Match Review: Manchester United U21s 3-2 Newcastle United U21s

A win at Carrington for Travis Binnion's boys to round out the year. Not bad at all.

James Nolan opened the scoring early for United, but Newcastle almost immediately equalised with a well worked switch from left mid to right wing and back across.

Winger Mateo Mejia was brought down in the middle of the first half bang in the middle of the Newcastle box. Up stepped Joe Hugill to put United back in front.

Sam Mather's excellent free kick hit the bar just before half time, but United looked good as the half ended. This, inevitably, didn't translate to after half time and Newcastle managed to equalise yet again.

More magic from Mejia saw United keep fighting and eventually a break opened up down the right wing, with the wide man holding off the Newcastle LB, riding the tackle into the box, and squaring the ball to a primed Shola Shoretire who curled in a nice finish to secure the three points for the Red Devils.

28. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Let me start off by saying this is another incredibly strong debut. I've read two amazing reviews in one month, there must be something in the water. Brown gives us a fascinating world based on West Africa, with a particularly unique magic system (at least that we've seen in YA Lit), and vastly different but incredible protagonists. Karina is a plus-sized (reinforced multiple times) bratty princess with a penchant for playing the oud. Malik is a nervous, anxiety-riddled refugee arriving in time for a 50-year-festival. One thing I adore is that nothing about their core personality was forced to change, except how they naturally grew and progressed. By the end of it Karina was still a bratty princess and Malik was still an anxiety-ridden refugee. In fact, both things worked to their benefits. The story is both a "tournament" archetype via Malik, and royal court intrigue as Karina tries to find out who in the palace could want the queen dead.They two plots manage to both interact with each other as well as hold their own chapters, which was really fun to read, especially when it all came together at the end. The pacing was wonderful in this story - it was constantly moving forward and told us a lot about the characters and the world they inhabited. By the end of the book, with all its twists and turns, I just wanted to know more. And I'm irritated knowing it's going to be at least a year before I get to see what happens next.

29. We Unleash The Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia

3.5 stars rounded up to a 4! As I reconsidered while writing this review, 3 stars. In this book we go from Dani's point of view to Carmen's. We learn more about La Voz, Carmen's upbringing. The story and plot itself is good. We see some more of Mateo, look at what's going on each side of the walls. I will say, I'm still not 100% sold on Carmen being the sole POV for this book, which is what dragged it's rating down. I often felt like I wasn't getting the full understanding of everything and that I was removed from the exciting action of the world at large. It felt a little too quiet for the final novel of a duology, except for the final battle. If this were a second novel in a trilogy, I think I would feel differently. As far as the writing, prose, pacing, and character development, it was solid. It just didn't feel quite as explosive and compelling as the first book.

30.  Can’t Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Peterson

I was super excited for this book - as an avid follower of AHP's page "Celebrity Gossip: Academic Style" and a longtime member of the corresponding Facebook group, I got to see the bits and pieces she posted while the "sausage was being made" so to speak. The book was both what I expected and not what I expected at all, which is exactly what I should have expected in the first place. I will say that I found the stories and interviews compelling enough, I think in the end it was about a very narrow scope of millenial - mainly white, cishet, middle to upperclass millenials. I think many parts of it are universal and applied to myself, but it was definitely a narrower scope. AHP's writing is clever and interesting for sure, and I finished it relatively quick and was immersed. It was a good book! But I will say it wasn't the greatest, and I think so much more could have been expanded upon.

31. The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi

I am absolutely floored. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in turn for an honest review! I finished this book approximately 20 hours ago and I can't stop playing scenes over in my mind. I usually think that second books suffer from either bad pacing or character assassinations. But the Silvered Serpents was just as engrossing as the first book. Chokshi's writing keeps improving with each book she writes. It reads and feels like a breathtaking movie heist, with it's loveable cast of characters. In ensemble books (like everyone's favorite YA heist ensemble book that shall not be mentioned) sometiems I feel like the characters are only drawn together because of their circumstance, and we don't get to see enough of the dynamics. That is NOT the case in Silvered Serpents, where every single character has a meaningful interaction with every other one. I truly believe in this found family, and that they platonically love each other, and would die for each other. Platonic love isn't written enough, especially in YA Lit. I will add - the YA label for this one is holding on by a tenuous thread. But we get to see how their relationships with each other affect the decisions that they make and who they are as a person. There will be a little suspension of belief needed for the way they arrive at conclusions but honestly, it all was written so well otherwise I didn't care. The setting is like a fairy tale - our ensemble is whisked away to wintry Siberia, to the Sleeping Palace. Chokshi's descriptions are incredible. It feels like a dream the way she writes, vivid and chilly and enticing. I am obsessed with this book. It is much darker and the stakes are higher. I cannot wait to reread the edited version coming out later this year.

