Math sucks
Tumblr media
I struggled with math in high school.
Before then, I’d done alright in math. I wasn’t the best, but I could keep up.
That changed freshman year. With a teacher who explained things. Once.
If you didn’t get it the first time, he would (grudgingly) repeat the same explanation. But that was it.
If you needed him to break it down for you. Or to explain it a different way, you were out of luck.
The school found out about it. And sacked him at the end of the year.
But for me, the damage was done. I had convinced myself that I was bad at math. And that math sucked.
With that idea stuck in my head? The rest of my formal education gave me the grades to prove it.
It wasn’t until years later, when my kids started needing need help with their math homework, that I learned the truth. I wasn’t bad at math.
My “I’m bad at math/math sucks” idea? Had no connection to my actual abilities.
I had internalized my experience with an awful teacher. I had convinced myself that I couldn’t do something.
All because I couldn’t get it perfect on the first try.
When all I actually needed was a better/different explanation to help me get it.
Maybe it wasn’t math for you. But a lot of us can tell a similar story. Whether it happened with a subject in school, or sports, or music, or a job, or a relationship. It’s a trap that is all too easy to fall into.
It’s one of those things that only becomes obvious with the awful clarity of hindsight. And one that can take years to dig out of.
It’s a stark contrast to what we see it in today’s Gospel.
Where Jesus is explaining His love and care for people in an extended metaphor. But the people He’s speaking to just aren’t getting it.
The best part? What happens next.
Unlike my awful math teacher, Jesus doesn’t grudgingly repeat the same explanation. Or belittle them for not getting it perfect on the first try.
Instead (in a move that reveals the heart of God), Jesus gives them a different explanation. More direct, more obvious.
If you read the rest of the chapter, they keep struggling. But Jesus doesn’t give up. Jesus understands where they are struggling. And keeps working with them. Until they get it.
It’s a moment that reveals a lot about God.
That if you and I don’t get it perfect on the first try, that won’t stop God. God will keep working with you. And working with you. Until you get it.
Because God loves you too much to quit.

Max: I heard you’re into bad girls, Rachel. Luckily for you, I’m bad at every social interaction I’m in AND tenth grade geometry.
Rachel:
Rachel: Okay, first of all I’m into dorks. Second of all, why was that last one so specific?

day 16: stage
“By the way, I remember. You were late for the clocktower,” Doc suddenly remarked as he and Marty were packing their things to leave that damn parking lot. “What happened that held you back?”
The boy looked away. “Uhm, something important.”
Emmett raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t buying it.
“Okay, fine,” Marty admitted, “I went up to the stage because their guitar player had injured his hand. And I had to play something fresh before I left.”
“You mean you played a song from the future?!”
Marty grinned. This was exactly the reaction he’d expected.
“Only three years early, Doc.”

If she was the grass that grows green,
I know I would not understand why.
And if she were the wind beneath wings,
Who am I to tell you how?
Yet still,
I’d lay forever among her fields
And dream of flying.

Random PSA shill for the subscriptions in cybird games, friends. At least the ones in Ikepri and Ikegen, since they operate the exact same (god plz why can't we have these in ikevamp or Ikesen etc)
Just in case anyone doesn't know what these are - for $4.99 USD (or ¥480/$3.99 USD on the JP versions as it works out for me) charged every 30 days, you get the following over the course of every 10 days when you log in:
Coins/Gold - 5k (1k x 5)
Story ticket - 1
Gacha token - 1
Stamina item (+100) - 1
Intimacy points item (+500) - 1
Story points item (+1/+1) - 1
Doesn't look super exciting on the surface there, I know. But stick with me... because if you KEEP the sub, things change.
On every repeat of the 10 day cycle, it bumps up through 6 stages. So starting on day 51, when you've reached Stage 6 and have plateaued there, you're getting this every 10 days:
Coins: 60k (12k x 5)
Story tickets: 3
Gacha tokens: 3
Stamina items (+100): 3
Intimacy Point items (+500): 3
Story point items (+1/+1): 3
Which means that by the time you reach your third sub payment of $4.99, that gets you this every single month:
Coins: 180k
Story tickets: 9
Gacha tokens: 9
Stamina items (+100): 9
Intimacy Point items (+500): 9
Story point items (+1/+1): 9
On top of all this, there are additional continuing sub bonuses as long as the subscription stays active.
1st month: Gacha token x 5
2nd month: 4* gacha token
3rd month: 5* gacha token
And that three month bonus cycle repeats as well. So let's just, for numbers sake, break this down over a whole year. I've had my subs for a long time, so I'm past the ramping up stage, and let's see what I get for my money now in my English Ikepri (I'll use the English since it's more expensive)
Annual Cost: $4.99 x 12 = $59.88 (for JP this comes out to $47.88)
Coins/Gold - 2,160,000
Story tickets - 108
Standard Gacha tokens - 128
4* Standard Gacha tokens - 4
5* Standard Gacha tokens - 4
Stamina items (+100) - 108
Intimacy Point items (+500) - 108
Story point items (+1/+1) - 108
The ONLY gripe I have with this is that the gacha tokens in Ikepri are only good in the standard gacha. In Ikegen there is only one type of basic gacha token, just like Ikevamp etc, so the value is even more impressive (lthough the 4* and 5* monthly bonus tokens are only standard gacha). However, given the importance of having high value cards for each prince in the upcoming Ikepri birthday systems, that still isn't something to entirely turn your nose up at.
Also, that said, the value of the unexpiring story tickets (even if you paid $60 for JUST the 108 story tickets OR stamina, that's insane, only $0.55 an item) and the unexpiring stamina items alone makes this more than worthwhile to me...not to mention the nice cushion of story point items and intimacy if I want to just brute force my way through new routes. And if you prefer to play as free-to-play as possible, that pot of gold you'll build up helps with the shitty friend system in Ikepri and with buying you those extra hearts during kiss/collection events. You can also throw gold at the gold gacha and sometimes net yourself a sweet bit of stamina or diamonds or a story ticket, so there's some value in it there too.
TL;DR - if you can swing the cost of a decent latte once a month, it's more than worth setting up and keeping the sub. Net yourself some cheap swag, and send cybird a bit of love for the work they do.
