(Toledo, 6 MONTS BEFORE D-DAY)
Viserys takes a cautious step towards the board - smiling at his students. "Thank you for accepting this job offer," he humored, looking around the room and familiarizing himself with everyone's faces. Some were familiar like - Aegon, Aemond and Rhaenyra, but some were new like - you, Harwin and Mysaria.
"We'll be living here, for now - until the heist happens and it won't matter wherever you go." he smiled, turning back to the map on his hands. It was a map of Old Valyria (a city that was now filled with nuclear waste) but it was his home - his father's home - and their names will be built around that.
"I thought we were using planets da-I mean sir." Aegon raises his hand. "I was supposed to be Mars, and one-eye can be Uranus." he kicked the chair in front of him - earning a small chuckle from his uncle. "I don't want to be Uranus," Aemond rolls his eye.
"Why?" Aegon frowned.
"It's an anus." Aemond turned to look at him - nailing daggers on his brother's face. "Language! Young man." Viserys scolded, walking back to the board.
He reaches for the chalk, writing on the board what names were available for the choosing. "No one is allowed to use their real names - just in case someone gets captured and etcetera," he mumbled and the crowd erupts into a chorus of agreement.
It made absolute sense to stay anonymous.
Daemon turns to look at you - a mischievous glint on his eyes. "It makes sense," you mumble - playing with a pencil. Viserys turns to look at you - a smile was on his face. "Why don't you choose first?" he offered. There were interesting names on the board.
Lorath, Lys, Myr, Norvos - but Volantis felt right.
"Volantis," you answered quickly - and the man turns to offer other people their choices of names. Daemon wraps his arms around your waist, leaning closer towards your ears. "The oldest and the proudest of all the Nine Free Cities. But Volantis has changed its name - it's Thessaloniki now." he whispered.
Viserys glares at his brother - seeing the closeness between you.
"- and you?" he raised an eyebrow.
Daemon reaches his full height.
"Rhyos. I am Rhyos."
That was the day you started calling yourself Volantis. The man beside you who was ogling at your breasts was Rhyos or Daemon. His face was familiar - you've seen him in the television - from millions of pounds to diamonds to armored cars. He's the biggest criminal in Europe and Asia. He was a fucking shark - but anyone can swim with him, you'd just feel nervous all the time.
The other guy who was staring at Mysaria's ass was Aegon or Norvos. He's not that big of a criminal - but he's wanted for stealing one of the Ambani Family's treasured jewelry. There's a saying 'Steal from the poor and they'll vote you for the next election. Steal from the rich, and they'll bite your ass.'
The guy in front of him was Aemond or Lorath. He went to jail at sixteen for leaking an unreleased episode of his favorite show - pretty much a rookie as the episode was getting aired the following day. Fuck, Game of Thrones eh?
Then there's that beautiful woman a few inches away from you. Her name was Rhaenyra - she is yet to choose a codename, but everyone already knows who she is. She used to be a model in the '00s. The most beautiful woman in the world - was what they called her. Until she was caught laundering billions of euros - she would've gotten away with it if her step-father didn't rat her out.
She's your role model. Your barbie, basically.
And the reason for why you know all of them?
You spend a lot of time reading the news.
Tumblr media
(D-DAY 8.35 AM)
Six months of planning and it was reaching fruition. "Hands where I can see them!" you yell, pointing it at the truck driver. The first step of the plan was getting the unmarked paper bills to the Royal Mint.
"If someone calls the radio, you will answer like there is nothing wrong, okay?." Daemon briefed, pacing back and forth between the men - exuding his confident aura.
This was one of the few moments you were thankful for the minimum wage. These men were paid 1,600 euros per month - thus they didn't care whether or not their cars were getting hijacked. If their daughters were in the trunk, they wouldn't have opened it - but paper? Darling, they couldn't have given a lesser fuck.
"Now, let's go." he turned to look at you - leading the team towards the hijacked cars. Mysaria hands you a blonde wig - fixing it on while you settle the seatbelt in between your breasts.
"Don't take your eyes off the girl, we can't afford mistakes." Daemon looks at you - holding your chin softly. He takes a moment - licking his lips, then moving back and tapping the car - telling Mysaria to drive away.
"Let's find the little lamb," Mysaria breathes - driving through the empty road swiftly. "Who even takes a field trip to a Royal Mint? It sounds boring," you slump on your chair, holding the seatbelt tightly as you cruise closer to the Mint.
"Boring when you're poor, but classy when you're rich." she replied.
Tumblr media
Entering the Mint was easy - but finding the little lamb.
"Where the fuck is she?" Mysaria curses, opening all the bathroom stalls. "It's like a game of Where is Waldo," you sigh - pointing the gun at every door you open. "What?" she raised an eyebrow, unfamiliar with the game. "It's a game where you find this little guy in a striped shirt," you explain and she rolls her eyes.
"Where is the little lamb," she rephrased the game - smiling in satisfaction as she opened the last stall. Revealing Cersie Lannister.
"Thank the Seven," you breathed - grabbing the girl by her arm and dragging her to where all the hostages were. "I-I need my phone," the girl stuttered reaching for the Iphone on Mysaria's hands.
The older woman pulls it away.
"Influencers," you mumble like a slur - earning a glare from the child.
"My boyfriend took my phone and retweeted a fucking anti-climate change movement. I don't care if I die today - I will get cancelled." she cried, and you pointed a gun at her waist - making her cries harden. "Are you serious?" you frown, biting back a loud laugh.
Being cancelled was going to be the least of her worries.
Tumblr media
Daemon removes his mask as the last hostage puts on a blindfold. "Happy Friday, I hope everyone has had the chance to go to do their novenas. I want to say sorry for what we're doing today, it's not a happy way to end your week. Follow our instructions and you'll be safe." he smiled, Aegon nods his head - telling him that all the phones were currently under control.
"I hope that you enjoy this experience - write a book about it in the future, it might get you into a good college. Harvard or Yale, they love their sob stories." he chuckled, playing with his rifle that he named 'Dark Sister.'
A groan escapes your mouth, pointing a pistol at an old man's head. "What's the fucking pin?" you cursed, holding his Samsung with your left hand. A tear rolls down the man's eye. "Pin?" you repeat in an annoyed way - knowing that this wasn't supposed to be your job.
Another tear falls down his eyes.
"0."
"0."
"0."
He lowered his head in shame.
"0." he whispered, and a small laugh exits your mouth.
"You were acting really smart with me - and your pin is 0000?" you tease him, throwing his phone down the other sacks of phone. "Anyways, no shame in that." you chuckle, taking a step away from him.
"All the phones are unlocked, Lorath - you know what to do."
Aemond nods - smiling at you.
Tumblr media
(Toledo, 6-MONTHS BEFORE D-DAY)
"Do you know why I do this?" Rhaenyra slurred - laying on your bed while she stunk of whiskey and vodka. "- because I want my sons back. I want them back from their father - whose actually not their real father." she chuckled bitterly, feeling the tears fall from her irises.
She grabs into your collar - pulling you closer to her body.
"I know where they are - they're in America with their fake grandparents, and I'll get them back once I get the money." she swore to herself, ultimately mumbling their names before falling back asleep.

Space Sweepers and the History of Working Class People In Space
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This week saw the release of Space Sweepers, Korea’s first big budget special effects space movie extravaganza. There are a lot of interesting things to say about this movie, but one of the things that makes it stand out is it’s an excellent portrayal of people in space who are skint.
See, I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably never going into space. Unless you’re a highly trained technical specialist (well done!) or a billionaire (pay your taxes!), your best shot at seeing Earth from space within your lifetime is the development of realistic-yet-cheap VR headsets.
And the thing is, a lot of the time this holds up in sci-fi as well. Space travellers are either living in a post-scarcity utopia, are part of the military, or are some kind of genius scientists.
Even where we see supposedly salt-of-the-Earth relatable types, like Han Solo or Mal Reynolds, their scruffy outfits and roguish ways can’t quite cover for the fact that they own and live in the equivalent of a massive luxury yacht or private plane. Serenity may look like a rust bucket, but it’s far from the equivalent of a white van, and while Mal is constantly complaining about the costs of fuel and repairs, that doesn’t change the fact that he seems to own the ship outright, and in “Oxygen” he appears ready to buy the ship for cash.
As for Han Solo, leaving for a moment his humble origins and that he won the ship in a card game, within the Galaxy Far Far Away the ratio of space travellers to non-space travellers doesn’t seem that different from the one on Earth. Yes, there are lots of smugglers and Tie-fighter pilots and interplanetary bounty hunters, but for every one of them there are millions of Tusken sand raiders, Jawa scrap merchants, moisture farmers and Corellian street rats. Spacecraft might come and go from the spires of Coruscant as regularly as buses, but the population density is such that most people on that planet will be lucky to see sunlight, let alone the stars.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, the chances of an ordinary person getting into space even in the foreseeable future vary between Willy Wonka Golden ticket level lucky, or truly dystopian. On the one hand, Elon Musk has announced the first all-civilian mission to space, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman (so, not what you’d call an everyman), two seats given to people who have won a place by donating to St Jude’s Hospital (it probably won’t be one of the smaller donors), and finally, one lucky front-line health worker.
But Elon Musk wants to colonise Mars, and sadly billionaires still need people to clean the toilets, so Musk has other ideas for how ordinary people might get into space. Unfortunately that idea is indentured slavery, demonstrating that the most prescient science fiction writers of our generation are the writers of first-person shooters.
This is why, outside of post-scarcity-fully-automated-luxury-space-communism, and the military, science fiction is always oddly quiet about money. With a few honourable exceptions.
We Just Work Here
The first and most obvious reason why any ordinary working-class person would end up in space is “they’re paid to”.
Pretty much the codifier of working-class people in space is Alien. The crew of Nostromo aren’t scientists, they’ve not got The Right Stuff. Nobody on that ship is getting a high school named after them. The crew of the Nostromo are basically truck drivers who venture off the highway and run into something nasty. Yes, ironically they show a great deal more competence, professionalism and intelligence in encountering an alien threat than the actual scientists in the prequel movie, but the first conversation these characters have when they come out of hyper sleep is about money. From the outset, these are people in a place of work.
It’s a model that set the format for gritty-industrial-working-class-people in space movies going forward for better or worse. Event Horizon just lifts Alien’s aesthetic completely for the rescue ship Lewis & Clark, as does the videogame series Dead Space, like Alien, set aboard a mining ship.
Away from the horror genre, Outland sees Sean Connery play sheriff in a final frontier mining town that could have taken place in the same world as Alien.
And of course, Red Dwarf, which not only made good use of the Alien aesthetic, but also cast the colony commander from Aliens as their Captain, to tell the story of chicken soup repairmen in space.
Across all of these stories, and of course the aforementioned videogames, the life of the blue collar space traveller is an unpleasant one, exploited by a company that not only controls your life while you work, but also owns all of your food, water and air. Indeed, it’s not rare for them to go further. In Moon, another film where the spacemen-to-earthmen ratio seems not far what it is now, Sam Bell’s employer decides to save the cost of training employees and ferrying them back and forth from Earth to the Moon by taking one employee and filling a cellar full of his pre-programmed, short-lived disposable clones.
Space Sweepers
Public Transport
But maybe you don’t want to work for “the Man”, not an unwise call given the Man is probably trying to feed you to something horrible in the hope of creating a new bioweapon. One surprisingly under-utilised method of getting into space is public transport.
In The Fifth Element, Bruce Willis plays a special-forces-operative-turned-cab-driver who, as part of his cover, wins a ticket to go on a space cruise. Although looking at the sets and the extras in this movie, as well as the packed-in-as-tightly-as-we-can apartments back on Earth, one gets the impression this is not an option open to the majority of working joes.
Perhaps the best example of this is in the shockingly under-loved 2018 flick, Prospect, featuring future Mandalorian Pedro Pascal.
In Prospect, the spaceship is little more than a rotating framework filled with cargo containers in front of a massive engine. The father and daughter prospecting team are on board a lander that resembles nothing so much as an old Apollo Lunar Lander on the inside, and as the mothership approaches their destination the ship doesn’t even stop, it just releases the lander, tells them when the ship is going to be passing back that way and warns them the line is being terminated, so there won’t be another ship passing that way.
This is a model it would be fantastic to see more of. The landing module is small enough that it’s entirely plausible that even these not-very-well-off characters could buy, hire or rent one. Rather than having the freedom of the space ways like Mal or Han, their travel options are entirely restricted by what destinations are profitable for large shipping companies and whether they’ll let you tag along. And while on the surface the aesthetic looks a bit Alien, in truth it feels far more like it’s cobbled together from relics of the actual space age.
Borrow Your Way Into Space
And finally, of course, there’s the Elon Musk solution. Borrow your way into space. One of the early places to use this idea was Gateway, by Frederik Pohl. Frederik Pohl in particular is fantastic at writing science fiction worlds where people actually have to worry about money. In Gateway and its sequels humanity has discovered Ancient Aliens left a space station nearby, stocked with a lot of spaceships. Being alien technology, humans can’t control the ships accurately, they’re limited pretty much to pressing the “Stop” and “Go” buttons, and when the ship flies off it might land on a world of fabulous riches, or it might chuck you into the heart of a star.
Prospectors who want to try their luck in these ships have to take out a loan to get to the station, and throughout the novel the protagonist is constantly aware of how many credits are in his account.
Which brings us back around to Space Sweepers. At first glance the Space Sweepers set-up might seem similar to that of the Millennium Falcon or Serenity – an extremely “used” looking ship run by a rag-tag bunch of misfits. But the first time we see the protagonist, Tae-ho, he’s in a pawn shop. As soon as he gets back to the ship we learn the crew are still paying off the cost of the ship, as well as the costs of repairs and parts.
We see an awful lot of “Space sweepers” throughout the film, junk collectors gathering up salvage from Earth’s orbiting collection of derelict spacecraft and defunct satellites. But these people don’t seem like roguish space pirates, the impression they give is more akin to app-based gig workers.
This is compounded by another issue – that to work in space you need a visa, with citizenship limited to the wealthy few who are able to afford a place on the deluxe orbiting space habitats.
Everything in Space Sweepers is driven by money, whether it’s Tao-Ho’s attempts to raise enough money to find his daughter, the robot, Bubs, and her attempt to get a humanoid body that reflects her gender, and of course, the $2 million reward for “Dorothy” which drives the whole plot.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Often space-based sci-fi is about the fantasy of freedom, of exploration. Even shows like Star Trek give us characters whose job isn’t much more than to fly around having adventures. But there is rich storytelling to be done about the people who have to clean the space toilets.
Chris Farnell’s novella series, Fermi’s Progress, is about a ship whose FTL drive vaporises planets, and features at least one space traveller who isn’t a scientist, super soldier or billionaire (although to be fair the other three characters are exactly that). You can find part one here.

