'Not About Me' by Eduardo Machado: Two Pandemics & Hiding in Plain Sight (Review)
'Not About Me' is a must see in its parallels about life during the blossoming "gay disease' a throwback to our present with COVID which still roams and kills.
(L to R): Mateo d’Amato, Charles Manning in Not About Me at Theater for the New City (courtesy of Carol Rosegg) Contagion converts human bodies into weapons. The “gay disease,” an early name for the AIDS pandemic, burgeoned in the time of President Ronald Reagan, who initially did nothing to even acknowledge it existed. Likewise, COVID-19 which began in the time of an even more derelict…

Behind the Screen: Asian and Latin American voices of fictional librarians
Tumblr media
From left to right: Benedict Wong, Ashly Burch, Joey Haro, Elaine Del Valle, and Kenn Navarro
There are Asian and Latin American actors who have voiced many librarians in fiction over the years. Part of understanding fictional librarians is understanding those behind the screen and this article contributes to that. Part 1 of this series focused on Black women and men who voice fictional librarians.
This post is reprinted from Pop Culture Library Review and Wayback Machine.
In this part, I am profiling Asian and Latin American voice actors who voiced librarians.
About the voice actors
There are many talented voice actors who aren't White men or White woman, who comprise the majority of those who voice animated librarians, especially in Western animation. These talented voice actors include Benedict Wong as Wong in What If...? episode ("What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?"), Ashly Burch who likely voices an unnamed librarian in a We Bare Bears episode ("The Library"), and Joseph "Joey" Haro as Mateo in Elena of Avalor. Specifically, Burch is of Thai descent, Wong is of Hong Kong descent, and Haro is of Cuban descent (and is gay).
There's also Elaine Del Valle as Val the Octopus in Dora the Explorer episode ("Backpack") who is Latine, and Kenn Navarro as Flippy in Happy Tree Friends episode ("Random Acts of Silence") who is a Filipino animator. Additionally, there is Emanuel Garijo as Kaeloo in French in Kaeloo episode ("Let's Play at Reading Books"). Doug Rand voices Kaeloo in the English dub, and Domenico Coscia in the Italian dub, to name another character. As it turns out, Navarro is one of the creators of Happy Tree Friends, while Valle is known  as the actor and writer of an one-woman stage play she created: Brownsville Bred. Garijo has done French voice work for years, while Rand has done English voice work, while I couldn't find anything on Coscia.
Another person worth mentioning is Vivienne Medrano, a Latine animator of Salvadoran descent who created the animated shows Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss along with a video for her webcomic Zoophobia. She voices Sarah in Nico Colaleo's series, Too Loud, replacing Julia Vickerman, who was racked by controversy following allegations that she engaged in pedophilia, after beginning her series, Twelve Forever, which was sadly cancelled by Netflix after the end of its first season. The reason for its cancellation is not known.
It is also highly probable that Janice Kawaye, an actress of Japanese descent who has voiced characters since 1983, likely voices the librarian in Totally Spies episode ("Totally Switched"). Kawayke has voiced characters like Couchpo in Edens Zero, Shiori in Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, Jenny / XJ-9 in My Life as a Teenage Robot, and Sara in Invader Zim, to name a few characters she has voiced.
An additional late entry to this list is Jenny Lorenzo, who presumably voices the skeleton librarian, Eztli, in an episode of Victor and Valentino. Lorenzo is known for her role as Lupe in the same show, but she has also voiced Choo Choo and Spooky in Jellystone. She is a Cuban-American actor known for her work on We Are Mitú and is a co-founder of BuzzFeed's Pero Like, becoming a viral sensation for her Abuela character, and what her IMDB page calls "relatable, Latino-based content seen through the comedic and nostalgic lens of a 1st generation Cuban-American."
Another additional entry is Danny Trejo. He voices Bobby Daniels, a bad-boy librarian in an episode of The Ghost and Molly McGee. Trejo, who is of Mexican descent, is best known for his role as Isador "Machete" Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise films. In terms of animation, he voiced Enrique, Victor Velasquez, and other characters in multiple King of the Hill episodes, along with assorted roles in El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, The Cleveland Show, Young Justice (as Bane), Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, and Tangled: The Series (as Wreck Marauder / Malice Marauder). He also voiced characters in Big City Greens, Elena of Avalor, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia (Tronos), Victor and Valentino, and The Casagrandes.
