Matt has slept in Mello’s bed for weeks. He likes it there, always has, with the smell of chocolate and conditioner and Mello’s skin. The only difference now is he’s also missing soft white curls.

Near will be fine! He’s not on his own; Mello was. He isn’t drawn to danger like metal filings to a magnet; Mello is.

Matt wishes he could send something, anything… a cipher on a postcard might do the trick? Near will figure it out, no matter how complex.

Mello stirs and Matt pulls him close, drowns his doubts in marred skin and blonde hair.

Attention Death Note fan artists! I am Lau, and I am working on a fan comic / doujinshi with the focus on Matt, Mello and Near. The book, named Rewrite, has a tentative release date of summer 2023 May 16th, 2025! It's been an on again, off again project since 2010, and I decided to make it a reality this year. Near can’t sleep, can’t sleep; too much weighs on him. Leaving his room might help.

He knocks on the door – only Matt’s door now. Mello will never set foot in these rooms again.

There is no response. He knocks once more.

The sound of footsteps; the door cracks open, a bleary-eyed Matt appears.

‘Wha’re you doing here middle of the night?’

Near’s hand flees to his hair of its own accord, twists a strand. ‘I miss Mello.’ He doesn’t know what else to say; this is the only truth he can word.

Matt’s gaze softens. ‘Hey, me too. Come in?’

Matt: Wha- Near! What are you doing at my house, it's three in the morning-

Near: [urgently] Teach me how to use emojis.

25. Have you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs and graphics or similar?

oh boi SO many!!!! lawlight (i was like ‘wtf are these names bro’ and my frend somehow dumped me into the DN garbage bin), patrochilles (i mean, they from a book but ya), klance, terumob (kiiiiinda?? i mean i fully understood after i watched the show/read some of the manga lmao,) and many more i guess (a lot from anime, and also some more from series like tfc bc those characters are everyfuckingwhere i love it lol)

26. Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic you’re more drawn to?

ummmmmmmmmm yea uh. i used to think so? but i.... really don’t have a type lol,,,, i mean. there’s enemies to friends to lovers like zukka, rinharu - kinda! with the whole complicated friend/rivalry thing, drarry, terumob, you name it wow; there’s bffs to lovers like somagni, mattmello, jasico, pipabeth, ginluna, parvender, wolfstar, johndave, johnlock; there’s fcuking weird ones where their dynamic is just A+++ like lawlight, sebagrell, mattnear, ekurei, hermansy;there’s angsty ones,fluffy onesjust purely aesthetic ones or ones i love a lot only for the physical aspect, IDK MAN I THINK MY TYPE MIGHT BE THE FIRST THREE BUT TBH,,,

Yooo~ I noticed you ship MattoNia and want to ask if you have any fic recs with them you'd be willing to share? ;)

aliform is a brilliant writer with a really unique style, and their fic sleep and his half-brother death is one of my fave mattnear fics of all time. it explores the characters in a fairly grim light rounded off with a tenderness that is just so good man, though this fic does have some… questionable topics presented in it, that if you wanna message me abt before reading you can. also worth checking out by them are ghost and vampire, vampire , out of the ninth-month midnight , and (though this one isn’t mattnear it still is v well written and frickin hilarious) sleepaway

tierfal is i think one of the most largely known death note writers on both ff and ao3 and feverish is no bad example of the quality of their work. short and sweet, if you’re here for the tooth rotting. in it is even shorter, but just as adorable

jenwryn is probably the other big dn writer on these sites, and for good reason - if you’re into nsfw, jack of hearts is not too long and hot as hell (though it’s mnm, fair warning). in from the cold is another sweet one, another one of my faves, and honeychild (also nsfw) is….beautiful….but sad. idk how else to describe it you will cry if your heart isn’t made entirely of stone. maybe patch it up with devotion not diminished, which is mnm but hey it ain’t sad

sxldato…… how do i describe sxldato…… they’re rad as hell and all of their work is snappy, solid and just pure awesome. the only heaven i’ll be sent to (nsfw) is light and sweet, and even though it’s not a pairing they’re into you can see the effort they put into keeping their interactions interesting. the hand they have on dialogue and relationships is incredible asjdksdjk just read their stuff okay. they make me like mattmello more that means smthn right

scattering ashes swallowed a good portion of my life for a time and i would 10/10 recommend. well….. maybe 9.5/10 cuz it’s unfinished but the chapter it leaves off at could? be considered just a reeeaally open ending??? in a way? but yeah it’s plot is unlike anything i’ve read amongst dn fics before and the author did an intense amount of research like they knew their shit writing this and it shows. the characters are portrayed wonderfully and the story takes you places you really didn’t expect to go. no really. we’re talking saudi arabia and bungee jumping feat ghostly apparitions, mad stuff.

