I did a bit of de novo genome assembly way, way back in the day which I have never been able to use professionally because my PI refused to spend $2000 more on getting new read depth. He had ordered the reads before actually learning anything about the pipeline and only about half of the libraries he had ordered were usable in any given pipeline, see. (Some had been for older assembly methods and others had been for newer ones, basically.)
Rather than find the money to fucking get me the reads to do it right, he heard about an open source project called RACA that was some dude's dissertation arguing that you COULD use some of the worthless libraries to fill in the gaps of the assembly and get a functional genome out of it. I spent two years trying to move massive quantities of data through that fuckhead's pipeline on the campus supercomputer to get the assembled genome out, and then I got to the end and found there was no output as fastq files or ant other format recognizable to me.
(Give me a break, I was 23 and had also been frantically learning acoustic analysis, basic electrical engineering, and technical equipment maintenance in the two years since I had started learning to code. Plus I was figuring out what I wanted my dissertation to be. I'd never grappled with anything more complicated than our home-written library of matlab acoustic analysis before, and it simply hadn't occurred to me that anyone would publish a non-functional pipeline to achieve a goal quickly anyone verifying that anyone else had done anything yet.)
Anyway, eventually he collaborated with someone else who ponied up $2000 and a postdoc to get new reads. My name was not on the paper, so that's two years of my life developing a particular and fairly unique skill set that I will almost certainly never use.
In retrospect it's less surprising than you might think that the PhD took eight years and absolutely shattered my confidence.
And the best part is that it was just about impossible to predict at the time that shit would go quite this bad, except that some people handle power well when they're stressed and some people maintain a strong layer of cognitive dissonance over their knowledge of power such that it's never real enough to be responsible about but always real enough to win a dispute.
Anyway I think every student should have two advisors so that everyone in the department should have to immediately know about it when a PI is floundering and have a strong direct incentive to do something about it. A LOT of my problems could have been fixed with one look with a gimlet eye from a senior, more experienced researcher being not impressed at a student under their supervision running on an endless treadmill to nothing. Frankly a lot of my problems could have been solved if my mentor had formal training or literally any supervision that could deliver metrics faster than "how close am I to my previous mentees?"
I know a lot of dual advised students wind up in a tug of war between two advisors, but like: that's the point. If one of them turns out to be insane and malicious then a) the students all have clear lines to bail, b) the other ones all realize quickly that bailing out the chaos and career damage of someone who is fucking it up is way more work than resolving the problem, and c) the one with more tethers to reality has a way bigger likelihood of formally retaining the student when and if a third party has to examine the contract.
Just. It was such a fucking waste. And not because anyone necessarily wanted it to be wasteful, either, or any malice, but because I was... mm, I think the fifth PhD student in that lab and that's actually not that many to be learning on. Systems that set you up to play with decades of people's lives should have more fail-safes and places for people to learn before they get to be the sole director of someone else's career for five fucking years, not less. And yet!

Ok a few questions...
1st - the little reaction character you draw for every ask is so cute have u learnt to draw or just an amateur? I mean I hardly am able to draw such quick sketches my work takes days to complete
2nd - your major is so much superior and brainy it hurts my brain ( as a med student I find tech people really brainy) and currently I am trying to do some research on Ai in med how shd I approach that ? At an under grad level where I am hardly having any independent clinical practice and any good knowledge on Ai? I mean I do try studying it but I won't ever be at par with proper Ai studies at tech institutes. Pls help.

1) As you might have guessed from my STEM academic background, art is mostly a hobby for me and I’ve never actually been professionally trained or taken lessons for it :) most of what I know comes from YouTube videos and books and stuff, accumulated over,,,,, I think 13 years now of drawing?? I’m lucky my parents really encouraged me to draw and kept nurturing that interest in me when I was young, haha
These quick sketches are actually all done on my notes app and are only so quick because going fast was the only way to get the nice line weight I wanted so I trained it up so I could do these in a minute or less :) if you dig up my oldest ask response doodles though you can definitely see where I started from haha
2) If you’re looking into the basics of machine learning theory at the undergrad level, Caltech has the entire introductory course available for free on YouTube! I don’t know if it’s the best way to learn but it’s pretty alright from what I remember? What you need will depends a lot on the scope of what research you’re doing, I think. AI in the loosest sense is a thing of data organization and prediction based on some funky math stuff. If you need help actually implementing it you might need some other online tutorial but since most of these models are already prebuilt on things like PyTorch and matlab you generally don’t actually need to thoroughly know the math background for it I think. (I think especially matlab has nice documentation so it’s especially easy to do your first implementation of models there but uhh take that with a grain of salt)
Otherwise, if you’re specifically researching the ways it interfaces with medicine, I’d recommend going to Google scholar and searching up academic journals and articles about it. If the jargon is a bit much, you can look up articles elsewhere like in the general news and then look at the articles from there. If you have a mentor for research, as well, I would definitely recommend asking them for literature to review. Happy researching!