About the characters
Tumblr media
From left to right: Wong, unnamed librarian, Val, Flippy, Kaeloo, Sarah, unnamed librarian, and Eztli
As I described Wong, he is the first librarian shown in the series What If...?, trying to guide Doctor Strange, warning him that tinkering with time will threaten the entire fabric of the universe, but he cares little. Even so, he later helps the good Strange train to fight the evil Strange. Unfortunately, he has less of a role in the episode as the other librarian, Cagliostro. Luckily, he has more of a role in the live-action films, as Jennifer Snoek-Brown has written about time and again.
The librarian in the We Bare Bears episode, on the other hand, is stern, has some characteristics of a spinster librarian, professional work attire, wanting to do her job and following the rules. I concluded that she is probably overworked and exhausted, something you don't always see when you see depictions of librarians in animation. She also is helpful to patrons, even letting them sleep in the library, which I found surprising. Mateo, on the other hand, is a wizard and royal advisor to the show's protagonist, Elena. He bucks stereotypes of Latine people, not shushing people at all, remaining as helpful as he can instead.
Val the Octopus is a minor character in Dora the Explorer, having a variety of odd jobs like running a cash register, driving a mail truck (or an ice cream truck), being a lifeguard, or a librarian. She is the latter in the episode ("Backpack") and is vary courteous to Dora.
Flippy in Happy Tree Friends episode ("Random Acts of Silence") is perhaps the most murderous librarian I have ever seen in animation to-date. This not unique to this episode, as he often causes other characters to die on purpose. Despite this, he seems to die very infrequently during the run of the series.
Kaeloo is the protagonist of Kaeloo. She is the guardian of the place known as Smileyland and has an ambiguous gender. And in the episode "Let's Play at Reading Books" she acts as a librarian, attempting to shush people and get them to listen, even though this is a failure.
Sarah in Colaleo's series, Too Loud, is a new librarian who joins Sara and Desiree (going by a different name for much of the series), brought in to help out with the library. While Sara nor Desiree are big fans of her at first, they come around to her, and she becomes more of their friend as the series moves forward, helping with librarian matters.
Librarian in Totally Spies episode ("Totally Switched") is one of the most interesting librarian characters in fiction that I have ever seen. Due to a personality switcher, which switched her personality with that of a wrestler, she becomes buff and even throws a patron across the room. She is later shown listing weights and doing jump rope. Hopefully she becomes a stronger librarian and better to her librarian.
Another entry is Eztli in the Victor and Valentino episode "An Evening with Mic and Hun". In the episode, Victor and Valentino, who are in the underworld, have to get past Eztli, a skeleton librarian, who shushes them. Victor won't stand for this, while his brother, Valentino comes up with a plan. This is disregarded as the librarian is smashed by a boulder and they get the extra skeleton arm she is holding. In the episode, she is also shown putting a book on a cart and stamping a book with a past due stamp, with the fee of one soul.
One final entry is Bobby Daniels in an episode of The Ghost and Molly McGee which is aptly named "Bad Boy Bobby Daniels". In the episode, Molly, her father, and Scratch go to the Mewline Public Library to find the Bad Boy of Brighton, Bobby Daniels, to help her elderly friend. They attempt to turn Daniels "back" into a bad boy but it doesn't work and they let him stay as the librarian. Later, Bobby and Patty get together after Molly put in a false book delivery notice. Their love ends up blossoming and it seems that he is taken away from his library job.
That's all for this post! Until the next one!

wait I’m new who’s Nathaniel ?!?
OHOHOHOHOHOHO HELLO MY SWEET AND WELCOME TO THIS RABBIT HOLE WE CALL LMFE >:))
//Spoilers for LMFE Chapter 61 and beyond!
Nathaniel Velasquez is the triplets' new friend! He actually appears later in the story on Chapter 61: Finding Papá and has appeared as a side character ever since. He is particularly close with Ignacio in the two year time skip and has become his bestfriend since then.
He is a dopey little shepherd boy who you would often see tending to the sheep up the pastures than to play with other kids. Although he does have friends, but he likes to help his father with the work up the Alcantara home.
His personality is more on the mellow side; albeit of a stuttering boy who would fumble over his words whenever he talked with strangers. However, he had developed a sort of fondness to Ignacio and would often even joke with him. Abuelo Mateo (the triplets' grandfather and Bruno's father-in-law) would often ask Nathaniel to remind Ignacio that he has work to do. Ignacio regards Nathaniel's advise as important as his mother's and would confide in him with his troubles.