Obesity and unsaturated fats (permalink)
Scott Alexander does a very deep dive into the literature on diet, weight, and saturated vs unsaturated fats.
https://slatestarcodex.com/2020/03/10/for-then-against-high-saturated-fat-diets/
The most important elements for me were first, the validation that something really has changed: average US adult men's weight went from 155lbs to 195lbs from the 1800s to today. The 90th percentile 1800s man weighed 185lbs, today, it's 320lbs. US obesity rates in the 1800s were 1%. Today, they're 25%.
But the usual culprits can't explain the change: they ate more bread and potatoes in the 1800s, for one thing.
In China, obesity rates were very low even with a diet dominated by white rice.
1970s France had 1800s US obesity rates, on a diet of "baguettes, pastries, cheese, meat. Lots of sugar, white flour, and fat."
It's true that some tactics (intermittent fasting, low-carbing) work for some people, but they're not what worked in 1970s France or 1800s USA. So if those things work, they're "hacks" – not an indictment of carbs or eating three meals a day.
There's a widespread theory that the change is driven by the switch from saturated to unsaturated fats, which was driven by spiking heart disease in the 1950s. It's likely this heart disease epidemic can be attributed to the vast increase in smoking a couple decades earlier, but the tobacco industry's denial machine meant that the blame fell on diet, and the US (and then global) diet's fat composition shifted dramatically.
We ate a lot fewer animal-derived fats and a lot more plant-derived fats. These fats had lots more Omega 6s and (to a lesser extent) 3s, and the ratio of these Omegas also changed dramatically, both in our diet and in our bodily composition. Intriguingly, these play a significant role in metabolism. There's a plausible ring to this whole business – particularly as a way of crisping up what we mean when we say "avoid processed foods." What is "processing?" Maybe it's doing something that requires vegetable fats.
Unfortunately, neither the literature nor the lived experience of experimenters support the theory. Studies don't support it. Meta analyses don't support it. Reddit forums skew heavily to people saying it didn't work for them (dotted with people for whom it did).
Which makes weight gain a mystery. It can't be (just) exercise: we're exercising more now than we did 40 years ago, and we're heavier now. Studies about causes are inconclusive overall, but clear that weight gain is more explained by diet than exercise. What's more, we're seeing weight gain in lab rats, pets and feral animals, so exercise seems an unlikely culprit here.
Alexander ponders other possible causes: plastics or other contaminants in our diet, or that it's a "ratchet" (once your weight set point changes, it doesn't change back.). Both have little evidence to support them.
He concludes that he's "more confused than when I started it," but will avoid unsaturated fats where possible, with the exceptions of Omega-3 rich oils (fish/olive oil).
I am likewise confused, but also better-informed than I was before I read his post.
Tumblr media
The satiety index (permalink)
I lost ~100lbs in 2002/3 with a low-carb diet. The thing I immediately noticed when I started eating (lots) more fat and (lots) less carbs was that I was always satiated, with none of the food cravings that had plagued me all my life.
No other diet since has had that effect. I really struggle with cravings (and have put 50lbs back on through my 40s, though some of that is muscle from a much higher level of exercise). For me, satiety is the barrier to sticking to any diet. I don't just get ravenous, I get these all-consuming cravings that I can't put out of my mind, even if I resist them (and the longer I resist, the more likely it is that I'll really blow it out when I give in at last).
So I was really interested in this 1995 open access study, "A Satiety Index of common foods," which offers a league table of the foods that made subjects feel full.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/15701207_A_Satiety_Index_of_common_foods
The meaty (heh) parts are in these charts on pp682-3.

Sensor Tower's VPNs and adblockers spied on users (permalink)
Sensor Tower, a company that made apps billed as privacy-protecting, installed man-in-the-middle certificates on your devices that let them spy on everything you did online.
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/craigsilverman/vpn-and-ad-blocking-apps-sensor-tower
They made 20+ VPN apps for Android and Ios, but didn't disclose that all those apps were owned by analytics company, Sensor Tower. The apps had names like "Free and Unlimited VPN, Luna VPN, Mobile Data, and Adblock Focus."
The apps installed a "root certificate" in users' devices. With this cert, the company could insert itself in all the device's otherwise secure, encrypted sessions – web browsing, email, etc. Sensor Tower admits that they collected data using this cert, but insists that it was "anonymized," which is something most computer scientists agree is likely impossible for this kind of data. Re-identification of anonymized data is devilishly hard to avoid.
The claim is made even less credible when you listen to the company's other claims about its practices, such as the idea that they hid the authorship of their apps "for competitive reasons."
Or this howler: that "the vast majority of these apps listed are now defunct (inactive) and a few are in the process of sunsetting." Well, yes, they were removed for violating their users' privacy. It's not like the company had a change of heart or anything.
And then there's this: "Apple and Google restrict root certificate privileges due to the security risk to users. Sensor Tower's apps bypass the restrictions by prompting users to install a certificate through an external website after an app is downloaded."

Twitter's new Terms of Service help academics(permalink)
Twitter just published a new, and much-improved developer policy, one that permits academics to field bots for research and auditing purposes.
https://blog.twitter.com/developer/en_us/topics/community/2020/twitter_developer_policy_update.html
"Researchers will be able to share an unlimited number of Tweet IDs and/or User IDs, if they're doing so on behalf of an academic institution and for the sole purpose of non-commercial research, such as peer review."
https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/10/twitter-rewrites-developer-policy-to-better-support-academic-research-and-use-of-good-bots/
Twitter's also creating a bot registry that must include contact info for the botmaster, so that "it's easier for everyone on Twitter to know what's a bot – and what's not."
https://developer.twitter.com/en/developer-terms/policy#4-b
Italy's "I Stay in the House" law (permalink)
The FAQ for the Italian government's "I Stay In the House" decree is a fascinating document:
http://www.governo.it/it/articolo/decreto-iorestoacasa-domande-frequenti-sulle-misure-adottate-dal-governo/14278
Most notably, Italy has kicked out its tourists. As Bruce Sterling writes, "It's a tourist-ectomy. An Italy devoid of all tourists. It's fantastic, unheard-of. Surely this hasn't happened in at least 700 years."
https://www.wired.com/beyond-the-beyond/2020/03/stay-house-decree/
People are allowed to go to work, to shop, and to run errands, provided it is for an "essential purpose," which you must prove "by means of a self-declaration which can be made on pre-printed forms already supplied to the state and local police forces. The veracity of the self-declarations will be subject to subsequent checks and the non-veracity constitutes a crime."
Business travelers are permitted to enter and leave the country, cab, delivery and freight drivers are allowed to do their jobs, and "outdoor motor activity is allowed as long as not in a group."
Public offices are open. Training activities are suspended. Government offices need to provide hand santizer, but if they run out, they have to stay open ("disinfectant is a precautionary measure but itstemporary unavailability does not justify the closure of the office").
Bars, pubs and restaurants may open from 6AM to 6PM, but have to cancel live music, games and screening events. Theaters, cinemas and museums are closed.
Schools are closed. Universities are closed. Exams and graduations will be conducted by video-link. Med schools are not closed. Research institutions are not closed.
Masses and funerals are canceled. Islamic Friday prayers are canceled.
Farms are open.

Scam-buster hacks into a scam-factory (permalink)
Jim Browning is a talented and prolific scambaiter. He calls the numbers listed in pop-up tech support scams and has the scammers log into a specially prepared system that lets him trace them.
In his latest adventure, Browning thoroughly turns the tables on http://Faremart.com , a Delhi travel agency that was the front for a sprawling network of tech-support scammers taking in millions every year through fraud.
Browning not only traces the scammers: he breaks into their unsecured CCTV network so he can watch them work. He compromises their phone system and listens to the recordings of all their scam-sessions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le71yVPh4uk
He gets hold of their ledgers, which list how much money each scam nets for the gang. He doxes the scammers and learns their real names. He gets a confederate to fly a drone over their HQ and maps out their comings and going.
In part II, Browning treats us to a delightful scambaiting session in which he mercilessly trolls a scammer who claims to be in San Jose, CA, tripping him up in a series of ever-more-desperate lies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV-qa9M-o4E
It's part of a growing genre of journalists who explore and document the operations of overseas scam operations. See, for example, Reply All's excellent podcasts on this:

There are two more parts to come in Browning's series (you can watch them now on his Patreon, apparently):

He also turned his footage over to the BBC's flagship investigative programme, Panorama, which has produced its own doc based on it:

Postmortem: the catastrophic EU Copyright Directive (postmortem)
Yesterday, the Senate Subcommittee on Intellectual Property held hearings on "Copyright Law in Foreign Jurisdictions," at which two key copyright experts testified on last year's catastrophic EU Copyright Directive.
First up was Pam Samuelson, one of America's leading copyright experts, who explained in eye-watering detail how the compromises made to pass the Copyright Directive produced an incoherent mess that no one can figure out how to implement in law.
https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Samuelson%20Testimony.pdf
Next was Julia Reda, who served in the EU Parliament during the passage of the directive and helped spearhead the opposition to it.
Her testimony really shows you where the bodies were buried: how the EU knew it was making a pig's ear out of things.
https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Reda%20Testimony.pdf
Both are essential reading for anyone striving to understand Article 17 (formerly Article 13) – it is such a tangle of garbage lawmaking that these kinds of guides are indispensable.

