ResearchAssociate in Phylogenetic Comparative Analysis School of Environmental Sciences We are looking to appoint a Research Associate in phylogenetic comparative analysis of parental care, who has or is presently working towards completingtheir PhD in Biology or relateddisciplines. The post is funded by the University of Hull. The RA will be a member of the EvolutionaryComparative Ecology Group (http://bit.ly/2okw5Xn) led by DrIsabella Capellini (http://bit.ly/2os5G7m)that investigates fundamental questions on the evolution of animal diversityusing state of the art phylogenetic comparative approaches, and offers adynamic research environment in which the RA can further develop their skills.The successful applicant will be a core member of the ‘Parental Care’ cluster includingDr James Gilbert, Dr Lesley Morrell and 2 PhD students, with whom the RA isexpected to work closely. Within the School, the successful applicant will alsobenefit from a rich and diverse research environment that includes the Ecologyand Environmental Change Group, and the Evolutionary Biology Group. This project extends our past work inmammals (West & Capellini 2016 NatureCommunications) to amphibians and fish. The RA will compile a large datasetof parental care behaviours in amphibians and fish, lead the analysis usingphylogenetic comparative methods to answer questions on the evolution of femaleand male uniparental care, and draft manuscripts. Depending on the RA’s skillsand interest, we may also investigate the project’s questions with mathematicalmodeling approaches. Essential: PhDin biology or related discipline near completion; knowledge of modernphylogenetic comparative methods, strong quantitative skills, evidence of workof publishable quality, excellent oral and written communication skills,demonstrable ability to work as an effective team member, and be reliable,self-motivated and well organized. Desirable: PhDin biology or related discipline, experience with phylogenetic comparativemethods, experience in testing hypotheses on phenotypic evolution acrossspecies, strong publication record, experience with R.