Nathaniel's defining trait in the current timeline (nine years old, eight years before the canon timeline) is how his fluffy hair obscures his eyes. Ignacio described him as such in Chapter 62: Bring Them Home as;
"...it was a boy his age; clothes muddy and wrinkled, leaves and hay sticking out of his pockets, and Ignacio swore he couldn’t see a glimpse of the boy’s eyes from the unkempt curls that framed his face and draped his forehead in a curtain of caramel. There were freckles that decorated his cheeks, a daisy or two poking out of the overturned straw hat at his side, and his pants were folded up beneath his knees..."
@cheesy-cryptid actually made art of our precious little shepherd boy! Check it out here!

love the look of this group! 1 question, under some of the open bios there are other characters that have bio links but no bio, and aren't listed under upcoming fcs. are they other characters eventually to be added? ie. jordana velasquez under the bio for mateo herrera?
Hi, anon! Glad you're interested, and thank you for messaging. ♥
Yes, if there are connections in biographies that are linked but don't currently redirect to another character, it means they're not written yet but will be in the future. Some have more progress made than others, but if you ever like the sound of one of those connections, please never hesitate to ask about them! For the most part, they're already planned out to a certain degree, and I can move them up the priority list if I know somebody out there is looking forward to them.

☾Beatrice Velasquez☽
This is an extensive, in-depth explanation of Beatrice Velasquez’s backstory. For a much smaller summary, click here!
Tumblr media
Part 1 - A Happy Childhood
March, 1985: Santiago Morales, Beatrice’s biological father, leaves her mother months before Beatrice is born.
November 2nd, 1985: Beatrice Castillo is born to Sofia Castillo in a hospital in Zipaquirá, Colombia. She is given her mother’s last name.
August 27th, 1991: Beatrice’s younger half-brother, Mateo, is born. His father abandons the family several months before he was born.
July, 1993: Beatrice’s mother goes on a business trip to the United States and meets Román Velasquez, a Colombian-American man living in New York. The two get to know each other in the few weeks she’s there and start a relationship.
August, 1995: After several years of a long-distance relationship, with the two visiting each other on several occasions, Román proposes to Beatrice’s mother. She accepts and they start to make plans to move her family to the United States.
January, 1996: Beatrice spends her tenth birthday and one last Christmas in Colombia before her mother packs all their things and moves them to New York. They move into a townhouse in Hell’s Kitchen and Sofia and Román get married a few weeks later in a small ceremony.
April, 1996: Román officially adopts Beatrice and her brother and gives them his last name. She is officially Beatrice Velasquez, a change that she readily accepts. She has started to view Román as her father and has no issue with the man calling himself that. As a result of her adoption, Beatrice is given American citizenship.
September, 1996: After a summer full of half-successful English tutoring, Beatrice is put into a public school. She still struggles to become totally fluent in English and has a difficult time getting through her first year of public schooling. Her English slowly gets better over time until she no longer struggles to get through her schoolwork or communicate with her classmates.
Part 2 - How to Make an Orphan
September, 2000: Beatrice starts her first year of high school and relishes in the feeling of a comfortable, normal life. She sometimes struggles with the negative feelings she harbors toward her brother - who she often feels forced to take care of - but she is working through these emotions.
January 19th, 2001: Beatrice is in math class when a counselor calls her into the hallway to meet with some police officers that came to see her. The police officers tell her that both her parents were found dead, murdered by a mugger that has yet to be found. The emotions of this event unlock her powers and she sends out a shockwave of sadness. She has little recollection of this day, but all of the people around her began to openly cry in the hallway. This stops within a few seconds and the police officers take her to the station. She sits with her brother and a CPS worker who tells them they can go home, pack their things, and then go with her to St. Agnes Orphanage.
October, 2001: Beatrice and her brother, who already had a tense relationship, begin to grow apart in the orphanage. He distances himself from her and she begins to research what she needs to do to get emancipated. By the end of the month, she is balancing two jobs and all of her schoolwork. She gets the emancipation process started so she can leave the orphanage.
Late August, 2002: Beatrice is granted legal emancipation and she packs her things before saying goodbye to her brother. She tells him that she will try to help him, but he gets furious with her and tells her to leave. Despite their tense relationship, this hurts her and she leaves the orphanage and her brother for the last time.
September, 2002: Beatrice lives in and out of hotels for several weeks after she moves out of the orphanage. Eventually, she is able to find a tiny apartment in Hell’s Kitchen and moves in there on her own. Now out of the orphanage, Beatrice turns to drinking to cope with her turbulent circumstances. She manages to get a fake ID from the less-savory people living in her apartment complex.