❌ Discriminan a adulto mayor que corrió en huraches en #TraildeTamazulápan

Un adulto mayor de escasos recursos y de nombre Mauro mas conocido como “El Diablito” fue discriminado en el llamado Trail de Tamazulápan, Oaxaca, ya que al cruzar la meta en huaraches a este le fue entregado la medalla conmemorativa, pero no compró su “número”, por ello organizadores del evento le retiraron la misma que había sido colgada en su cuello.

El acto fue considerado de vergüenza por parte de los propios atletas que se dieron cita, ademas que Ricardo Mejia, el “Rey de las Montañas”, comentó en sus redes sociales oficiales que este adulto mayor ya tenia asegurado su lugar en el San Mateo Tlapiltepec en el #TraildelaMixtecaOaxaqueña.

Ricardo Mejia es el máximo exponente del Trail en México y Campeón Mundial, por ello pidió ayuda para encontrar a Mauro “El Diablito”, quien se robó las miradas en el propio evento llevado a cabo en Oaxaca.

Por su parte, los organizadores del #TraildeTamazulápan dieron a conocer un comunicado donde aseguraban que “no hubo discriminación” y fueron a entregar la medalla que antes habria sido retirada, pero el hecho indignó a la comunidad de atletismo en México y el mundo, hoy dia, Don Mauro “El Diablito”, ya tiene invitaciones para correr gratuitamente en otras carreras.

Match Review: Manchester United U21s 3-1 Everton U21s

A clinical opener from Hugill, a Zola-style free kick under the wall from Shoretire, and a late finish from Hugill again sealed the deal for United as they walked away 3-1 winners at home to Everton.

After a nervy start for United's youngsters at Leigh Sports Village saw keeper Ely Harrison called into action repeatedly in the first five minutes. Thanks to his heroics, United were able to settle, and a swift attack down the left wing saw a cutback into the box and Joe Hugill ready to stab home a first time shot.

At 1-0, United settled and Everton didn't really trouble. With the game dangerously close to boredom, up stepped captain Shola Shoretire with a goal in the 30th minute; a free kick under the wall ala Gianfranco Zola, tucking nicely into the bottom left corner and far away from the Everton keeper.

United started the second half strongly, full of confidence with their two goal lead and camped out in the Everton final third. A mistake allowed Everton to counter down the right flank and score an undeniable banger - much like his musical namesake. A freak goal by Sean Paul MacAllister in the 53rd minute saw his cross deflect off a United defender goalwards, inch perfectly lobbing Ely Harrison at his back post to make it 2-1.

The pressure resumed and United had a good three or four chances on goal through the likes of Hugill and Mejia, before Hugill bagged his second in the 79th minute.

If not for the goalkeeping heroics from both sides this game could have popped off and been a stormer. United were comfortably the better side, with almost 60% possession, 9 corners, and 6 of their 9 shots on target, but Everton had chances too. On a different day this could have been a 7-3 result for United and have all eyes watching.

A crucial three points pull United into 10th place on 11 points, just ahead of Chelsea on goal difference, but it's a points total the side will be looking to build upon and quickly. In contrast, a tight top end of the table sees Spurs clear in 1st place on 24 points (8 wins from 8) but 2nd place through to 5th are all on 17 points.

