Pulled - Joseph Woll

summary: on March 5th, 2025 at 10:57pm EST Joseph Woll gets pulled for performance related reasons for the first time in his NHL career.

I whipped this up this morning after seeing that depressing video of Woller on the bench after being pulled

So, a bonus post to the usual one that is coming on Saturday

The first goal was not really something out of the ordinary. An unlucky bounce that slipped past him. It had you squirm, but it was still early in the game so there was still time to fight back.

The second goal was one he probably should have had. But the defense was making bad plays, not supporting him. Or at least, that was what you were telling yourself.

The third one was the worst. Berube called for Stolarz the second the refs confirmed the goal and the Golden Knights obnoxious goal horn stopped blaring through the arena. Your boyfriends head hung low. Grabbing the water bottle from behind the net, splashing a quick spray on his face before skating over to the bench. Anthony giving him a supportive slap to the blocker as they passed each other.

He didn’t even bother opening the door, just climbing over the wall trying to escape as quickly as possible. Supportive claps from Matthew Knies, Simon Benoit and Craig Berube doing nothing when he made his way further down the tunnel.

You knew his emotions were all over the place. You knew he was blaming himself for this and not the lack of support from the team. The lack of defense and the lack of offence.

When he returned to the bench a few minutes later his Leafs cap was pulled deep over his eyes. You couldn’t see his expression from sitting high up in the box at T-Mobile Arena. You and a few other girls made the trip to Sin City to support your partners. Seeing them for more than a day during their weeks of endless road trips.

Steph Marner and Gab McCabe gave you comforting rubs on the back as you kept your eyes focused on your boyfriend, sitting slumped together on the stool they provided for him.

The game continued to go into the wrong direction. Ending 2-5 for the Golden Knights. Anthony putting in a stelar performance but the two goals from Mitch and Auston weren’t enough.

The mood was slumber around the room as everyone gathered their belongings to go and head back to the hotel. Access to the visiting locker room usually not being something a home team provided.

The team would stay in Vegas overnight and fly to Denver for their game against the Avalanche in two days tomorrow. You hoped you had time to see Joseph, especially after his night went but at the same time you wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to be alone.

You knew your boyfriend well enough to know that sometimes he needed to deal with something on his own before being able to speak about it with someone else.

As someone who never played a sport it was hard for you to grasp what exactly he was going through. You tried hard to be supportive and to be there for him when he needed you too but there were certain things, especially about his position on the team just another goaltender would understand.

You hoped he would talk with Anthony about it. Maybe chat to Matt Murray or Freddie Andersen, two of his biggest mentors during his time on the Leafs. Especially since it was the first time being pulled for performance related reasons.

Shortly after you entered your hotel room you got a link sent by one of your friends from home. The thumbnail showed your boyfriend sitting on the stool.

When you clicked on it your heart broke all over again. His eyes were glossy, rimmed red from what you could make out in the video. Tears started to prick at the corner of your own eyes. Seeing your usually vibrant boyfriend so upset and sad was not something you ever wanted to see.

You swiped the video away quickly, the video not something you wanted to look at for longer than you had to. Typing a quick response to your friend you jumped as another notification popped up your phone.

Matt Knies: Hey, just a heads up, he´s incredibly angry at himself. Left the arena a few minutes ago but I don’t know where he´s going, I tried to talk to him, but he didn’t want to listen. Can you let me know if he shows up at yours?

You let out a loud sigh. You knew Josephs mood would be terrible, that he would be angry about himself, telling himself he wasn’t good enough, he let his team down. All the things that weren’t true.

I I figured as much. Thanks for the heads up, I will let you know if he shows up.

After sending the message you silenced your phone and slowly got ready for bed. You wished he would’ve texted you, letting you know that he was okay, even though you knew that he wasn’t. But you knew him well enough that he wouldn’t until he cleared his own head.

So, you went to take a shower, did your skincare routine, put on pajamas and laid down on the hotel bed, your book in one hand, your phone in the other.

You checked for messages again before putting it on the charger but there was nothing besides a few messages from a group chat with the other girls confirming the plans for tomorrow.

The warm glow of the bedside table lamp reflected in the window as you starred outside. Downstairs the Vegas nightlife was buzzling. Putting up a strong contrast to the silence and somber atmosphere in your room.

You were worried. Trembling hands and a racing heart a solid confirmation.

Regardless, you got under the covers and tried to focus on your book, but the words were blurring together and none of the sentences on the page were making sense.

After reading the same sentence three times over and it still not making sense you closed the book and slammed it down on the nightstand with a little too much force.

Flopping back down on the bed, hitting the pillow with a loud thud you let out a loud sigh, checking your phone again.

Still nothing.