June, 2004: Beatrice is able to graduate as salutatorian from her high school after many years of struggling and hard work. She gets a third job over the summer and works every hour of the day in an attempt to save up for college. Her struggles with alcoholism continue, but she is very good at hiding it and the people around her are none the wiser.
Part 3 - Toxic Relationships
September, 2004: Beatrice starts studying criminal justice at Pace University, something she has wanted to do ever since her parents were murdered. Their deaths were never solved and that had a lasting effect on her. She quits her third job a few weeks into the school year and manages her first two jobs, as well as all her coursework.
November 20th, 2005: Beatrice starts dating a fellow classmate of hers named Nathan Moore. Their relationship starts off happy and, for the first few months, Beatrice feels like she’s gotten back some of that stability and love that she so desperately craves. She quits one of her jobs, leaving her with only one to worry about.
August, 2006: Nathan pressures Beatrice into joining him on a weekend trip before the school year starts. It’s a weekend full of partying and drinking, which Beatrice enjoys, but definitely should not be taking part in. At the end of the trip, Nathan coerces Beatrice into taking some sort of drug that he won’t describe. This triggers her abilities and an odd sense of giddiness passes through the room. Beatrice is drunk and high out of her mind by the time Nathan takes her back to her apartment. He leaves her there to deal with it herself.
October, 2006: Their relationship becomes an extremely toxic cycle of Nathan enabling her addictions and sleeping with her before dropping her off at her apartment to deal with the consequences on her own. Beatrice thinks she’s in love, but she really just loves the high and, deep down, she knows Nathan is just using her. He doesn’t actually care about her.
December 31st, 2006: At a New Year’s Eve party, Nathan once again gets Beatrice drunk and takes her into a back room at the party. He starts undressing her, but Beatrice tries to tell him she just wants to go back to the party. When he doesn’t stop, she unintentionally uses her powers to make him stop. She leaves the room and Nathan chases after her when he finally comes back to his senses. He’s furious and curses at her while she tries to find her way to the door. The people at the party keep Nathan inside while Beatrice flags down a cab and goes home. She wakes up to a dozen apology texts and voicemails from Nathan, but she deletes them all.
January, 2007: Beatrice attends her first addiction meeting where she sits at the back of the room and listens to everybody else’s stories. She doesn’t work up the nerve to speak, but she does talk to one of the sponsors that’s there. She privately explains her situation and the sponsor gives her some resources before inviting her to the next meeting. She attends several meetings throughout the month before feeling confident enough to share her story with the group.
February, 2007: Beatrice throws away every single bottle of alcohol in her apartment and flushes all of the drugs that Nathan gave her as gifts. Although she wasn’t failing before, she still pushes herself into her schoolwork and tries to do even better. School becomes her new addiction, but she doesn’t realize this for several months.
November, 2007: Beatrice passes out from exhaustion on her way to one of her classes. When she wakes up, her doctor tells her that it was stress induced and then recommends that she start talking to somebody. She gets referred to a therapist a few days later and she starts attending therapy sessions.
January, 2008: Beatrice is now balancing schoolwork, therapy sessions, addiction meetings, and the blossoming of her new abilities. She has slowly started to become aware of them, but it isn’t until now that she starts trying to use her powers on purpose. It isn’t all good things, however, as she has a slip-up this month and gets drunk one weekend at a party.
April, 2008: Beatrice has been able to influence the emotions of other people on command for several months now, but this is the first time she manages to influence somebody’s actions on purpose. She sees Nathan walking across campus one day and wills him to trip onto the concrete. As she watches, he goes completely still and then just tips over onto the ground. She tests this power out on Nathan several more times without his knowing.
Part 4 - Searching for Justice
June, 2008: Beatrice graduates from college and quits her job to join the police academy. Her training starts sometime toward the end of the month. She is still working through her issues with addiction, but she’s been sober for around six months now, so she doesn’t disclose them. She decides that she will only bring it up if they start to affect her training. She never brings it up.
Late December, 2008: After six months of rigorous training, Beatrice graduates from the police academy and officially joins the police force. It feels like she has finally achieved one of her goals, but she still strives for greater things.
February, 2012: After around three years as a police officer, Beatrice becomes a detective. Finally, it feels like Beatrice has reached the end goal of all her hard work. Her parents died without justice, but she feels like she can make things right and find the justice and the closure that she never got as a child.