i’ll be surprised if everyone and their mother hasn’t read nicotine patches and picture books but i guess it’s worth putting here anyways. beautiful work. also worth checking out by the same author is fright , which isn’t mattnear but is near-centric and equally as well written. maybe don’t make like me and read it after watching psycho after dark, though

loyalty by raven ehtar - another talented writer - has gorgeous prose and wonderful atmosphere. i’m personally not a fan of the whole ‘mattnear with uncharacteristically jealous mello as a side dish’ but if that floats your boat, have fun sailing. the rest of this author’s dn works are also worth having a gander

and finally, some short and sweet fics to bring this to a close: wanna cyber? is hilarious crack if you just want smthn fun and not heavy at all, snowfall and cigarettes is fluffy and just smthn slightly different, and candles and lego is just pure wammy’s ladishness feat gay feels

Matt snuck over to his roommates bed and looked down at him. He felt the steadiness of his breath and watched the movement of his eyes. Once he was assured Mello was asleep Matt turned on their small desk lamp and pulled out his newest project. It was set up much like a music box. When you wind it up a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder plucked the tuned teeth of a steel comb to produce a sound. It played a small simple tune but Matt thought it was sufficient. However all of that was located inside the base of the machine. The real interest was the robot situated on top. The tiny figure sat at a proportionately tiny piano. The key under the base also wound the visible gears in the robot’s body which made it’s arms move stiffly across the “keys” of it’s piano. It was cute really. 

As he was completing the final, mostly aesthetic, details he thought about who it was meant for. Mello and Near had gotten into another fight that day. The blonde lost his tempter and decked the smaller boy in the face, leaving him in pretty bad shape. The memory actually made Matt’s blood boil. He’d completely refused to talk to Mello for the rest of the day and his friend went to bed mad at him, not that Matt cared that much at the moment. Mello would be over it by morning. 

Once he’d completed the last of the tiny little details. Matt peered over at Mello one more time. He wound it up just a bit and watched carefully as the mechanics began to work. When he was satisfied, Matt gave a soft smile and scooped his creation up in his hands. He turned out the light and moved gently towards the door in the dark, being very careful of where he stepped. He slipped out of his shared room and into the halls of Wammy’s. He knew Near was still in the infirmary, Mello had busted his lip pretty bad and they liked to play it safe with the 1st successor. 

He didn’t really know why whenever Near ended up hurt he felt compelled to bring him something. A small apology gift. After all Matt wasn’t the one who hit Near but he did sit by while it happened, which was just as bad.Nervously, Matt peeked into the infirmary and found Near immediately. He was still awake. A small bedside light was clicked on and he was currently occupied with a Rubik’s Cube. He was just about to duck back out but Near turned his head and their eyes met. “Matt...?” He was sure it was the first time he’d ever heard a note of confusion in Near’s voice. 

Realizing he was caught Matt tried to look casual as he entered the infirmary, gift in hand. “Hey...” He stopped awkwardly next to the small boy’s bed and tried not to look at him. “I, ah... This is...” Clearing his throat Matt just held out his gift for Near. There was a small pause until he felt soft hands brush over his and the weight was lifted out of his palms. Finally he looked down at Near and smiled at the look on his face. His tired eyes had gone wide as he gently turned the music player in his hand and a tiny smile tugged at his lips. 

After a moment of silence Near began to wind it up, he then placed it gently on the bedside table and watched as the robot “played” it’s tune. He looked almost mesmerized and Matt figured it was a good time to slip away. But a gentle voice stopped him. “Wait.” 

Matt stopped and turned his head slightly. Near had reached his hand out, the Rubik’s Cube settled in his palm. Slowly, Matt turned and reached out to accept the toy. “Thank you, Matt.” The redhead looked down at the cube for a second before finally giving a crooked grin. “No problem... Get some sleep now.” With that Matt put the gift in his hoodie pocket and left the infirmary, the small tune from Near’s bedside table spilling out into the hall after him.