Podcast: A Lever Without a Fulcrum Is Just a Stick (permalink)
I've just posted my latest podcast: a reading of my new Locus Magazine column, "A Lever Without a Fulcrum Is Just a Stick," on how copyright failed artists and enriched corporations and what we can do about it.
https://craphound.com/podcast/2020/03/11/a-lever-without-a-fulcrum-is-just-a-stick-2/
Tldr: Giving monopolies to artists doesn't help them gain leverage over the super-concentrated entertainment industry, because the corporations control access to audiences and force artists to sign away those monopolies to get past their gatekeeping.
The more monopolies we give artists, the more monopolies are transfered to corporations, and the more they dominate the market and thus the more they can retain from the earnings generated by the artists' works.
Fights like the EU Copyright Directive are a distraction, a fight over shifting some points from Big Tech's balance sheet to Big Content's – but without any mechanism to move more of that revenue to creators.
Enriching creators means thinking beyond more "monopoly"-style copyright: instead, we have to think about inalienable rights that can be taken away through one-sided contracts (like the "reversion right" that lets US artists take back copyrights after 35 years).
And we have to think beyond copyright itself, by beefing up competition laws to break up entertainment cartels, and by beefing up labor laws to let artists form unions.
There is a role for copyright, but in things like extended collective licensing that would allow all online platforms to access the same catalog and pay for it based on the number of users they have, so a new platform pays pennies while Youtube pays hundreds of millions.
These blanket licenses have been key to keeping other forums for artistic revenues open: think of what the world would be like if one club or radio station could buy the exclusive rights to play the hits of the day, and then use their ensuring dominance to squeeze artists.
If you prefer the written work, you can read the column here for yourself, of course:

“Ladybug is so going to kill me,” Chat Noir mutters as he nudges the kickstand and pulls a Honda 600F4i out into the narrow alley. She’s bright green and exactly the kind of thing he’s had dreams about ever since he started playing racing games as a little boy. He loves the distinctive purr of a Ferrari, don’t get him wrong, but a motorbike?
Jamming the key into the ignition, Chat turns it clockwise and frowns when it doesn’t quite kick to life. The engine chugs a little before dying and Chat realises that he may be a racing game enthusiast, but the virtual world has never required him to turn the damn thing on!
At a loss, Chat Noir stares down at the controls and tries not to panic, “How do I start this thing?”
He begins hearing the voices of akumatised citizens echo off the brick walls of the alley and he hops back off the bike to get another good look. There’s a gearshift near his foot and he fiddles with it, watching the gears turn, “I should probably put it into neutral? Maybe?” Chat mounts the bike again and flicks it into neutral with his boot, “And brakes. Definitely brakes.”
That part is easy enough. He assumes they’re on the right hand side and his suspicions are more or less confirmed by the click he hears come from in front of his seat, “And I don’t have the slightest clue what this is for, but maybe I should press it too.”
It’s the clutch of course, as he soon comes to realise once he flicks the on switch again and revs the throttle. The bike roars to life and a burst of adrenaline blooms in his belly at the sound, goose pimples breaking out along the exposed skin of his neck. He’s always wanted to drive a motorbike but the video games pale in comparison to having the real thing underneath of him, the engine’s deep rumble as addictive as Chat’s indomitable need for speed. He’s always been an adrenaline junkie and here was his chance to try it out in the worst of conditions with lives on the line.
He revs the throttle again and releases the brake.
“WOOOO!” Chat takes off like a literal bullet and narrowly misses a lamppost as he yanks the handlebars to the side, dipping so low he nearly scrapes his knee on the asphalt. He rights himself but only barely, steering around a burning car and drifting out into the boulevard. The roar of the motorbike draws the attention of the mob and Chat skids to a stop, planting his steel-clad boot on the ground and letting the bike spin around parabolically, turning him in the opposite direction.
Trap: laid.
Without looking back, Chat lays on the bike’s throttle and accelerates down the road, driving in and out of the path of abandoned cars and shrapnel blocking the streets. His distraction is working and he careens through the side streets of the neighbouring arrondissements in the hopes that they’ll follow his lead and head over to the Champs de Mars where Ladybug is no doubt waiting for the rest of them to draw the crowd. Swerving through a roundabout, Chat angles his hip and practically grinds off his kneecap to keep his balance, speeding through the throngs of people and leading them westbound as fast as he can go.
He’s flying at 60km/h over sidewalks and islands when he glances back behind him, spotting four or five motorbikes making chase. A BMW sneaks in just ahead of them and Chat tugs on the throttle and prays to every deity he can think of for some divine intervention as he careens up a median and catches air over a métro station sign. He continues to head across the avenue and pulls out in front of another sportscar, immediately drawing its fire. Chat ducks between an abandoned cube van and slams on the breaks, waiting for the vehicle to fly ahead of him before revving his throttle and hightail it down an adjacent street.
Scramming south towards le Parthéon , Chat squeals through a one way alley and emerges onto another boulevard, narrowly avoiding a group of robbers counting their riches near a rubbish dumpster. They quickly join the chase and Chat skids, clasping the clutch and shifting gears. He can hear the motorbikes catching up behind him and with nowhere else to run, he blasts down the winding Rue de la Montagne Saint Geneviève until he’s cut off by a transport van intentionally blocking his path west on Rue Cujas . He’s trapped like a rat in a cage and Chat swallows, closes his eyes and hopes that whatever happens to him in this moment, Ladybug’s cure can put him back together again.
Without slowing, Chat drops to the side of his motorbike and lets it fly out from under him, cranking it leftwards and letting it slide in front. He hits the concrete hard and drifts underneath the van at the same velocity of his bike, covering his eyes as two of the motorbikes following him crash into the van he’d just ducked under, sending shrapnel and petrol flying everywhere.
He skids to a stop several metres away and finally opens his eyes, watching the carnage unfold for half a second before patting himself over. He’s not bleeding, nothing’s broken and miraculously, he’s still somehow intact.
His bike sits a few metres away and it’s a little scraped but looking no worse for wear and Chat climbs back on, revving the throttle and turning onto a side road towards Luxembourg . Traffic is still somehow moving, albeit barely, and Chat takes his chances, snaking through cars in the opposite direction down a one way road. He bobs and slices his way between burning police cars and grocery vans and glances through his sideview mirrors as what seems like hundreds of thousands of people make chase which is just fine and all, except the roads ahead of him are quickly beginning to fill up with people too.
Just before the intersection of Sèvres-Babylone , Chat revs and slams on the brakes at the same time, spinning his bike and creating a smoke screen all around him. It works like a charm when he’s playing Ride 3 and he thanks his lucky stars as some of his pursuers get lost in the soot so he can tear down Rue de Babylone mostly unhindered by the mob. He makes it all the way to Saint François Xavier before his tail catches up with him and Chat just barely manages to weave out of the way to avoid them by passing a truck, pulling out in front of it for cover. The red BMW that’s been on his ass since le Quartier latin veers around the truck and Chat has to narrowly pass between two incoming vehicles, nearly beheading himself on their mirrors as he clips a median and speeds through some tree laden scrub. Unable to follow him, the BMW hits a curb and flips several times, crashing into a storefront on the other side of the intersection.
“Serves him right for driving a BMW,” Chat grumbles, approaching l’École Militaire with all the speed he can manage. The Eiffel Tower is in plain sight and he can see the rest of the heroes approaching from the northern and western arrondissements with mobs of people hurling obscenities behind them and suddenly there’s nowhere for him to go, the road completely barricaded with overturned vehicles and chunks of crumbled facade.
There’s only two ways to get around it: through it, or over it.
Snatching his baton from the small of his back, Chat extends it beneath his bike and screams at the top of his lungs as he propels himself into the air and over the mountain of debris. He loses his grasp on gravity and his legs go flying up behind him and Chat just holds onto the handlebars for dear life and hopes that he lands on his wheels and not on his face in front of everyone, but especially not when there’s a mob of a million angry, magically enraged citizens ready to rip him to shreds.
The front wheel begins to turn downwards and Chat’s eyes rival the circumference of saucers as he fights to regain his balance, his body tipping ass over tit over the handlebars. He tucks his knees in on a hope and a prayer and gets his boots up near his ears to try and yank the front wheel of the bike back up so it doesn’t flip and burst into flames on landing and merdemerdemerde he’s going to die, he’s going to die, he is so going to die—
THUNK!
Chat’s bike lands so hard his teeth chatter but somehow, once again, he’s miraculously alive and still in one piece. Whooping with pure adrenaline coursing through his veins, he hollers at the trailing mob to catch up with him and tears down the Champ de Mars towards the Eiffel Tower like a bat out of hell.

Ahoy Matey! Tomorrow, Tuesday the 21st, at 2pm Eastern US time, we’re going live with the Pirates of Pugmire Kickstarter!
So, as you might imagine, we’re pretty busy and excited over here. This is the first major sourcebook for Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau that we’re doing to expand on the lands (waters) outside of the main dog and cat areas, plus it will contain playable Lizard and Bird character info, and a three-part adventure chronicle.
Very much the sort of additions to the first main books that are a load of fun for us to create – and we think to play! – and then you add in PIRATES!, and gunpowder and alchemical weapons, and new classes for the dogs and cats, and treasure chests, and sailing the Acid Sea, and, and, and…
Yarrrr!
The Realm illustration by Gunship Revolution
What I’m saying is, it was a blast to work with Eddy on pulling this all together using his simplified 5e rules, and we hope folks will check it out!
In fact, Eddy recorded design podcast installments all during the process, and combined them into last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast. He goes into our thinking at each step along the way; examining the thinking behind why we went with a Pirate theme for that part of the Realm of Pugmire, how the Birds and Reptiles came to be the uplifted pets for this book rather than say, Mice and Rats, and how an adventure chronicle needs to be designed so it works for beginning and experienced players alike.
As always, you can find that Onyx Pathcast on your favorite podcast venues, as well as on our host, Podbean: https://onyxpathcast.podbean.com/
As we’ve done with our past bunch of Kickstarters, backers will get text sections throughout the KS and be able to have pretty much the full text before the KS is done. This helps us in two ways.
One, having the text done before the KS means the chances of mis-timing the delivery of the project drop really far down – since so many of our previous KS delivery issues were getting the writing done and ready for layout.
Second, this gives backers a chance to see just where we’re going with the book and to pledge accordingly. The raw text isn’t as easy to read as the finished layout, but it is all there. We want folks to pledge to help a project they want to see get into stores, not get stuck with a book they actually don’t like.

That’s not the only Realms of Pugmire news either!
Fetch Quest, our family-friendly cooperative card game which Kickstarted last year, is going on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG and DriveThruCards on Wednesday!
This is timed to coincide with FQ being available in your Friendly Local Gamestores as it hits retail thanks to entering distribution channels via our pals at Studio2. It is one more step to opening up new ways for you to have access to getting our games, so if your local retailer hasn’t ordered a few yet, let them know you’re interested, please!
Speaking of FLGSs, one of the most supportive of Onyx Path‘s efforts these last years has been Noble Knight Games and they are having a huge sale right now that includes a bunch of our books including some of the harder to find 20th Anniversary Deluxes. Check it out here: https://www.nobleknight.com/Role-Playing-Games/Publisher/Onyx-Path-Publishing
While we’re focusing on the Pirates of Pugmire kickstarter right now, we’ve got so many projects coming at you in the next few months, and some surprises we haven’t even talked about yet. In our Monday Meeting today, we were just jumping from game line to game line with releases, Advance PDFs, Backer PDFs, ongoing projects, and getting new creators involved.
We’re putting the last touches on the StoryPath Community Content site for Scion, for example, which doesn’t show up on our project progress report, but which is going to be a pretty great place for any Scion creators waiting to jump in with their ideas for projects.
The Realm illustration by Gunship Revolution
Speaking of Scion, and how to play it – which we were, right? – Matthew, Eddy, and Dixie are going to be broadcasting a Scion Actual Play session via Google Hangouts Wednesday night. The Terrible Trio of Terrificness have been itching for a chance to play together, and this is the start of that event!
We’ll have links later to the play, and it’ll be recorded and probably divided up for YouTube and Pathcast releases, but try and drop in to the Hangout as they play: it should be a blast, and informative if you are still working on how to get started with Scion. Learn along with the gang!
Phew, so much is happening as Summer gets closer and closer, with our:
Many Worlds, One Path!
BLURBS!

