled into a short cut-away, bordered around the edges and sleeves with the pink, all perfect for Ava’s exquisite rose-petal coloring. Her opera pumps were of faille, dyed the exact gray of the dress and her only jewelry was a double choker of pearls and small pearl earrings with little diamond drops. Ava explained, “My dress was new, I borrowed June’s pink handkerchief. And my slip was both old and blue.” The Sinatras’ wedding bands are perfectly plain thin platinum circlets, Frank’s a little wider than Ava’s. Her band goes with her engagement ring, which is a beautifully cut emerald, about six carats in size, set simply in platinum, with a pear-shaped diamond sloping down either side. “Anyway," Ava continued, “the wedding was beautiful. And do you know—everybody cried, even Axel. Also, thanks to him, we have a permanent record of it because he took home color movies. Lester and his wife had arranged a nice buffet and everyone had champagne, though Frank and I only had one glass, and I was so excited I couldn’t eat a bit of food!”

oh hiiiii to the people who talked about plural vriska!!! personally, i hc that she (along with dave, dirk, and jake) is a system as well!
i hc that she tends towards more of being a council type system (like the person who talked about council type system jake hi hi hi youre so right on that). i think her system is pretty small and features a doc scratch persecutor introject, a protector/persecutor (she's really not sure....) of mindfang who goes by marquisette, and a persecutor introject of spidermom. i think there's also a system little named mirmir (they/them) who is the one most likely to front other than her!!!! she calls it the serket system and she's not open about it to most people. pre-retcon, the only one who knew she was part of a system was terezi (she's met marquisette and mirmir), though others have met some of her alters without knowing it. post-retcon, though, she starts being more open about it, especially to dave, who is the first other system she's ever met in person.
also, (vriska) really likes being in the dreambubbles because the changeable nature of them means that when any of the serket system front, they can sort of change the body so that it matches their internal self! personally i hc that some of the people i hc as plural come up with sort of magical ways to cope with it, and that dirk especially wants to help some of his alters get bodies of their own because that's a thing that's possible for him now (since a lot of ppl in my system wish they had their own bodies lmfao). but i also like hcing that the serket system is actually pretty happy being together in the way they are. also, i think marquisette immediately starts fronting when they meet aranea in the dreambubbles and the ensuing conversation lasts several hours!!!!
YEAHHHHH!!!!!

KTAW DAY 6 | CASTELSERRAILLAN
Tagging: @kiaratheronappreciationweek, @lizzybeth1986, and @sazanes
My headcanons about Castel are not as well-developed as they will be in the future, but I can present five quick thoughts, all subject to change.
Being the descendants of the Kingdom of Bellmere, Castelsarreillan is the largest of Cordonia's duchies and likewise contains the most marquisettes, counties, viscounties, and baronies.
The Wild West-themed bar the TRR crew visits to celebrate Drake's birthday is located in Castelsarreillan. As the artistic hub of the country, it's also home to many eclectic businesses with unique themes.
Castelsarreillan is the founder of the Cordonian Medieval Historical Society mentioned in my fic A Lesson in Sources. Castel prides itself on its preservation of history and has the largest collection of extant artifacts second only to the capital, Thýella.
Kiara and Hana are both heavily involved with the branches of the Cordonian Public Library located in their respective duchies. In Kiara's case, she and Hana cycle through every public library in Castelsarreillan to host and LGBTQ+ themed storytimes for children. The events also include all-ages entertainment for the broader queer community.
Let's end with an angsty headcanon. During the first International Art and Food Festival, Hakim and Joëlle decided to honor the tenth anniversary of their close friend Queen Eleanor's death with an art exhibit. Constantine, still reeling from his second wife's death and a recent assassination attempt against Liam, decides not to go. He makes it very clear he doesn't approve of the exhibition, leading to the breakdown of his friendship with Hakim.

Kim Kardashian and the great historic preservation fail
I have been angered once again by 2022′s MET Gala.
For those unaware: this year’s MET Gala was “gilded glamor” themed and, because nobody can follow directions, Kim Kardashian showed up to it in Marilyn Monroe’s 1960s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress. I have talked before about at length about how I (both a museum professional and historical interpreter specializing in the gilded age) was personally offended by this stunt and by the gala as a whole. It was beyond stupid. However, with the news that came out today about the dress being DAMAGED, I feel the need to address it again and in greater detail.
Why is this a problem?
To fully understand why exactly this is a historic preservation FAILURE lets talk a bit about artifact and textile preservationThere is a very good reason why historical garments and textiles are both not worn and or handled that much with bare human hands. The reason for this that textiles are fragile and break down faster than other types of artifacts both from natural causes (like humidity changes or temperature changes) and the oils in your skin. Yes, the oils in your skin can damage certain types of artifacts. It all comes down to the chemical reactions that occur when those oils and your sweat come into contact with different compounds and materials. This is why MOST museums keep artifacts of any kind behind glass or other barriers away from the public. It's not because they hate you, it's because they want to ensure those artifacts stay preserved longer.Marilyn Monroe’s dress was made from silk marquisette (a natural fiber), and was extremely tight/thin to begin with. As said before it was made to fit Marilyn and her shape perfectly. But the important part to remember that this dress was:
Meant to be tigh
tSHEER (the fabric was very thin to begin with)
Made of natural fibers (which for silk specifically can decompose between 12-24 months)
CREATED IN THE 60s
Not only is the dress itself old, its made of a natural fiber that does not have a very long decomposition time, and the dress is very thin so it can be damaged easier because there is not much holding it together. All of these things make it extra suseptable to degredation by wear or handling
Tumblr media
This was the dress before. Notice again how thin it is.
Tumblr media
This was the dress after.
The noticeable changes seen here are the missing stones (probably torn off from the friction of Kim walking around with that coat and because the fabric is thin), the fabric around the zipper is torn and tattered, and the fabric is buckling under its own tension. This is because it was forcefully stretched to fit on Kim’s body and it weakened the integrity of the already thin fabric. And there is no way to repair this without damaging the dress further. It is forever damaged.
Bottom line: this should have never happened and every person involved should be fired. And I mean EVERY SINGLE PERSON INVOLVED. They are a disgrace to the museum world and should have known better. I do not care if its a Ripley's museum or not. They had a responsibility to protect that dress and they failed.
