Film after film: Midnight Run (dir. Martin Brest, 1988)

Despite featuring the most obnoxious soundtrack in a few entertaining and relaxed chase scenes, it was a more pleasant watch than I expected. It's one of the films whose cover I saw all the time in VHS rental shops. Grodin and De Niro are a great couple of leads, never overplaying or chasing broad comedy laughs, which would be quite easy here. Others are pretty good too, especially Kotto, who steals scenes as a permanently pissed FBI agent.

Mark Farina Halloween 2015 Live Set
Tumblr media
This is a 3-hour audio recording of Mark Farina Halloween 2015 live set recorded in Orange County, California, on October 31, 2015.
Mark F'ing Farina. Easily in the top 5 deep house dj's. Probably in the top three. Maybe in the top 2?
Come on. I've never heard someone deliver such deep funk so consistently. Every. Single. Time.
So this is an interesting recording. It's not from my archive of classic rave recordings, nor something recorded recently. This is the audio counterpart to a live video stream I did all the way back in 2015.
Today, post Covid, the mention of live streaming elicits not even a yawn, we are so desensitized to it by now. For obvious reasons, the real streaming revolution happened 2019-2021. So I consider it a little feather in my cap that Rave Tapes was running good-sounding, multi-cam streams long before the trend took off.
The event? A cozy Halloween party hosted by Swerve Underground, the monthly event hosted by producer/dj Wally Callerio of Dufflebag Recordings and partner/dj 1st Nature. Wally has been a respected producer for years and had the right connections to pull some amazing names down to their Orange County venue, an hour south of Los Angeles. Names like Dereck Carter, Doc Martin, and other titans of the deep house movement.
So when the opportunity came up to do a live video stream of their Halloween party, taking place in a cool bohemian art space, with special guest Mark Farina? Pfft. It was the chance I had been waiting for, lol!
So, miraculously, the whole thing went off almost without a hitch. I say almost because I believe power was cut to the decks at one point. But considering it was a 2+ hour set, we forgot about it almost instantly after power was restored. Otherwise, the internet connection was good, my gear held up. It happened. In fact, here's the video evidence:
youtube
So this is the audio to that. While the audio in the YouTube version sounds unbelievably clean, this sounds even better. I finally went back and properly mixed the four audio channels, left-right stereo pair from the dj decks, then left-right stereo pair from the room mic.
It sounds absolutely pristine, if I do say so myself. I had to decide how loud to keep the mic levels vs the feed from the dj mixer. I think I am happy with these levels but I might change my mind and update the file at some point.
The content? Well, it's good ol' reliable Mark Farina. Of course every dj has a "look" and Farina certainly has his trademark glasses and scruffy chin. But man, when you see that familiar visage behind the decks and hear the funky bass line over the system, you know you have nothing to worry about. You know you're in for a good time.
Last time I saw Farina was EDC 2022 Bionic Jungle stage. It was very late Sat night. Actually very early morning Sunday about 4 am. Still dark and trippy.
Saturday. Hump day. People are grinding in more ways than one. And Mark is closing out little Bionic Jungle. I don't mean little in a condescending way. Actually, the inconspicuousness of the stage is what made it so great. It was def an intimate space and you could get right up close to your favorite deep house dj's. My only issue that night was that it wasn't going to yield a complete Rave Tapes recording. Yes, I recorded while I danced there. But knew I was arriving late because of another set, and I knew I was leaving early because I don't like getting stuck in parking. While there may have been an hour of material, the other issue was there was a nasty buzzing coming from some vibrating stage rigging.
So that's probably why I'm mentioning EDC here, because it's a good opportunity to discuss it since there will never be a Rave Tapes recording from that night to link it to.
I guess my point is, be it at Swerve Halloween 2015, EDC 2022, or the other times I've heard Farina play, Farina always, ALWAYS, delivers a top shelf performance.
While I'm always eager to bring these live sets to you for the sake of your listening pleasure, truth be told, I get excited when posting these because in most cases it's the first time I get to have easy SoundCloud access to the mixes, too.
And with this one, I'm over-the-moon thrilled for completely selfish reasons ;)
Nevertheless, please enjoy!