The Break of Day: Chapter 9
Trigger warnings- this chapter is slightly NSFW and definitely full of violence. Read at your own risk.
How do we feel about this fic so far? It’s coming along slow but I want to do it justice for my beautiful muse.
Louis was groggy when he awoke. He was exhausted- but then he remembered why he was so tired, and a lazy smile appeared. The way Grace moved under him, assuming control of her own pleasure- it was more erotic than Louis had been prepared for. He had never imagined a woman’s touch to enrapture him so completely, but when he thought about her kisses, her touches, her soft body, her whimpers falling against his pillow, he knew he had found the one who would fill the void inside of him. That revelation shocked him; could he truly have found his mate?
He opened his eyes, rolling over to finally tell Grace his thoughts. Her side of the cushion was empty.
Awakening fully, Louis searched his dwelling for her energy, but again, nothing. He stood fully, reaching for his trousers to cover himself before physically trying to find her. When he was satisfied that he was indeed alone, he scoffed, irritated. Was it not just like a woman to beg for his affections, only to leave when he relinquished himself to her? Louis crossed his arms, shaking his head, annoyed.
Then, he realized what was particularly odd about her absence. Louis breathed in steadily, and all coherent thought stopped. There was another scent here, other than his own, and other than Grace’s.
Someone else was in his staying. Someone else was here with Grace and him. And when Louis scented the air again, he knew exactly whom.
But he didn’t have to think on it long, as a carefully folded piece of paper, resting on his table, caught his eyes. He snatched it up, tearing it open, and read the contents quickly.
You want her?
We will be in the north side of the city, where industry died. Look for my men- they will bring you to us.
Come and get her.
Louis’ eyes flared with a fire he never knew could glow so bright. He clenched his fists, crumpling the note in his hand and imagining it could turn to dust.
Wordlessly, he dressed, and ascended into the night in a cold rage. Louis could already smell blood; and if Grace were harmed, he would have more than his fill of it.
____
Deep into the northern end of the city, where the once industrial neighborhood fell to ruin long ago, leaving behind husks of factories rampant with the slime of society, and apartment shacks filled with those less than fortunate to have to stay. Louis could hear mixes of night life, keeping to the shadows to avoid unwanted attention of nightly wanderers seeking patrons for their various products: sex, weapons, or drugs.
Louis tried scenting the air for any sign of Grace, but it was too convoluted, and the individual trails were muddled in the night. He huffed in aggravation. What kind of games was this man playing at, leaving such a cryptic note in such a bold place?
“Hey,” a voice called out.
Louis turned to face the approaching pair of men, his eyes glowing already. He caught the stink of death on them, and instantly knew they were freshly turned. Perhaps only a few months of rot on them. He hissed angrily, his stance lowering, ready to attack.
The two trembled only slightly, but held their ground. “We were told to take you to our master. He wants to talk to you.”
“And I him,” Louis said curtly, his voice dangerously low.
“Follow us,” the other said, and they turned swiftly toward the dark end of the alley.
Louis straightened himself, craning his neck until he heard a small crack. It was time to face this bastard after all.
____
Far beyond the livable sections of the borough, into the rotten edges of the city, lay a crumbling building. It seemed as if it were a church at one time, but the layers of graffiti and filth at turned it into a sick satire of itself. The three vampires ascended the decrepit concrete steps, Louis’ pair of escorts stepping forward to grab the rotting, wooden doors and push them open.
Louis entered into a space that reeked of death as much as it did dust. The stone pillars that held the walls and framed the shattered, stained glass windows were full of cracks. Nests for birds or rats crowned each column, spider webs draping like tulle against the once delicately painted ceiling. The pews that no doubt once stood in orderly rows were comically piled against either side of the sanctuary like a child’s blocks. The tacky checkered floors echoed with footsteps as Louis continued down the jagged aisle, approaching the small congregation and the strange man that sat above them. Five newborns, including the ones who escorted Louis inside, took their places on either side of a contraption only fit for a madman. Wooden steps formed from crates and bookshelves led up to some kind of stage, perhaps what was once a sturdy, antique table. Atop was a rather intricate wooden throne, dusty red velvet and chafing golden paint alluding to a once ecclesiastical role. Sitting upon this throne was the man whom Louis was sure he had scented in his bedroom earlier that evening, the one who had taken something dear to him from within his arms. Robert grinned wildly as soon as Louis was in front of him, and Louis only sneered; because at Robert’s feet, was Grace.
Her clothes were torn to shreds. The once pretty blouse and jeans she had slowly, cautiously removed from her body were only strips of what had once been. Obvious claw and fang marks marred her skin, the skin which Louis had so delicately caressed so as to find her triggering areas and protect them. Louis could see the blood trickling from her neck, her shoulders, her stomach, her wrists, and her thighs soaking into the silk of her blouse, her panties. But what troubled Louis the most, was the look in her eyes. Grace seemed hollow, her eyes staring off into space, completely unfazed by his presence. It was as if she was completely bewitched; no longer in control of her own body or mind.
Louis paused at the foot of Robert’s satirical throne. He didn’t need to speak, because Robert was already standing to greet him.
“Duke Louis Howard,” he said, arms sweeping. “What an honor to entertain you in my palace.”
Louis hummed. “Quite a palace, you have.”
“Well,” Robert chuckled, hands slapping his sides as they fell. “It’s not quite what I hoped for, but it’s only temporary. I am a man with a vision, you know.” Louis did not reply, merely glared at him coolly, eyes flitting back and forth to Grace.
Robert didn’t wait for Louis to speak, anyway. “See, I have a grand vision, my friend: to no longer live like this,” he said, punctuating his words with a harsh sweep of his left arm, “but to live like you once did!”
Louis only narrowed his eyes.
“I just couldn't put my finger on it, though; the reason you were able to control the humans so many years ago. Back in the day, when you had grand palaces and submissive peasants to run your kingdoms. Then it hit me!” Robert said, standing taller, “Fear! I needed the humans to fear us again, and in order for them to cower before us, they needed to know what we are capable of.” Robert snickered, sucking on his teeth. “I’ve already started some demonstrations- not sure if you’ve seen our handiwork, but I heard it made the front-page papers!” His voice rose, proudly, and earned a few hollers and claps from the men surrounding him. “Now sure, I know what you’re thinking,” Robert said, raising his hands, “How could someone who lives like this, possibly pull off a coup of a whole city?” He chuckled to himself, beginning a thoughtful pace. “I first started with making some friends- you know, turning some lucky folks into vamps- to get a little following. It’s so easy to give people power when they crave it. And vampire venom is like instant gratification.”
“A poison, you mean,” Louis finally shot, “and a curse.”
“Woah,” Robert said, sarcastically. “I figured you’d be a little cynical, but damn. You’ve been living in a cave too long, my friend. Don’t you remember what it was like to be a king, a god among men?”
Louis scoffed, folding his arms. “You know nothing of the past, you child.”
Robert lifted a brow, smirking as he sat back in his rickety throne. “But you do,” he snickered. His hand reached over, running his fingers gently through Grace’s hair. Her pupils dilated, and she almost purred as she clung to his thigh. Robert continued petting her, his eyes playful as he leaned toward Louis. “Imagine, you would no longer have to hide in the sewers like filth. You could have any home as your own. All the riches you wanted, the blood,” he pressed his lips to the top of Grace’s head, “the women…”
Louis twitched as Grace tilted her head upward, and let Robert consume her mouth in a carnal kiss. When he pulled away, Louis could see the fresh blood dripping from her lips.
Robert’s tongue swirled about, and he moaned. “God, she tastes so good, so fresh.” He chuckled, and wiped his mouth with his hand. “I’m sure you knew that though.”
Louis hissed, his fists clenching. He ignored Robert’s taunts. “What is it about any of those things that makes you believe I would succumb to worldly pleasures? I have done my time, boy- spent centuries in castles, in glittering palaces surrounded by treasures from every inch of the known world. I have slain villages only to sate my hunger.” Louis walked forward, daring to meet Robert on his pedestal. “I have fucked my way through the west and back to the east, and none of it pleased me. I am offended that you believe I could be so easily tempted, like one of your fledglings. You are all so weak.”
“Then show us how to be strong!” Robert pleaded, still holding onto Grace. “Teach us how to act like royals! We can restore our kind to their former thrones, the place we were meant to be! We should rule these humans like the food they are, not the other way around!”
“You are a child,” Louis repeated, his lip twisting in disgust, “a brat who believes his curse makes him worthy of the world. You are unfit to even govern this coven, let alone a nation. I will never help you, boy.”
Robert stared at Louis, their eyes at the same level, glaring with a hazy reddish glow. Then, Robert laughed, catching Louis off guard. “You’re right.” Robert yanked on Grace’s shoulders, so that she stood dazedly in his hold. “I knew you wouldn’t be easily persuaded, but I figured I’d give it a shot. Anyway, this is reallywhat I’m bartering with.”
Louis watched carefully as Robert leaned down to Grace’s ear. He tucked back a strand of brassy hair, and brushed his lips over the shell, breathing a string of words that even Louis couldn’t hear. Grace’s eyes focused, snapping clear, and she began to shake.
“Louis,” she said, her voice thin and confused. “Why are you here? G-get out of here!”
“Grace,” Louis reached forward almost instinctively, just as she fell toward him.
She screamed as Robert yanked her back into his hold, his hand tightly wrapped around her neck. “There she is, welcome back sweetheart!”
Grace squealed, shaking her head. “Lou-ouis, don't liste-en.”
“Here is the real deal, Louis,” Robert said evenly. “If you join my cause, you’ll not only be helping your kind, but your girl.”
Louis sneered, watching Grace writhe. He stepped forward, ready to lunge, but Robert shifted his hold.
His hands resting on each side of her face, he said, “You move, I snap her neck.”
Louis froze. He hissed angrily, fangs growing and eyes burning red. Robert finally had the upper hand, and they both knew it.
“That’s right, good boy,” he said, watching Louis slink back.
Louis released a carnal hiss from his throat, barely controlling his anger. “And if I say no? What then, boy?”
“Well,” Robert said, not letting go of Grace’s head, “let’s look at our options. One, you say yes. We live like kings, you get the harlot as your own and I never touch her again. Two, you say no, and I snap her neck right here in front of you before I let my children tear you apart.”
“Those are the only options, then,” Louis spat. “What a hard decision for me.”
“Actually,” Robert said, loosening his hold on Grace, his hands slipping over her shoulders, “there is one more option.”
Grace tensed under his ministrations, and shook her head. “I won’t…”
“Now come on, baby,” Robert said, kissing her cheek. “Won’t you sing for Louis?”
Grace shook her head, angry tears welling in her eyes. “I can’t…”
Robert’s grip tightened. “Do it just like you did this evening, babe. Besides, I’m sure that’s how you got him in the sack to begin with. You reeked of him when you came back to me.”
“What are you talking about,” Louis seethed.
Robert laughed, looking genuinely shocked. “Wait, you didn’t know?” Then, he bent over, clutching his gut with one hand and yanking on Grace’s hair with the other. “Oh yeah! Grace here is what we call a siren,” he chuckled, slapping her hip. “She can make anybody fall for her. Why do you think it was so easy for her to sleep around with all those people? The ones she fucked so she could hide from me, you included? She can make anybody want her with just a touch.”
“No!” Grace struggled in Robert’s hold. “I didn’t do that to you, Louis! Please, believe me…”