世界棒球12強賽11月起開打，在台灣進行的B組賽事將由中華隊碰上日本、委內瑞拉和波多黎各，中華隊若要進軍東京奧運，第一步必須先突破小組預賽取得晉級。來自南美的波多黎各世界棒球排名第11名，由曾經在大聯盟敲出434轟的名球星Juan González領軍，陣容中有幾位台灣球迷熟知的球員。

上屆12強賽波多黎各在預賽碰上中華隊時，鏖戰到12局由波多黎各靠著再見滿貫砲以7比4獲勝，波多黎各晉級8強，而中華隊在小組賽遭淘汰，8強賽時波多黎各則以3比9敗給日本，這屆波多黎各小組賽就要再與中華隊及日本碰頭。

同樣是美國職棒球員重要輸出國，今年有28位波多黎各球員在大聯盟出賽，包括Javier Baez、Carlos Correa、Yadier Molina等球星，但受限40人名單無法參賽的限制，讓12強波多黎各球員名單星光黯淡不少，陣中只有4位是現役小聯盟球員，其餘球員則多效力獨立聯盟和當地聯賽。

投手陣容：

下個月將滿41歲的羅曼是波多黎各陣中年紀最長的球員，2010年加盟兄弟象效力2年後，2012年被日職養樂多燕子簽下，2016年從日職回歸中職，加盟Lamigo桃猿還拿下12勝7敗的成績，2017年回到中信兄弟戰績只剩4勝8敗。羅曼目前擔任波多黎各聯賽球隊的投手教練，在18-19的波多黎各冬季聯盟只有3場出賽，本次以選手身份入選代表隊，可能不會是球隊主戰先發投手，而是以經驗傳承為主。

球迷熟悉的投手還有Miguel Mejia（米吉亞），米吉亞曾經效力兄弟象和Lamigo桃猿，在2014年拿下中職救援王，還創下連續34場救援成功和單季35次救援成功的紀錄，隔年轉戰日職西武獅但僅出賽4場比賽。今年31歲的米吉亞本季效力墨西哥聯盟，定位仍是終結者，26場出賽有22次是最後一任上陣，拿下1勝4敗8救援，墨聯防禦率4.68。

另外一位Efraín Nieves（拿威）則是曾在2016年短暫待過桃猿隊，今年效力波多黎各聯賽，今年也曾代表波多黎各參加泛美運動會，是波多黎各預定的先發投手之一。

野手陣容：

捕手：Kevin Torres、Wilfredo Rodríguez

29歲的捕手Kevin Torres在2008年大聯盟選秀會上被遊騎兵挑中，曾在2017年升上3A但隔年就遭釋出，今年在波多黎各聯賽出賽，另外一位25歲捕手Wilfredo Rodriguez本季同在波多黎各聯賽，也曾效力美職體系的他，最高層級曾到洛磯隊高階1A。

內野手：Yariel Gonzalez、Jack Lopez、Ozzie Martinez、Luis Mateo、Jeffrey Dominguez、Jesmuel Valentin、Ivan De Jesus jr.、David Vidal

外野手：Anthony Garcia、Danny Ortiz、Jay Gonzalez、Edwin Gomez

本次波多黎各名單中4位現役美職體系球員皆為野手，25歲的三壘手Yariel Gonzalez今年從紅雀高階一A上到2A，曾在6月中短暫升上3A打了7場比賽，在2A繳出56場比賽11轟成績，在3A的7場比賽就敲出3轟。Jack Lopez則效力勇士3A，在球隊定位為工具人，3A有96場出賽敲出98支安打12轟，打擊率2成73。

內野手Jesmuel Valentin曾在2018年費城人時升上大聯盟，但多半為替補上陣，留下46場出賽14支安打1轟的成績，今年轉戰金鶯全年都待在2A。

外野手Anthony Garcia則是在2015年就曾升上3A，進4年在2A和3A間徘徊，去年在運動家3A全季出賽敲出25轟表現亮眼，但今年來到巨人之後，受到傷勢影響只出賽55場敲出6轟，6月中旬後就進入傷兵名單休養至季末。

波多黎各陣容中火力最凶猛的則是外野手左打者Danny Ortiz，他曾在2017年上到大聯盟，今年則在墨西哥聯盟出賽，單季敲出42轟是墨西哥聯盟本季的全壘打王，114分則在聯盟排名第3，長打火力驚人。

球隊行程：

波多黎各在10月下旬飛抵亞洲，將先到韓國與韓國代表隊進行2場官辦熱身賽，比賽時間為11月1日和2日，地點皆在首爾高尺巨蛋。結束韓國的熱身賽後，波多黎各將來到台灣備戰，11月5日晚間波多黎各是中華隊開幕戰的對手，11月6日晚間波多黎各則將到桃園與日本隊交手，11月7日中午波多黎各則將對上委內瑞拉。