Have officially been bullied (affectionate) into "auditing" the biomedical engineering class that our retired (world famous) doctor helps run. He is like my grandpa, this man is grouchy and we are mean to each other in a familiar manner. I need to take advantage of this man's wealth of knowledge and connections before he dies, he's very old and when he does die I will miss him so terribly. "How does knowing [redacted] go? He is famous, he helped develop the machine we use every day, his name is on so many of our textbooks... That must be so cool!" I yell at him when he is too mean and then he yells at me when the computer isn't working right and sometimes I buy him food from the cafeteria and then he makes fun of me for going to the wrong school. So.... you know it's good I guess?
The class is run by him, a doctor I helped train (this is still freaky as hell), and two of the college research guys, one of whom I tried to go open water swimming in a river with once and almost drowned (not really but I could have), and now mostly he just shares pictures of the dog shelter volunteering he does with me. Basically just a panel of old white men who are visionaries in their fields and whatever.
I have no idea what my responsibilities will be, besides teaching the biomedical engineering students about anatomy and how a clinic/hospital works and learning MATLAB. I don't think I'm required to do much besides ~open my mind~ so I can learn about how ultrasound works really good, which I can do. Apparently color doppler is NOT actually doppler and we learn what it actually is in this class. Idk. It should be fun and will look great on my resume. Only once a week, thank god, and ends before my big trips.
Retired Doc was like "I can't believe no sonographers are taking the class this year. It should be required to take the class. The death of critical thinking and teamwork is upon us I cannot believe how we have fallen. Anyway you especially should take this class."
Research Guy "oh yeah especially if you like education! We rely on the sonographers to give the biomedical engineering students an idea of the actual practical applications of their field, they really don't get a lot of that in their classes so it can be difficult for them to understand the impact they'll be making in the future"
Me (a sucker for being complimented and aware that being singled out like this is an indicator that I am thought highly of by a well respected man in my field)... FUCK. Ok fine. I thought we had no more slots left but I'll talk to the boss about it.

Mere liye pyaar ka matlab ho tum! - Part 4
Radhe & Tamanna from Bandish Bandits
So, it's finally time to talk about the climax of season 2 episode 7 titled Bandish Bandits. The scene that had me so jazzed that it got me to watch this show in the first place. A scene that has been discussed endlessly in Youtube comments without any nuance.
But I have nothing but nuance, I have made three posts discussing the buildup to this scene and the state of Radhe & Tamanna's relationship before the competition starts. Now let's talk about the Jugalbandi moment in exhaustive detail.
First of all, Tamanna was completely dominating the song and the round. She was winning. It was so obvious to see how far she had come because she was going head to head with so many classically trained singers and coming on top. Especially considering how nervous Radhe makes her it was amazing to see her absolutely floor her performance.
But while Radhe is on the back foot for most of the performance it is his mother who is really helping him every time he seems to get lost watching Tamanna perform. On multiple occasions, his family brings his focus back to the rhythm of the song. If it was only Tamanna versus Radhe, Tamanna would wind this round but in a realistic assessment of pitting Royalty Free against Rathod Gharana, the Rathod Gharana would win because as a team they are able to overcome every challenge Tamanna presents and she is keeping everyone on their toes singlehandedly.
Secondly, it is amazing to see how starstruck Radhe is for most of the song. He did say he was Tamanna's biggest fan and he proved that till Tamanna starts singing Sajan Bin he has to be brought to attention at least twice and on top of that he is not only starstruck but very much lovestruck as well.
This is the point where we inspect the freaking lyrics of this song for having committed the crime of being blatant as fuck. The parts Tamanna sings are in purple while Radhe's parts are in blue. Any parts not in these two colours are primarily being sung by someone else (Mohini gets her own colour which is pink).
So, as I analyse this scene which I have watched too many goddamn times for my sanity I am coming to realise this song is very complicated with multiple singers and so many vocalizations that trying to get the lyrics down has been a struggle. The lyrics as they appear below are a gross simplification for the purpose of this post.
How to Feel Alive When My Soul is Dying Inside?