May, 2012: Beatrice is home when the Chitauri descend on New York and the Avengers begin fighting off the aliens. She immediately runs out into the street and starts helping citizens out of the wreckage so that they can get to safety. Her neighbors try to get her to come with them, but she refuses to leave until she’s gotten everybody out. She starts going to people one by one in an attempt to prevent anybody getting hurt, but realizes that is taking too long. She uses her powers to influence everyone within a radius of her. It’s the hardest thing she’s done, but she manages to first instill peace in their minds and then slowly influence them to get to safety. She does this two or three more times before blood starts pouring out of her nose and she passes out on the sidewalk. She wakes up hours later in a hospital room being looked over by a kind nurse.
April, 2013: James Wesley bribes two NYPD detectives to work for Wilson Fisk and look the other way when he breaks the law. This all happens under the noses of everyone else in the NYPD, including Beatrice.
June, 2014: Beatrice meets Matt Murdock for the first time in the courthouse where he’s working on a case for Landman and Zack. They have a brief conversation passing in the hallway when they realize they are going to be on opposing sides of the same case. Beatrice wishes him good luck as they enter the courtroom together.
October, 2014: Beatrice runs into Matt on the street again and asks him about his work at Landman and Zack after she greets him. He tells her about his decision to start his own firm with a friend of his and she, once again, gives him a genuine wish of good luck before they part ways.
Part 5 - The Vigilante Issue
January, 2015: Beatrice starts seeing newspaper articles about the mysterious masked man running around the city. She also hears stories from her coworkers who’ve seen the man in person. She is skeptical of him and publicly discusses her hatred of the vigilante with any coworker that will listen to her. When the bombing occurs and blame is placed on the vigilante, her hatred for him grows.
Late February, 2015: Wilson Fisk’s crimes and his manipulation of the police department are revealed and Beatrice’s entire worldview begins to shift. She starts to lose faith that she can actually achieve the justice that she seeks by just working as a detective. Learning the truth about the man in the mask, who local newspapers have started to call “Daredevil,” also makes her opinion about him shift. She starts to respect what he does instead of hating him.
Early March, 2015: After the realizations of the past month, Beatrice goes to a bar and buys herself a drink. She’s staring at the full glass when Matt Murdock shows up at the same bar. He happens to take a seat next to her and, recognizing him from before, she greets him. After she introduces herself, he remembers her and returns the greeting. He asks her what she’s doing and she explains that she’s sober, but that she had a small break in her composure. She tells him that she’s still deciding if she should take her drink or not. Matt takes the drink from her and tells the bartender to get her a soda. She thanks him and the two start up a friendly conversation. At the end of the night, they exchange numbers and plan to meet up again, even if it’s just for another friendly conversation.
Late March, 2015: Beatrice and Matt go out for coffee several times as friends, something that Beatrice starts to really look forward to. His warm, accepting friendship is something that she has never really experienced and she enjoys it wholeheartedly. He seems to expect nothing of her besides her presence and her friendship in return, and that’s comforting to Beatrice. It isn’t until they’ve gone out as friends and gotten to know each other a bit more that she starts to develop feelings for him. She worries that he won’t feel the same, so she doesn’t say anything, but that isn’t something that she really has to worry about in the long-run because Matt ends up feeling the same.
April, 2015: At the end of one of their coffee meet-ups, Matt asks Beatrice out on their official first date. She immediately accept and the two go out to get dinner together a few days later. Throughout the month, they go on several other dates together and start to learn more about each other. At the end of their fourth date, Beatrice briefly explains to Matt her hesitancy to get into a relationship. She doesn’t explain why and he doesn’t ask. He simply tells her that they can take this as slow as they need to. He’s explains that he’s here because he enjoys her company and the rest can come later.
May, 2015: Beatrice is returning from work one day when a man that she once arrested corners her. She is about to try and use her powers to stop him when Daredevil appears. He knocks the man out and then makes sure that Beatrice is okay. He lingers for a moment before leaving and Beatrice watches him disappear up the side of the building.
Part 6 - Becoming Vertigo
June, 2015: Inspired by the work that Daredevil is doing in Hell’s Kitchen, Beatrice comes to the conclusion that she wants to do the same. She dons a makeshift costume, made of nothing more than a black hoodie, pants, a pair of boots, and an old eye mask, and goes out on the streets. She starts using her powers to stop muggings and other low-level crimes. Several weeks after she starts going out, the newspapers start calling her Vertigo. Despite the feelings of accomplishment that it starts to bring her, she still struggles with guilt over what she’s doing.
