This blue gown, designed by Margaret Furse was first worn by Siân Phillips as Gwendolen in the 1964 film Becket. It was used again in the Doctor Who serial The Crusade in the episodes The Knights of Jaffa and The Wheel of Fortune, where it was worn by Jean Marsh as Joanna.

I was excited to notice another overlap between Good Omens and Doctor Who(I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed 😊). Siân Phillips played Mrs Henderson, the owner of the Windmill Theatre, in Good Omens season 2. She also played Enid Meadows, the older woman in the Welsh pub, in the most recent episode of Doctor Who, 73 Yards.

Diahann Carroll Vs. Siân Phillips
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Diahann Carroll - (Dynasty, Julia) - God every clip of her on Dynasty is just so iconic, her entrance, the bit where she shades Joan Collins' Alexis for her taste in caviar... "I wanted to be the first black bitch on television" she said, and she did it beautifully!
Siân Phillips - (I Claudius) - I Claudius was such a good show and her performance as Livia is one of the all time greats, imo. That character will always be THE bad bitch to me, and the writing was amazing but it was really her performance that made the character so devious and fun to watch, but also really complicated and compelling, and her line delivery is pretty much unmatched.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If they don't get the reference then give them the second gift of bringing more of Ancient Rome into their life by introducing them to the Classic TV miniseries "I, Claudius"!

Stay safe from Livia's plots, don't eat the figs!

we're listening to Sandman the audiobook Act II again, hearing parts we missed before now thanks to the inevitable falling asleep that always happens with audiobooks, sigh
and we're so happy that in the Augustus story, his wife Livia is voiced by Siân Phillips - who played the same character in I, Claudius some 45 years earlier

Tiny Review: Becket 1964. Royal friends to enemies.
Tumblr media
This definitely peaked my interest about the real Thomas Becket, leading to the discovery of the origin of *Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?*
Becket is a 1964 British historical drama film directed by Peter Glenville. It is a dramatic film adaptation of the 1959 play Becket or the Honour of God by Jean Anouilh. The film stars Richard Burton as Thomas Becket and Peter O'Toole as King Henry II, with John Gielgud as King Louis VII, Donald Wolfit as Gilbert Foliot, Paolo Stoppa as Pope Alexander III, Martita Hunt as Empress Matilda, Pamela Brown as Queen Eleanor, Siân Phillips, Felix Aylmer, Gino Cervi, David Weston and Wilfrid Lawson.