Baby, It’s A Darker Time
Baby, Come and Grab My Soul
My Heart is Quite Inside
I want you to be by my side.
Tamanna begins the song by directly singing to Radhe. Radhe meanwhile is busy being a fanboy.
Garaj Garajne Laga Yeh, Tarasta Mann Su mera, Ye Mann Su mera
Piya Ka Mann Aaj Raz Kholne Laga Re
[Vocalizations]
Na Jane Kaisi Yeh Bala Hai
Har Pal Teri Yadon Mein Jala Hai
Fir Bhi Nazar Na Tu Aa Aa Aa Aaye,
Kyun Sata Aa Aa Aaye
Na Jane Kaisi Yeh Bala Hai
Har Pal Teri Yadon Mein Jala Hai
Fir Bhi Nazar Na Tu Aa Aa Aa Aaye,
Kyun Sata Aa Aa Aa Aye
Radhe is still in fanboy mode.
Khali Sa Mann Yeh Mera, Aake Tu Dekh Zara
Tujhko Pukare Sunn Le Zara, Tu Ghar Aa
Tamanna is back to singing to Radhe. This time while standing directly in front of him.
Tu Ghar Aa mahi
I’m waiting for you.
O Bhatka Rahi
Maaahhiii
I’m waiting for you.
Tamanna is literally singing 'I'm waiting for you' standing in front of Radhe and I think at this point he starts to understand that she is singing for him.
[Vocalizations]
Sajan Tora Take Rasta, Ratiya Beeti Jaye
Haye Ratiya Beeti Jaye
Time for Radhe to play an Uno reverse card and sing to Tamanna this time.
Imma See the Light I’m Lost In Darkest Time
It’s Growing Up Inside
You’re the One to trap my soul
You’re the One who Will Revive
I want you to be by my side
The fact that Tamanna turns around to face Radhe when she starts singing 'You're the one to trap my soul' is so fucking poetic.
Don’t Wanna Lose You Now, You Know I’m Alone
The Pain Is Taking My Skin and Bones
You Gotta Come and Heal It
You Gotta Come And Steal The Pain
I’m Waiting For You
We already know she was thinking of Radhe the first time she sang these lyrics and now she is singing those words to him. At this point, Radhe is definitely lovestruck and this is when his band comes to the rescue.
Ho Kaali Si Ghata Chhaye
Umad Ghumad Har Kali Pe
Aaye Hain Jaise Bhanwar Bhanwar
Ab Kohra Kohra Chhaye Raha
Mohini trying to bolster Radhe.
Ho Kaali Si Ghata Chhaye
Umad Ghumad Har Kali Pe
Aaye Hain Jaise Bhanwar Bhanwar
Ab Kohra Kohra Chhaye Raha
Sajan Aaja
Tu Ghar Aa Mahi
Balam Aaja
Oo Bhatka Rahi
Sajan Aaja
Tu Ghar Aa Mahi
Again Tamanna is singing to Radhe and this time Mohini is definitely getting the hint. It is interesting to realise that these two are so hopelessly entangled yet Radhe's family has no idea about his relationship with Tamanna but at this point, Mohini is definitely realising that the Sajan Tamanna is singing of is Radhe. At this point, Radhe actually follows Tamanna into no man's land but he looses this particular round of jugalbandi.
I’m Waiting For You…
Oh, Waiting For You.
Oh, I’m Waiting For You.
Oh, How To Feel Alive? How To Feel Alive?
I’m Waiting For You, Waiting For You.
I’m Waiting For You.
Mohini to the rescue again...
Sajan Moray!
Sajan Moray!
Moray
Moray
Sajan
Sajan moray moray
Moray
Moray
Sajan
Sajan Moray
...but this time Tamanna is matching her beat for beat. I think Radhe is genuinely mindblown to see Tamanna sing with his mother. His brain can't comprehend seeing his two worlds collide this way. At this point, we get a shot of Rajendra and Devendra looking quite bewildered and frankly worried. I wonder if they think they are going to lose to Tamanna.
Sajan Bin Aaye
Sajan Bin Aaye Na
The point where Tamanna starts singing Sajan Bin has interspersed shots of Ayaan and Nandini Ma'am looking worried. I can't quite figure out why she chooses to sing Sajan Bin.
The emotion she has tapped into this whole song makes Sajan Bin a good choice for transitioning into but this song has so much history for the Bandish Bandits and I feel like at this point, things get really difficult to parse out.