July, 2015: Out as Vertigo one evening, Beatrice spots Matt getting cornered in an alleyway by a man with a knife. She swoops in and uses her abilities to carefully guide the man out of the alley. Once she’s sure that Matt is safe, she leaves to continue her patrol through the city.
Early August, 2015: On a date with Matt, they somehow get on the topic of vigilantism. Hearing Matt support her opinions on the subject helps drive away some of her feelings of guilt and it has a huge emotional impact on her. She starts crying and Matt offers to take her back to his apartment for a more private place to calm down. Through tears, she agrees and they head to his apartment. She tries to calm herself down and Matt intends to step out, but she asks him to stay. He sits with her on the couch until she’s stopped crying. When she’s done, he asks if she’s okay and, as if she’s just had a realization, she tells him that she wants to be his girlfriend. Matt kisses her on the head, says that he would love that, and the two spend the night on the couch.
Late August, 2015: Beatrice goes on her first date with Matt since their emotional conversation a few days ago. He takes her on a walk through Central Park and tells her about his father and the accident. Beatrice opens up more about her struggles with addiction and briefly mentions her previous relationship. They sit on a bench together and start talking about their relationship. Beatrice tells Matt how much she cares about him and they share their first kiss. Matt walks her back to her apartment and gives her a spare key to his apartment.
Early October, 2015: Vertigo and Daredevil run into each other for the first time when they end up stumbling upon the same kidnapping attempt. They work together long enough to stop the kidnapping and then go their separate ways. Beatrice is impressed by him, but Matt feels a bit like she’s stepping on his toes. He worries that this new vigilante is just going to get in his way.
Late October, 2015: When the Kitchen Irish are massacred, Beatrice is put on the case and she’s at the crime scene when Matt and Foggy show up. The two of them haven’t made their relationship public yet, but Matt greets her with a kiss on the cheek. She then passes them off to Brett Mahoney so she can finish going through the crime scene. She’s so busy working the case, and so unwilling to risk her job, that she has no time to go out as Vertigo. She’s off-duty when Frank Castle blasts his way into Metro-General, but she gets a strange call from Matt the next day. He calls out her name and then the call drops, which has her rushing over to his apartment. She goes inside and finds Matt curled up on the ground. She wraps her arms around him and waits for him to calm down. He can tell it’s her from her heartbeat, so he manages to calm himself and sit with her until his hearing slowly returns. Karen knocks at the door just as Beatrice is helping Matt get up off the ground. Beatrice makes sure that he’s okay and then says she’ll step into his room to let the two have a private conversation. When Karen leaves, Beatrice checks with Matt again. He says he’s fine and tells her that she doesn’t have to stay with him. She’s curious, and maybe suspicious, about what happened, but doesn’t press him and heads home.
Early November, 2015: With Frank Castle finally captured, Beatrice gets a break from the case and listens to Brett Mahoney tell her the truth about Frank’s capture. He tells her not to tell anyone else that it was actually Daredevil and she promises she won’t. Later that day, Foggy, Karen, and Matt are celebrating at Josie’s when Foggy asks about Beatrice. Matt doesn’t say much, but Foggy asks him to invite her and so he does. Beatrice shows up at the bar and introduces herself to everyone. Leaving the bar, Matt tells Beatrice about Elektra and how she’s come back into his life. He wants to make sure that she knows he doesn’t love Elektra anymore and Beatrice says she believes him. Beatrice continues to go out as Vertigo, although she still targets very small crimes and low-level criminals for the time being. Beatrice gives Matt space to deal with Elektra and Frank Castle’s case.
Part 7 - Secrets Revealed
Late November, 2015: Beatrice shows up at Matt’s apartment to check up on him just after Matt’s argument with Elektra. She finds Matt on the couch, still weak but recovering from a poisoned arrow. She asks him about what happened and Matt, still shaken from his argument and tired of keeping secrets, tells her to check the trunk in his room. When she finds the Daredevil suit, she starts laughing and goes back to a surprised Matt. She kisses him and tells him the truth about her being Vertigo. After the shock settles, he tells her that he needs to go into the office, but that they can discuss this later. She returns to her apartment and doesn’t hear from Matt until the next evening. He asks her to come over and she sits with him while he tells her about the fight at the Farm, fighting the Hand at Metro-General, and his argument with Foggy. She stays the night with him before they both have to leave the following morning. While Matt is out fighting Castle and then Elektra, Beatrice returns to work. She helps out on the case at Pier 81 where the Blacksmith’s ship was destroyed by Castle. Returning from working on the case, the Hand kidnaps her and puts her in a van full of other people Daredevil has rescued. Daredevil saves the hostages and gets Beatrice to safety. She watches him and Elektra fight the Hand on the rooftop, but decides to focus on helping the other hostages. Beatrice goes back to Matt’s apartment and waits for him to return. She comforts him when he describes Elektra’s death. She isn’t jealous, she believes him when he says he hasn’t loved her in a long time. She can also sense that he’s telling the truth.