let's do a weird headcanon thing
Tumblr media
WHAT THEY SMELL LIKE: Her skin and hair usually smells of lavender. When she takes bathes she usually adds a bit of scented oil and if not she likes taking flowers and floating them in the bath water. On the days when she's feeling like she needs to give herself some extra care, she adds jasmine tea to her baths. She dries roses and lavender and hangs them upside down by her bed in her room. Sometimes she likes to put a flower in her hair. However, run into her just after she’s left a speakeasy and you’ll smell cigar smoke on her for sure, which she hates. modern times: She smells like fruit thanks to the miracle of mass-produced lotions, soaps, and laundry detergent.
HOW THEY SLEEP ( sleeping position, schedule, etc ):  Halia does not get more than 6 hours of sleep as it hurts her head to do so. She works as a singer most nights, which, can take up her time from 9pm-5am and so she usually sleeps from 6am-12am. Sometimes she goes without sleeping for a couple of days at a time when she is too stressed or in danger. Her sleeping position: on her left side, arm under her pillow, back against the wall, front facing the door. She is known to talk in her sleep and will have a conversation if you talk to her, but she will not remember anything. Halia isn’t exactly what you’d call a light sleeper, but if you open her door in the middle of the night, she will wake up. modern times: Sleeps 6 hours anywhere between 1am-10am. Enjoy’s naps.
WHAT MUSIC THEY ENJOY: Jazz and instrumental piano. She also became a big fan of the earlier rock music and some of the old surf-rock in the 50s-60s. Some artists and bands that she’s fond of are: Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Santo & Johnny Farina, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Beach Boys. Her favorite song is “Sleepwalk”.
HOW MUCH TIME THEY SPEND EVERY MORNING GETTING READY: She has a bath when she comes home before she goes to bed. She spends about 20 minutes on her hair, but, since she doesn’t wear very much make up during the day, it only takes her a few minutes to do her lipstick and her eyes. She applies more make up before she goes on stage though. modern times: 10 minutes if she doesn’t need to be fancy.
FAVOURITE THING TO COLLECT: Vinyl records. modern times: She never got into 8-track, cassette, CDs, or MP3. Halia does not have cable, but she does have a tv and a vhs player for all of old hollywood movies she’s collected.
LEFT OR RIGHT HANDED: Ambidextrous.
RELIGION (if any): n/a
FAVOURITE SPORT(S): She likes watching a good boxing match every now and again. She goes running when she can (cardio is important when you might be chased by the cops). modern times: She enjoys martial arts and parkour.
FAVOURITE TOURISTY THING TO DO WHEN TRAVELING: Try the food that that particular place is known for!
FAVOURITE KIND OF WEATHER: Cold. She hates sweating and she loves to wear layers.
WEIRD/OBSCURE FEAR THEY HAVE: Romantic relationships or more accurately loving someone way more than they love her. Stems from her relationship with her ex-boyfriend who came back from the war front with PTSD.
THE CARNIVAL/ARCADE GAME THEY ALWAYS WIN WITHOUT FAIL: As long as the game has not been rigged, she will always do really well in a game that involves aim. She will knock down all the milk bottles with that baseball, or shoot all those targets and win that giant teddy bear, sir!

Highlights from the one and a half hour pilot of Crime Story which I haven’t even finished yet because I had to go to bed:
- Within the first five minutes we have established the basic existential equivalency of Cops and Crooks (Working Men in a Dangerous Profession)
- Criminals, law enforcement, and lawyers: The Ultimate Messy Love Triangle
- Dennis Farina, emotionally constipated CPD Lieutenant, tells Stephen Lang, explosively impassioned public defender, that Like Recognizes Like and maybe he should have been a COP instead of a LAWYER… Lang throws a binder at him and Farina throws it right back. LOL
- If there’s one thing an angry man will do it’s throw shit and break stuff. Co-signed, can confirm. When in doubt, fling something! Smash a window! Go nuts!
- Precociously talented but impulsive upstart with a penchant for cowboy scores + his stoic friend and business partner who wants to build relationships, mitigate risk, and invest wisely in existing Outfit structures
- Terms, conditions, negotiations, risk management, outlays, payouts, percentages. Nothing harps on hard numbers and the deal-closing process like a Michael Mann production. The only difference between running a black market business and a legal one is that if the former fails you pay in blood instead of a bankruptcy filing.
- We are ALSO going to review the metallurgical chemistry involved in breaking into this safe! Of course!
- 1963 as reconstructed by 1986 MM aesthetic sensibilities, i.e. network television’s sickest drip and set design
- Because it’s network television, we have to say “spaghetti” in lieu of… other slurs against Italians lmfao
- You’re telling me this murderous highline thief went to LAW SCHOOL??? FINE! EVERYONE HAS BEEN TO LAW SCHOOL!
- It’s Chicago and everyone’s got a price ‘cause “That’s how it works in this town!”
- “You ever think about getting out of Chicago?”
- Working Man tragically murdered JUST before he gets out of – you guessed it – Chicago
- Why would you go to therapy for your trauma when you can address it by throwing yourself into your work, which necessarily exposes you to further trauma! [Honks clown horn]
- ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CAR CHASE
- Martin Ferrero as a scene-stealing, scenery-chewing Rat Motherfucker
- Glimpses of Ted Levine who will no doubt be introduced as a major player later on