“It’s also how I was able to get into that cave you call a living space earlier tonight,” Robert said, amused as how easily his plan fell into place. “Her little trick also works great for keeping people quiet and still- did you sleep extra heavy tonight, Louis?”
“Stop!” Grace cried. “I didn’t want to! He was going to kill you!”
Louis stepped back, his eyes narrowed. “Is that true?”
“Yes!” She said, her heart breaking at the word. She crumpled to her knees, Robert finally letting her go. “Yes, it’s true that I have that power… but please, Louis, I did not use it on you, not those times before.”
Louis stared at the girl falling before him, begging and pleading with every tear, but he felt his heart grow heavy and cold in his chest. It all made sense: why her scent was so specifically perfect to his interests, why he was drawn to her without knowing why. That first night she stayed with him, when he felt the heat rush over him in a wave of uncontrolled lust, and the unfamiliar glow in her eyes as she touched his hand. “You tricked me.”
“I would never,” Grace buried herself in her hands, sobbing. “Please, Louis. I couldn’t do that to you. I even tried once, but I couldn’t… I wanted more from you, I…”
Robert giggled from his makeshift throne. “Aw, sweetheart. Did you actually think he could love a used-up slut like you?” He laughed, and the others around him joined in.
Louis watched Grace’s face as it fell, her hair masking her shame. But from behind her veil, Louis could see trickles of blood fall down her arm. He leaned down to her, and brushed the hair away from her shoulder. There it was, the newest gash marring the rumpled skin on her neck. Louis could see her future in that moment, the entirety of her body open and bleeding, like a drinking fountain for the lowest of Robert’s minions. He tilted her chin up to him, her dark eyes unfocused and hurting. And on her lips, the tiniest tremble as she mumbled, “I never… I didn’t… not you…”
Louis’ fist clenched. He thought back to all the times he wanted her when she didn’t know it. When he first hunted her, entranced by her scent. When she trembled against him in hiding from the monster that clutched her now. When she leaned toward him at the bar, that first time she confessed it all to him. When he trapped her against a wall after he had caught her stalking him. When she let him see her scars. When she woke up the first time in his bed. When she looked up at him with those big, doe eyes, and refused to touch him first. When she asked him to kiss her, begging him to want her as much as she had wanted him. There was never a time in any of those moments where she was in control, where she put him under a spell of her own doing. Those were moments where she silently slipped into his brain, haunting his dreams until he was consumed by her, bit by bit. She may have been a siren, but Louis was never hypnotized into taking her. She asked. For all his heartbreak and pain, for once, Louis trusted another’s words. “I believe you,” he breathed.
Her shivering stopped. Grace glanced up, seeing his eyes clearly from under her tears. “Louis?”
“No matter what happens,” he whispered, reaching up to thumb away her tears, “know that I forgive you for what you’re about to do. I hope you’ll forgive me, too.”
“Wh-what?” Grace shook her head.
“Sing,” he whispered quickly, before tossing her backward with a snarl. “Lying slut,” he mocked. “I knew I did not truly want you, it was all a trick!”
Grace seemed hurt for a moment, then in her confusion, she met his eyes, and understood. Her voice shook, but she played along. “I’m sorry, Louis. I just needed you for protection.”
Louis scoffed. “Well if you think you can hypnotize me again, then you are gravely mistaken.” He turned to leave, before he was stopped.
“Don’t let him move, boys,” Robert said, descending the stairs. “Grab him.”
Louis hissed as the five of Robert’s scum grabbed him from all sides, and pinned him on his knees. He tried his best to make it look like he was fighting their clutch, before letting them hold him down.
Robert smoothly slid up to Grace as she stood. “Now, Grace. Won’t you sing for Louis? I think it would calm him down.”
Grace nodded, and slinked forward to where Louis thrashed. She lowered herself to her knees to be at eye level with his. In a moment of hesitation, Louis met her eyes, and winked. Trying to hold back her smirk, Grace reached out and touched his cheek tenderly.
A rush of heat flooded Louis’ core just as Grace’s eyes blossomed into a golden light. His lips fell apart into a parched gasp, his mind foggy with an unprecedented lust. He stared at Grace, wanting to devour her entirely. He pictured her, splayed on her back, her shreds of clothing on the hard concrete as he sank his fangs into every part of her, all while fucking her tight body into oblivion. His hands flew away from the hold of his captors, and he grabbed her body, kissing her fiercely with everyone standing around them. In the distance, he could hear Robert laughing, content that his plan had worked. It was then that the heat subsided, and his hazy mind cleared. Still, Grace pulled him tight, and Louis continued the kiss to appear still under her spell.
“Come on, Louis,” Robert teased, sitting back on his throne. “Go ahead and fuck her. We’d all love to watch. Wouldn’t be the first time.”
The laughter that roiled around him made Louis pause. As he pulled back from Grace’s lips, his eyes flared into a bright, murderous red. “Go fuck yourself,” he said clearly, pulling Grace into his arms to stare directly into Robert’s eyes.
All laughter died away as Louis stood and punched through the nearest fledgling’s ribcage. With a gurgling scream, he turned to ash around Louis’ fist. The other four were on him and Grace in an instant, but Louis made quick work of them. He took two younglings by their heads, smashing them into one another to watch them disintegrate onto the floor. The other two went for Grace, who was still kneeling on the ground. Louis grabbed one by his arm, swinging him upwards until he came crashing to the ground on his head. Louis heard crackle of his neck before he became dust. The last vampire hissed at Louis as he held Grace by the throat. But her hand rested gently on his, and as her eyes began to glow, his face fell lax and his eyes lulled about in a rush of ecstasy. In the moment of distraction, Louis pushed him away from Grace and let him topple to the floor, just before Louis crushed his heart with his foot. As the last fledgling disintegrated in ash, Louis wasted no time in grabbing Grace and yanking her away to run to the main doors.
Of course, no escape could have been so easy. Robert was in front of them both in a flash. Louis was quick to push Grace behind him. “Touch her and I rip your head from your shoulders,” Louis seethed.
“Clever. I underestimated both of you.” Robert chuckled, blocking the archway. “You’re clearly much stronger than you let on, ancient. We could really use someone like you in our court.”
“I have no intention of entertaining your petty dreams, boy,” Louis mocked. “Now. Move.”
“Fine, but Grace isn’t going anywhere,” he said, arms folding.
“Wrong again,” Louis said, backing away to pull Grace closer to his back.
“Grace,” Robert said, peering over Louis’ shoulder. “Come back to me.”
Grace shivered against Louis. “N-no… I don’t want to, Louis…”
“Grace,” Robert repeated, his tone more commanding, surging with energy. “Come here. Now.”
“Do not listen to him, Grace,” Louis implored. “You are stronger now, remember that.”
“Come home, sweetheart,” Robert said, his voice syrupy, hypnotic energy pulsing toward them, and Grace relaxed.
Louis grabbed ahold of her arm as she began to step away from him. He turned Grace toward him, and his heart sank as he watched the haze fall over her irises again. She was back under her master’s control. “No, Grace,” Louis implored, cupping her cheeks. “Do not go back to this monster.”
Robert shrugged. “Sorry, Louis. The lady is making her choice. You’ll never be what I am to her. I’ll always be her master. There’s nothing you can do.” Robert reached out his hand, almost politely, and beckoned for Grace to take it.
Grace’s hand lifted, just the smallest fraction, and Louis’ heart burst. He leaned in, lips brushing her cheek, and breathed, “But I love you, Grace.”
Gasping, Grace recoiled her hand, and fell back into Louis’ arms. She stared at him, eyes bright and shimmering, the faintest smile on her lips. “You do?”
Louis opened his mouth with a smile, but Robert’s roar made him push Grace away. “You bitch!” Robert cried angrily, his claws reeling back to strike at her.
Louis grabbed him by the throat, stopping his attack. “Grace, run! Get outside!”
“Louis! It’s almost sunrise-”
“GO!” Louis cried, tossing Robert back against the wall, sending bits of cinderblock to the hard concrete.
Grace ran as fast as she could, and when she was outside of the church, Louis crackled his neck. “Now, to get rid of you, boy.”
Robert sputtered a laugh, standing as he spat a wad of blood onto the ground. “You throw a good punch, but I doubt you can beat me and my army.”
Louis snickered, circling the other man as Robert began to pace. “Your army of newborns is hardly strong enough to defeat an ancient like me. I destroyed five of them without a breath, before your very eyes. I could go through a hundred similarly. And then all I have to face is you.”
“That’s true,” Robert said, backing away. “You could beat me pretty easily like this, hand to hand. Thankfully for me,” Robert smirked, “I am very prepared.”
The walls began to tremble, and for the first time, Louis was unsure of his odds as he felt the ghostly energy fill the space. Out of shadowy cracks and holes hid by pillars, creatures which Louis had never seen crawled along the woodwork. They looked humanoid, but their flesh was rotten and green. The stench that filled the room along with their whoops and howls made Louis’ skin crawl. He staggered back, eyes wide with fear. “What in God’s name…”
“More like the devil, actually,” Robert sneered, walking backward. “These are my children, Louis. Once dead- now mine to control.”
“You,” Louis stumbled as they began to drop from the ceiling, wielding weapons in their hands, from knives, to clubs, to wooden stakes. “You reanimated corpses?”
“Pretty clever, if I do say so myself,” Robert chuckled over the roar of the undead. “Takes a bit of work, and a lot of trying, but with the right freshly-dead corpse and the perfect amount of venom, they make the perfect slaves. Not so great if you want company, but for getting rid of pests like you,” Robert said, sitting back on his throne, “well, they do the trick.”
Louis knew his odds were definitely not in his favor by now. He had no idea how to defeat such creatures. He turned to run, but was met with a pair of corpses that made him want to vomit. Two young boys, their hands joined, shuffled toward him, stakes in each of their free hands. They gurgled and choked, their necks partially missing. The sight was enough to make him sick, but his fear kept him focused. Louis tried to shove past them, but another pair of hands grabbed him around the shoulders and pushed him to the ground. A woman- or what was once a woman- tried to pin him down, but he was easily able to shove her backward. The things were weak, at least, but their numbers alone were overwhelming. They crowded over top of him like a horde of ants, clawing at his limbs and face. Louis wildly punched at the crowd, but as he sent one flying back, two more took his place.
Then, he felt the stabbing. Louis cried out in pain as he took a pocket knife out of his thigh. The blood dripped for a moment, but his wound easily healed. But as he removed one weapon, another object stabbed his neck. Then another, in his chest. In a fit of rage, Louis tried shoving through the mass, not caring that he was stepping on bodies to get to the door. He continued taking hits, his face scratched, his legs wounded, and his chest still bleeding. Whatever had hit him there, it was dangerously close to his heart. He had to escape. Finally, shoving past the final corpse, he burst through the door. The bodies started to follow after him, but now that he could run freely, Louis bolted down the steps.
“Louis!” Grace cried out for him from her hiding place behind the stairwell. “What happened?”
“Just run!” Louis grabbed her hand, and together they bolted from the hellhole of Robert’s coven.
Grace peered over her shoulders to see the crowd following them. “Wh-who are they?”
“Just. Run.” Louis punctuated again. This time, Grace didn’t argue. They sprinted as fast as they could, Grace propping Louis up with her shoulder. Only when it was clear that the corpses were no longer after them, did they rest in an alley. Louis slumped against the ground, hissing as he clutched his still bleeding chest.
The sky started to lighten, the first sign of dawn. “L-Louis,” Grace said, genuine fear in her voice. “The sunrise! We aren’t going to make it to your place in time!”
Louis looked around them, noting the street name. He chuckled bitterly. They weren’t close to his place, but they weren’t far from another address he was recently made aware of. “I know somewhere near here where we can hide for the day. Some… old friends.”