December, 2015: Matt tells Beatrice that he is leaving Daredevil behind and she supports him in his decision. She tells him that Vertigo only ever existed because she believed in what he did and that she cares more about him than her identity as Vertigo. She stops going out as a vigilante and her relationship with Matt continues. She finally opens up to him about her relationship in college and he comforts her through the emotional conversation.
February, 2016: On a Valentine’s Day date, Matt asks Beatrice to move in with him and she accepts. They go back to her apartment to start packing up her things. While helping her pack her things, Matt finds a small box and asks what’s in it. Beatrice admits that it contains her Declaration of Emancipation and her first Emancipated ID from when she was a teenager. She opens up about the death of her parents - she only briefly talked about it before - and how she got emancipated so she wouldn’t have to live in the St. Agnes Orphanage. Matt comments about how they were probably in the orphanage around the same time and might have crossed paths.
Part 8 - Defenders
Early May, 2016: Beatrice starts to feel guilt about not going out as Vertigo and, unbeknownst to her, Matt starts to feel the same. He talks to Father Lantom about it, but Beatrice keeps these emotions internalized. She does track down Melvin Potter, who Matt told her about, and has him make her a suit, just in case she decides to go out as Vertigo again. Days later, when an earthquake hits New York, Beatrice and Matt are in different locations when they both decide to return to vigilantism. They meet back at their apartment and reveal this to each other before deciding to work together. Beatrice and Matt go to Midland Circle, both without their suits. They fight off the Hand with the others and then go to the Royal Dragon together. Beatrice keeps her face mask on following Matt’s lead and Jessica mocks them both. When Jessica convinces Matt to remove his mask, Beatrice sees no reason to keep hiding either and removes her mask. She sticks to the background when Stick appears and the group argues among themselves. A resurrected Elektra appears with the Hand and a fight breaks out. After the fight and Sowande’s interrogation, Beatrice stays at the hideout with Stick to allow the rest of the group to check in on their loved ones at the precinct. The group returns, Stick kills Sowande, and they get into a fight with Danny Rand. Beatrice heads out with Matt and Jessica to get more information about Midland Circle. She returns with them to the hideout and is the last to be knocked out by Elektra when she attacks. She wakes up in the precinct being questioned about the previous situation. The group breaks out of the precinct, Matt retrieves his suit from Foggy, and Beatrice gets her suit from Melvin. They travel to Midland Circle, a fight breaks out, and Beatrice is taken hostage by Elektra. Matt tells the group to leave while he gets Beatrice back. As the explosions begin, Matt fights off Elektra and tries to get back the incapacitated Beatrice. He knocks Elektra out and cradles Beatrice as she starts to wake up amidst the collapsing building. They are caught in the collapse together.
Mid- to Late May, 2016: They both get caught in the water main and are swept out onto the road. Beatrice is not nearly as injured as Matt, but she stays with him until help arrives. They are both taken to Clinton Church where their wounds are tended to. In a few days, she has regained her strength and leaves the church, promising to keep it a secret that Matt is being kept there. She contacts Foggy, who helps with her legal troubles, and then returns to work. She claims that she was found alone in the wreckage and says nothing about what actually happened. Melvin repairs her suit and she starts going out as Vertigo as soon as she feels well enough. She sends Matt letters to read when he wakes up, but doesn’t visit him to make sure that his presence remains a secret.
June, 2016: Beatrice is informed that Matt has finally woken up and that he is asking about her. She tells them to give him her letters and to explain why she can’t visit him yet. She is distraught that she can’t help him and finally breaks several weeks after he wakes up. She goes to the church under the pretense of attending a service and briefly visits Matt who expresses his great appreciation for her showing up. She tells him it’s safer if she spaces out her visits, but that she will continue sending him letters on the weeks that she isn’t able to come see him.