You knew he´d be alright. Or at least that´s what you kept telling yourself. Your thoughts spiraling all over the place at the same time.

Where was he? Was he okay? How was he feeling?

You were close to texting Matt again, asking if he showed up at the team hotel but before you could pick up the phone a knock on your rooms door had you shoot up.

The sight that waited for you on the other side made your heart break into a million pieces. It was even worse than watching the video.

Joseph looked like a shell of himself. His hair disheveled, looking like he had brushed through it many times. His eyes lifeless. The usual pretty blue without its glow.

He was still in his gameday suit, which meant he didn’t go back to his room after the game. Making you even more worried as to where he went between leaving the locker room and coming here.

You moved aside to let him into the room. His steps heavy on the carpeted floor. The dress shoes leaving slight marks as he walked.  

As soon as you closed the door you stepped into his embrace. His arms automatically wrapping around you as soon as you were close enough. Pulling you flush against his chest so you could feel how heavy his breaths were.

“I love you,” you whispered against his chest, his arms tightening as soon as the last word left your mouth.

When he let go of you a few minutes later you stepped further into the room where he shed his suit jacket and shoes before sitting down on your bed. Head hung low; shoulders sacked.

You didn’t know what to say, had no idea if anything could make it any better so you settled for telling him that Matthew was worried and that he should text him to let him know he was okay.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and thrusted it into your hand. “You know the code.” The only thing he said before flopping backwards on the bed with a heavy sigh.

Tapping the screen to unlock the device you looked at the picture of two of you had taken on your vacation last off-season. The memory spreading warmth through you, a small smile spreading across your face, regardless of the somber atmosphere.

After typing out a message to Matt you threw the phone back at him, it landed next to him in the sheets, staying there untouched.

“I´m always proud of you, no matter if you make fifty saves or zero.” His head lifted and he looked at you with a sour expression. “Nothing to be proud off from today.”

Your heart dropped. The pain and frustration in his voice ripping you apart. “I just don’t get what happened, ever since that game a few days ago something is going on in my mind and I can´t figure out what it is." He ran his hands over his face.

"Its keeping me from being my best self and what the team needs to win games. The outcome could’ve been different if I had those two goals. They would have had a chance to win.”

You sat down next to him and looked at him with a stern expression. “Joseph, look at me.” His eyes immediately locked with yours.

“Hockey is a team sport, this isn’t to blame on you alone, like Mitch said in media, they let you hang out to dry. And your mind is fine, it has been a couple of stressful weeks, so many games, back to backs with travel between countries. I think you´re exhausted. You need a few days to recover.” But you knew he didn’t have a few days to recover.

They had tomorrow off because of travel but after that he´d be right back into the grind. He opened his mouth to say something, but you stopped him with your finger. “No arguing.” So, he closed his mouth again and laid back down.

You slid up next to him and wrapped your arms around his torso, clinging to him, trying to give him a lifeline. For a bit he didn’t move but then he wrapped his arm around you too. “It´s just so frustrating,” he whispers into your hair.

“I know, honey.” You placed a soft kiss to his chest. “But there´s nothing you can do about it now. What´s done is done and next game will be better.”

You weren’t sure if your words had any effect on him, but you needed to get it out there. “I hope so, I want to show them I can be the guy they can bank on for a long time.”

“And you will. It´s still early in your career, you haven’t even made a hundred games. Every goalie had shit games every once in a while, you´re not the first and you certainly won´t be the last.”

A long stretch of silence followed.

“Thank you for being there for me. I know I´m not great company right now,” he whispered into the silence at one point.

You placed a kiss to his cheek. “Like I said, I love you regardless of you making a hundred saves or none, because I love you for being you and not for being Joseph Woll, goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs.”

He leaned down and finally connected your lips to a tender kiss. “I love you, sweetheart.”

For another few minutes neither of you said anything, him just pressing a subtle kiss to the crown of your head every now and then. When it stopped you looked up and saw that his eyes were closed, and his breaths grew heavier.

You were glad he settled down and while you didn’t know if he could stay the night, you snuggled closer to his chest, relaxing into the up and down of his deep breathing.

I Hey, he fell asleep, and I think he´s staying here tonight, not sure if he can but I don’t want to wake him. He´ll be back when he needs to be tomorrow, just letting you know in case anyone asks.

Matt Knies: Glad he´s with you, Bus is at 9 tomorrow, just make sure he´s back by like 8 so he can grab his stuff. Thanks for letting me know.

Putting your phone away again you sighed quietly, checking again if you boyfriend was still asleep. He looked peaceful, like the weight of the world didn’t came crashing down on him earlier in the night.

At that point you were glad you could help ease the pain because you knew he would do the same for you in a heartbeat.