Myths of the Brain
Tumblr media
                                                                                             1. We use only 10 percent of our brains.                This one sounds so compelling - a precise number, repeated in pop culture for a century, implying that we have huge reserves of untapped mental powers. But the supposedly unused 90 percent of the brain is not some vestigial appendix. Brains are expensive - it takes a lot of energy to build brains during fetal and childhood development and maintain them in adults. Evolutionarily, it would make no sense to carry around surplus brain tissue. Experiments using PET or fMRI scans show that much of the brain is engaged even during simple tasks, and injury to even a small bit of brain can have profound consequences for language, sensory perception, movement or emotion.          True, we have some brain reserves. Autopsy studies show that many people have physical signs of Alzheimer's disease (such as amyloid plaques among neurons) in their brains even though they were not impaired. Apparently we can lose some brain tissue and still function pretty well. And people score higher on IQ tests if they're highly motivated, suggesting that we don't always exercise our minds at 100 percent capacity.

   2. "Flashbulb memories" are precise, detailed and persistent.          We all have memories that feel as vivid and accurate as a snapshot, usually of some shocking, dramatic event - the assassination of President Kennedy, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the attacks of September 11, 2001. People remember exactly where they were, what they were doing, who they were with, what they saw or heard. But several clever experiments have tested people's memory immediately after a tragedy and again several months or years later.
The test subjects tend to be confident that their memories are accurate and say the flashbulb memories are more vivid than other memories. Vivid they may be, but the memories decay over time just as other memories do. People forget important details and add incorrect ones, with no awareness that they're recreating a muddled scene in their minds rather than calling up a perfect, photographic reproduction.
Tumblr media
                3. It's all downhill after 40 (or 50 or 60 or 70).          It's true, some cognitive skills do decline as you get older. Children are better at learning new languages than adults - and never play a game of concentration against a 10-year-old unless you're prepared to be humiliated. Young adults are faster than older adults to judge whether two objects are the same or different; they can more easily memorize a list of random words, and they are faster to count backward by sevens.          But plenty of mental skills improve with age. Vocabulary, for instance - older people know more words and understand subtle linguistic distinctions. Given a biographical sketch of a stranger, they're better judges of character. They score higher on tests of social wisdom, such as how to settle a conflict. And people get better and better over time at regulating their own emotions and finding meaning in their lives.
Tumblr media
   4. We have five senses.          Sure, sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch are the big ones. But we have many other ways of sensing the world and our place in it. Proprioception is a sense of how our bodies are positioned. Nociception is a sense of pain. We also have a sense of balance - the inner ear is to this sense as the eye is to vision - as well as a sense of body temperature, acceleration and the passage of time.          Compared with other species, though, humans are missing out. Bats and dolphins use sonar to find prey; some birds and insects see ultraviolet light; snakes detect the heat of warmblooded prey; rats, cats, seals and other whiskered creatures use their "vibrissae" to judge spatial relations or detect movements; sharks sense electrical fields in the water; birds, turtles and even bacteria orient to the earth's magnetic field lines.          By the way, have you seen the taste map of the tongue, the diagram showing that different regions are sensitive to salty, sweet, sour or bitter flavors? Also a myth.
Tumblr media
   5. Brains are like computers.          We speak of the brain's processing speed, its storage capacity, its parallel circuits, inputs and outputs. The metaphor fails at pretty much every level: the brain doesn't have a set memory capacity that is waiting to be filled up; it doesn't perform computations in the way a computer does; and even basic visual perception isn't a passive receiving of inputs because we actively interpret, anticipate and pay attention to different elements of the visual world.          There's a long history of likening the brain to whatever technology is the most advanced, impressive and vaguely mysterious. Descartes compared the brain to a hydraulic machine. Freud likened emotions to pressure building up in a steam engine. The brain later resembled a telephone switchboard and then an electrical circuit before evolving into a computer; lately it's turning into a Web browser or the Internet. These metaphors linger in clichés: emotions put the brain "under pressure" and some behaviors are thought to be "hard-wired." Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
   6. The brain is hard-wired.          This is one of the most enduring legacies of the old "brains are electrical circuits" metaphor. There's some truth to it, as with many metaphors: the brain is organized in a standard way, with certain bits specialized to take on certain tasks, and those bits are connected along predictable neural pathways (sort of like wires) and communicate in part by releasing ions (pulses of electricity).          But one of the biggest discoveries in neuroscience in the past few decades is that the brain is remarkably plastic. In blind people, parts of the brain that normally process sight are instead devoted to hearing. Someone practicing a new skill, like learning to play the violin, "rewires" parts of the brain that are responsible for fine motor control. People with brain injuries can recruit other parts of the brain to compensate for the lost tissue.
Tumblr media
               7. A conk on the head can cause amnesia.                Next to babies switched at birth, this is a favorite trope of soap operas: Someone is in a tragic accident and wakes up in the hospital unable to recognize loved ones or remember his or her own name or history. (The only cure for this form of amnesia, of course, is another conk on the head.)          In the real world, there are two main forms of amnesia: anterograde (the inability to form new memories) and retrograde (the inability to recall past events).        Science's most famous amnesia patient, H.M., was unable to remember anything that happened after a 1953 surgery that removed most of his hippocampus. He remembered earlier events, however, and was able to learn new skills and vocabulary, showing that encoding "episodic" memories of new experiences relies on different brain regions than other types of learning and memory do. Retrograde amnesia can be caused by Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury (ask an NFL player), thiamine deficiency or other insults. But a brain injury doesn't selectively impair autobiographical memory - much less bring it back.
Tumblr media
8. We know what will make us happy.                In some cases we haven't a clue. We routinely overestimate how happy something will make us, whether it's a birthday, free pizza, a new car, a victory for our favorite sports team or political candidate, winning the lottery or raising children. Money does make people happier, but only to a point - poor people are less happy than the middle class, but the middle class are just as happy as the rich. We overestimate the pleasures of solitude and leisure and underestimate how much happiness we get from social relationships.          On the flip side, the things we dread don't make us as unhappy as expected. Monday mornings aren't as unpleasant as people predict. Seemingly unendurable tragedies - paralysis, the death of a loved one - cause grief and despair, but the unhappiness doesn't last as long as people think it will. People are remarkably resilient.
Tumblr media
   9. We see the world as it is.          We are not passive recipients of external information that enters our brain through our sensory organs. Instead, we actively search for patterns (like a Dalmatian dog that suddenly appears in a field of black and white dots), turn ambiguous scenes into ones that fit our expectations (it's a vase; it's a face) and completely miss details we aren't expecting. In one famous psychology experiment, about half of all viewers told to count the number of times a group of people pass a basketball do not notice that a guy in a gorilla suit is hulking around among the ball-throwers.                We have a limited ability to pay attention (which is why talking on a cellphone while driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving), and plenty of biases about what we expect or want to see. Our perception of the world isn't just "bottom-up" - built of objective observations layered together in a logical way. It's "top-down," driven by expectations and interpretations.
Tumblr media
   10. Men are from Mars, women are from Venus.          Some of the sloppiest, shoddiest, most biased, least reproducible, worst designed and most overinterpreted research in the history of science purports to provide biological explanations for differences between men and women. Eminent neuroscientists once claimed that head size, spinal ganglia or brain stem structures were responsible for women's inability to think creatively, vote logically or practice medicine. Today the theories are a bit more sophisticated: men supposedly have more specialized brain hemispheres, women more elaborate emotion circuits. Though there are some differences (minor and uncorrelated with any particular ability) between male and female brains, the main problem with looking for correlations with behavior is that sex differences in cognition are massively exaggerated.          Women are thought to outperform men on tests of empathy. They do - unless test subjects are told that men are particularly good at the test, in which case men perform as well as or better than women. The same pattern holds in reverse for tests of spatial reasoning. Whenever stereotypes are brought to mind, even by something as simple as asking test subjects to check a box next to their gender, sex differences are exaggerated. Women college students told that a test is something women usually do poorly on, do poorly. Women college students told that a test is something college students usually do well on, do well. Across countries - and across time - the more prevalent the belief is that men are better than women in math, the greater the difference in girls' and boys' math scores. And that's not because girls in Iceland have more specialized brain hemispheres than do girls in Italy.          Certain sex differences are enormously important to us when we're looking for a mate, but when it comes to most of what our brains do most of the time - perceive the world, direct attention, learn new skills, encode memories, communicate (no, women don't speak more than men do), judge other people's emotions (no, men aren't inept at this) - men and women have almost entirely overlapping and fully Earth-bound abilities.