November, 2016: The nuns tell Matt that, since he has started to recover, he should consider leaving soon, but he tells them he has nowhere to go. He refuses to become a burden on Beatrice any more than he already has, so he doesn’t bring this up with her. Despite this, her patience never wavers and she continues to visit him ever so often. She is simply waiting for the day that he finally returns home and lets her help him through his recovery. Outside of her visits, she continues her normal life. She works at the precinct, goes out as Vertigo, and plays the part of a grieving girlfriend among the few people that know Matt is gone.
March, 2017: After several months of visits, Matt gets frustrated with his slow recovery and tells Beatrice to move on with her life. He believes that he’s just holding her back and they get into an emotional argument. Beatrice insists that she will wait for him until he’s ready to home home. He feels like a burden and insists that she should leave him for her own good, but she refuses. However, she does tell him that she understands the trauma he’s gone through and his need for space. She says that she won’t visit him for the next few months if that’s what he needs. She continues to send him letters that he reads but rarely responds to. She appreciates his occasional responses nonetheless.
Part 9 - Daredevil Returns
September, 2017: Matt sends Beatrice a letter saying that he worries his life will be more useful if he dies as Daredevil than it will be to live as Matthew Murdock, but that he will stick around for her. He tells her that he is starting to feel better and that he would like her to visit him, if she still wants him, but that he understands if she’s moved on. Beatrice shows up the next day and spends the evening with him simply listening to what he needs to get off his chest. She kisses him goodbye and says she will wait for him because she knows that he is going to get better, no matter how long it takes.
October, 2017: Beatrice, who has become in-tuned with Matt’s emotional aura, senses him leaving the church one evening. She follows, but stays back and watches him fight off kidnappers. They beat him down, but before she can reveal herself, they run away from police sirens. Beatrice tracks Matt and makes sure he safely returns to the church. Days later, he leaves again and tracks down the kidnappers. He incapacitates them and then goes to the Presidential Hotel to find Fisk. He thinks he’s hiding from Beatrice, but she’s been tracking him the entire time. She knows he’s not hiding to hurt her, so she allows him to continue on his own. When Matt returns to the apartment to get a suit, Beatrice is there. He apologizes and says that he still has something to take care of. She reminds him her promise to wait for him and tells him to do what he needs to. He leaves, but she goes to him when she senses an unusual spike. She finds him climbing out of a slowly-sinking car and helps him out of the water to take him back to the apartment. When the FBI raids the apartment, she helps him escape and covers for him with the FBI, claiming he hasn’t been there in weeks. When she gets in contact with him a few days later, he tells her that he plans to turn himself in and he asks her to stay in the safety of the apartment. She is reluctant, but agrees, knowing Matt will be destroyed if anything happens to her. Days later, and her patience wearing thin, she tracks Matt to Clinton Church. She stumbles into his fight against Poindexter and starts getting the parishioners out. Her powers are not strong enough to get Poindexter to stop, but she helps distract him while Matt fights. She knocks Poindexter down, but he runs when she turns to tend to a wounded Matt. She and Matt hide from the FBI in the crypt until they can escape to the rooftops. They meet with Karen and Foggy on the roof to discuss taking down Fisk. Beatrice says she has to go to work to avoid suspicion, but will return the next evening. That day, she is assigned the case of Nadeem’s murder, much to her dismay.
November, 2017: Beatrice decides to continue working the case and contacts Brett Mahoney, realizing she might be more help to Matt on this end of things. When Poindexter initiates his attack on the Presidential Hotel, Beatrice is part of the police team sent to assess the situation. She stands with Karen and Foggy outside the hotel, wondering what Matt is going to do. When the police enter the building, Beatrice goes to work using her abilities to calm the guests and get them safely out of the hotel. The police finally get to Fisk’s room and Beatrice enters with Brett who promptly arrests Fisk. Beatrice catches a glance of Matt heading upstairs and tells Brett she just needs a moment of fresh air. She stands with Matt on the rooftop, the two enjoying each other’s presence in silence before they finally look at each other and meet in a kiss. He thanks her for waiting and she says she would have waited for eternity. They return to the apartment together. A few days later, she goes with Matt to Father Lantom’s funeral. Matt, Beatrice, Karen, and Foggy go out together after the funeral. Foggy proposes “Nelson, Murdock, & Page” which Beatrice jokingly says has the full support of the NYPD. They toast a return to normal life and Matt looks lovingly at Beatrice, who he proposes to days later. She accepts his proposal, finally content with the life she has made for herself.