Clearly, Tamanna is using her heart a little too much as she transitions into Sajan Bin. This entire song she has let go of the reins on her emotions, Tamanna has always told Radhe that she doesn't think they should be together but that is very much a logical choice, it is also the correct choice but correctness matters little in the fact of emotions and her emotional choice is very much to give in to Radhe.
I feel like at this point as Radhe slowly and steadily realises what Tamanna is trying to say to him via this song, he gets angry. He wants to be with Tamanna, it is Tamanna who is forcing this separation and I think at this point he starts to feel like it's unfair that she gets to sing with these emotions when the choice causing those emotions is her own, unlike his situation and that means that when he sings the next paragraph he goes all out. On second thought, that was a reach on my part and I feel like in this particular moment the simplest explanation is likely the truest. It was about his ego. Radhe's ego which uptil this point has proven disastrous on multiple occasions gets the better of him and he truly can't digest the idea of her being better than him.
Sajan Bin Aaye Na Mohe Nindiya
Rain Bhar Aaye Re Jage Ratiya
Kahe Tu Mohe Sajan Piya Re Dikhe Yeh Nazare Mane Na Apne Akhiyan
Sajan Bin Aaye
[Vocalizations]
I’m Waiting For You
[Vocalizations]
Tu Ghar Aa Mahi
[Vocalizations]
Mahi! Mahi!
[Vocalizations]
I’m Waiting I’m Waiting For You.
I’m Waiting For You.
Oh Ghar Aa Mahi!
This captivating performance ends with the crowd chanting Radhe! Radhe! It's literally Tamanna's worst nightmare come to life! The release of Phas Gaye (Sajan Bin) is what first started to erode Tamanna's self-confidence with every fan pitting Tamanna's musical talent against Radhe's and finding it lacking. And, this is just that on a much bigger platform and it hurts even more because she has worked so hard to get to where she is and she is still found lacking. The fact that Tamanna can rally herself so quickly that she can help her band win the next round is honestly astonishing considering the blow she was dealt but I guess she is in a much better place self-esteem-wise then she was at the end of season 1.
A lot of people in YouTube comments especially were talking about Tamanna going a little too far in singing 'Sajan Bin' and basically injuring Radhe's ego which given Radhe's personality isn't completely out of the realm of possibility. It is a distinct possibility that the idea of Tamanna surpassing him made his ego rear its ugly head. [So, the people in the YouTube comments were on the nose in this instance.]
But the question is - is Radhe wrong? No.
Is Tamanna wrong in blaming Radhe for exploiting a weakness he was intimately aware of? No.
But, she is wrong when she tells Radhe that he was lying when he said that he would happily lose to her because he would, he does. I don't think it is right of Tamanna to expect Radhe to lose to her without putting his best foot forward. I also believe that a lot of what she says in their conversation following this performance is more out of an emotional response than something she actually would have wanted. It also explains why she doesn't hold this against Radhe because I feel she realises that a hollow victory would be worse than defeat. But, given that she has quite literally lived her worst nightmare excuses her state of mind especially because Radhe does, he realises that what happened has been extremely distressing to Tamanna to the point that he has a hard time focusing on his conversation with Ananya.
Also, I saw a braindead opinion talking about how Tamanna disrespected Mohini. She didn't and that is very evident given how Mohini praises Tamanna's performance when the round ends. When she hugs Tamanna, Radhe is again thrown for a loop because I feel like he is literally seeing a dream come true. His mother embraces Tamanna something I don't think he ever gave himself hope to ever see become reality.
In hindsight, I am glad I decided to split these posts up because it would have been impossible to talk so much in-depth in just one post.
My conclusions will have to be in Part 5.
Part One I Part Two I Part Three I Part Four I Conclusion

Pls I too hate Matlab, it just gets on my nerve when the simulations are not millimeter perfect, and Matlab does just that.
As someone who was trained and taught to run all simulations and do all analysis in python (+ pandas, beloved), matlab is akin to a sensory nightmare. Why are ten things screaming at me. Why do i have spreadsheets. What happened to a simple coding environment. Technology has gone too far.

When I was in for mouth surgery, I mentioned to the anaesthetist that I'd trained as a medical statistician. Turned out he'd been doing a stats course too, and rather than counting down from ten, I was slagging off the Matlab Statistics Toolbox until the anaesthesia kicked in mid-rant.
The next thing I was aware of was attempting to say "and I hate how it handles arrays" through a mouthful of cotton wool in the recovery ward.

How to Write a Winning Resume for Mechanical Engineering Jobs
If you’re a mechanical engineering student or recent graduate looking to land your first job, one of the most important tools you’ll need is a strong resume. A resume isn’t just a list of your academic scores or internship details—it’s your personal brochure. And when done right, it can help you stand out in a crowd of applicants.