We've got it good here
For the @solarpunkstoryexchange Prompt: solarpunk in SPACE (in space colonies, in deep space)
Author notes: I got really excited about the prompt, but fell a bit short due to not being able to work out a plot or time to write. Because of these reasons, this has been mostly left on the brainstorming stage - It starts with a bit of a story and changes into brainstorming bullet points, which span about 3 generations (or more) of people living in the place. I hope you enjoy reading it!
A couple wants a kid. Or, to be more precise, a lesbian couple on the Mars colony decides they want to try getting a kid. Their friends and local colleagues agree to the plan. The Mars colony is a close-knit community, and they collectively decide that they will love and support the kid, whatever they are like. Whether they are rowdy or quiet. Whether they’re scientific or artistic. Whatever gender they are. Whether they're disabled or not.
The earth control doesn't like the idea, but they can't control what the Martians do, only do their best to adapt and help.
The first try- no. Second - another loss. Every pregnancy is keeping the whole Mars base at their toes. Constant checkups. Mental wellbeing regulated as well as physical health. The possibly pregnant woman is given less intense work and sports. She isn't allowed out of the areas with best radiation screening. She does still work, she has to, but she also spends a lot of time studying various things. Stuff about pregnancy, about children, but also music and literature and other kinds of arts. About all kinds of problems that may arise, but also about how to best take care of a child in general.
Her wife does a lot of studying, too, just as everyone else on the base. But she also takes the extra time to be with her pregnant partner. In all honesty, so does everyone. In some way, the child will be all of theirs. While in some way, they will be a child of all of humanity.
When the pregnancy doesn't end near the beginning, and then continues well for months, they are hopeful. And when a baby is born, after several years of trying, the Mars base celebrates. And far away, people on Earth celebrate the first human born off-planet.
As a small kid, the Mars-born child is unaware of their celebrity status on Earth. They will learn what it means, but not yet.
Brainstorming:
"what do you mean i can’t have a hydroponics in my room"
Mars!!
Planting plantsies; Bacterial protein; Critters?
"Is this something I can plant in? What if I add compost?" "Hey can we do smth of this plastic? Melt it? Sun? New packages?" Wind power in Mars?
"Uh-huh wanna be the dad of my kid?" "I'm gay" "It is dangerous™ but I want a kid let’s do it" "Ur their dad but also godfather"
Aka a lesbian couple and a gay guy decide to get kids. The kid lives with lesbians but dad is integrated in life and lives in the neighbourhood
How is it solarpunk? Do they decide to do it or something else despite being prohibited?
Closed loop system
Growing culturally significant stuff even though it’s inefficient - Doing, too
Everything that can be recycled, is recycled
Outside soil made usable via mixing with compost and growing stuff that can extract nutritients from it
3d printing
What plot? Everyday life plot?
Is there a lot of scarcity?
Do they have their own internet places? Earth internet connection, but slow? Friends at earth or other space colonies???
What if someone wants to move there? Exchange student? Could someone from earth be?
Friend with the aforementioned Mars-born kid? A science enthusiast - space kid more of an art person
Jump jump!! Very popular and also healthy. Climbing too!
Exchange students bring lots of Earth stuff with them. Some personal items, but mostly small things. For all, some spices not grown on mars, and other stuff they may need/ want / have requested.
Exchange students/new residents, how many? Five or ten? An nb person too!
Had lots of stuff to digitally read when on long travel. Travel is tiring and they ate mostly packed food bc it’s easy in zero-gravity (but also fresh vegetables that grow fast, and stuff grown in poo made compost - or is it just collected for use in mars? Probs. Other grown veggies)
Getting to know each other on the flight, also gotten to know each other on the before-launch stuff. One had to drop out at the last minute due to health problems :(
When on mars: “whoa there’s gravity!! How do I get used to this again??”
People of different professions. Some doctor, some scientist, some engineer, some person person like psychologist or smth
People exercise but also do crafts. Lots of 3d-printed stuff. Games!! Also on space flight! Full body sport games! Brain games! Very regular favorite games!
Lots of lag on online stuff though :( But lesser quality = ok and faster
Gardeners!!
So much focus on learning. And everyone got to do something, whatever they can. Even if they’d rather do art? Are ppl forced to exercise? Ableism what? How much is there of it?
Growing lights and lamps. Some, in living areas, syntethise daylight and night, some, in agricultural areas, are continuously on
Mostly plants that are small but wield lots of fast food, but some less fast food for special treats (like fruits from small pruned “bonsai trees")
A large open hall for sports, including stuff like soccer, tennis, and various team sports
At first the place is very small. It grows. The amount of ppl grows from less than 10 to more than 30. When the exchange students come, more than 50 - maybe around 70?
Someone rich gets there with their money? But is made to learn to do work and use the money not for themself but for the community. Is taught social and coworking skills etc.
Most people: problem? Research!
Several do digital art to some degree - or blog! Blog a lot. Or tweet or such. Videos! Of what life on Mars is like. Everyone must be aware that the public is interested.
Most time is spent in public areas. Work is often done in small groups. All specialised in something, but can do basics in everything.
Solar panels! Lots! On top of where the hub is underground.
Marswalks done rarely, and remote-controlled robots are used a lot. Robo bees! Roombas! Farming robots!
“Exchange students" the first few with not much previous experience. A bit less that 200 into tests, then maybe a hundred into further ed and evaluation, then a few dozen into training. Finally, about 10 best chosen. This way, younger people. Around 25 to 30 when to Mars. With a few more qualified people.
Biologists manage gardens. Engineers manage repairing and building new and 3d-printers.  Doctors manage health. Chemists manage various stuff. Earth can always tell info and such when needed.
Downloaded books, online searches and videos though slow-ish to load. Calls and video conferences. New clothes from hemp grown on Mars!
Induction stove. Lots of food made by once. Stable food: beans? Sugar from where? GMO is used a lot. Sugar beets? Lots of new seeds brought every time something arrives - about every 2.5 years or longer. Good thing: no/few pests. Not many animals, possibly rats?
Most walls filled with stuff, esp. in older areas. Everyone owns not too many clothes. Maybe up to 5 outfits. Every time stuff is brought, they can wish for some. Not much though. A lot is 3d-printed on-site. Few personal belongings - most is co-owned. Works when there are few people and everyone knows everyone.
Baby gets clothes, most made of stuff grown on mars. Cutting made so it doesn’t trash fabric. Clothes are mended because making new takes a lot of resources. Kids’ clothes made a few sizes too big or so they can be easily expanded when they grow.
When exchange students come, there are a few kids. Maybe 3 who were born on Mars.
Kids are familiarized with work on Mars. Curriculum specialised for life on Mars. Made in unison with teaching experts on earth. No rigid school days, but a lot of learning. To work with the adults, though with an extra person to make sure they don’t mess things up.
A lot is automated. Taking care of the automated stuff is important.
Kids are not let into older parts. There are lots of things they may accidentally pull, and worse radiation filtering. They have some toys, 3d-printed. A few plushies, part or mostly made of extra fabric scraps
Space travel done in sleeping bags, they keep them when they come to mars.
Phones/laptops/equivalent for all. VR for games and learning! AR glasses?
Jewelry? Someone likes making it. Clothes, too - and customising! Recipes have to be fitted for Mars. Some people love trying them out.
Kid has a bit bad eyesight.
Main languages English & Russian
When did ppl first decide to *stay*? And not just spend a few weeks/months/years? “Hello we're looking for people willing to live on Mars" or “Hello we’re not leaving" ?
Mars colony grows. Also “Hey we’ve lived here for ages and I like my home planet I want to be independent"
There have been a few generations. Maybe this is the third gen. Someone child of one of the first marsborns. Is older - in 20s or 30s or smth
There is a growing community. Mostly scientists. But maybe a few other professions there too
Someone gets to make food! Communal eating almost daily or more - lunch or dinner? Dinner probably. Lunch often in work groups
Cultural feasts and celebrations are shared if applicable. Seasonings are valuable
Lots is made in laboratory. Even food like meat, but mostly medications etc.
People have to do some work and learn new stuff as long as they can. However most get significant osteoporosis when older. Eyesight loss is another difficulty, but there is an optical station that can make glasses. Things also start being adjusted for use with reduced eyesight.
Should it be somewhere else than Mars?
Over the years, parts of the base are adjusted to become as natural as possible, introducing new species into their ecosystem. Main agricultural areas are kept hydroponics, and some get turned into aquaponics systems (=includes fish, which also can occasionally be used as food)
Settlement at around equator or at middle to pole, on a flat area
Room- or apartment-like parts connected to each other by hallways. Old parts and newer parts. 1 floor and sometimes 2 OR MORE!!Like a department store!! Especially some housing areas. Or like a cruise ship with a “promenade" and rooms with windows there? Elevators?
Climbing is loved and easy because of the lower gravity, but it needs to be made safe because breaking a bone is very not good.

Connect GoPro to PC/Mac using GoPro Quik for Desktop. To connect GoPro camera to PC/Mac for photos and videos transferring, actually GoPro has its own software. That’s GoPro Quik. The free software is installed in the same way you install any app on the Mac - download the file and double-click to begin the installation process. The first step is to download and set up the Quick GoPro app; Then, use a USB to connect the GoPro camera to your Mac; Start the Quik App, and you come across the “import files” option. You can then import the photos using the app to your computer. NB: If you happen to experience the GoPro not connecting problem, then repeat the above steps. Download files from gopro to mac. Upload with SD Card Reader (Fastest Method) This is my favorite method because it is the fastest. From there you can drag & drop the files from your SD card to your computer. Method #3 - Automatically with Image Capture. Image Capture allows you to: Import files to a location of your choice; Delete files; View files before importing; Select the file(s) you want to Import and select Import, or Import All if you want to import everything. Use and SD card reader, it's the fastest way to do it and it gives you full access to your SD card. Trying to hook the camera up with a USB cable can be problematic, up to 50% slower and only gives you access to video and photo files, no lrv or thm files.

Meet the Indian Software Engineer Who Quit His Job to Climb Mount Everest – But Not How You’d Imagine!
“If a 110 kg Gujarati guy, living a sedentary life, with no background in endurance training or mountain climbing, can transform his life and climb to the top of Mount Everest, nothing is impossible.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
I first saw a photo of Kuntal back in 2017. There he stood, proud, buff and haggard, on Island Peak in the Everest region in Nepal, holding a Facebook-style plaque that caught my eye.
Tumblr media
I had turned vegan just a couple of years before that, and was still fielding questions on where I get my protein and calcium from. And here was Kuntal, once your average Indian software engineer – standing atop the planet’s highest and one of its most formidable mountains. The first person to climb Everest on an entirely vegan diet.
I finally met Kuntal at a cafe in Mumbai, as he delivered an awe-inspiring talk to an adventure-hungry, protein-curious audience. Despite his feat, Kuntal humbly confessed that he couldn’t be called the first vegan to climb Everest, because he wore a down jacket as he climbed, stuffed with duck feathers (sometimes plucked live off animals and often involving abuse; fallen and collected feathers are just not enough to supply the industry).
So two years later, in 2019, Kuntal climbed Everest again – this time not only on a vegan diet, but also in cruelty-free gear. No down, no wool. His winter jacket was specially crafted by Save the Duck using synthetic and recycled plastic!
Follow Kuntal’s travel adventures on his blog, and connect with him on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Watch this inspiring video about his journey:

The journey from software engineering to mountain climbing
“Until a decade ago, if you told me I would leave my job and become a mountain climber, I would have thought you’ve gone crazy!” ~ Kuntal Joisher
Kuntal recalls himself as a happy-go-lucky software engineer, busy with the 9-to-5 rat race. No one in his family had ever climbed mountains, nor did he feel any such inclination. Then a trip to Himachal Pradesh in North India changed everything.
After a long, picturesque drive on the Hindustan Tibet highway, his wife and he found themselves amidst snow for the first time. Kuntal vividly remembers that moment. He sat down and took in the breathtaking beauty around him. All the pondering over the past and worries about the future melted away. He felt every breath, every single heartbeat. For the first time in his life, he felt real, deep happiness. In that moment, he decided he’d do anything to chase that state of mind.

On funding his travel expeditions without a full-time job
Perhaps like every outdoor enthusiast, Kuntal dreamt of climbing Mount Everest someday. But unlike many, he worked relentlessly towards achieving this dream. He tried to quit, but his software company offered him a flexible work arrangement instead. When he finally left, he decided to take on only part-time opportunities which would allow him plenty of time to train. Every year since 2010, he spent 3-4 months training in the Himalayas. The remaining months were split between work and high intensity training in Mumbai. To support his dream, his wife and family made a conscious decision to scale back on their lifestyle too.

An ethical vegan with a mountain to climb
“Climbing Everest was a personal and spiritual journey. It was also a chance to prove that a vegan diet does not lack nutrition and can support the most difficult physical endurance endeavor on the planet.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
Kuntal turned vegan back in 2002, just after he moved to California to pursue a masters degree in Computer Science. Along with shedding many of his preconceived notions, he learnt about the suffering, abuse and death caused by our choice to consume animal products like meat and cheese.
When Kuntal dreamt of climbing Everest as a vegan, his decision was met by much skepticism. Quoting from the BBC, “research indicates that high altitude mountaineers can burn upwards of 6,000 calories per day in the mountains. With excessive stress on their bodies, mountaineers’ very survival depends on a diet that includes a variety of foods to provide sufficient carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to support them nutritionally during their expedition. A typical Everest-climber’s diet includes protein-rich foods such as eggs, yak cheese and canned tuna.”
Yet in 2016, Kuntal Joisher became the first person to successfully summit Mount Everest on an entirely vegan diet!

Climbing Everest on a plant-based diet
“Through my expeditions, I want to inspire more and more people to ask the vegan question. That’s my real Everest.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
Kuntal’s training for scaling Everest included both, high intensity workouts and treks, climbs and mountain expeditions. His nutrition plan involved consuming a variety of plant-based whole foods that are low on fat and high on carbs – like fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains, dates, nuts and seeds. Moving towards a healthier vegan diet, Kuntal says his recovery time improved, and he could train harder and harder for the biggest climb of his life.
His successful Everest summit in 2016 brought with it international fame and recognition. His journey was featured on BBC News, The Washington Post and The Huffington Post, among others – and he certainly bust the myth that a vegan diet is nutritionally inferior to animal-based foods.

