'Delicate Arch' Finds the Horror of Reality [Review]
Delicate Arch finds a unique middle ground between the horrors of loss of mind and the unexplained. The indie horror film, written and directed by Matt Warren, recently had its world premiere at Dances with Films and I've been lucky enough to screen the film. This psychological horror story stars William Leon, Kelley Mack, Kevin Bohleber, Rene Leech, and Katie Self (who voices the narrator). Poster artwork for Delicate Arch
Synopsis for Delicate Arch
https://vimeo.com/906101282?share=copy Grant, Wilda, Cody, and Ferg are all college students in Salt Lake City. Grant and Cody are supposed to be best friends, but Grantâa paranoid and spoiled film studentâsuspects that Cody is secretly hooking up with Wilda, an ex-girlfriend Grant struggles to remain amicable with. Their friend is Ferg, Wildaâs nonbinary stoner cousin and an amateur student of Theosophy and Ritual Majick. Fleeing an atmospheric disaster known as âThe Inversionâ in the Salt Lake Valley, the group decides to go camping in Southern Utahâs Arches National Park. As Grantâs obsessive voyeurism escalates on-site, he begins to sense a malevolent, yet imperceptible, force encroaching on them.
The Hits & Misses of a Film Like Delicate Arch
From the start of this film the tone reaches out and holds on in such a sinister way. Bleak and unsettling, the narrator develops a heavy weight of dread in the stomach of a viewer. Her voice echoes comfort mixed in with suspicion and I wish it was used more often in the film. Delicate Arch is reminiscent of mind-fuckery films such as The Truman Show and As Above So Below. Character traits and actions have an excellent way of examining the characters from the start and give a sense of their intentions. From how characters respond to situations to subtle choices made from the first couple scenes, each person displays specific archetypes that are represented in the meta moments in the film.
The visuals and editing in Delicate Arch are quite good and produce an impressive of the audience losing stability along with characters like Grant. The lighting and color balance shows off how much the tone shifts for Grant compared to the others in the film. The tone and story structure experience a shift back towards the sense of dread felt in the first scene. However, this tone doesn't continue to hold up very well in certain portions of the film. Parts felt as though they were navigating a difficult jump between two different paths forward for the film. It echoed the themes of a film like The Outwaters too much at certain points and therefore the originality faltered.
The actors did a decent job, and I was impressed by Leech and Leon's performances in particular. The scenes between Grant and Ferg were some of my favorites and seemed the strongest in the film overall. Some moments did drag on for too long, making the story feel lost at times. This didn't help portions of the film that showed not many of the characters possessing likeable or redeeming qualities that would push care for their survival.
While the visuals were very impressive, some portions resembled the texture and flow of A.I. produced videos and animation. I'm always a fan of digital manipulation with images and videos, but as an artist I'm hoping there wasn't a resort to using A.I. imagery in the film itself. This doubt provides me with a sense of loss for true appreciation I'd love to have for the effects and visuals in their entirety.
One fantastic portion of the film was the twist of an ending that swirled in a bittersweet taste of shock in a character's fate (I won't spoil it of course). There were some fantastic decisions made in this film in regard to its approach of the meta, the genre of horror, and the terror of the fourth wall breaking between this genre's audience and the story. It's worth a watch, but not necessarily something worth a repeated viewing in my opinion. However, I'm very excited for whatever comes out from these creators and cast in the future.

Matt Warren's Lyrical Catharsis in "It All Made Sense" Breaking through the surface of indie alt-folk genre, Matt Warren stirs a pot of raw emotions with his latest single, "It All Made Sense." Bared down to the basic instrumentation - sparse yet vibrant guitars, a kick drum beating like an anxious heart, the rhythmic whisper of a tambourine, and a voice seeped in genuine sentiment - this track goes beyond merely being music. It's an intimate journey woven into melody and rhythm. https://open.spotify.com/album/4taaeXXGZdYRDWud7oE1bM The first impression that seizes you when you lend an ear to "It All Made Sense," is its refreshing simplicity. The crisp acoustic instrumentation serves to underscore the intimate nature of Warrenâs narrative, providing understated yet poignant harmony that is both resonating and comforting. Complementing the alluring guitar strings are soft rhythmic strikes on the kick drum and tambourineâan organic heartbeat infusing life into otherwise woebegone sentiments. However, where the song truly shines is through Warren's seamless fusion of relatability and introspection within his lyricism. Emerging from this male vocalist is a balladeerâs tale about love lost and self-discoveryâfrom heartbreak to healingâthat anyone navigating similar waters will find solace in. [caption id="attachment_52022" align="alignnone" width="1500"] Matt Warren's Lyrical Catharsis in "It All Made Sense"[/caption] Warren delivers these lyrics in subtle and controlled strokes. His smooth vocal performance requires no excess embellishment to hit homeâit echoes every human's need for genuine connection and stings with every false promise received or given. His sorrowful baritone feels like a friend whispering words of commiseration on those cold nights when doubts creep in. "It All Made Sense" foreshadows towards what awaits listeners in his forthcoming album 'Excited to Die'. It illustrates how he explores solitude from different anglesâa place where it could indeed lead to catharsis or spiral down into a pit of despair. As such, this single has stirred anticipation as fans eagerly wait to hear the other adroit ways he promises to navigate these potentially treacherous sonic terrains. Matt Warren's "It All Made Sense" is a gem inside the landscape of indie music that will remain stuck in your head, not for its catchiness but for its raw depiction of reality. It's a comfort song for those in pain and illuminates the heart-wrenching beauty of human emotional experiences. Your vibe might be mellow when you send this track spinning; however, your mind won't stop disentangling his web of emotions long after the last chords have faded. DOTTIE PARIS
Matt  Warrenâs  new  album,  Music  Is  My  Life,  features  his  first  new music  in  many  years, but it was worth the wait.
The album Music Is My Life is a triumph, simulatneously bringing joy and memories of a wildly carefree time long ago.
If you didnât know he was one of the legends of Chicao house music, youâd probably be wondering why he isnât a âhouseâ-hold name.

For Matt Warren
There was a kid I always used to remember from my bus stop in elementary school through high school. His name was Matt Warren, and he died in an accident 3 years ago around this time.
Now, I never knew him personally. I don't even know if the two of us ever spoke to each other in the 8 years we spent at that bus stop together. But the thing about Matt was he had such a big personality that you couldn't help but get to know him.
He was a huge kid, always the tallest person in a class by at least a few inches. As for his personality, he seemed one of those types destined to always be the life of any party and any gathering. He loved to yell and act out at every single opportunity, and people couldn't help but join in with whatever he was doing. More than just a class clown, he was the clown of whatever school he was in. For 8 years on Halloween, he wore a giant dwarf mask that reached down passed his waist, stood on the side of the road at our bus stop, and waved at people driving by. If I remember him by nothing more than that, I can still say I liked him.
Some people just have the kind of ambition that makes you think "they'll always be successful", and that's all well & good. But others have the kind of personality that makes you think "they'll always be happy", and those are the people you want to hang around. Some people you can just count on to always smile and be themselves, down to every last crazy impulse and stunt. They make life feel like a party, and even the people who aren't invited feel involved and welcome. More than anyone else I've ever met, Matt Warren embodied that way of life.