Here’s how to write a resume that actually works for mechanical engineering roles, especially when you're fresh out of college.
Start with a Clear and Simple Format
Forget flashy templates or complicated layouts. Recruiters, especially in technical fields, prefer resumes that are neat, organized, and easy to read. Stick to a clean structure with clear section headings like:
Contact Information
Career Objective
Education
Skills
Projects
Internships or Work Experience
Certifications (if any)
Extra-Curriculars (optional)
Use a basic font like Arial or Calibri, and avoid colors or graphics. You want your achievements to shine—not your design skills (unless you’re applying for a design-specific job).
Write a Short, Purposeful Career Objective
Your career objective is usually the first thing a recruiter reads, so make it matter. Keep it brief—2–3 lines max. The goal here is to tell them what you're looking for and what you bring to the table.
Example: “Mechanical engineering graduate with strong fundamentals in design, manufacturing, and thermal systems. Looking for an entry-level role where I can apply my skills and contribute to practical solutions.”
Avoid vague terms and focus on clarity. Make sure it aligns with the job you’re applying for.
List Your Education Strategically
Mention your current or most recent qualification first. Include your degree, college name, university, location, and year of completion.
Example: B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering NM Institute of Engineering and Technology (NMIET), Bhubaneswar Affiliated to BPUT | Completed in 2024 | CGPA: 8.2/10
If you studied at one of the top engineering colleges in Odisha, make sure to mention it. Recruiters often recognize reputable institutes and that can work in your favor.
Showcase Your Technical Skills
As a mechanical engineer, companies expect you to have hands-on skills. Create a bullet-point list of your core technical strengths, such as:
AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA
MATLAB, ANSYS
MS Excel (for data analysis)
CNC Programming
Engineering Drawing
Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
Don’t just list everything you've heard of—stick to the tools you’re confident using. Recruiters may test your knowledge during interviews.
Talk About Real Projects You’ve Worked On
Projects tell employers that you can apply what you’ve learned. Even if you haven’t worked in a company yet, your academic projects matter. List 1–2 major projects you worked on and include:
Project Title
Tools/Software Used
Brief Description
Your Role
Example: Project Title: Design and Fabrication of a Portable Hydraulic Jack Tools Used: SolidWorks, MS Excel Description: Designed a compact lifting system for automotive applications. Conducted stress analysis and cost estimation.
If you studied at one of the best private engineering colleges in Odisha, chances are you had access to advanced labs and faculty guidance. Use that experience to build strong, practical projects.
Include Internships or Training Experience
Even a short-term internship can make a big difference. Mention where you trained, what you learned, and what you worked on. Recruiters value industry exposure, no matter how brief.
Example: Intern | Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Jhansi Duration: 6 weeks Summary: Assisted in quality checks of turbine components, observed heat treatment processes, and prepared maintenance logs.
Some colleges like NMIET offer placement support and tie-ups with companies like IBM, Capgemini, and Cognizant. If you’ve had training or project exposure through these industry connections, add it.
Certifications Can Add Extra Weight
Online certifications or workshops related to mechanical software or tools are worth mentioning—especially if they’re from recognized platforms or colleges. Keep this section short and relevant.
Don’t Skip Soft Skills
While mechanical jobs are technical, companies still want engineers who can work in teams and communicate well. Include a short list of soft skills like:
Team Collaboration
Time Management
Analytical Thinking
Communication Skills
Problem Solving
Just make sure you can back these up with examples if asked in an interview.
Avoid Filler Content
Don't pad your resume with unnecessary details. If a hobby or achievement isn’t relevant to the job or doesn’t say something meaningful about you, leave it out. Keep your resume one page long if possible—especially if you’re a fresher.
Final Check: Customize for the Job
Always tweak your resume slightly for each application. If the job posting emphasizes AutoCAD, move that to the top of your skills list. If they need someone for HVAC projects, highlight related coursework or experience. It shows that you’ve read the description carefully and are genuinely interested.
To Wrap Up
A well-made resume doesn’t guarantee a job—but it definitely opens doors. For students studying in places like NMIET or other best private engineering colleges in Odisha, the combination of classroom knowledge and practical exposure can make your resume shine. Use what you’ve learned, be honest, and keep things clear and focused.
The job market can be competitive, but if you present your skills well on paper, you’re already ahead of the curve. So take your time, get feedback if needed, and remember: your resume is the first handshake with your future employer—make it count.