Mind over matter
“I go on long, hard treks without drinking or eating. Things can go wrong when climbing a mountain like Everest. I may get lost or run out of food and water. It’s smart to train for such situations.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
Kuntal believes that in mountain climbing, physical fitness is only 10% of the game. The other 90% is mental toughness. His cardio workouts usually include climbing 300 stairs up and down, running 20 odd kms and hiking for 18 hours straight. Then there’s strength, functional and high intensity interval training.
But his biggest weakness was homesickness. There were times when he gave up a climb halfway up a mountain, deciding to return home to be with his family. To acquire mental toughness, he started to detach himself. He would go on treks and rarely call home.
With time, he started training even harder, pushing his limits even further. In 2013, he climbed to the top of three 20,000 feet summits within a span of 2 months. And finally felt ready to take on Everest. During his build-up to the Everest climb, Kuntal remembers emotionally detaching himself from his family. But after accomplishing his dream summit in 2016, with Everest no longer in his life, Kuntal says he feels an ocean of emptiness inside him. He believes it was the price he had to pay to climb Everest.

On trekking solo and tips for newbies
“During my journey, I have learnt to respect the mountains and never underestimate them. Put in the time and effort to have the right mental and physical conditioning before venturing out in the wilderness alone. There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. There have been too many deaths this season in the Sahyadri and the Himalayas – and believe me, no mountain is worth dying for.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
One of the key components of Kuntal’s training regime was hiking in the Western Ghats near Mumbai. He has done more than 450 hikes in the last 8 years, many of them solo.
For people who ask for advice on trekking solo, Kuntal recommends not attempting it, unless you know the terrain like the back of your hand, and are fully prepared, physically and mentally. He always carries a medical kit, including an anti-venom vial and rope, to tackle unforeseen situations.

Overtourism and responsible travel on Mount Everest
“Climbing Everest, and climbing it safely and reliably without being a liability to anyone on the mountain requires three things: Super-human physical fitness, solid technical skills in mountaineering and an insane level of mental fitness.” ~ Kuntal Joisher
This year, shocking pictures of the “traffic jam” on Mount Everest did the rounds, showing how the tallest and toughest mountain in the world too, has fallen prey to overtourism. Even more shocking was the death of 11 people on the mountain this year – the deadliest in recent history.
Kuntal says it makes him sad, angry and frustrated that highly inexperienced and under-prepared climbers have begun attempting to climb this “bucket list” mountain. Putting not only their own lives at risk, but also those of the sherpas who must try to rescue them or their bodies. Developing the skills to climb a mountain like Everest requires years of relentless training, expeditions and mountaineering experience.

Advice for people who want to pursue their dreams against all odds
Kuntal: “I tried climbing Everest in 2014 and 2015. Both times, the climb was cancelled due to natural disasters. Several people dissuaded me from trying again, some even saying ‘the mountain doesn’t want you there’. But I didn’t believe that, finally summiting successfully in 2016, and then again in 2019. I knew I was mentally and physically ready.
I realized the importance of living fully in the present when I escaped sure death from an avalanche in 2015. That night, when I went to sleep, I saw my entire life play out in front of me. One thing hit me – if you have any dreams or passions, the best time to go after them is now. Not tomorrow, not the day after, not in 60 years when you have all the time and money saved. NOW.”

A lot of questions... my my, someone's curious lol
@black-satin-dancer tagged me, cheers dude :D
Rules: answer all the questions, add one of your own and tag as many people as there are questions …pshh please, let’s keep it realistic - I don’t even know that many people irl. (also didn’t feel obligated to answer the Dragon age/Mars effect questions, because I’ve never played it)
1. coke or pepsi?
Neither. I absolutely hate fizzy sweet drinks lol. The only thing I enjoy is kombucha and I’ve had ginger ale which I can tolerate. (btw did you know there’s something called bacon soda? I just found out and I’m absolutely horrified and disgusted. pls burn this knowledge out of my brain thank)
2. disney or dreamworks?
I don’t have a preference, nor am I overly invested in any of the two, so it depends. By Disney I really like Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare before Christmas and Frankenweenie, to pick a few. As for DreamWorks, Penguins of Madagascar are THE SHIT omg 3. coffee or tea? I’m a tea person, however I enjoy coffee flavour in things
4. books or movies?
Both
5. windows or mac?
I use windows, don’t feel like I’m missing out or anything tbh
6. dc or marvel?
I’m only starting to get into comics, and I’ve probably seen more marvel films than dc ones, but I think I like dc a little more I like the older Batman films by Tim Burton.
7. xbox or playstation?
playstation. “OF COURSE we’re going to go with the ps4 - they’re blacker!” :D
8. dragon age or mass effect?
Haven’t played either, but was thinking about giving Dragon age a go
9. night owl or early riser?
aw shit dude, I don’t even know anymore. my sleeping schedule is so fucked up lately, I tend to be a night owl tho. But hey, time isn’t really anyway, so..
10. cards or chess?
both, but you can do more with cards. like chess is just one game, but there are lots of different card games. I personally identify with CAH, I think the company should hire me, because I’m a horrible person lmao
11. chocolate or vanilla?
chocolate all the way. I don’t eat it often, but when I do, I’m a snob about it - I only like the dark stuff (only vegan ofc). bonus points, if there’s dried fruit like berries in it. To sum it up (i’m taking this way too seriously and detailed lol, but I have insomnia ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) overall, chocolate flavour is better I guess, vanilla makes me vomit, it’s disgusting and I hate it. 12.vans or converse? I used to own a pair of converse, but neither are shoes I’d wear now
13. fluff or angst?
a good combination of both ehehe
14. beach or forest?
forests are awesome - they are green and smell amazing, you can spot a lot of wild animals and the atmosphere is very serene and calming. I’ll always pick forests over beaches, unless the beach is all sand or small round marble stones, the water is clear without the detached, rotting algae stuff that floats around and ew, the sun has fucked off so I don’t get sunburnt (my skin always skips the tan stage right to red and I prefer pale skin anyway) and all sweaty and shit, there are NO people beside those I’m there with and I do NOT spot any animal while in the water that’s bigger than like 5cm. Because even though I love and respect it deeply, I’m genuinely afraid of sea life, I don’t care that there are lots of totally harmless creatures. …lmao, I feel like a rich asshole saying all that - way too many demands. (sorry sea/ocean, I love you, but you freak me the fuck out)
15. dogs or cats?
I have dogs, but I love both. With dogs, the love is more likely to be returned though :D
16. clear skies or rain?
clear night skies for star gazing, rain during the day
17. cooking or eating out?
I eat mostly raw vegan nowadays, because it’s healthy I don’t have the energy to cook and can’t be arsed and I’m not too fond of eating in public so… preparing/eating food at home?
18. spicy food or mild food?
all the spices lol
19. halloween/samhain or solstice/yule/christmas?
How is this a question, have you met me? My whole existence basically revolves around celebrating Halloween like every day
20. would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot?
The first one is way better imho, I’m usually a little too cold anyway (no pun intended omg) and I’m fine with that.
21. if you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Hydrokinesis (so basically I’d be a water bender ehehe) or Telepathy
22. animation or live action?
both are great (with the exception of some anime adaptations lol)
23. baths or showers?
showers don’t take too long, but baths are very nice from time to time
24. team cap or team ironman?
Team Loki, duh! No, but honestly, I’m not really invested in the whole civil war thing, but if cap is a nazi, then I’m team ironman
25. fantasy or sci-fi?
both are amazing and bring happiness into my life
26. do you have three or four favourite quotes, if so, what are they?
I guess I have a lot of favourite ones, but these two came to my mind right now: “I do desire we may be strangers” (Shakespeare) it’s such a classy and eloquent way to tell someone you hate them :D “And so being young and dipped in folly, I fell in love with melancholy” (E.A. Poe) because ME tbh
27. youtube or netflix?
Youtube, no netflix here
28. harry potter or percy jackson?
Harry Potter all the way. I’ve read the first Percy jackson pentalogy and don’t get me wrong, Greek mythology is awesome, but wizards over demigods
29. when do you feel accomplished?
Idk, when I’m able to do more than the bare minimum and when I totally Tony Stark the whole subject/study material the night before the exam. and probably smug/petty rather than accomplished - when I prove horrible people/people I don’t like wrong or do things they don’t approve of lol
30. star wars or star trek?
I have to say Star Trek but I love both
31. paperback or hardback books?
Hardback. HARDBACK!
32. horror or rom-com?
I’ve always gravitated towards horror - psychological, gothic, really bad b/c movie style, etc. - I get bored by rom-coms
33. tv shows or movies?
depends, but both. as an aspiring actor, beside theatre, I think I’d like to work on films over tv shows - if I ever get the chance to do so that is
34. favourite animal?
penguins, rats, corvids.. but like, birds in general and all animals are awesome anyway and precious and worth of life 35. favourite genre of music? alternative rock - which is a broad spectrum tho, so I guess rock sub-genres in general.. art rock, goth rock, punk rock my favourite (purely because of the name) is krautrock (aka kosmische Musik) which is the German term for space rock, but the literal translation is either herb or cabbage rock lmao :D throw in some psychedelic stuff, ambient music, experimental and classical and I’m good to go
36. least favourite book?
Madame Bovary. I think The Great Gatsby was boring too. I don’t usually read books without researching it a bit before so I can somewhat predict whether I’ll like it or not. (btw, if you’re into fantasy at all, 10/10 recommend reading the series A Raven’s Shadow by Anthony Ryan, he’s such an eloquent writer and the plot and characters are incredible! 37. favourite season? The season of Halloween - autumn all the way
38. song that’s currently stuck in your head?
Cinnamon Bone by Eliza Rickman. She has a really nice voice and combined with the melody it sounds very unique. Actually didn’t know who the singer was until a few days ago. She also performed in the weather section in a Welcome to Night Vale episode. Oh and I rewatched CATS the musical on Sunday, so like.. the whole libretto is playing in my head on loop :D I’ve pretty much known the entire thing by heart since I was like 8 lol
39. what kind of pyjamas do you wear?
Either boxer shorts or Levi Ackerman’s running titan pyjamas lmao
40. how many existential crises do you have on an average day?
I’m having an ongoing one since the age of 16 tbh
41. if you can only choose one song to be played at your funeral, what would it be?
Space Oddity by David Bowie
42. favourite theme song to a TV show?
I’ve know this song before I started watching the show, but Far from Any Road from True Detective is amazing. And the opening to snk season 2 lol, it gets me all fired up and ready to salivate every time Levi appears cry probably idk :D
43. harry potter movies or books?
even though, they are problematic in some aspects, both have their charm (pun absolutely intended this time)
44. you can make your OTP become canon but you’ll forget that tumblr exists. will you do it?
Bitch, my otp is canon. and I doubt anyone can really forget about tumblr - you can try and leave, but it will never leave you
45. do you play an instrument and if so, what is it?
Not like professionally or since early childhood and all that, but I taught myself how to play the violin and I think I’m pretty decent. Same goes for drums. My dad and I low-key collect musical instruments, I think we have around 20+ pieces ^^
46. what is the worst way to die?
alone and helpless and in excruciating pain from whatever the cause was that didn’t kill you immediately though, so you have to suffer
47. if you could be entirely invisible for a day, what would you do?
Be sneaky ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) lol idk, I’d do stuff anxiety and self-consciousness prevent me from in normal life. Okay, that is so pathetic, but my first thought was “I’d go swimming” … *wipes away a tear*
48. If you could have personally witnessed anything in history what would it be?
I feel like it’s kinda selfish and considering I’d choose this out of any moment in history maybe a wasted opportunity? but I would have loved to see David Bowie perform. Idk, I’m sure there’s more, but it’s 3am here..
49. If you could understand animals but you could never understand humans again, would you?
I find I often don’t understand humans anyway..
50. What is your most favourite album currently?
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars by David Bowie is my go to favourite album, haven’t really listened to whole albums lately, just a few songs here and there 51. (my question) What is your favourite word/phrase/colloquiallism? Name one (or more) per language you speak c:
tbh, Jeremy tagged most of the people I’d tag too, so I’m just adding @the-river-dream-shore and @slecnaztemnot to this if they or anyone else feel like it ;) I’m going to sleep now hopefully~
Note: Wow, that’s a lot of reading material lol. Why did I sound so angry?? I was tired, so that took a toll on my answers, I promise I’m not that much of an asshole :D
